Now I know a lot of genres have picked up RPG elements over the years, but FFXIII is trying something bold and exciting: a movie with RPG elements!
(Seriously, if you haven't already heard, FFXIII is 100% on rails, no towns, straight line from scene to scene, don't buy it)
FFV is the most fun to play even if it has the worst story.
FFT deserves to be its own category.
Stuffman, I now officially love you and your taste in games. (Emphasis added.)
Also: Now, now, there's a town in FFXIII! It just happens to actually be a dungeon!
And to be honest, yes, you're on rails (and I mean RAILS, people; the dungeons are STRAIGHT LINES for the first 10 hours or so) but there is actually a world map where you can run around freely, it just takes forever to get to it.
The battle system...seems a bit silly to me. The only thing you have to do is switch Optimas, and then sit back and watch your characters do their thing, and switch again if you're incredibly strategic. You don't seem to actually have any real input.
Characters...well, aside from the fact that it's an utter farce (Hope? Snow? Vanilla?
LIGHTNING?
) are interesting enough, I guess, but the design is laughable, if incredibly pretty. Everything else about the game aside, it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I suppose at least Lightning, Fang and Snow could be cool, but my knowledge of Japanese is woefully insufficient to judge this.
Overall, though, I don't think I had a lot more input on the game than my roommate did, and he was the one playing. So yeah, it does kinda feel more like a movie than a game.
(I know this because my roommate beat it around a week after it came out.)
