Difficult Bullets
« on: December 12, 2009, 02:43:44 AM »
So I've been playing for a little while and I am discovering there are just some bullets that are very annoying to face.
I just want to make this topic to see what other bullet shapes seems to get on people's nerves. And maybe tell some tips on getting past said projectile.

I'll start with my top 3

1. The Prismatic Crystal Bullet

Yeah that really basic one you see in EOSD A LOT. They come in all colors and all directions, and boy getting past them is always a challenge. They normally cause me clip deaths when using faster characters or hit me head on when moving at faster paces. They really seem to play tricks on my eyes and come out of nowhere at times.

2. The Kunai Bullet

Basic stage enemies seem to fire these out most of the time. As the games go on this type of bullet didn't find its way into many boss battles. Still they seem to have an irritating tendency to cluster up. Not as bothersome to dodge, but not a very interesting bullet and most times looks kinda out of place.

3. Straight lasers

Lasers are evil plain and simple. They move pretty fast and seem to ding me when whenever I'm dodging other bullets. On their own they aren't very bad, but in a circle pattern they tend to clip right when I'm getting past a grouping.

Overall I seem to have trouble with the more common bullets.

3) Metal Fatigue bullets. Shitty hitboxes, don't play EoSD after SA extra. Period.

2) EoSD bubbles. Enough said. Shitty hitboxes. Makes some cards and noncards absurdly difficult and clippy as hell.

1) Anything EX Kogasa throws during her 1st and 2nd spellcards.

3) Byakuren's butterfly
Spellcard capture rate is 1/x where x is the number of tries, ranging hundreds. Thank god it only appeared once, and on stage 6, where all attacks are autobomb until bomb in stock = 0.

2) Ichirin's purple bullets.
Bigger hitbox than your usual run-the-mill round bullets. High rate chance in clipping me, even without Unzan's tremor. More annoying than bullet above because of it appears on stage 3.

1) Cheetoz Laser
It hates me. The feelings mutual.

Ya, that kind of pattern.

I don't get why everyone says it's easy because it isn't.

Virtually anything with animated sprites.

Like Mokou's PHOENIX TAIL.

But seriously, Byakuren's Butterfly seems like it's one of the easiest spellcards for her. What difficulty are we talking about?

3. Straight lasers

No mention of curved lasers?

I don't know if I have any bullet types I don't like, but I have recognized that I do have a bullet type I do like: directional bullets such as the arrow bullet and the aforementioned crystal bullet.  Since they point in the direction they're going, it's easier to analyze where they're going and find your safespots on the fly, as opposed to trying to find your safespots in a pattern of visually identical bullets.

But seriously, Byakuren's Butterfly seems like it's one of the easiest spellcards for her. What difficulty are we talking about?

It is one of her easiest spellcards, if you take the time to learn the static pattern.  Otherwise, it's easy to misread and clip the waves (not to mention the butterfly wave after the 7th laser, which is pretty much impossible if you don't see the safespots at about 1/3 across the screen starting from either side).  I have an embarrassingly bad record of clipping this with ReimuA even after knowing how to tackle it.

(Lunatic, anyway.)
Whether you're on Easy or you're a Lunatic, be damn proud of your accomplishments.  Don't let anyone convince you otherwise, for it's when you lose faith in your own achievements that those victories become defeats.

Can we just all agree that ZUN was terrible with lasers until SA (I'M LOOKING AT YOU MOF KANAKO LASERS THAT HAVE A BIGGER HITBOX THAN SPRITE) :V

Anyway, Sakuya's curvy knife bullets. I have had so many deaths because those things have the worst-defined hitboxes in the series. This is even after ZUN (mostly) fixed the hitboxes on bullets post-EoSD.

The absolute worst kind of bullets for me is the petal bullets like the ones used in Alice's [Spring Kyoto Dolls]. So small, and so clutte- WAIT NO, THE PELLETS. THE FUCKING PELLET BULLETS. FUCK I HATE THOSE THINGS SO MUCH.

On the other hand, I actually love non-EoSD bubble bullets and the arrowhead bullets are also quite lovely.

