>"They wouldn't need to be conscious. Those gaps out up to reality, right? They'd just need to be sucked in."

>"But they couldn't exist here," Mugetsu continues. "There's no part of them which would even make sense to be here. Even counting everything else here."
>"Well," Marisa says, "me and Reimu got sucked through one of those things and we never ended up in here, either. And we do have consciousness last time I checked."

>"Dreams may be able to manifest a physical form, but without consciousness, no physical form should be able to manifest in dream." Mugetsu sighs. "I don't know what else I can say."
>Marisa raises an eyebrow. "You're really saying you think the shrine's inside here, somewhere?"
>"I've sense nothing like it," Mugetsu says, "and we've all but turned the dreamscape inside out to do what we just did."

>Marisa shrugs. "Beats me."
>"I'm not sure, either," Mugetsu says. "Maybe it's somewhere in the space in between Gensokyo and outside?"
>"Can always build a new shrine if someone really wants to," Marisa says.

>"If I could just figure out where one of these gaps leads...I might be able to answer the question. That they lead to different points in time, and that the Gengetsu thing came from here at that crater suggests heavily that whatever pulled those parts of Gensokyo from their proper places was pulling them toward here. So I don't think they'd be lost between Gensokyo and the outside, but rather Gensoyo and here. I wonder if you where and Reimu appeared had any relation to it, Marisa... Did you both end up there together?"

>Marisa nods. "Yeah, pretty close. 'course, I was over at the shrine when this happened in the first place. And it just dumped us on a hill near the outskirts. Never found anything special about the place."

>"I suppose it might not be that direct, then. Now that I think about it, Patchouli did mention stuff about ley lines and such being involved. Still, even without that bit of evidence, this is still the most likely thing that has happened. And, thinking on it, Mugetsu, you're saying that things with no consciousness cannot enter dreams, right? What about you? Or more precisely, the things you're wearing? It mind makes sense for Marisa and I, we just fell asleep. But not you."

>Marisa frowns. "She knows a lot of stuff, I'll give her that. I think this is a bit out of her area, though."
>You try to count the gaps which lead outside, but quickly discover this is easier said than done as many of the smaller ones and even some of the larger ones blend into each other. You take another look at Patchouli's map, which is basically as you remember it. There are certainly not obviously fewer gaps to the outside than there are indications on the map, but beyond that it's hard to tell for certain.

>Can we determine how old some of them are? In particular, one that would have formed only recently?

>You can get a vague sense of relative age. No single gap strikes you as clearly the very most recent, however. There are at least a handful that might qualify.

>Have a closer look at the most likely candidates for the very recent one.

>You try to more carefully inspect the gaps that seem the most recent. There are at least 7 whose point in time is close enough to be indistinguishable to the vague sense you get from them. There may even be more. You can't tell anything more specific about where in space they exit.

>Does this mean we can ascertain that they also open to a similar location?
>...Look around for a loose yen coin.

>It's more that your sense of what is spatially on the other side of any gap is vague to the point of uselessness. They may lead to similar areas, or very different ones. You feel sure that they lead to Gensokyo, based on the impression of familiar history you feel. Beyond this, you really have no way to tell.
>You just so happen to have such a thing in your wallet.
