Just don't use a bomb to finish off the boss since doing that gives you 1/10th of the boss' point value.
That's the problem, the final phases are usually such a shitfuck that you are better off bombing

what's your usual score anyways?

Because we started talking about arcade shmups in the spellcard help topic:

Ketsui. I don't know what it is about those Cave shmups but they always seem so bland too me. Always just a big blur of purple that you somehow gotta dodge.

I couldn't even sit through gameplay footage of the first two stages without getting bored. But... i will give it a try sometime. If i don't come back with my thoughts on it, you'll know that i haven't tried it.

Well, it has already been mentioned, but I just wanted to say. That from what I've seen of Windows Touhou games (it's not a big mystery that I hate them very much compared to PC-98 because the older games are more ARC like than the Windows games) the patterns are very nice and pleasing to look at but when you actually try and play and dodge and stuff it's a snooze-fest, personally. For instance I only started really getting on my toes in Mountain of Faith (one of the only Windows games I actually bothered playing for more than a week) at around Sanae and Stage 6 and Ayayaya was like ehhhhh. I couldn't really motivate myself to practice besting the pattern when it's too boring to do so.

It's not like PC-98 bullets are a lot faster and then limitations of the hardware cause this sort of flicker that can catch you offguard and ruin your shit and that crap's so much more fun :V I don't know, it seems so much more like an Arcade shmup to me and I play those much more often than I play Touhou, so.

Now I noticed some DIMAHOOOOOOOO discussion. Anyway when I used to play that game to death I used Karte because I dunno I wanted to. Karte is actually not that great compare to other ones like the sekkrit characters and I did also try using SOLO-BANG who is actually kind of fun~ Also, eons ago, there was a Dimahoo cabinet in the glorious land of my birth HK and managed to get into a 2P game and I kept stealing my partner's bombs  :derp:

Lucky run where I entered stage 4 with 3 completed sets, left stage 4 with 9 completed sets.
Oh, and I kept the inventory window open for all the stages so that helped a lot.

Also, you have no idea how beneficial a completed shield set can be.

Yeah, that's Mushihimesama/Mushihimesama Futari.

I'd really suggest playing those before passing judgment on them, honestly. They aren't my favorites for no reason, after all-- and when you're playing, it's almost hypnotic, really. On the other hand, if you're focusing on playing for score, the stages don't seem that long at all.

I think its pretty pointless for me to try such games out. If i'm bored just watching it once then playing it won't be any better. Its not my intent to say that shmups sucks because of pink. Jus' saying that I personally get bored with it and need something different for each stage.

Bananamatic, why don't you try using the inventory menu? That way, you can figure out what you're missing.

I'd definitely disagree with this; as I said in my previous post, they're designed to be played rather than watched. :V I'd recommend trying them if you ever get the chance.

Also, a few days without playing Ketsui has brought me back down to a skill level that while not terrible isn't going to get me into Tsuujou. Stage 5 is ruining my shit again. :colonveeplusalpha: Thought of a few nice tactics for the last section though, so it's not all bad.

Ketsui Stage 5 3DNB - 2 silly mistakes on the boss and only one error on the stage portion. No mistakes up to the second round of round grounded enemies in the underground section. I may have to try and perfect this stage now. :colonveeplusalpha:

Also, Deathsmiles is on its way. \o/

EDIT: 2DNB, both on the stage. Raaaaaagh. >:V

To Sapz or anyone else that might still be on the search for a really good d-pad controller:
Apparently, Mad Catz made a "portable drum set" for Rock Band that comes with a NES-style controller. Many people on some of the bigger forums (neogaf) are saying the d-pad on it is fucking amazing.

I'm probably going to order it for myself and judge for myself, but I have pretty much high hopes for it. Of course, it's going to come with all the drum buttons and all that crap, but the selling point is that one d-pad controller that comes with it. Here's a link for anyone that wants to take a look at it. Here is a close shot of the controller only.

Oh yeah. Only problem: no triggers.

This looks extremely tempting, although the lack of triggers is a little bit of a turnoff as I use autofire quite a lot, and aside from that I've been getting pretty handy with the 360 d-pad. Having said that, it's cheap enough on amazon.co.uk (less than a tenner holy shit) that I might as well just order it anyway and see how well it works out. :V I'll probably end up getting this, then. Thanks for the tip.

I keep dying with bombs in stock. Died with a bomb in stock during the first six stages. Then I died with 2 bombs in stock twice on the Extra stage. Then I derped the final stage and didn't even make it to Jitterbug.

And every single death in that run was to easy crap also except for the Ex boss death as that fight is bullshit.

How much time do you guys think it will take for HM to be translated? Besides everyone's story modes and the whole menus, there's also the fact that the way HM's programmed is different from all other games. I bet it'll take two months.

just broke my current best score in Dimahoo by a small amount.. got 3x before the first boss, got both the fairy and the jewel, then got demotivated after dying once on stage 2 (I felt that I would need that life/bomb later) and stopped playing (though I still have the input file and will treasure it for some Ha ha, old chap! moments). Further demotivation caused by me having heard of the rank increase gained by completing sets, but never actually experiencing how noticeable it is, until now.

At least, I've figured out how getting the fairy from the first boss is done; once you know what attacks the boss uses when it first appears, and from where, you can safely time your charge level (and element) and approach. Also, for those who wish to know the charge order for the first stage.. it seems to be like.. lvl 1 (right after picking the first magic powerup) - lvl 4 (make sure to kill the goblins as soon as they leave the forest) - lvl 3 (focus on the tank) - lvl 3 (try to attack the arms of the metallic armor) - lvl 3 (on the same type of metallic armor) - lvl 5 (against the blue dragon, as it's leaving the screen)

edit: here's the input file (made in lagless mame99p), for those who may be curious

Death mode is pretty hard. I wouldn't even want to trigger Death Mode 2 outside of 1.1 considering how much trouble Death Mode 1's giving me. I'm fine with doing the Extra stage on 1.1 though as the familiar control makes it a lot more doable, I just wish I would stop screwing easy stuff up throughout the runs.

YES. Dimahoo is much more fun than any cave shmup i've ever played.

Also, I don't know if this is old news, but Guwange is being released worldwide and being localized. Fuck yeah. \o/

Even if it IS Cave, i'm happy to see actual shmups finally coming out in the west. The only thing else that 360 has is Triggerheart and Ikaruga. But... can anyone recommend a controller that doesn't suck or Xbox 360. Sure its a good controller for next gen games but there's bound to be a better alternative for shmups because this thing doesn't fucking work.
