Just finished getting 3x Beast Killer rare steals in the Great Sea Trench with Thief Knife bringing me to 4 of them counting the one you get as a treasure. Grinding rare steals is horrible, even more so when you have to do it with Thief Knife.

Now I need to get some Dragon Whips from the Stingray, but obviously it's not wanting to drop them. Not sure how much I'm going to need/want. It's not like I even get experience from Stingrays either, so this isn't even going to help my survivability any outside of do more damage to Shinryu and Grand Cross part on the final boss.

Edit: Going to go with 3 Dragon Whips. I do have a Chicken Knife after all, and I don't think the Dragon or Creature weaknesses would push the damage enough to outweigh the Chicken knife. Having 4 Beast Killers is a waste for the same reason, should have only stole 2 of those. Just need 1 more whip from the Stingray then I can go start the final area. I'll probably have to do it in a few runs since I'll likely need a few different releases.

I think the only final dungeon bosses I really need releases for are Shinryu for both Berserk and Blind(not sure whether to try for Rainbow Wind or Needle for Blind), and maybe Necrophobe to safely remove the barriers, though I'd definitely grab some 25% HP damage ones for the final boss. Even though I don't think I'll need to have the HP for Almagest, I might end up having it anyway with those final dungeon runs. I may do a run of Istory too and maybe try to get some Mirage Vests to help with Shinryu which would also get me some nice levels hopefully.

Not quiiiiiiite FJF, but the sort of challenge gimmick that might also appeal to y'all when FJF is over and/or people start burning out on it specifically. From ultrafilter in the FF5 challenge LP megathread that started with a solo all-abilities-available 'zerker not long before FJF started.

Quote
This thread's been solo runs so far, but one of the other interesting (and slightly less demanding) challenges that I've seen is splitting the jobs across characters so that each job gets assigned to exactly one character. Just for fun, I've written a randomizer that will make the assignments for you. It guarantees that each character gets at least one job from each crystal, but beyond that, there's no attempt to balance anything. You might have Galuf be three different kinds of mage, you might have a Mystic Knight/Bard/Chemist, or anything else. Just click on the "Run Code" button at the bottom right, and the assignments will be printed out at the bottom of the screen.

Edit: The site I used looks like it allows anyone to edit the code. I'm pretty sure that the link I gave will point to the original version no matter what changes are made, but just in case, the code is on Pastebin too.

Sounds like fun and I'm considering doing it myself in the near future :3

Got Blue Mage and Knight thus far.

We rejoin our heroes who learned that if it's worth doing...

It's worth overdoing.

Then doing some more.

And then doing it to death. GOOD JOB on culling the local turtle population!

The extra 3 levels gained by all of this grinding help make such short work of Titan I can't get a good picture of him being stomped.

The puroroboroaoborationaaaaabluhs are a different matter all together considering their ability to self destruct and lack of a good multitarget captured monster. Good thing I learn that these guys are weak to silence after! :fail:

It still isn't TOO too bad.

Manticore isn't too bad either.

I'm just itching to get outta here after a whole lot of fast-forwarded grinding.

With a shrug of indifference, we leave all of our obligations behind on a blind gamble and then throw a killer party that results in this scene: Out in the middle of nowhere and sauced out of our gourds. Yay, adult choices!

Monty breaks the 1k damage barrier and the abductor ain't no thing.

"I have your friends captured... in high definition!"

Galuf ignores all warnings regarding proceeding to Exdeath's castle, and Exdeath promptly forgets his threat. THANKS!

Galuf promptly switches to Chemistry and I realize he's a touch underequipped but whatevs.

After scuffling about for a spell, it's high time to perform our first bit of experimenting with the new job.

Galuf heartily quaffs a giant tonic and speed shake and it doesn't take me long to realize that it both doubles his survivability for boss fights but doubles his healing rate in a pinch.

And Gilgy scarpers with just a wee chemist scratching his nose.

With the party saved, it's time to casually saunter out of the palace of the greatest threat this world has ever faced.

Monty puts his sneaking skills to good use and we're done for this brief update. Such is the fate of Team Solid Walrus. Join us next time for the continuing adventures of Team Battle Over What's In The Fridge or Team Three Blue-Blooded Royals and Their Friend The Bum.

