This Mondai-Ji 2.0 so I am obligated to like it. Not as TANOSHII as MDJ sadly enough. But it's still pretty fun, I just wish Sora was less of a dick.

Is it me or Shiro from NGNL and Shiroe from Log Horizon are stereotypical badass geniuses with shiro in their name?

I for one doesn't like the association people are putting up with Mondaiji for this series. In comparison Mondaiji features a repetitive routine stereotypical save-the-day Gary Stu as the MC characterized only by the fights he won and the rest of the MC cast being fillers who are shoved around to stall time when the MC cannot attend to the matter personally. while NGNL puts us up with an actual three dimensional character with obvious gaping weaknesses and flaws, namely, complete vulnerability to being cheated and emotional instability. In fact, the entirety of Volumes 2 through 4 of the novels are about the sibilings finding a way to circumvent the inherent weakness of the human race. At the end of the novel volume 4 it is even implied the male MC's talent isn't unique only to himself
Spoiler:
(even a member of the magic using Elves race was able to think on a similar caliber as Sora)
. To cut it short I really just don't see the association people are drawing considering as I have pointed out Mondaiji is a series characterized by the exaggeration of myths and other legends being smashed to smithereens by completely overpowered ''puny humans out of nowhere'' while NGNL is actually about the struggles of a sibling with niche talents in unique aspects of life of which they apply in another world of a bored God who treat them as toys. But then again this is just episode 2 so I probably should just chill out and let people think it out themselves. :V

Lol what? Both of the series are very similar--hyper-skilled humans get thrown into a magical land and get in TANOSHII adventures. Of course people are gonna compare them :V

I just personally found Mondai-Ji to be the perfect example of a really fun adventure story. I loved the christ out of it and I feel it had slightly better characters than NGNL. Yes, Izayoi was crazy-powerful but he was also REALLY fun and a cool character. Sora, on the other hand, is...kind of a dick. And a pompous dick at that.

I like Sora being a dick more than Izayoi, and at least with Sora he can't muscle his way through anything like Izayoi can, which makes for more interesting events. It's the comparison between 'oh how is Sora gonna plot his way out of this' to 'now, how is Izayoi going to dick around before he inevitably just punches the baddy in the face'. It's like House. 90% screwing around, 10% okay let's actually solve the issue.

I personally have no problem with Mondaiji through the first 3 books, but Amra pretty much nailed it. Again, this serves only as some's preference, but I  generally am sure people get deterred/bored by repetitive stuff happening over and over again. I find it almost amusing that House is brought up, for I actually felt the same vibes from Mondaiji.

I apologize for being condescending about the show which you love, it is probably due to that I also share a mutual interest in Mondaiji at the beginning, and was exceptionally disappointed when they skewed my expectations by going ''oh wow people liked this lets just keep doing this over and over again'' instead of giving characters their proper depth. NGNL so far has shown in the novels that Sora (and Shiro) are persons with outstanding talents and gaping flaws alike, and the emotional complex which stems from the difference results in an interesting story being told. Again, its just personal preference, it is totally okay to just love seeing things explode, heck, even I like watching JoJo just to see things explode.

I really stopped enjoying Mondaiji by the time of the Hamelin arc because I didn't actually feel any urgency. There wasn't any point where I didn't think Izayoi couldn't just have ended it as he wished.

Sora, on the other hand, is...kind of a dick. And a pompous dick at that.

This is the one problem i have found up until now in the anime: since they are constricted by the time-limit of the episodes they cannot show Shiro and especially Sora in their full characterization.....
I'll try to explain for those that only watch the anime.

The siblings works under 3 rules that for them are absolute:

1) They are each other's WORLD. Their very existence is defined by the other one, the most important thing bar none.

2) Together they are utterly INVINCIBLE in any sort of game/challenge. Alone, they are almost unbeatable in their respective skills, and the other will come in to cover eventual weaknesses/cheats or to spring the trap that the first was preparing.

3) They DESPISE the world and humanity at large (although they admit there are exceptions).

This is their basic midset.
Other things you should know:

- they are perfectly ok with having sex with each other as soon as Shiro is of age (they are not blood-related). The appearance of Steph (and at least one other) seems to be pushing Sora into a possible Harem, with Shiro being ambivalent: on one hand, she doesn't want to be pushed to the side in Sora's world; on the other hand, she is ok with him having sex with at least Steph.
(the bath scene where Sora set up a trap to take shots of a nude Steph and Shiro intervene is quite different in the novel: there, Sora openly tells Steph that he will enjoy her nudity later. They are filming it and Shiro will check it later to be sure there isn't any underage nudity so that Sora can watch it)

