Your First RPG Experience
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:00:54 PM »
I was looking through my Book of "1000 Games to play before dying" and i kinda got inspired to ask this.
What was your first experience with RPG games? Which game? What console? Did you like it?

Well i guess i gotta start myself... *Ahem*:

My first RPG game was a PS1 game called "Chrono Cross" (If you don`t know, it was an indirect sequel to Chrono Trigger, occurring on another area called the El Nido Archipelago.) I had never heard of Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG at that time, but i knew about the genre. Okay so let`s get down to Gameplay.
As i saw the intro (Which for me at the time was awesome) i got pretty excited to play and oh boy, it was a great experience for me (It`s my opinion), i loved all the aspects of the game, the story, the characters, the battle system, the graphics and my favorite... Music, i was always a fan of Pianos and Violins and Flutes, but this just made a mark on me.
Then i played Chrono Trigger on the DS and liked it just as much as Chrono Cross, but i heard that a lot of the Chrono Trigger fan hated Chrono Cross, i know it`s not Chrono Trigger 2, but could someone explain me why hate it too much without even trying the game for real and seeing how the sequel had so many elements inherited from Trigger? I mean, it just tried to make it`s on legacy instead of following his predecessor`s.

Hope that wasn`t too bad and that people share their experiences too. :ohdear:

Tabletop AD&D, 1e. Awesome times. Got so into it my parents used to hide my books from me to try and keep me from playing. Like that's going to stop a kid with a stash of dice in his closet.

Hard to say after that. It's a toss up between Nethack or DragonQuest.

I think I started on Pokemon, then borrowed some of the Game Boy Dragon Warrior rerelease games from a friend and kept playing em along with Dragon Warrior Monsters(man, I sunk so many hours into that.  Never did beat the ultimate final battle thing though, but alas.)...

It was probably Dragon Quest, but I'm pretty sure it was Super Mario RPG that got me really into the genre. Then Pok?mon came along and I was just obsessed with it. Then later on I got Kingdom Hearts and that introduced me to Final Fantasy and so on.

I'm unsure if this counts, but my first was technically Diablo 1/2, but the first one I really independently played on my own without any assistance was Runescape. This probably explains my inherent like for MMOs, though I'll miss the simpler times...

It was Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door for the GameCube. Had a great time playing through it, but it felt like a really weird transition from Super Mario World. I think it was the way that each location looked and felt very distinct that got me into it at the time, it gave me a sort of curiosity as to what the next place?ll be like. Kinda gave me a real sense of adventure I guess.

For traditional RPGs my first one was D&D5e with some friends on Skype though heavily homebrewed by my DM to make it more cinematic ?n combat focused. Had a bit of a shaky start getting familiar with the rules but I guess that's normal for any newbie. We only played about four or five sessions before some things in the group and in real life caused it to break up about a month ago, but I had a good time while it lasted(even though I was the only one who mostly roleplayed through text =v=?).

Does Castle of the Winds count? I mean, it does have leveling up, as well as swords and sorcery, but I guess it is more of a roguelike. Plus back when I played it, my english vocabulary was like maybe a dozen words, so I understood almost nothing that happened which wasn't obvious, meaning I am not sure if it counts as me "playing" it.

If that's not it, it was either Pokemon or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.  :flamingv:

Tabletop RPGs I only played 5+ years later...

In my opinion it counts, even being rogue-like it`s still an RPG, kinda like how Metroid Prime is both a Platformer and a FPS.

As far as I remember my first RPG was Pokemon Blue. Baldur's Gate 2 was definitely around there somewhere too, and I'm not sure which order they actually fell in for me. To date I still don't think I've played an RPG better than Baldur's Gate 2 either.
I made a PADHerder. It's probably out of date though.

I'd have to say Pokemon Gold and then the original Paper Mario after that.

I guess my first was Pokemon blue way back in middle school, though I never really thought of it as such. Golden Sun was the first RPG that really sold me on the genre as a whole.

I loved that game sooo much! Isaac`s Battle Theme is glued to me forever. I can see why it sold you on RPGs.

