Did Byakuren visit the hair stylist or not?
« on: June 07, 2010, 07:59:44 PM »
Probably discussed before but probably lost as well. Many people believe her hair is gradient. Logically, many artists draw her this way as well.

I personally disagree though. Probably others said this as well, the colour of her hair is caused by the scroll above her head. Especially since the scroll is emitting a strong purple glow. However Anthony on IRC mentioned:
?21:35:03? <Anthony> if it was that
?21:35:12? <Anthony> wouldn't the rest of her hair be multicolored as well?
?21:35:29? <Kilgamyon> No, because it's not as close to the scroll.

A good comment our Reisen Lover (Kilga) makes. We simply don't know what exactly is going on. So let's take a look at ZUN's official work.

Now there is another issue. Let's say the theory of the scroll going glowy causes this. So why is her sprite still showing the purple gradient hair when she folds her scroll? It wouldn't make sense no? Well, I personally think that would cause too much trouble if ZUN decided to change her hair colour. Because almost nobody pays enough attention in the heat of the battle to the sprite animation. Not to mention spriting is a pain in the ass anyway.

I wonder if this question was asked during the UFO interview on youtube. As far as I know they did not discuss her hair at all. Actually, Byakuren was briefly discussed in that movie.

Its just old age. Back when she was young she had all purple hair. Most of it has lost it color though. IN Touhou 13 we will see a Byakuren who have gained a couple of pounds and lost her hair color completely. That's my theory.

-----------

Other than that, its just ZUN who reached an alcohol level measured in percentages, looked at his mom and a bunch of grapes and drew a combination. No real explanation.

I'm pretty sure ZUN added the purple coloring as light from the scroll, thought it looked cool (or couldn't figure out how to do the animations like Hele mentioned) and just decided to leave it ambiguous to satisfy more people. By leaving it up in the air, both the Gradient faction and the Solid faction are happy.

I think most people accept the gradient hair because, well, it's a whole hell of a lot more interesting than brown hair.

Another interesting thing to note that I never see pointed out, is that the yellow from the other end of the scroll matches the yellowish tinge of the non-purple part of Byakuren's hair.

Agreeing with Nobu.

I propose a counter-theory. It is not the scroll illuminating her hair to appear gradient. It's her gradient hair radiating enough to illuminate the otherwise colorless scroll  :3

Then if the purple is from the top of her scroll, and the yellow is from the bottom, what's Byakuren's real hair color?! :o

Personally I like to believe her hair actually is gradient purple-to-brown, because like Nobu said, that's a hell of a lot more interesting than just brown :C

What if constant exposure to the scroll made the top of her hair permanently purple? Like magnetism or something.

A wizard did it.

No seriously, a wizard named Byakuren Hijiri did it.

When she was sealed, she had brown hair.

During her sealing state, some of her hair grew in a different color because of her Darck Magickal Youkai Enzymes.

Does Byakuren have gradient hair in the endings (or is it colored at all)?
Because I remember she wasn't holding the scrolls open or anything.
If she did have gradient hair during those scenes, that would disprove the scroll-color theory. If she doesn't, it would make that theory all the more likely.

The endings aren't colored.

Strangely, I didn't even think that the scroll could be the reason for her gradient hair when I first saw her...

I think this is the most logical assumption, especially judging from Byakuren's special ability:

The power to enhance physical abilities.

She could have 'enhanced' her hair to make it have a gradient color. She used her ability to make herself young and immortal, so how hard can manipulating her own hair color be?

I think it's gradient hair because.
-Her hands would have a glow aswell
-The scroll goes from yellow/greenish to purple. Her hair on the left has this greenish gradient (which is next to the scroll) but her hair on the right is also greenish, which provides proof for gradient hair.

same idea who i have, but is more like who the brown color is when she was human, and the purple color is a indication of her new-youkai magician body.she becomes youkai slowly, that is why the color fades.

Probably just a generic magical seal almost every Touhou has (well, they have them in IaMP).

Wasn't the hair unusually-coloured not due to the scroll, but because of the sunlight behind her?

LOL I'd like to believe that, but if that's the case then why is no part of the scroll brown??
