Speaking of horis, I recall I saw a video of Mushi Futari running horizontally just for the giggles and shit. Maybe one of you Cave-obsessed people can find it? :V It looked quite neat.

This thread needs moar KETUI, Crimzon Clover and huge battleships approaching fast.

And, hell yes, Hibachi will give you FEVER!

I just kind of had an idea. Let's pick a weekly game to play! It'll expand horizons and introduce people to shmups that they may not have known about or have played before. Who knows? Maybe you'll like them!

And post our highscores? :V

Why not. I'll make a sticky for it.

Here. This is a list of every shmup that is on MAME, if I understand it right. No downloads here though. Let's drop some names in here. Preferably games we've never played before-- what's the point of picking something like Gunbird or Mars Matrix when many of us have already played those?

Mind you, I've never played Gunbird despite seeing it mentioned here so much.  :V Maybe I should, right?

Ok, weird names, weird names... My friend got Sengoku Ace 2 (PS2) out of the blue. Totally caught me off guard. Especially the first comment: "Miko with big boobs!!!"

And how about Philosoma and Night Raid?

Just played Dangun Feveron after remembering that Sapz recommended this to me like 3 months ago. ;>_>

It's cute, but I just can't seem to find myself liking any other schmup except for Touhou and danmakufu. I just don't like the mechanics, I'm sorry. :S

To each their own I guess.

Nothing's stopping you from playing it, and it's not to say we'll never play any well-known and well-liked games for our game of the week, but the point of this is to try out new stuff-- and if we like it, awesome. If it's a shitty game, we can just laugh at it-- and to have some fun with it.

Philosoma and Night Raid noted. I'll take suggestions until 9PM EST, and then we can start picking a game that we can play starting Monday. How does that sound? I guess I'll throw in the first Sengoku Ace as well.

Cut by Jaimers: Well, as we were just talking about, there are tons and TONS of shmups out there to try. Don't write them all off just because you didn't get into one of them. :<

Should be better than the now inactive touhou weekly competitions because non touhou shmups have non shitty scoring mechanics.

Hey. Hey. PCB has a pretty cool system if you ask me. >_>

But yeah the rest are pretty lackluster in that aspect :V

The only thing I care about the PCB system is how to time borders.

I actually try to score on MoF when I play it every time. And I would on SA if I didn't die everytime I try to supergraze stuff. Maybe would on UFO if I could beat the game without Reds/Greens and the game wasn't such crap.

I'll suggest Triggerheart Exelica. Or Raiden 2 since the only Raiden I've played was Raiden IV, if we don't count the Fighters spinoff. Would have been Radiant Silvergun, but it wasn't on the list, too bad because I want to see what the game before Ikaruga was like.

Edit: Wait, these all work right? Or are there some that don't work on the list?

Radiant Silvergun was so on that list. However, the MAME rom of it is pretty awful.

As for Triggerheart Exelica, it's only really available to those of us with the Dreamcast game, PS2 port, or an Xbox 360. I'd like to keep this limited to games that everyone can play without having to go buy a new console or spend a ton on overpriced imports. It is a pretty great game, though. :P

Philosoma is PS1-only and not only is Night Raid non-working in MAME, the PS1 port has some serious control issues. If you really want some good suggestions for MAME, I can recommend a few since I've played an extensive amount of this and that over the years.

Well then, that leaves Sengoku Ace and Raiden 2 (?) out of the previously suggested.

What have you got in mind, Khoa?

EDIT: Oh, right. My nominations are V-Five and X-Multiply.

I mentioned X-Multiply, which is hori. Anything goes really, as long as it's accessible to at least mostly everyone.

What about freeware doujins too?  We could have a Warning Forever contest or something like that.

Hmm. I don't see why not. Maybe we can go with themes for each week, and that'll possibly help with selection. For example, this week could be MAME week and next week could be doujin week, and we could pick a few more themes and rotate/alternate through them? Or not, it's just an idea.

Air Gallet and Warning Forever added to the list.

We're up to:
Sengoku Ace
Raiden 2 (?) dunno if that works or not
V-Five
X-Multiply
Air Gallet
Warning Forever

Use regular shot to build up ring value (cancel bullets in concentrated area), when the ring value is at its highest, use your hold shot to create a chain reaction of cancelled bullets converted into gems from destroyed enemies. That's pretty much Progear in a nutshell.

What about the first Raiden?

Just cleared the first stage of Ultra on Futari without continuing then game overed on the first set of enemies in stage 2. Maybe I'd be willing to play this mode if stage 1 wasn't so fucking stupid.

You get this item, you get one item, then you use that item to get another item-- go play Mars Matrix.

5 hours left, Raiden 2 off the list now, but Raiden added:
Sengoku Ace
V-Five
X-Multiply
Air Gallet
Warning Forever
Raiden

This isn't exactly very obscure, but what about the original Strikers 1945? Seemed pretty interesting the one time I played it. :V
