Youki will be the stage four boss for Youmu and Marisa. Something about making sure that Youmu is strong enough not to lose her life if she proceeds.
Someone new or unseen will be a boss for Reimu and Sanae, who wants to test the power of shrine maidens because she/he believes that they directly control the power of gods.

I just had a random thought earlier today that the extra stage is going to have a gimmick. Not sure what it is but my original thought was it was something that changed the boss. It would be cool if the boss was a playable character you weren't playing as, like dependent on the character, or like GFW, select a route for the boss or something. Probably won't happen, but it still sounds fun.
I figured out how to play midi in games with a different device on Win7 ^^

How much time do you guys think it will take for HM to be translated? Besides everyone's story modes and the whole menus, there's also the fact that the way HM's programmed is different from all other games. I bet it'll take two months.

I would be kinda annoyed if we had to 1cc to unlock Youmu. Not that I would rage at it or anything, but I'd like to be able to enjoy all the play styles and stories available at the get go, unless Youmu turns into a super character that combines the best of all the shot types of the other characters, in which case, I wouldn't mind as much.

Personally i don't think there are any comebacks maybe 1 perhaps (as a mid boss ), but new char's completely, evident in all typical touhou (exception of th9 and fighting series) so most likely it would be this way.

As long as it doesn't involve me having to pick up things physically (and definitely not if said things have only a short time window for me to pick them up before they change to something that's VERY detrimental), go ahead. I'm fine with Cherry system; I'm fine with time orb system; I'm fine with faith system; I'm fine with communication gauge, but if I have to be somewhere specifically in five seconds in a danmaku game, no thank you..

SA stage 1's large DNA-shooting fairies? :p (also, not exactly 5 seconds, but grazing implies memorization and hitbox knowledge -- also, if you want to hug bosses for grazing, you'll need boss hitbox knowledge too, when they have one, not to mention certain graze safespots which require pixel-perfect or near-perfect positioning, for example, Apollo 13, one of Kaguya's Last Spells, etc..)

I've got to try to let some enemies on the screen in order to make the faith counter not drop so quickly (since my memorization is terrible -- since I was a child, I preferred to understand things and had much more fun doing so than memorizing the same schoolwork), but I prefer PoFV's chaining, where I can feel the timer, can work with the timing of activated spirits (and it was also fun to activate them in places where I could chain more bullets, and in time for the fairy formations to be chained near them too), and can have more control over when I want the timer to keep going (it keeps going up while the fairy formation and spirits are being chained), or when I want it to be reset (for survival and boss summons/countering based on chain score)

for me, my problem with UFO is that there's an optimal UFO route, but I don't know it, and also probably would have a hard time keeping it in mind or internalizing it. Getting the UFO items, though, isn't nearly as difficult as chaining coins in Gunbird 2, or....... *RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEG* ..... getting gold bars at max value in Strikers 1945 II or...... *more RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEG* ...... chaining in Mars Matrix (which looks like MoF, except the faith counter isn't an exponential chain, getting faith items can bring your faith meter to full, instead of a cap of some 1/8 at minimum, which makes you literally have to make a item cube path, which can be disrupted by enemies not appearing if you didn't speedkill the previous enemies, and finally, the bullet reflecting system can screw your chaining in at least two ways: accidental bombing if you hold the shot button for too long, or mistiming on the really strict chaining -- you can release bullets and make them become cube items, but it's very possible that you lose your chain in the process -- or misaiming on these bullets) ... or.. *RAAA..ge :D* .... powerups in the Raiden series, whenever you die. What you may need, is to get a timing on the UFO items you want to collect; wait for them to change, and keep the timing on your mind in order to decide if it's safe to collect them, or if you should wait (if you have an UFO at the screen, you can also collect the other UFO items on the screen while the UFO is active in order to improve point item value)

Actually I find the Cherry system's type of memorization much more free than MoF or SA, which pretty much take away from you dodging things proactively. Grazing during borders makes for some pretty awesome play, even if you have to grazewhore certain patterns and know certain times to activate a border and unfocus a shitton and so on.

While I did like the feel of mixing Power & Bombs, it made it painful to cut down your attack power in place of saving your butt... :ohdear:

Yeah, my preference for a system for getting 1-ups throughout the game is best defined as "not-UFO-esque." Anything else works. Even SA's, punishing "if you die you lose part of a life" system. Scoring, borders, whatever else - it doesn't really change anything for me. I'll play whatever game you throw at me and enjoy it.

UFO's system was fun at the start but got old way, way too fast for me. I 1cc'd it with Marisa B and her terrible shot power recently, and not only did that shot type have to die in a fire, but it made retrieving every last UFO a necessity. What a pain in the butt from start to finish.

The best part of this "optimal UFO route" thing is that you'll probably never be able to pull it off. UFO is not about finding the most optimal UFO route, memorizing it and then grinding it until you get it. You approach a UFO 1cc like you would any other shmup, collect things as they appear, go for lives when you can, but if you miss one no biggy -- you'll be able to recover it later. Just remember that collecting reds is good. Memorizing and executing an "optimal" route only invites frustration as you attempt to perfect it every time. I strongly advise a more relaxed approach to the UFO system, just collect reds and greens when you can. If you "mess up" and spawn a rainbow, that's fine, it'll cancel bullets, convert points to power and provide an extra ufo token to help you towards the next UFO you want to spawn. If you somehow spawn a blue (which, if you're going for survival, can only mean you screwed up at least twice in a row), then that's fine too, you'll have a less embarassing score when you finish the game :V

Scoring is about sacrificing more reds in exchange for rainbows or blues at a rate that you can handle. If you went and memorized the WR scoring route (there is more than one, by the way) you'd quickly get pissed off and quit, since へかて sacrifices 9 spare lives just by not collecting any reds, and he also suicides off the rest of them for graze, leaving him with no resources and absolutely no room for screw ups anywhere. Good luck with those routes.

This only applies for scoring since using UFOs to cancel bullets is almost always more trouble than it's worth. Scoring always involves memorization in any shmup (though for some it's more necessary than others), so I don't really know what the point of this is.





Here's hoping for something similar to the UFO system in TD, where you can slowly trade off lives for score as you get better at the game. I'm not too concerned with how ZUN achieves this effect (hopefully not by suiciding), just as long as it's present and allows room for active improvisation.

This main point right here does not get emphasized enough. Too many times I see people raging about UFO because they have divined some purpose from the game that simply isn't there, and then get angry when they can't complete this purpose. It's like saying, "If Rebecca Black is supposed to be a fish, how come she doesn't have any gills?"