2x Beastmaster 2x Dancer is finished. I decided to not bother with the 3rd dragon whip even though it would have been useful.

Captured an Aegir before entering the final dungeon.

Took a few tries to get the Omega !Calm thing to work out in my favor.

The rest of the dungeon went decently well. Got to the final save without much trouble. Captured Mammon for Berserk after beating Twintania.

Shinryu took a few tries for Berserk to actually bounce off one of my 2 Reflect Ring characters, but with that and Blind from Aegir's Rainbow Wind, it was easy.

I was too lazy to go back and capture some 25% Max HP full party release monsters. So I didn't have any monsters to release against the final boss. I did have Mirage Vest for the 2 beastmasters for the trick, but the Dancers were using Rainbow Dress for more Sword Dance.

I wanted to go with Dancers with Equip Whips and Beastmasters with Equip Ribbons. I ended up switching the Beastmasters over to Dance secondary since I needed the extra potential Sword Dances since Bartz and Krile were being unreliable with their Chicken Knife and Beast Killer dances on the Almagest part.

First form is quick with Chicken Dance and Maneater Dance since that form is classed as Human type. For the second form I just spammed Dance on the Almagest part(Chicken Knife for Bartz, Beast Killer whip for the other 3) and hoped for enough Sword Dances to kill it while reviving occasionally. I won the first time that I actually got enough Sword Dance procs to get rid of the Almagest part since switching over to Dragon Whisker for 2 of the characters let me do enough damage to Grand Cross part to reset its AI scripts so that potentially dangerous attack was never seen. Then I killed the physical attacker part right after the magic part took a turn, revived the other characters then used Magic Lamp for Odin.

Edit: Started up a new run since it was approved quickly. I'll be starting from a Water Crystal Save this time as the first job was Berserker. Being at a water crystal already means rolling my second job, which was Ninja. Quadzerk for Liquid Flame is going to be horrible(but at least it's not Sandworm or the final boss). I'll probably go GBA this time as well. Underflow isn't really that broken at low levels anyway, and Beastmaster is still a possible draw for Fire and/or Earth rolls which would allow for an easy Omega which definitely is more important a possibility than duplicating stuff endgame with the Thief knife on the original version.

It took me grinding to 40-42 to do it, but my first victory of the year has arrived!

Now, let's do a 750 ru......n... White Mage. Well, time to plink at enemies until I get my Water job.

...Time Mage! Now my class setup is different from how my 750 in last year's Fiesta was (last time it was Red Mage). This also means I can kill Shinryu AND Omega!
Did you bring a light?

Grinded a lot for Liquid Flame quadzerk until i noticed 2 of my characters had HP that would let them survive 4 Blazes assuming they weren't hit by something else. Went at it then. First try went badly, second try was a clear with only Lenna alive at 3 HP left.

Ninja let me grind the Black Flames. Did so until it was mastered. Pretty much sped through the rest of the game after that since I was overleveled by just throwing lots of scrolls and weapons. Didn't even use Chicken knife outside of the agility boost because it was so weak still.

The other 2 classes were Dragoon and Chemist(Gilgabot sure loves giving me Chemist this year, not that I'm complaining). I didn't even bother getting the Dragon Lances(though combining them with Dragon Kiss turning enemies into Dragon Type would have been fun). I just farmed a lot of Dragon Fangs and Turtle Shells, grabbed all Dark Matter chests in the pyramid, then rushed the rest of the game.

Omega was pretty much mostly solo'd with Ninja with Mix(not a true solo, I had others help with the buffing before they died) then revived them near the end for the screenshot. Shinryu was Bacchus Wine followed by Dark Sigh then boosted my berserker's level. For the final boss, I entered with my Berserker dead then buffed up with Mixes in form one. Form 2 didn't stand any chance.

Galuf heartily quaffs a giant tonic and speed shake and it doesn't take me long to realize that it both doubles his survivability for boss fights but doubles his healing rate in a pinch.
Assuming you're referring to item/potion use, that last part is actually thanks to the Chemist's passive Pharmacology.  You know, as if that class wasn't redorkulous enough  :V

-----------------------
Team Crittermancers, assemble!  Onward out of the desert!

