Ahh, um, images 44 and 70 were deviations such that they'd look a little less computer-y or whatever .

Well, if you wanted them to look a bit less computer-like, I think you'd rather choose Hiragana since Katakana was structured to look pointy.
Anyhow, some other stuff you may want to watch for if you still want to use Katakana.
img 33: You want the right side to be a bit more longer and, perhaps eliminate the fick at the end because that'll make it look like the Kanji for Power.
img 44: Looks like the Kanji for Hand, eliminate the flick at the end and make the center line curve a bit.
img 54: I don't think the flick needs to be there either, it'll make people think you want to add the accent dots,
img 70: Pertruding out stuff makes it seem like some other Kanji, more ever, this one completely disregards how the character's written.
Why I stress about the flicks and pertruding parts is because Japanese people care about which line comes first, (Hell, they're the people who made a big fuss about which line you were supposed to start writing from for the letter 'A'. Curve first, or line first?)
I'm sure if your Japanese friend there went to a Japanese school of any sort he/she had to write down the same character over and over and over again when he/she was learning how to write.
Thus, if you wish to write anything in Japanese and hope that Japanese people will understand what you wrote, you should at least put how the character was written in thought.
About the screen shots, I agree with the person who told you that, and can't make much out of the second pic.
