Recommend me some DS games!
« on: September 25, 2009, 06:27:11 AM »
I will soon be spending an absolutely absurd amount of time on buses.  I have a DS, but no laptop, so portable entertainment lies pretty much solely in that avenue.

I am above all a Strategy RPG gamer, though I go for regular RPGs as well.  As of now I have and/or have played:
The World Ends With You (FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIC)
All Phoenix Wright games
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Luminous Arc 1 & 2
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Etrian Odyssey 2 (F O E!  F O E!!  F O E!!!  F O E!!!)
Chrono Trigger
Disgaea DS
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (protip: DON'T recommend Dual Strike, DoR is the only remotely good game in the series if you ask me)
SMT: Devil Survivor (which I lost patience with)
Knights in the Nightmare (which I need to finish)

...and a few more I can't think of right now.

I can always replay a bunch of these that I haven't touched in a while (or finish a couple) but I'd really like something new and preferably awesome to sink my teeth into.  I'll probably bum Suidoken Tierkreis and Scribblenauts (which I've played some of) off a friend, but is there anything out there I really should go out and get?

Professor Layton (1 and 2)
Mario and Luigi RPG (PiT Bowser's Inside Story)
Megaman Starforce
Etrian Odyessy 1
Trauma Center Series

Just some of my recommendations, though.

Professor Layton is a pretty great game however!

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is pretty good, even though the first game was better. Still worth a play though.

You spout lies and blasphemy. I'm sure a whole slew of people will agree with me here. FFTA2 blows FFTA out of the water in terms of quality.

I'd suggest some great games except they're in moonrunes.

Poke me if you don't mind tussling with the Japanese language or if you already are familiar with it.

Despite that you're an RPG/strategy junkie, play Rhythm Tengoku Gold.

Fucking addicting.

I do intend to play the PL games, and I should get the Mario ones.  EO1 was even less polished than the rage-inducing EOII, or so I've heard, but maybe I'll check it out.

As for Trauma Center, NO.  I like my DS in one piece, not thrown into little shattered bits on the third Triti mission.  Which is what almost happened when I borrowed it off a friend.  PASS.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is pretty good, even though the first game was better. Still worth a play though.
Denied.  It was a piece of utter crap.  The game was ungodly slow, had terrible gameplay and randomness issues, and the most pathetic excuse for plot and characters I've ever come across.  I cannot believe I ever finished it.

I'd suggest some great games except they're in moonrunes.

Poke me if you don't mind tussling with the Japanese language or if you already are familiar with it.
I'm working on that.  But I'm basically starting from scratch, so unless it's easy to figure out and/or has a walkthrough and script translation...

Yeah, I just remembered that, rushed to this thread, and saw that you already posted it.

Rhythm Tengoku Gold/Rhythm Heaven is another dear favorite in my DS library.

Mario and Luigi Partners in Time.

Not quite a regular JRPG, has some unique systems and a lot of humor.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is not quite as deep as the original, but still really addicting and satisfying. I liked the art in A2 better than the original, and Gria are incredibly cute and fun to use.

FFTA was decent, and I'll let you come to your own conclusion about whether it's Awesome or not.

I would give Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time a major NO.  Superstar Saga (GBA) makes it look like a dual-screened waste of money.

I would also recommend Fire Emblem (GBA, find it used because it came out in 2003) and Super Mario Advance 3 (Yoshi's Island) if you can find it.  Call me old, but I think the GBA games were better overall than most of the DS games I've seen.

Also, the first two AWs were okay.  DS was cheesy, agreed.

Superstar Saga was much better, yeah.
If you want to expand the games into the GBA realm, get Final Fantasy VI. Classic game, can't get too wrong with that.

Also I liked The Sacred Stones over the original Fire Emblem, personally. Dunno why, maybe because it was easier(?)  :V

I'll second Megaman Starforce. And also the GBA Fire Emblem games as well. There was Blazing Sword, which u? mentioned, (It was retitled to simply "Fire Emblem" in its localization) and then there's also Sacred Stones as well, which while not as awesome, is still pretty nice IMO. Since GBA is being mentioned now, I'd also recommend Lunar Legend, which is a pretty nice one, as well as Golden Sun, both the original and Lost Age.

The Sacred Stones is decent -if- it's the first one you've played because you don't know what you're missing :V
(I played FE8 first and I think that's why I'm the only person I know in FE circles who likes it to any degree.)

Seconding Golden Sun as well.  I thought FFVI was decentish; I wasn't that good at working the broken game mechanics~

Superstar Saga was much better, yeah.

And the new one is not a disappointment.

I'll second Megaman Starforce.

Keep in mind that the general reception seems to be that 3 is the best.

Also try Pokemon HG/SS once they come out

I really do have to agree, either one of the Trauma Center games... though if the ride is going to be bumpy, you won't be able to play worth a hoot. Couple of mystery games might be Trace Memory or Hotel Dusk. A great puzzle game you might try is Meteos; seems like a mix of Puzzle League and Tetris but is an amazingly occupying game. Oh yes! Maybe Elite Beat Agents if you can find it.

I do NOT recommend Metroid Hunters and Final Fantasy 3 DS.

Trauma Center 2, don't get the first one since the missions are rather bland and suffer from bad controls. The sequel fixed all those problems- it has some of the greatest video game music too.

Ketsui Death Label-The only problem I have with this game is that butterfly like boss-it's a bitch to fight, but it's probably my favorite DS game.

Strategy Games?

"Ninja Town" and "Fuuun! Dairoujou" xD ; Have Ninja cuteness and are challenging! (as far as I can tell)

Ninja Town: Build ninja huts of a certain ninja type (melee and long-range), houses for stat-modifiers, Mr. Devil sends monsters at Ninja Town by waves (15-ish waves). Use tokens and Ol' Master Ninja skills to aid your ninjas. Keep those monsters from going past the stage.

Fuuun! Dairoujou: Japanese Only. Place ninjas of certain type, ninja opponent go to the stage in waves (30-50-ish waves). Keep the other ninjas from destroying the dojo.

Shiren the Wanderer DS (Great time killer, tons of replayability, a bit frustrating though)
Kirby Super Star Ultra (Short but fun, even more fun if you have someone else on the bus with a copy)

And that's all I have that hasn't been mentioned already.

Anyways... I mostly agree with everything else suggested here for games.

I am a massive FE fan and have played almost every game in the series to death(though the DS one is NOT one of the better iterations).  In fact, I've played pretty much everything I care to play on the GBA (and quite I few I don't), as it was my system of choice for a few years.

Contact
Megaman Zx
Spore (kinda easy but addicting)
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (Lot of singing)
Puzzle quest (Don't get the galactic version)
Rune Factory 1, 2, and 3 (coming soon)
Suikoden
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga - Endless Frontier
Contact bored the hell out of me very quickly.

And somehow, I don't know how, despite that fact that fanservice and an absolute PLETHORA of boob jokes almost always very quickly turn me off from a game, I beat SRTOGS:EF (which also has one of the longest game names ever, up against a couple SMT ones).  I even enjoyed it, somewhat.  I must have been desperate.

no

but that only makes me want to play them HARDER

btw this is from about a year of inactivity with my DS. if it were PSP games we were talking about, I could help you with more relevant games.

I feel like this thread is gonna turn into a "best game for DS" thread, which always end in disaster. Just weigh your options, but you already have some of the better RPGs for the DS on there. The only options left are kinda controversial (regarding quality) ones.
