People are overestimating Touhou characters a bit too much?
« on: March 29, 2010, 04:29:40 AM »
Before we start, I'd like to tell everyone that I'm new here, so it's nice to meet you all!

Anyway, what I would like to say is that if people are overestimating the strength of Touhou characters a bit too much when comparing the series with characters of other series?

I remember seeing crossover pictures on Danbooru that depict battles between Touhou characters and characters of other series, and majority of the comments would say that the characters ftom the other series are royally screwed and will without doubt lose badly to the girls of Gensokyo.  Of course, there are still people who defend the other series' characters, but the majority tend to side with Touhou  more...

Such pictures that come to mind involve crossover pictures with One Piece, Godzilla, and Star Wars.

I know that some of the Touhou characters are very powerful, but do you think that some people are giving them a bit too much credit?

Discuss.

Power levels are always subjective.

No, I think it's fine. It just so happens that ZUN likes his Touhou characters extremely broken from the get-go.
This isn't a matter of raw strength or something... In theory, a lot of these characters are simply near invincible because of their logic-breaking powers.
As for the others who really don't have any cool powers... Not too sure. It just becomes a case of favorites, I guess.

Well, it's probably right to say that people overestimate how powerful touhous can be, but that's not to say that they aren't incredibly strong and would probably win many matchups anyways. Hell, Touhou gets retarded powerlevel bitchfights without even throwing in any other series.

It's easy to just give any random character an overpowered, ambiguous ability that can be interpreted in almost any fashion. Comparing Touhou characters' abilities (which are pretty much only a base for the character's danmaku and stuff anyways) to abilities of characters from other series that are actually used actively and more thought-out; it just shouldn't be happening period. It isn't fair whatsoever.

Project Shrine Maiden characters only become as overpowered as the fandom wants.

If someone (a circle? artist? writer?) wanted Marisa win a head on battle with the Emperor's Death Star, then she's free to do so.

In the end, fandom is fandom. Gensokyo is not a simple Water beats Fire equation (and in reality, water doesn't always defeat fire), and the fanbase could be less reasonable than a cat on cold water (like some nicknames given to some characters).

Like what KrackCloud said, it's a case of favoritism by the fans.

And like what Drake says, their abilities can be interpreted by any number of fashion; not the least is the reverse function of the ability (the ability to reverse the nature of the ability; like Cirno manipulating heat since heat is the absence of cold). It gives the fan base the freedom to do as they please to the characters.

But in the end, fan base is still...fan base.

Power level discussions are awful.