Papa Tycoon starts buffing up his Father of the Year application by playing hide and seek with his daughters daww how precious.

...and then quickly negates it when he drops us down some ancient mystery hole presumably to our deaths  :ohdear:

Galuf doesn't appreciate the rest of the gang leaving him for dead lost in an ancient mystery prison hole.  But with our comrades all assembled we wander through the ruins and start hitting buttons.

Earthquake inducing buttons of course.  However this time instead of trashing our ride, this earthquake leads to an even cool one that can fly!  So cool that lobsters want to tag along too!

Cray Claw is hilariously weak to my Thundara !Spellblade so not much to say here.  I channel Cinderella once again to summon the squirrels, which despite not being able to hit flying enemies have no problem teleporting up to my airship to do my bidding go figure.

HALLO? appears to be quite food-motivated much like my cat.  She yells a lot mRRrrrawrROWw which kind of sounds like HALLO? sometimes so it's totes logical.  To the skies!  Again!  For realsies to the Earth Crystal this time!

The first thing I do is pick a fight with some future Beastmasters and lose whoops.

The next thing I do is swing by ye olde hometowne where some lucky punk who rolled Bard is living in my old house.  On a similar note, how does anyone ever leave/visit?  It was only accessible by airship and we had to unearth that sucker from a thousand year old ruins.

Clearly HALLO? is currently in the middle of his rebellious teenager years during the events of FF5 - dying his hair a natural color.

I love this version so much.

Our free airship isn't good enough at airshipping to make our way to the Earth Crystal so time to pilfer some unobtainium and beat up the turtle who doesn't take kindly to us breaking and entering his house.  On the other hand, given the timespan of the game thus far means he is either a squatter or an intergalactic train hopper so really he can't get that mad.

That work ethic is why they're fixing the ship and I'm daydreaming about eating mashed potatoes.

No seriously guys, this time it's going to work perfectly!

The next objective is straight ahead for Team Got The Golden Ticket To Willy Ronka's Soul Cannon Factory Yes I Know I Used That Joke Last Year I Don't Care.  I'm already working on tomorrow's update which will take us through the end of Act 1 and then hooray I am caught up and will actually play again  :V

Blue Mage is crazy. Level halving > Level 5 death has worked on a number of enemies thus far, including Archeoaevis and Crayclaw.

Level 5 Death on the earlier forms of Archeoaevis causes it to lose its sprite?

Anyways. My team composition is... Blue Mage/Knight/Beastmaster/Berserker.

Well. This is still better than Berserker/Berserker/Red Mage/Samurai.

Been so long since I start this run again. Been busy with things and trying to finish the Advance version since I didn't finish it yet.

That aside, Team Man and Two Grieving Woman is already out from the ruins, losing Gramps in the process, they decided that they want to follow Gramps since they don't have family anymore.

For that, we need to find another Gramps and his kid. First order to do is apply some rock on a bigger rock, sounds easy huh? NOT!

Just how do you beat the crap out of this pile of bombs that can regenerate?

Turns out that they can be beaten when they're out of steam, so I beat the crap out of them, but it took around 15-20 minutes game time I think.

The rest of the rocks are a breeze.

And so, as our hero finished their errands, they now must enter some place unknown by most others, and it is oddly shaped.

Thus we stop here, as we will continue with this team of orphaned royalty. See you then.

We rejoin our heroes on their frantic, panicky escape from Exdeath castle, invariably picking fights with couples enjoying the view and weather along the Big Bridge. Mind you, those couples are between the unholy union of robot chariots and cats with fake wings.

Gilgy shows up in a noble attempt to stop the team from causing trouble. I try to get cute here by thwacking Gilgy with a silenced sword...

But it doesn't stick. Luckily Old from Monty's Ancient Sword does and that pretty much seals the deal.

Well THAT'S not ominous at all!

The force field conveniently smooshes up against the far side of the bridge and flings the party HALF A WORLD AWAY and they land UNHURT. That's how physics work, alright.

Moseying along quickly reminds me that the lamprey things or whatever they are prove good for grinding for a quick spell. I capture one in the process. It uses Transfusion, which would be fantabulous if you had any method of choosing which party member to use it on. A fairy orc captured later poses the same problem: You have no choice over who will be healed/buffed/etc. for single target spells like this.

