"Nothing as comprehensive as a study, but quite a few on the practice and concept of a combinae."

>"I suppose it wouldn't hurt to look into the practical aspects, in case I missed something."

Patchouli nods and picks a rather large book out of a few floating bystanders, aheming and beginning.

"The combinae is a type of forbidden art formed from a basic principle of Familiar 'biology'. Familiars are masses of magic with a conscious 'soul'. This means their bodies are technically spells in themselves, therefore, are easily manipulated. Combinae stemmed from a branch of familiar researchers who sought to make a 'perfect familiar' that could adapt itself to any situation, or at least a spell capable of changing the form of a familiar.

The creator got the idea from the latter goal. He found while most magic-users couldn't directly manipulate familiars, they certainly managed to influence them with their own magical source. For example, the typical 'growth' of familiars as their owner becomes stronger is a good citation.

The first experiment with a combinae was through a spell instead of a device. The test was to find how a familiar body would react to the magic from an object being placed in it. A bear familiar and a clock was used. The clock was broken down and forced into the bear familiar's body. The bear familiar did not change 'physically', but soon developed the capability to tell the time with perfect accuracy. Later, this became a method of combinae known as 'Soul Combining', and was labeled to dangerous to continue, as further experiments led to some familiars completely destabilizing from the change.

The creator continued along the lines, eventually devising a spell that caused the introduced magic to only affect the 'body' aspect of a familiar. It was only temporary, but far safer for the familiar. It also kept the object in one piece, an obvious benefit. The creator noted that combinations that destabilized in soul combining typically caused only an increase in power in typical combinae use. He later gave up on the combinae when it became clear it was difficult to get exactly what he wanted from an object.

Combinae have still gained popularity, if only due to the incredible increase in power some combinations cause. They are still labeled forbidden due to being manipulations of a familiar. Typical combinae, bootleg or not, copy an object's magic signal and applies it into the body code of a familiar contract when invoked. The result is a meshing of the two magics, which causes a different formation of a body. Generally, a body will be similar to it's original form, gaining perhaps an appendage or two, but staying relatively the same. The bodies typically offer enhanced performance, and sometimes come with another 'power', theorized to be the latent magic in an option. Needlessly said, magic items in combinae usually apply their power to the familiar. The spell uses twice the energy to cover the typical body spell, and the 'object' magic that is introduced. This typically means an object contract is required for the familiar in use.

No combinae fusing of two familiars have ever been tried. Even the madman who created the spell thought it may be too dangerous."

Patchouli closes the book. "That is perhaps, the most informative on the subject I have in the library. Your combinae also seems to have an aspect of 'creation' to it. If you want, I can look up anything on that as well."

>"Please. I don't know much about that."

Patchouli nods, pulling out another bystander. "Ah. I think this is it.

Many familiar craftsman will tell you it is outright impossible to actually make a familiar. The soul has to exist, and they just add a body to it. However, after some unearthing, one case has made it clear it is indeed a possibility. The Familiar soul can be replicated, if proper substance is taken or made.

Only one man has practiced it, over a thousand or so years ago. He used the magic mappings of a knife and a bird. He supplied his own magic for the soul. The result was a perfectly functional owl familiar that shot knives out of it's eyes. The creation is still theoretically existent, if not in use by any familiar-user of the day. There were no ill side effects.

Many have tried to replicate his work. They typically end up with deranged familiars that are constantly falling apart, and most can't get the familiar to stay in existence for extended periods. Most use a combinae as a base, putting an item in the slot for the 'soul'. If modified, some combinae give moderately successful creations. Most do not last, and many still end up having a chance to turn on their creator.

Creating familiar souls is classified as a high-ranking forbidden art. Most who try it end up dead."

Patchouli shuts the book.

Patchouli returns the books to their former places. "You're welcome. It'd reflect badly on me if I let you run around with such a dangerous thing unaware, after all."

>Back to the Insect Forest, then.

You bid Patchouli farewell and head off to the Forest of Magic.

You suspect Marisa may be out and about, expecting you.

You manage to make it through to the Insect palace with minimal trouble. Wriggle greets you.

You ask Wriggle how capturing Meira went.

"They're bringing her back as we speak. She gave a bit of fuss, but nothing serious."

Wriggle's subjects are all insect youkai, like herself. Like all beast class youkai, they typically seem to be humanoid with outstanding animal features. A bee youkai, for example, has bee wings and antenna.

"I'd give her... Perhaps half an hour or so? Enough time to wait on, at the least.

Probably. I mean, I can't imagine someone who'd want to mess with her, myself. Then again, I'm actually logical..."

>"I'd rather not say. But she's kinda sketchy. Maybe I'm just clinging onto it even a little because I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop."

"Likely... I mean, the outer world probably doesn't even have human magic users any more. You could probably even ask the devil's librarian if shes ever met one when they were still outside. Even then, we're talking about a group or single magician with the experience and power to try and take on the creation of THAT Youkai.

I can't see such a person possibly existing outside of here."

Wriggle nods in agreement to your next point. "True, though. I'll see if I can get some spare troops."

Wriggle perks an eyebrow. "A raven, huh? You know, isn't that kind of rare in itself? I've seen a lot of crows in the tengu, and a lot of crows around, but not a lot of ravens."