I'm gonna jump on the Poke-train and say my first RPG (that I remember the name of, anyways) was Pokemon Blue. I never beat it until I was an adult, but I was hooked on the series since then. I played Silver, then Sapphire (which was the first game I beat), then Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold, Black and Black 2, Y, and Alpha Sapphire (because Kyogre is my favorite legendary). I didn't beat either of the Pokemon Gamecube RPGs, but I did beat most of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. I'm currently working on Super MD now.

Golden Sun was the first RPG that really sold me on the genre as a whole.
I loved the first two Golden Sun games, and I was so heartbroken by Dark Dawn when I finished it ;n; Why Camelot, whyyyyyy~?!

Yoshi's Story was my first RPG since it was addicting to play when I was a little kid then Pokemon Red and Blue came along too, so I'm basically a RPG addict.

Everyone saying really old games here, but my first RPG was Pokemon Pearl when I got my DS something like 8 years ago as a birthday present. I've never finished it.

My next RPG would be LoZ: Spirit Tracks because trains. I never finished this one, either.

Legend of Sword and Fairy. In English, it's the Golden Sun series (I've only recently completed Dark Dawn and contrary to popular opinion I found it to be quite good).

Pokemon Red for sure. Doesnt seem like quite an accomplishment now, but back then it was the first game I managed to log at least 100 hours into (not counting subsequent playthroughs) and the first jrpg I got 100% complete. Subsequently I also 100%'d Blue and Yellow on their own as well.

I was in the Gen 1 Pokecraze so long I never had the thought to get a new Mons game until Pokemon Diamond.

These days I can see how badly Gen 1 has aged but hot damn I played the shit out of those games while I was still naieve. Colleseum, Snap, Hey You Pikachu, played them all. Pokecraze was strong in those days

I'm fairly confidant my very first RPG was the first Final Fantasy. It's not the RPG I have the strongest memories for from that time of my life, that's be either FFIV or Lufia 2, but I'm almost positive I played FFI first.

It's been so long, but I think my first RPG (that I played, I'd seen my dad play other RPGs when I was a little kid) was either Dark Cloud or Kingdom Hearts. Never finished Dark Cloud, and Kingdom Hearts as a kid had me utterly stumped on the final boss so I ended up replaying the game like three or four times, stopping right before the final boss sequence and then restarting because I couldn't beat it. :V

My first RPG was the original Final Fantasy. The box came with an incredible amount of goodies including a bestiary and poster. The instruction booklet was somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 or 90 pages long and provided a walkthrough up to the halfway point of the game. They named their team after Star Wars characters.

FRED, BOB, GUS, and DUDE, who were two fighters, a red mage, and a black mage (because nobody needs healing ever), set forth on a great adventure. Their first TPK was to a voracious pack of cockatrices on the third floor of the Earth Cave on their way back up from beating the vampire. I've been instilled with a fear of that status effect ever since. Unfortunately, their journey was cut short. After exploring the upper floors of Gurgu volcano, either my brother or I accidentally jostled the NES and that was enough to disrupt the battery. Remember to hold RESET while SAVING your game, LIGHT WARRIORS!

That was nearly 25 years ago. :ohdear: :ohdear: :ohdear: :ohdear:

I think the first RPG I played was some sort of Dragon's Quest, or Monster Rancher-esque game on the Gameboy.  I remember that my friend got a glitched monster whose hp never went down, regardless of what you did to it.  He got to these incredibly late-game bosses with a stupid bug.

The first Fallout. It was around my 11th birthday, the game wasn't localized and my computer was barely powerful enough to handle it, so I couldn't quite enjoy the game to its fullest extent, but shooting cows with the Alien Blaster was still fun.

I played a ridiculous amount of Ultima Exodus for the NES when in elementary school.

.....though "Played" is a bit of a stretch though, as I could never figure out how to do dungeons properly or even proceed with the plot so it was limited to having fun at character creation to make the most fashionaaaaaabluh team, beating up enough goblins to give my party all blowguns, and picking fights with townspeople/the king for chuckles.

For me it's Pok?mon Crystal on the GBC. It was the first game that I played for more than 30 or so minutes at a time.