The same goes for single target attacks used on a pack of monsters, but at least you can pick and choose when to use it and we can save the monster up for release then. When the party is in trouble, you want that Band-Aid right where it's needed most ASAP and Beastmaster's options are limited, time-consuming, and clumsy.

Thanks for existing, middle of nowhere town! Hi Potions? Absolutely. I fill my stock. With a Chemist in tow, these are my workhorse source of healing for the rest of the game.

And a full !Drink menu? Yes please.

Gee thanks for the guidance, kid. Good thing there weren't readily visible si-oh wait.

And something to look forward to!

Since I've heard this is such a thing, I pounce all over the Break spell for Mystic Knight.

Monty's got some pretty sweet moves and is rewarded thusly.

And then brusquely states that helping your buds is more important than being a hobo. What a pal!

Nope you're not leaving yourself a wide-open target for that one.

Hey lookie here! Time for some experimentation.

As stated previously, !Control works just about everywhere so long as it's a random encounter.

The Shield Dragon doesn't stand a chance. They actually give a rather mediocre 1000 gil and 2500 exp. though. Not a big deal. I DO capture one of the things though.

It uses the infamous Almagest. Not really worth keeping around much considering the rather pitiful ~750 damage it does, but still a sight.

I've been in this cave for 3 seconds and we've already encountered two Moogle Eaters. Surely our new found friend is in great shape right about now.

Since there are some meddling blobs in our path, let's give that supposedly broken Break Blade skill a go.

Whoops it kicks ass. I'll remember this for any random battle with serious threats.

This guy can be a bit hard to deal with from what I remember last year. Namely, this dude becomes an issue due to the sheer number of attacks it can pull off in quick succession.

I don't pull any punches and down goes the beast.

After going up until Exdeath's Castle without much of anything in the way of healing last year, this is such a comforting sight.

The cherry on top is the addition of a new skill which will see quite a bit of use!

I of course have completely forgotten the route and the penalty for avoiding said route beyond "DON'T GO IN THE DESERT YOU DIPSTICK."

I survive unscathed, and after getting lost in the woods, am rewarded for my deeds.

There's a Mitch Hedburg bit in here somewheres.

Through the powers of ~PLOT~ there emerges the potential to travel to the next important area.

And suddenly I'd rather be heading back to live in the woods with the unwashed masses there.

It must be nice to have a squadron of quintuplets running the shops. I do a quick inventory check and everyone gets the chance to rest. Such is the fate of Team 'Scientific' Experimentation and Fuzzy Animals DO !Mix. Join us next time for the continuing adventures of Team Not The Kind of Convention I Signed Up For or Team The Knights Demand a Shrubbery.

It's probably this way with a lot of vets. Gimmicky tricks to bowl through a fight can be really fun the first time around, but just plowing through stuff by exploit after exploit gets a bit dry. Using Banish on Byblos this year and Magic Hammer on Omniscient last year? Fun. Would I do either next year? Probably not unless I was having trouble or outright bored, respectively.

Team I'm My Own Personal Lightning Rod takes out Soul Cannon's side guns and is ready to go face to not-face with one of the pain-in-the-ass-est bosses in the game depending on your party make-up and the RNG gods.  I had the former on my side in the form of !Spellblade and Thunder Bow...

....I did not have the latter in terms of having my entire team qualify for AARP cards before I took the launchers out.

It doesn't take long to start doing peanuts for damage.  Access to !Animals was actually quite interesting to have in this battle.  The critter you wind up with is determined by a roll between 0 and your current level, so I knew I was done for when I stopped seeing Nightingale and therefore my level was in the single digits.

I like those numbers a whole lot more.  I should also mention that it is impossible to see if HALLO? got hit with Old or not in his fashionable Mystic Knight threads oops.  As long as I had one person who dodged those pesty chroniton particles and could dish out the damage I was golden.

Once again I am convinced I'm in some alternate reality Disney movie where all the animals are friends  :3

Pops comes back and gets another point in the Father Of The Year category by teaching us a great SAT word.  Unfortunately that whole "words will never hurt me" line doesn't fly when it's up to us to take out Archeoaevis.

