Anything PC-98, obviously. SoEW is easy but annoying (any first attempt on any difficulty will DESTROY you, then you know when the cheap crap comes and bomb one second earlier), LLS could be hard-ish but lolresources so just bomb away, MS should be easy but it's very stingy about resources for a Touhou shooter and there's Yumeko who will kill you and all that you hold dear. So yeah, LLS is a good place to start. And hey, you get to fight Yuka twice.

If you are a HERETIC who won't play PC-98, IN is the easiest because of spell practice and tons of bombs, EoSD has the easiest danmaku but relatively few resources + Remilia, PCB can be borderbreaked and SakuyaBombed through, and MoF is easy as long as you remember to BOMB ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING - you can bomb every card AND non-card and still beat it with something to spare. Failure to do so will lead to smashed keyboards and broken relationships, though. I'd say IN or PCB for an easier but satisfying first Windows lunatic.

Not EoSD. That goes down rather fast. UFO is the mean one.

Well, what i meant to say is: In EoSD i got to Scarlet Meister on first 1cc attempt. In UFO i haven't made it past stage 4 yet. Still, i saw this replay by Baity where he got to Murasa with 7 or 8 lives left. If i could just learn how to do that.

Blasted Stage 3... if that weren't there i might even like the game.

I have returned from my training in the mountains.

Okay, so it was really a forced weekend trip to Vermont, and a place with no cell phone service, let alone Internet. Whatever. Have a Phantasm clear. What I like about this run was I captured both "Mesh of Light and Darkness" and "Double Black Death Butterfly". My performance in the last three cards wasn't entirely serious though, since I had so many resources going into them.

To be honest, I have more trouble with MoLaD than DBDB. But good going.

Now capture all the cards in the same run.

But both games rely on both of them.

Memorization on stages, with little luckshit for EoSD but still a lot for UFO. Massive luckshit on bosses.

And the hitboxes in both games completely suck.

Okay...they don't "suck", it's just that EoSD puts you against larger hitboxes than you are used to which causes rage inducing deaths.

EoSD does have some memorization(well, even Cave shmups do), but the stupid amount of luck required...eh

the entire final boss fight is one huge dice roll. Same for Sakuya.

IIRC, I 1cc'd the first time I got to Scarlet Gensokyo, though I had a few Scarlet Meister game overs.

Sakuya isn't that much luck required outside Killing Doll and Eternal Meek, which I still call WTF was Zun thinking when he thought this was a good idea? Eternal Meek is still a lot of skill but it can easily give you something impossible as well.

And Remilia is pretty much luck. Do you clip something? Yound Gemon Lord, Vampire Illusion, Scarlet Gensokyo walling. Minor chance of walling elsewhere. Random boss movement. And lots of other stuff that can ruin a perfectly good run.

??? What do you mean?  I've been playing mostly PCB lately. This sounds like something I'd like to try. But are there really enough bombs to get you through the whole game on Lunatic? Sakuya doesn't seem very powerful (I usually play ReimuB). Which version of Sakuya is recommended for this?

Either.

SakuyaB is better for scoring though, and the bombs last longer. But SakuyA can trivialize some things too. I should try it with SakuyA sometime and see how things compare.

SakuyaA is horrible. Horrible. HORRIBLE. I remember when I was trying to first clear Extra: two dozen attempts with SakuyaA, never got anywhere, got annoyed, went back to normal mode and cleared it with SakuyaB in one attempt (I wasn't a consistent normal player at the time), then cleared extra in one attempt, then cleared Phantasm in my first attempt ever despite screwing up pretty much everything because really, what else could I do but flail around like an idiot whenever something was reasonably different from extra.

Yes, SakuyaB is THAT much better. SakuyaA is the worst shot in the game by a wide margin, maybe it's good for getting to stage three or four on normal but that's it.

SakuyaA has the sole advantage of being able to deal damage from pretty much anywhere on screen.

Other than that, she has the worst unfocused damage, cherry gain... Her focused shot doesn't keep up with moving enemies... Lots of bad stuff.

There are a few worse shots than SakuyA.

