That...was a mistake on my part. As I eventually found out, it really is Makai; the copy that THE SITE *mysterious pose* gave out WAS the English patch, and it was an extremely poor patch. HRtP's Makai path is Makai.

But I'm just hoping this doesn't clash with the MS Makai, or takes place elsewhere in it.

Well, you learn something new everyday. I'd rather it take place elsewhere in it as well, at least then we'll know we're dealing with the same one, rather than just having multiple 'Makai's. (I just don't see Gensokyo having multiple Makais it seems weird even for Touhou)

Did a 1CC through Easy. Some thoughts.

Spoiler:

-Stage 5's design violates the #1 rule of shmup design: don't make your fucking bullets blend in with the background. It's all red and blue; the bullets are red and blue; and the enemies decide to spew hundreds of Power and Point items out. This was Easy. I don't want to imagine how confusing the higher difficulties will be.
-The curvy yellow lasers from Shinki and Alice are back, except they don't look like they were drawn in Paint.
-Heartbeat in Stage 6's music is awesome.
-The big yellow Full Power just before the final boss is a cute PC-98 homage.
-The backdrop for the final fight is the same as the one against Shinki, and Makai is mentioned in the dialogue, as already brought up earlier. The final boss also uses Shinki's trademark bullet pattern (wings, restriction lasers and arrow head bullets, and aimed balls). At this point I don't know if it's still a homage to Mystic Square or if ZUN is saying to forget about the PC-98 games.
-Endings are black and white sketches. I thought he had help with the art, so I guess leaving them this way was intentional.
-1CC'ing Easy won't unlock Extra.
-High score entry music reminds me of something out of one of the PC-98 games; a remix, perhaps? I can't put my finger on it.

Currently only 2 arts in Danbooru, with one being a sketch. It wouldn't be long until crappy arts of the new UFO characters surfaces, anyway.