Reminiscent of FF3's Hein battle (aka the only time Scholar is useful, man I don't even want to imagine doing a 4JF with that game) this sucker changes his weakness on you pretty quickly without any sort of cue.  I know it's in a pre-set order but I wasn't about to sit down with my calculator and ~Fiesta math~ out when he was vulnerable to what so I just kinda had to hope I wasn't going to be healing him oops.

His final form is the only one that comes with any sort of fanfare, and it's then that he starts getting cheeky and busts out confuse.  HALLO? no you have the Ancient Sword please don't proc it on any-

 :fail:
Eventually after much plinking he goes down, not a hard battle but it's just a bit of a drag to get through.

\o/
wait no I think this is bad

Krile arrives in a Mode7erite!  Fantastic!

Her presence bops the amnesia right out of Galuf.  Again, I just love this game's spirit.

welp that can't be good

;___;

And to the surprise of no one the structural integrity yet again is linked to the crystals not being asploded.  On the plus side we're out of them so we're in the clear from here on out on things collapsing/exploding/violation of sound engineering designing around us right??
Spoiler:
spoiler: no

Here is where I rolled for my final job - Dancer!  Man that'd go great with that ribbon I didn't bother getting from Karnak huh :fail:

Godspeed mooncat Galuf on your journey back home o7

Good thing too, we need to meet the two best characters in the game still and they hang out over yonder.  Let's pay a visit to our local brainiacs who can probably help us out.

ps I still can never land on that stupid thing on the first try.  This isn't going to change this playthrough.

Looks like we figured out how to power up the MTA bus outta here but we need more batteries.  Time to take on the final 3 bosses of the first act.  After a quick detour to get Float on everyone with like the one time in the game I want Tempting Tango over Sword Dance, I head over to Titan first.

thx friend

Titan has been reduced to a ticklekitten and also to rubble in short order.  I missed you Jitterbug, my old friend from Fiestas past.

Sword Dance:  Good

Bunny That Does Nothing But Look Cute: Bad

Aqua Breath When I Don't Have The HP To Live Through Two Of Them: Very Bad

Purobolos, which must be Greek for "hope you got AoE or stop/silence otherwise lol lol"

Yup.

And with that, the way to teleport off this rock is made clear! (or would be if I could make a gif of it)  We'll be back again soon with Team So Long And Thanks For All The !Fish, I'll streaming Thursday night aww yeah.

Finished Time Mage, beastmaster, Samurai, Chemist extremely quickly.

First job on the next run, White Mage :( . Second job, Beastmaster, which I'd normally be complaining about but it saves me from what would be the disaster of 4 White mages vs. Byblos. White Mage Berserk + Aegir release guarantees a Shinryu kill, but still no guaranteed Omega kill despite playing the GBA version. White mages and Beastmasters are not enough.

And Neo Exdeath down (with some grinding as shown above), finally got the Classic run done! I might consider doing Shinryu and Omega, but I'm honestly more interested in starting a new run, either Chaos or Team No 750 (maybe with natural thrown on top of it, I rather like Natural).

EDIT: I went with a Chaos run in the end and just decided to spoil myself early on my job lineup. I got Knight, Mystic Knight, Ranger, and Chemist. This is twice now I've had Knight, and this is twice now I've had Mystic Knight and Chemist in a run. Not to mention this is literally the same as if I were to do a Normal run. Goddamnit. :V

We're back to Team Old-Timer Saver, and first order of business is to jump off to a whirlpool.

...and stranded on a jungle, and the girls are kidnapped! Oh no!

Luckily, there's Bare-fisted Time Mage to the rescue!

...but, then he too was kidnapped, and taken somewhere else.
That is, Exdeath's Castle.

Galuf to the rescue! And he's riding a Wind Drake, with his granddaughter accompanying him.

After much saving, I just don't get why do they have to sneak past those monsters. Galuf walks past them just fine, and it's not likely that they can sound the alarm and notify Exdeath about intruders... Oh well, better move on.

Goddammit Gilgy!

After blowing Gilgy up, we're got blown up by the next minute or so... and stranded somewhere.

