If paladins were created to make religious people happy, the plan failed. The only way D&D would please fundamentalists would be if it stood for "Daisies & Daffodils" and had classes like Boy Scout, Missionary, and Ascetic, where there were no monsters, no one fought, no one died, and the action of the game was like, "OK, you enter the church. What do you do?" - "Why, kneel and pray, of course!" - "Congratulations, that's 1,000,000 God Points. You are now a Level 55 Parishioner."