Well, there's the obvious ReimuA.
And Marisa who just sucks at stages.

ReimuA I can agree with.

Marisa? What are you talking about?

EDIT: Derp, misread that. But I've already managed to use Marisa well on stages because of NOT QUITE AYA SPEED YEAH.

Pitiful damage. You're much better off not hitting 100% of the time with any other shot. And if you are getting pushed away from the bosses all the time, you should be playing at a lower difficulty and learning to, well, stay below bosses, along with probably a ton of other things.

Well, there's the obvious ReimuA.

Much more comfortable focused speed, and small hitbox. Probably still better than SakuyaA for the players who need homing shots, I'd say.

And Marisa who just sucks at stages.

No, unless "can't clear a stage without needing to learn a single thing about it" is the new "sucks". I mean, that's more or less on par with saying A-L is an inferior choice for DDP because it "sucks at stages"!

« Reply #113 on: July 26, 2010, 02:49:13 AM »
It's not a case of saying that just because you have to learn stages means that they suck.

If it was, I'd be saying that anything other than Netherworld Team sucks in IN, anything other than MarisaB sucks in SA, and anything other than SanaeB sucks in UFO, but I don't.

Edit: and that's just the shottypes not considering bombing. With bombing, it goes up for some shottypes.

I just use C in DDP because I just want the 1-all. I do need to try out A and B though.

New personal best for PCB Stage 4 Lunatic. Perfected everything up to the second-to-last attack in the stage portion, my first time getting past the post-Lily White stuff without dying or breaking a border.

Also, finally recaptured Kogasa's last card on Lunatic. One shift in my strategy really made all the difference.

I have decided to go on Touhou break. I will not play Touhou in any capacity for at least a week, if not more (until Fairy Wars of course). My skills have atrophied terribly and need to recharge (because that's how it works).

For one last hurrah though, I decided to play LLS lunatic, but with Marisa. This was the first time using her in like a year, and I noticed I had never actually beaten it with Marisa B, making my boast of 1ccing with all shot types moot...

Well I solved that! It was a rather embarrassing run though, ending 0/2 with 10 deaths and 19 bombs. >.> The only things worth noting was that I was two dodges away from capturing Yuka's final phase and I did a badass dodge through Reimu's storm she fires during her streaming attacks to get into the safe zone.
nintendonut888: Hey Baity. I beat the high score for Sanae B hard on the score.dat you sent me. X3
Baity: For a moment, I thought you broke 1.1billion. Upon looking at my score.dat, I can assume that you destroyed the score that is my failed (first!) 1cc attempt on my first day of playing. Congratulations.

The point is that in EoSD i can go in, completely blind, and collect all my resources long time before game over because all you need is a pretty low amount of score that can easily be gotten through picking up items. In UFO, i have seen proof that the only reason i haven't 1cc'ed yet is that i don't have a UFO route planned out.

Surely EoSD's rank system can have some pretty dreadful impacts on your play and sure Remilia can be quite a whore at times but UFO rapes those who haven't gotten everything down and planned out. There doesn't seem to be much room for improvisation if you want optimal resources. In EoSD, Stages 1-3 are basically not a threat but UFO is a threat from Stage 2 onwards.

This post made me open up EoSD Extra just to remember how to do Cranberry Trap (which is totally easy lol). Thankfully I did, because I ended up near-perfecting the entire stage.

One bomb near the end of the stage that could have been avoided had I remembered to move to the left instead of right, and one completely derpderpattention death on Four of a Kind. Also noted is the first time I've done Maze of Love the proper way in forever.

SA Stage 5 Hard perfect run!

Oh my God, finally! At last, no deaths, bombs, gapping, or "pacifying" anything. And it wasn't even those two enclosed-streaming sections that were giving me trouble this whole time. "Small Demon's Revival" finally behaved and didn't utterly blindside me with anything.

I don't think anyone could understand just how important this one is for me, and I wonder how few will care considering how good some people are now. This took me half a year to get. I'll say it again, this took me HALF A YEAR to get. I can't tell you how relieved I feel.
