English names for the girls
« on: June 19, 2010, 08:52:32 AM »
Let us pretend that the Touhou series has been officially introduced to Western gamers, but some of the names have been changed to sound more "American".  What do you think will some of the girls be called?

Names such as Marisa, Remilia, Letty, Medicine, etc. will most likely be left untouched because they already sound like English names, but ones like Reimu, Sanae, Yukari, Yuka, etc. will mostly likely be changed since they sound too "Japanese".

So maybe they will become something like...

Reimu = Rena
Sanae = Sally

Okay, I can't think of much at the moment...  Try to come up with more  by yourselves!

Enjoy!

Reminds me of the "What if 4kids made a touhou anime?" thread. Goood times.

Someone would like to have a word with you.

But it's America.

It's probably 4kids.

THEY THINK THAT ARBOK EVOLVES INTO SEVIPER.

Apparently, they think pokemon works like Digimon.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they called Nitori "Elly" or "Rika".

You all should read this thread. Don't post in it, for gods sake, but read it.

It is going to be worth it.  >:D

Names for the girls

Iryan beat me to it. Also, why just English names? How about names from other cultures, giving them to a girl based not necessarily on sounding similar to the Japanese but of meaning similar qualities? You could, for example, say that Name X means these things in said culture, which would suit Touhou Girl X.

"Human history and growth are both linked closely to strife. Without conflict, humanity would have no impetus for growth. When humans are satisfied with their present condition, they may as well give up on life."

Yes, Shou could be Tigrisa, since Tigra is copyrighted.

And Ichirin is Wanda and her familiar Klowd.

IT MAKES SENSE NAO.

First the easy ones:

Yukari = Violet

Ran = Indigo

Chen = Orange (It was a name in Gunstar Heroes, so maybe it could work :V)

Kanako = Viper

Suwako = Slippy *shot several times*

Shinki = Persephone (or Helda)

Daiyousei = Fey

Komachi = Gwen Ree Par (Hurrrrr pun)

Shikieiki = Siriso (Spell it backwards)

Yuuka = Flora

Kaguya = Luna

Tewi = Hunny

Utsuho = Chere Nobil (Hurrrrr pun)

Yamame = Arachne

Byakuren = Teresa

Rinnosuke: Roland/Rasche
Eirin: Could stay the same, or Rina. *gets an arrow through the head
Mokou: Althea (The references should be obvious nao) or Ignissia(Ignis = Fire.) *is burnt crispy
Cirno: Glacias (Ice) or Fatima... wait, Fatima is to awesome for Cirno *is frozen in black ice
Reisen: Bun Eyra Bit (Buney Rabit, Bunny Rabbit)
Sanae: Lucky
Yuyuko: Pop/Popourri *is smashed by a loli with amassive appetite
Nitori: Aqua
Kanako: Sadie *is blown away, into a snake pit
Sakuya: Samantha... maybe? Idk. It would need to sound sophisticated, and fitting for a maid.
Chen: Josie *is brutally murdered by cats and familars
Ran: Kite Sune (Kitesune, Kitsune)
Yukari: BayoVionletta

But honestly, a lot of the names could stay how they are. Look at FF6, Terra/Tina anyone?

Reisen: Bun Eyra Bit (Buney Rabit, Bunny Rabbit)
Ran: Kite Sune (Kitesune, Kitsune)

Tina sounds foreign/unusual to Japanese people, but not to Americans. That's why they changed it.

If you're gonna spell it backwards, why not just spell Enma backwards?
I think Amne sounds a bit more feminine.

I basicly meant that the names don't have to sound normal/realistic/whatever in the language the game is in. Reimu could stay Reimu, Yukari could stay Yukari.

Hell, I if this topic seriously happened, if Touhou was introduced to NA as an anime or game, I think the names should stay how they are.

Digimon lets your monsters evolve into completely unrelated other monsters.

4Kids said that Arbok evolves into Seviper.

Oh...  I know about the Arbok evolving into Seviper one already.

Thanks!

Also, it seems likely that Gensokyo would have its name changed as well.  I can easily see it being changed into Eastern Wonderland or something like that.
