Touhou M-1 Grand Prix Translation Project
« on: December 31, 2009, 12:03:58 AM »
Hi! Frequent browser, first-time poster. Happy New Years, as well. I haven't seen a thread like this before so please don't shoot me if I've done something wrong.  :'(

Most of you have probably seen the Touhou M-1 Grand Prix comedies cropping up on Youtube (I'll refrain from 'manzais' since I don't know if that's appropriate grammar), likely done by dgreater1. He covered most of the 1st and 2nd edition but was unable to complete them for whatever reason. If you've heard 'CHEEEEEN!' chances are you've seen one of the comedies and know what I'm talking about.  :V

Some friends and I have been bored over winter break, so we're working on the 3rd Grand Prix. What we've done so far is on my channel. It's a pretty informal process. I work from Spanish subs if available, Silferras translates the Convulsion&ACT-SUB Chinese script, and then Shiri corrects our synthesized version from his own knowledge of spoken Japanese. Time consuming, but it works, and the comedies are hilarious so it's worth it.

Aside from plugging our work all over the place, I posted this to give people a head's up that the 4th Grand Prix is out and you can find the raw video pieces over at Murasa's Channel. In fact, if you want a list with links to -every- Manzai available, I made a page over at the Touhou Wiki.

We're going to try and sub the 4th edition, but Shiri's knowledge of Japanese is incomplete so we can't go purely off the vocals. We may have to wait for the Chinese subs or similar to pop up. If anyone here can pitch in with scripts or other help, feel free to pitch in, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I eagerly await for the Komeiji skit subs.

Yeah, I'd be able to offer some assistance. It'd be a good way to practice listening comprehension, heh.

Bump!  :V

Just finished up with Yuyuko and Youmu!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08TfMiUqks4

Hot off the press, so the quality may be bad until it's finished processing. Please wait warmly.

All that's left for the 3rd GP is Witch Doll and the TewiKourin finalists. Tewifying and I are all busy with school, NForza's got a loaded schedule too.

All of that said, if anyone here can contribute notes on the 4th M-1 manzais at all, I eagerly encourage you to do so. Every bit counts. I went through all the videos and added the de-Engrish'd Demo subs from Various1260's channel.

This means that the Komeiji manzai has become first priority.

Hi!

Tewifying just finished up the Witch Doll script for the 3rd M-1, and I'll be working with Shiri to edit and sub that all through the night. She suggested I ask, though:

Are there any particular requests for what parts of the 4th you guys want us to prioritize?
(Yes, we'll be doing the Komeiji sister's skit first*, they seem to be the most fun and popular.)
(*She may just do the Nitori/Hina commercial for the 4th while screwing around in class before that, though, since it's much faster.)

Well, that went unexpectedly fast.

Tewi thought she'd have this for me when the weekend came, but here it is today, and it took all of 3 hours to subtitle.

Witch Doll!

She's going to finish TewiKourin #2 soon if she's not too tired from class and that will be all for the 3rd M-1. After that she may do Nitori/Hina's 4th M-1 commercial first. Either way, first manzai for the 4th will be the Komeiji Sisters.

If there aren't any other requests, then yes, I'll probably be doing that as my schedule permits.

Apologies in advance for any delays or mistranslations - despite my mother tongue being Chinese, it's unfortunately not Cirno, but I'll be doing my best.

I've never seen any of this before. I checked your link and they all said 3rd edition or #3 or whatever, so I hunted for a first episode, but no dice. Closest I got was 3rd edition #1 I think. Was Rei-moo and Marisa. I also saw a Tewi and Rinnosuke.

Anyway I didn't particularly enjoy them, are those just "Bad" episodes? or is it likely that if I didn't enjoy those I probably wont enjoy viewing others?

There's no major 'first episode'- most of these skits are taken from the DVDs with the judging/scoring skipped (since that would be really time consuming- the full DVD is about an hour and a half long), but the judging/scoring sections can still be found on Youtube in raw form.

dgreater1's got a lot of the classic stuff- where the 'Jaaaooo!' and 'Cheeeeen!' memes come from, you'll probably enjoy them more.

And it's understandable if you don't enjoy them, they're pretty heavy with cultural references and Japanese wordplay, and some people just don't like translated comedy material in general because it's simply not the same.

Fortunate that you bumped this, I was just hunting the thread down to say that I'm in the works of finishing TewiKourin's Finals, which will be the last of the 3rd M-1 skits.

Yo. Seems like I got named so I may as well sign up now...

I got exams for the next couple days but I'll make time for whatever Furienify just sent me later.

@Koipop: Tewifying just finished the Komeiji thing so that's the next one up as soon as Furienify and I can get around to our parts.

I just want to point out that my Japanese is extremely limited and my only translation experience is with French (and watching too much anime - luckily I can figure out a bunch of references from that alone..."south family thousand autumns" indeed, Minami-ke.) If you find any discrepancies where you think we did something wrong chances are I did. For those of you that don't know any better, enjoy, ha.

Oh wow, I never new this project was on so quickly!
If there's anything I can do, please tell me, since if it's for M-1, I'd be more than happy!

Although since it's been so long since I did my Japanese credit course and fluency exam I dunno how much help I'll be...
(and the fact that my english vocab sucks)

鬼は外 (おにはそと)、鬼は外、鬼は外
and that's what they say during the Setsubun ceremony to scare oni (which are the depiction of misfortune and evil) out of the house.

P.S.
Since nobody seems to be talking about Yugi and Suika I'm gathering their scripts right now.
If somebody is already is already planning something for them, plz notify me so I don't end up with scripts that nobody is gonna make use of.

I just finished the translations. 8)
Anyone mind checking it over for me?

Also, should I just paste the entire thing here? since it ended up being 12pgs long in Microsoft Word.

Nvm, I just uploaded it on mediafire so those who are interested can DL it there.

This was great. Seriously. Thank you for your help, it really makes things go faster. You even picked up most of the important references, formatted it all nicely. The English we can totally deal with fixing. Thank you!