That's funny, lasers never gave me any kind of problems at all until MoF onward.  It's just those toothpick lasers that I hate.  I've always wished that ZUN would bring back those sword-esque lasers that Keine and Kaguya used in IN and StB.  They could do the same thing as the toothpicks, they looked cooler, and their hit-detection wasn't completely fucked up.

What are you talking about? ZUN was great with lasers until MoF. The ones before that had very lenient hitboxes and didn't activate until a split second after they appeared. If IN's lasers were like the ones in MoF-on, Kaguya would be almost impossible.

Also, oval-shaped bullets from MoF-on. In IN they were lenient enough for your hitbox to completely enter the sprite and not get hit, then WHAM, they turn into a strict bullet in MoF. And knives. Can't forget EoSD knives.

Really? I've always hated pre-SA lasers, particularly the ones Keine used. The hitboxes just confused and frightened me ):

I love SA lasers because I think the hitboxes are incredibly well-defined and give super ridiculous amounts of graze <3

I love any kind of lasers cause it gives me ton of grazan points. Not in MoF and SA (to little graze/reward ratio) btw.

Lunatic. The safespot is very hard to notice and the pattern will get me walled if I hadn't done anything active. Now the problem is, while I actively try to dodge the butterfly, it gave me impression Byakuren's butterflies are 2x bigger than Yuyuko's.

In no particular order:

1: I have to agree with EoSD metal fatigue bullets, took me some time before I learned to fly THRU the effing big bullets, and not around the medium ones on Remilia's opener, as well as that demon lord spellcard (whatever it's called)

2: EoSD knives. I swear the hitboxes for these things changes, it doesn't represent the circle hitbox you actually see in the PCB knife bullets IMO

3: Kanako's rice-whatever spellcard bullets, They're like metal fatigue bullets. Just thinking about going near one will kill you, seems more forgiving on hard than normal, haven't tried lunatic yet.

4: I like to call them "cucumber lasers" Because the first card where these really sucked for me was on Nitori's cucumber whatever its called spellcard. I don't know why, but I just can't seem to see these approaching me at ALL after I dodge an initial wave. It's like they camouflage each other or something. Another example are Yuugi's lasers

5: I forget her name, blonde short haired second last boss in UFO (shou something? I really forget), those damn curvey squiggly snakey lasers from hell. I mean seriously, can anybody read the trajectory of those until it's too late without luck? UGH!

THIS. I SWEAR THEIR HITBOXES ARE BIGGER THAN THEIR SPRITES.

And I don't know how I managed to capture it on Lunatic. It only happened ONCE.

Also ... knives. Sakuya's knives, Yuyuko's knives, Clear Kuzui Water / Yamato Torus KNIVEZZZZZ.

I think they retain the hitbox of the larger bullet after they turn small

The single most annoying type of bullet... Is the tiny white bullet. Yes, those bullets that you find EVERYWHERE in PC-98, and PoFV. If I'm moving somewhere, there just HAPPENS to be a white bullet there, if there are any onscreen. None anywhere near it, just one RIGHT WHERE MY HITBOX ENDS UP AS I'M TRYING TO DODGE SOMETHING ELSE! Those things are cursed.

Snowballs, those straight lasers which look like stretched out triangle/cat ear bullets (mentioned in OP) and pellets (if only for Kanako's 2nd spellcard, the hitboxes are bugged like fuck).

- The aimed exploding star Sariel throws out. This thing is almost impossible to see coming unless you know beforehand.
- The ninja bullets in Sariel's final form.
- The blue bullets in Mima's final form for obvious reasons.
- Ellen's spinny thingamajigers.
- Knives... just knives.
- Curvy lasers and Bright Guest Star lasers.
- Animated bullets only for when they overlap.
- Yuka's flowers because of lolhitbox.

I'll go with any bullet that uses additive blend. The bullets in Byakuren's Air Scroll are a good example.

If these were regular bullets of their kind, I wouldn't mind the spell at all. Through this stupid glowy rendering, they become a pain to read when they overlap. If it weren't for this, Legendary Flying Object would be almost as awesome as VoWG...
