JT: Be warned - Grave of the Fireflies is really, really depressing. Like an orphan's puppy dying of cancer level of depressing. And the animation is a tad underpar, compared to the studio's other films. Spirited Away, though, is probably Ghibli's masterpiece. I'd also recommend Howl's Moving Castle.
I watched Grave of the Fireflies the other night, actually. I'll admit I may have gotten a bit misty-eyed. Just a little. (Actually, I cried like a little girl.)

My friends and I - who usually have lots of snarky comments even for movies we like - were pretty quiet the whole time, and at the end there was just this eerie silence in the room. It was really unnerving.

Then finally somebody was like, "...Next time, let's watch The Tumbly Puppies Save Easter."

Just finished Gurren Lagann.
Feelings?

Has anyone seen the first episode of Seitokai Yakuindomo yet? I liked the first half since it seemed like a comedy anime with no plot, but the second half had a bit too many sexual scenes/jokes to safely watch on the living room desktop... If they just lay off those then it will be a good anime.

Just finished Haibane Renmei.

How delightfully bittersweet. The last episode was fantastic, though.

Haibane Renmei is an incredible series, and often completely overlooked. Which is a real shame. It has powerful literary merit; so much so that if you like a good story, you'll likely watch the entire season in one go. I really wish more people would give this a shot, and I applaud you for seeing it through.

It's been a while since I've watched a whole season of something in a matter of a couple days. That alone should be indication of how I enjoyed it. I also read through the doujinshi/manga/whatever, as well. :P

Any of it involve Reki? If so, hook a brother up.

Feelings?

Those are the only words that could come to me freely, because I was too hopped up on euphoria and spiral energy when I finished the series to say anything else coherent about it. Ask Matsy. :V

Still feeling pretty good right now though.

Good to know I'm not the only Gurren Lagann fanatic around here. :3 Have either of you guys seen the movies yet? I feel like the first one was kind of a clusterfuck since it couldn't really fit all 15 episodes' worth of plot into a palatable timeframe, but the second one was fucking awesome.

Also, Parallel Works. Your opinions?

Nope, I'm pretty big fan of it myself. I had a Nia avatar a while back, too. (And I have a couple others made for later!) :3

Oh man, I thought the movies were great, if not only for their differences from the original series. I can't say much because I know Nobu hasn't seen them yet and I don't want to spoil anything, but yeah, I thought they were fantastic. Really should pick them up for my DVD collection sometime...

I've only seen the first set of Parallel Works so far. They're pretty cool.

Very cool. The new Parallel Works are kind of a mixed bag, but this one is really nice.

Nothing can hold a candle to the Genome one from the first set though. Jesus Christ, I almost had a heart attack from getting so pumped up. I think it's the only one that really captures the spirit of the series.

Damn I'm Bored. So I think I'll quote an old friend on Angel Beats. (Not my opinion)

All in all AB is like watching videos online of a retarded kid in a wheelchair drive off a pier. It?s incredibly stupid and sort of makes you feel bad about it, but deep down inside you can?t help being amused. Also, before you go praising its OP, let me just break it for ya: The OP song fucking sucks. The melody is nice but Lia is pretty much singing out of her ass.

I liked AB. It wasn't nothing but gags like everyone else says, it actually had a plot. And unlike some, I thought it wasn't rushed at all, and the ending was fine. It was a good little 13 episode show.

PS: Both the OP and the ED were fine. The ED in particular was great.

It really depends on your initial opinion when going in. If you went in from the start with a "Oh hey a Key anime and the first episode had some pretty good animation I hope this turns out well", then you'd quickly be turned off by the random jokes which suddenly turn serious during the last 10 mins of the episode (especially the LOL SHADOW HIJACK oh wait they didn't do much :3), the wildly flailing plot direction, and other things.

On the other hand if you read stuff like my trainwreck comment beforehand, you'd probably feel that it had enough jokes and touching moments to make a decent enjoyable anime.

Well, the Genome one is the only one that isn't actually 'parallel', isn't it?

I'm going to pace myself with the parallel works and movies to drag out the high as long as possible :V I saw a few though. Fuck yeah Viral.

Good point. I suppose that would explain why they actually included it in one of the movies. :V

In other news, I watched the first episode of Highschool of the Dead and it didn't disappoint. Zombies + tits = oddly satisfying, like a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. I remember when I first read the manga, I was like, "Holy shit! That dude's going to fight zombies with karate!" then shortly afterward
Spoiler:
when the guy dies, "Holy shit! That idea had a strangely logical outcome!"

Hey everyone, I have a question for you.

Do you think I will like Clannad? I ask because I'm interested in watching it, especially now that you can get the first season in a boxset. Everywhere I go says it's either a breathless masterpiece, or it starts off slow, but then gets better, or everything about it is wonderful, except for the very last episode of the second season. What do you think? (No spoilers either; I may really watch it in the future.) For comparison's sake, I have seen Kanon 2006, and I really liked it, enough so to even write a review for it on Myanimelist. If you must know my taste in anime and manga before gauging whether or not I'd like Clannad, go here and here.

Speaking of anime, I just saw episode 21 of Soul Eater in English on Funimation's website. Soul Eater = Teh Awesum.

We have similar tastes. Let's be friends. :3

Anyway, Clannad....eeeehhh. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. It was good. I didn't think it was as wonderful as people were telling me it was, though. It's worth watching, though.

That said, I haven't seen After Story yet, which I'm told is even better.

Really, I liked Air a lot more than Clannad. >_>;

Really? It was the opposite for me. Clannad really pulled me into the story, as opposed to Air, where the story was deep, but it didn't really pull me in.

If you liked Kanon then you will probably like Clannad.

After Story is far superior to the first series. And the OVA's are superior to After Story.

The anime AIR didn't affect me much. The game... that's the one you want. Just beware of ugly Itaru Hinoue art.

Yes, it is.  They really did a good job adapting it.  I think the author was actually somewhat involved with the writing or something.  Even the parts they changed (like the new characters) which would normally cause me annoyance because of the change, were done well and possibly even made it better than if they had remained entirely faithful.

Yes, even though all it does is provide more backstory for things that happened in Season 1.

Man what a let-down "Season 2" was.

Exactly. I still have no idea how people reacted to 8 episodes of the same shit. Actually, I have no idea how they managed about 14 more episodes centering around 3 themes total, about which people only marginally cared about.

I loved Season 1. Loved it. So when "Season 2" came out, I was naturally excited. I endured episode after episode of "we're trapped in an eddy in spacetime!" because a) Haruhi in a swimsuit and b) surely, that one thing Haruhi has been meaning to do before the end of summer vacation was going to be something pretty damn amazing, right? I mean, they went to the pool, caught cicadas, went to the festival and went star-gazing, among other things. Surely that one thing Haruhi was missing would surpass them all.

Yeah.

The backstory on the making of the Mikurun movie was kind of shrugworthy, and not -at all- what I would have ended the season with, let alone after the massively disappointing reveal at the end of the Endless Eight arc. I have no idea what the producers were thinking. Maybe something along the lines of "how can we drive away as many fans as we attracted, in the same amount of time?". That's the only logical explanation.

I was kinda hoping we'd see more development of the Kyon-Haruhi mutual love-hate relationship. Maybe even Koizumi's hints as to what to do would have made sense in that regard. And instead, nothing at all. Man how disappointed I am.
