Most Embarassing Touhou Moments

Plowing into a bullet immediately after defeating the stage 5 midboss in Mystic Square, thus losing a life (with bombs in stock!) and causing the 1up that would be typically gained from it to drop.

Somehow I still managed to 1cc the game after that.

On a side note, I really, really, really despise MS stage 4. Pale blue bullets on a light blue BG? Abnormally dense bullets with PC-98 hitbox wonkiness and invisible hitboxes? Random aimed WHITE pellets on top of the same light blue BG? What the hell was ZUN drinking when he designed this stage, anyway?

The real sad part is that with the exception of the random white pellet part, I can still see all the bullets fine. The stage is still annoying on lunatic though.

I'm finding MS Lunatic's difficulty to be really exaggerated lately. Maybe I've just gotten a lot better since the last time I 1cc'd the damn thing, but to me the first 3 stages seem scarcely harder than Hard and the only thing I need to bomb on is Luize's swirly-red-arrow attack of doom and occasionally one or two of Alice's attacks. Of Yumeko I'm capping her first streaming attack about 60% of the time now (her second is still a bombfest though) and I routinely perfect Yuki Solo now.

Of course I make up for this by routinely screwing up on all the stages and finding stage 4 basically impossible for visibility and bullet density reasons (one of these days I will develop proper hitbox sense for Mima. One of these days. Seriously.)

On a side note, donut (or anyone else): How do you do:
- That attack that Shinki does when she opens her wings. It's trivial below Lunatic but on Lunatic it's basically complete luck and a bullet wall.
- Shinki cheeto lasers. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus. I can do Yuki/Mai cheeto lasers fine, but Shinki's still elude me because they seem to move FASTER THAN UNFOCUSSED MIMA'S MOVEMENT SPEED. What the hell?

Heh, Shinki's wing opening attack is rage-inducingly simple. I don't know if ZUN intended it or not, but I noticed something in a video once, tried it, and realized it worked on all difficulties. To dodge this attack 100% of the time, move above Shinki. Everything above Shinki is a blind spot here. It's really jaw dropping that such a hard attack is so simple, but there you go.

As for cheeto lasers, I continue to think they're fairly easy and can beat them on one bomb. Quite simply, you need to misdirect them as much as you can. The bottom of the screen = death on this phase, so only use it when you absolutely have to.

So in my last IN 4b run, I managed to capture both Asteroid Belt and her UTTER BS second nonspell in the same run, which I've never managed to do before.  I thought, 'Hey I captured her two hardest attacks, so the worst part is out of the way!  If I can just capture the re-' *gets hit by a familiar right at the start of Event Horizon*

I was trying IN extra, and I never got past Honest Man's death before ragequiting. Here's the grand list of WHASERTKLASDFJAKSDLRUCAKLFJSD:

Dying to Luna AGAIN (IN death fairy BTW).

Getting hit by Ihakasa's Moon Curse by a knife I didn't even see.

Getting hit by Mokou's third non card for the first time in ages.

Dying to FLAW OF FUCKING FORGIVING SHRINE.

Dying to Xu Fu's Dimension by running out of room to stream.

Dying to Honest Man's death because a sudden momentary freeze canceled my button input (this is the only series where that is an actual issue and not an excuse...)

My Windows Touhou skills completely atrophied from playing too much PC-98 Touhou.

As in, I tried PCB Lunatic...and I game overed at Phoenix Spread Wings.

IN Lunatic made it to General Headquarters Crisis.

EoSD Lunatic crashed on Koakuma.

It's such a bizarrely different skillset...

I just got raped by Lunatic IN. Didn't even get through Erin, despite massive continue using.

And only minor slow down incurred. I need to figure out the custom options to get the game on windowed.

New low: I just game over'd twice on HRtP, Stage 18 Hell (Jigoku) Route. No turrets there. Which means the difficulty is the same for Easy / Normal / Hard.

@'nut: for HRtP, I'm still inclined to say that Heaven is easier than Hell, even on Hard.

EDIT: 2cc Heaven / Makai Route, game over'd to Sariel once (first time through again; 5 bombs in stock, many wasted as well), then defeated Sariel with the base resources.

On another note; this.

Don't mind the purple-ness of it (emulation), but note what's in the background. Never noticed it before...
EDIT 2: I seem to be getting better already. 1 death, no bomb clear of Mima.

Running through Phantasm, almost scoring my first victory. On the last card (Well, the last card she shares with Ran, not sure about her true last card) I went in with 4 bombs. Having beat Ran's version of this card with one bomb, I felt rather confident on using 3 max, but hopefully only one or better, zero.

I use all four, and die before her health hit 1 fourth left. Is it health based, or time based on how new parts to the waves are introduced?

Health based until she comes out with the blue butterflies. At 30 seconds, regardless of health she explodes with every wave propelling super fast.

I let one fairy live a second longer to stop myself losing a ton of faith. When the time comes, I start shooting and fly up to grab the point item...

I got through the stage portion of phantasm with one death: On the final part of the pre-boss waves. I still need to learn that...anyone have a good consistent way to dodge it?

So I play through Yukari's fight without getting hit, then die with 4 bombs in stock on BoHaY. Then I die trying to capture BoLaD without the loophole (it enters hardest spell card in the series material if you do this), then on Danmaku Bounded Field, I get through the fourth wave without the loophole for the first time ever, then die while trying to grazewhore the last wave (I FAIL at scoring, but I love grazing this attack). So in conclusion, I turned a one death run into a four death run because I got careless. Good thing I was just playing for laughs.

Check out Yoslime's (I think that's who it was) Extra walkthrough for the first part. As soon as the last Extra wave goes, go to the top of the screen and make short cuts left and right to dodge the first three waves. On the last one that appears close, head to the right edge and down. Then comes a crazy part that has them coming in from all sides. I'm clueless here. I bomb at the last second and it usually lasts the remainder of the wave.

This probably isn't that helpful since it still uses a bomb, but it's what I used every attempt.

Ahem...the FINAL part of the waves, i.e the one where you said to bomb. >_> I've survived this part before, but never have I learned to do it consistently. If I'm to ever humor beating phantasm no deaths, I need to learn how to do this.

I had typed how to clear that, but my internet decided to fuck up. And for some reason I can't access the replays archive's server. I'll just list what seems like the hardest parts.

The "X" wave : Place yourself in the center, about a quarter up the screen. Stream down to the bottom, go right or left, then go up when you reach the corner.

The group of lines : Just circle the screen, going up first. It's probably easier starting from the bottom left, but I always started from the bottom right so I'm not sure. If some bullets from the wave before get in your way, that's because you were too close to the center of the screen when they shot at you, so you have to wait a little longer before moving.

Woke up about 4am, thinking it was a great time to try time out "VoWG" (I had awesome runs last night).

Hilarity ensues as I die on the first waves (e.g.'s 3 seconds after amulets start spawning) 70% of the time. Even a newbie could beat me in playing skill at that point.

You're not that bad. Still, I am the living proof that Touhou at 4:00 AM is bad.

Actually, that's fairly normal for learning Stage 1.

Now, dying five times before reaching Kisume is when you start hitting the bar.

You just resurrected some traumas of mine. Back when the game was all new and i had to go through normal mode (which didn't happen before several months post release) i had to restart the game again... and again... and again because i died to ridiculous things in Stages 1, 2 and 3. It was horrible.

Don't worry too much about it though. When you are done with your run, stuff like that tends to happen much less. It is like that for me anyway. And even if you should go and die at Stage 1, once you have the game down you won't have to worry about lives because the game showers you with them.

If you die at Stage 1 it's worth restarting instead of leaving you a life behind later on.
