Instruments used in soundtracks
« on: October 18, 2015, 06:39:56 PM »
We all love Touhou songs right? (maybe left)
But I was wondering what instruments were used to make one beautiful piece of music composed by the Honourable ZUN.
I'm gonna ask first. If this is a chain of asking and answering then I prefer each to ask only one at a time. Like the What if... topic.

PCB and EoSD stage 1 theme,
PoFV Cirno's theme,
Charming Domination ~ Who done it? (PCB)

Well I know in the two versions Charming Domination that for the Yukari version of the song (and for Necrofantasia) the primary ZUNpets were swapped out for harpsichords.

So, the standard trumpet is much more different than the ZUNpets? If yes, then is it that rare? Because I want to buy one.
And, does Youkai Mountain ~ Mysterious Mountain uses a flute or blowing musical instrument?

OP, these tracks have over 5 instruments... be more specific. Is the instrument playing the lead melody? When does it start playing?

Well I know in the two versions Charming Domination that for the Yukari version of the song (and for Necrofantasia) the primary ZUNpets were swapped out for harpsichords.

What you're hearing is a synth stack. A harpsichord sounds like this. There's not a single harpsichord in either of those tracks.

So, the standard trumpet is much more different than the ZUNpets? If yes, then is it that rare? Because I want to buy one.

The ZUNpet is a set of samples (recordings) of a common trumpet being played with mariachi-style vibrato. These samples are resynthesized and played by a hardware synthesizer.
This video shows the difference between "normal" trumpet vibrato and mariachi-style vibrato: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzlTlPTGeAw
Let's just say... you'll have a lot of trouble trying to make your trumpet playing sound like a ZUNpet in real life.

It's bottle blowing.

I have a bunch of bookmarks of instrument lists, but my browser keeps crashing on me when I'm trying to paste them in, so I'll post them up later.

Edit: http://www12.atwiki.jp/touhousoundfont/pages/17.html
the site above has a list of instruments by game by song. Every song from EoSD to LoLK, including CDs.

Ah, synth stack.  I just did not know how else to describe it since I had no idea how it was made or what was sampled.

I just can't see how you'd possibly identify it as a harpsichord. :'P

If I remember correctly, some of the SA OST had harpsichords in it as backing instruments.

I'm positive that it was used in Heartfelt Fancy.

I think my favorite instrument of ZUN's has to be the violin he used in UFO.

That's Reed Romance, not a violin. It's just a really low pitch.

he does use St.Strings as backing there though (and in many others), that's kinda violin-y

I heard that many disliked ZUN's electric guitar. I hate saying 'hate' because,
