This question's been bugging me: what exactly is ZUN's role in the fighting games? Just writing, or does he do the music too but with different tools, because the fighting game music doesn't really have the style that ZUN's normal music has.

or does he do nothing and is credited with "Setting and characters" or something?
Plot, (All the writing job) some of the music (In IaMP it was Onigashima and a few more, in SWR all the songs associated with Tenshi and Iku, In 12.3 it was unknown X, and a few others.) and character design for IaMP and SWR.
If you compare music like Onigashima and Wonderful heaven with the other songs in the game, the difference should be noticeable enough.
If you want to see all the songs ZUN composed, I think the Wiki would have that. (I think)

I'm pretty sure he does the writing and some of the music (he composed Suika's fight-theme in IaMP for instance, but others handled the remixes of the existing Touhou themes, etc) and the designs of new characters.

Wasn't there some controversy because Tenshi didn't come out exactly as he thought she would, or something like that?

She looks pretty much the same thing on the sketches ZUN drew... although there are no peaches, smaller hat, and the sword looks like it's more like fire comming out of a stick..

Maybe it was with her colors?

So I found this arrange: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chESw26LnC0&feature=related
And it sounds very nice, but I can't figure out how in the world it's related to Doll Judgement. Is it remixing a different song that I don't know? Was it labeled incorrectly? Or is there something I'm missing?

It's Doll Judgment. Chords are the same more or less, and you can pick out bits and pieces of the song. Try the second-long segments 0:48 and 1:22. In any case, it's very distant. Of course not every arrange has to have the melodies directly in it, but this one in particular is just further out there.

I've been reading some of the translation for the PC-98 game and was reading the dialogue between Mima and Yumemi and when Yumemi asked if Mima is dead she said she isn't yet before she told them that she is a soul. Could it be possible that Mima's body is still alive but she's just having a out of body experience?

I always figured it was Insistent Terminology. "I'm not a ghost, I'm an evil spirit!"

Also, there's a thread for that.

I know she said she's an Evil Spirit but maybe she's just Evil and a Spirit and then lost the evil part

Take Youmu's example, she isn't half dead or half alive or anything, in the touhou world spirits are just as natural as any other living thing... in fact some are born as spirits and that's their "life". If Mima said that she isn't dead, then she must have been born that way.
About Mima's evil part... well at first she was vengeful against all of mankind but that sort of went away after a while...
Could it be because she met Reimu? Who knows.

Edit: ... or did it get answered already, I'm confused.

If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with animism, i.e. everything has a spirit, but spirits don't necessarily have to have "things," so to speak.

Short version: All objects, people, and living things have spirits. My point was that spirits can also exist independently, i.e. in the form of ghosts. But ghosts aren't the only way they could exist.

I have a question.

why is it that when people remix touhou songs, they end up tossing the melody into the background, destroying the feeling of the song, or making it difficult to tell what theme it is? (that one can be good or bad depending on the song)

Because they want it to be a remix, not the same thing with a few new instruments. That applies to any remixed songs, not just Touhou ones.

This sounds like you're asking why Touhou remixes suck, which is a bit like asking why mustard tastes terrible or why green is an awful color. You can't expect an objective answer to a subjective question.

For example, this arrangement of Wind God Girl is, to my mind, an improvement on the original that fleshes out the feelings in that song a lot better than the original did. You can tell right away which Touhou song it is as well, and the main melodies are right in the foreground. This is just one example of many I could point to. So I can't even agree with the premise of your question.

"Human history and growth are both linked closely to strife. Without conflict, humanity would have no impetus for growth. When humans are satisfied with their present condition, they may as well give up on life."

Agreed with Tengukami. It's a matter of taste.
But the real reason I'm posting is to thank you for posting that song; I really like it. Better than almost all the other Wind God Girl vocal remixes I've heard.

Not sure if this sort of question is allowed to be asked, but with Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds making many people go wild around these days and starting debates on which franchise has more powerful characters, I've suddenly started wondering if Touhou characters are as overpowered as Marvel characters (and also DC characters).

Dunno how to answer that question other than to say; give MUGEN a try and put them against each other your self.

Thanks, but I prefer an answer that talks about canonical power levels rather than a game where everyone has a chance of defeating each other.

The rules sticky for this board outlines why power level discussions are verboten around here. As I think about that particular rule, I think that since it comes up often enough, it might - MIGHT - be a good idea to have a separate "let's all GRAR about power levels" thread, where those who want to engage in the futile and ultimately unresolvable discussion of power levels can do so, strictly within the confines of that thread, and everyone else who's sick of such discussions can stay away from it. Sort of like quarantining people who have some disgusting contagious illness, while everyone else goes about their daily lives. A power levels leper colony, if you will.

Anyway, that's for a mod to decide.

In answer to your question though - since it is answerable - canonically speaking, ZUN has never sat down and drawn up a power levels chart of Touhou characters. If you asked him who the strongest really was, he'd likely laugh at you. As it is, there isn't even any quantifiable data on how powerful a particular Gensokyan is; only what their power is.

Actually, the reasons given in the sticky are kinda vague ... at least, they don't up and say "they are forbidden because they always end up going around in pointless circles because they rely on empirical information which does not exist given how vague canon is about that kind of thing."

Some staff are generally wary of any discussions that essentially boil down to "argue about inane unverifiable stuff here". This is why we don't allow power level discussion in existing threads, and why some of us are skiddish about giving it its own topic, because that would really be asking for the proverbial "it".

Speaking for myself for a moment, obviously, any one individual can come up to me and go "you can trust me, I won't turn it into a flame war", and maybe for some individuals that might even be true, but I personally don't know who's going to march into that topic and get their panties in a bunch because their favorite character is getting the shaft a lot or someone presented an opinion that opposes theirs. It's nigh impossible to account for the crazies and the immature when setting up such a thread, beyond simply not setting up such a thread.

There are other staff that think it might be okay to give it a try, though, so don't take this as HARDLINE OFFICIAL STAFF STANCE, as it is being discussed.

I appreciate the input, Kilga. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and, well, how many of our Touhou/Gensokyo speculation threads ended with a resolution? How many even possibly could be resolved? Very few, I'd say.

Power level discussions keep coming up. Clearly, people want to talk about them. Rather than deleting them or shutting them down over and over, maaaaaybe we ought to have a little ol' quarantine thread just for powerlevels head-against-wall bashing.

And I can definitely appreciate the fact that there's a high potential for flamage when it comes to the topic. Here's what I'd suggest:

  • Open the thread with a warning to be respectful and courteous in the discussion, and that flaming might result in action against the offending party.
  • Should flamage occur, remove it.
  • Should flamage get out of hand, lock the thread with the notice that this thread is living proof that MotK cannot do powerlevel discussions, and archive said thread for future reference whenever it comes up again.

Anyway, this is just my amateur opinion.

I don't think we should even go into that at all. We have monitored several threads like that in the past and they failed to meet up to the expectations. To be honest I don't see the reason why anybody would want to know if Character X is strong than Character Y or Power C is better than Power D. Sure subjective remains subjective and interest areas might be different but power level discussions are the most clich? things with any kind of anime, manga, doujin, game.

Even though Tengukami makes a brave suggestion for it, I foresee little hope in it (FATE!). Mainly because we tried it before.