- Sora isn't so much of a pervert or a deliberate dick like it appear in the anime. For example, when they speak with Steph the first time he initially chastise Shiro for fanning the flames of a stranger's anger by being blunt when they are alone in a different world, then he suddenly realize that it's a perfect situation to MAKE an ally out of Steph. Only then he begin being a dick to provoke her into accepting the bet

- The fact that the siblings have problem communicating with others (especially Sora since he speak more) will become BLATANTLY CLEAR soon enough. They say what they think without caring if they offend someone. Sora at one point will
Spoiler:
say something so blunt and cruel to Steph that she will run away in tears and almost decide to cut them off despite being in love. When they point out to him that he went overboard, he will do his damn best to make it up to her by proving that the cruel thing he said was wrong, all the while denying that he is doing it for her. (Yes, Sora will act TSUNDERE toward Steph! :D )

- When i said that Steph would become the chew toy of the siblings..... I WASN'T JOKING. You better get ready because she will suffer A LOT of humiliations because of both of them, although for the most part is played for laughs.

I think this little gem from the novel will explain it well:

Interrupting Steph who was speaking so eloquently, Sora placed a hand on her forehead.
"......Hm, it doesn't seem like you have a fever. What the- Steph, you just said something really smart!"
For some reason, Sora seemed terribly shocked.
"Is something wrong!? I, I'm sorry for not noticing earlier, I'll take you to a doctor immediately--"
"......Um, aren't you being just a bit far too impolite?"
Seeing Steph's shoulders trembling, Sora cried out.
"No, I mean-- it's you we're talking about, Steph!!"
"Yes it is, what of it!?"
Sora closed his eyes and shook his head.
"No, wait, wait, give me a sec, it can't be......"
He resembled a hardcore physicist who was seeing a real ghost right before his eyes.
Thinking, "This absolutely cannot be."
He swallowed painfully.
He spoke the incredibly hard to accept truth.
"I can't believe it, but......could it be.....Steph, you aren't actually an idiot!?"
Still harboring doubts, Sora cried out the inescapable reality.

The best part? He is partially JUSTIFIED in saying this!  :D

There is a difference between a dick and a moron  :V

They both like to mess with her because she is so easily riled up. Proof of this is that Sora use the same tactics with EVERYONE he meets, but when they don't work (like with the elf girl or Jibril) he stops because it's not interesting.

Jibril's design is so over the top, I love it. It's a shame the anime didn't include the gradient everything, but it's still really bright. The VAs are doing a good job as well.

The premise is pretty cool, the animation is shiny, too bad the only thing this show gives me is the desire to throw the main character into a mincing machine. This guy's approaching Light Yagami levels of insufferability already and that's no mean feat.

I can see where you come from, but as i've said, this is a problem due to the time limit of the anime episodes.
I suggest you to read the Novel, it's only there where you can see Sora's sides that the anime can't show. He is more of a troll than a dick, but in normal situations he is a fairly normal NEET.... it's only when he face a challenge (be it a game or a verbal exchange with someone who is an "opponent") that he turns into an absolute monster...

Hehe, they did a good job :D Although as usual they had to cut short some of the inner reasoning and slow parts it was close to the original.

1) "Do you have flowers growing in your brain?" For some reason i laughed hard..... and the fact that a flower actually sprouted and had a face to boot really cracked me up. (P.S. Am i the only one thinking that Yuuka would be using this kind of insult? :D )

2) The reaction faces of the girls when Sora

I'm not sure how to feel about this show right now. On one hand I like the art and I'm still hopeful that they will entertain good ideas. On the other holy hell this show is stocked with morons.
I... raged so hard about this anime. On the first two episodes I'll just say that if Steph thinks winning a game of rock paper scissors makes someone a genius then I expect I won't find anything in this show even remotely entertaining. Luckily I don't think Steph knows what she's talking about so I'll just move on.

Let me illustrate what I meant in the first paragraph. Sora picks apart Clammy's entire angle, both about how the system to pass on the crown is dumb, how she's exploiting it, and how her attempt to exploit it is dumb. Great, glad our main character picked up on that. However, later in the chess game Sora has a break down after not considering that the veiled girl would cheat again and in a different way. I think he even says something along the lines of not thinking she could do anything other then change the suits on cards. Its like one step forward and two steps back with this guy.

I'll keep watching for a bit but this show is trash. Between all the inconsistencies, bad decisions, and a particularly terrible choice as far as the show itself goes, I could easily see the events becoming straight up unintelligible.

@Espadas: I appreciate you sharing stuff from the books to help fill in some holes. I just want to point out that you shouldn't expect that to make the anime better since... it should probably stand on its own two feet. Also in the list of 3 rules, 2 isn't something you can enforce on yourself and 3 sounds like a horrible rule but I'm sure there's some reason for it.