Dancing Monks are super deadly, makes the whole Monk Dancer in FFIV much more sense. Better watch out for dancers who knows martial arts now.

And after much cooking bones and then kupos, we now have become moogles, kupo!

I don't understand this sometimes, a costume can infatuate a certain moogle than the genuine article...

After much telepathy shenanigans and flying, we're back to Bal Castle and now we know Galuf's true name, King Just Galuf!

And so the warriors must find some weed for them to smoke retrieve and that's it for Team Weed Farmers. Until next time!

We rejoin our heroes who have encountered an enemy with a familiar name.

We capture one for now for use later. It's very convenient that we find this guy now and one of the nicer bits things programmed into this game. I could be sent on a ridiculous fetch quest but this guy's right next to where it's needed.

Meanwhile, Monty beats up a furry inside his own home. When will it end?!

Exdeath is impervious to the Garland method of dealing with opponents! GASP!

See?! This guy's alright.

The wizard pops out of the well in town. He takes the Kornago frog and 10k gil for a special equip for our Beastmaster. And then he eats the frog. I think this guy is a lot more trouble than the locals, surely.

While not an impressive accessory statwise, the gourd makes catching enemies a lot easier. 1/4th hp is a huge difference in comparison to 1/8th.

Sounds like a troubling upper respiratory problem. We've got a chemist in case you want some drugs.

The dragon zombies on Drakenvale are a spot of trouble if they hit you with their poison breath move, so it's best to deny them any opportunity to use it.

WHY THANKS, FRIEND! I sure won't exploit this before I head to Exdeath's castle.

Hallo frind wate wre u goin?

WOAH there Chumlee, don't be a jerk.

Yeaaahhhhhhh no.

Here you go, bro.

No worries, buddy. Now to wish I could summon you on command for the rest of the game. ;___;

Although my strategies have never revolved around using this thing, I always collect it to be on the safe side.

YES this is a great day for Beastmaster Faris.

This is basically like the one main equip I'll have on Faris throughout the game. It's the same spirit as the Gold Hairpin: Useful throughout the remainder of the game regardless of equip strength due to how potent it's other property is.

The !Control success rate jumps from 40% to like 75% or 80% I can't remember which. Who cares though? It's fantastic and works against pretty much everything that's not a boss.

Newman: "Vile weed!"

With !Mix now officially a thing, I give it a test on the local floral abomination.

Shadow Flare is only so painful but it's quite a sight.

Unfortunately, this is a boss you just want to just CHOP CHOP through.

Uhm, so....

I ain't diggin' yer cheap dirty tricks, bucko!

I stop being cute and try a couple odds and ends.

Samson's Might or whatever from !Mix does prove effective but it's still only so much.

Cutting down the flowers before they get some attitude only works so well.

Yup enough of your bullcrap, mister. GET SHREKT SHRUB.

Castle Bal has a useful reverse toilet.

Oh I forgot to get this the first time through. It's a good magic defense equip for Galuf the chemistry major. Resistant to poison, too.

Hey! Edgar was so well liked his servants practically gave him stuff. What gives?!

The foul language in this game is really starting to ruffle my feathers if you don't mind my French.

I think the writers just wanted you to do something else first than meet Ghido.

Hoi chummer let's geek some deckers.

Would a backrub help? It's helped me in other games.

Through your boat? Would you be willing to reconsider?

After the overgrown rhododendron incident, I don't have the patience to stomach poor Gilgy as much as I normally do.

Maybe next time, guy.

Such is the fate of Team !Mix This, You Buttface. Join us next time for the continuing adventures of Team We All Live in a Yellow Submarine or Team Ground Control to Major Tom Your Circuit's Dead There's Something Wrong.

Blue Mage's repertoire is complete, with Equip Shield on for Aegis.
Zerker is Two-Handing a Rune Axe and killing everything.
Knight is Two-Handing Brave Blade and killing everything.
I've mostly just been !Catching things with Kornago Gourd if Zerker doesn't OHKO. Nothing interesting in Act 3, though.

There's a question of whether I want to max out everybody's Beastmaster job so I can Breath Wing x3 against Neo Exdeath. Against the four parts, that's 119,988 damage in three moves! But then I lose stuff like two-handed...
