Someone needs to run Host Mafia where the scum are people trying to disrupt the mod queue.

Ah no mine isn't ready yet.  Hadn't had time for it either.

I can run it after the next game is over, probably, though I might need co-mods.

Well, I guess I'll put Affinity and Edible on hold which puts HW's game at the top of the queue.

yo ill host aus mafia if Affinity and Edible still can't start signups within two weeks, cuz i'll probably be not grounded by then (a bit earlier but I'm not totally sure)

though I dunno if we'll even have 15 people at that time and I don't want to just pull an entire playerlist from sf. but my set-up and role PMs and everything are ready

he also can't host

well sort of

Would someone be willing to Mafia Mentor me? I want to run a game, but I don't have any experience with Mafia, and I don't really want to play it.

I'd let SB run his game, I'm curious to see how SF games look like.

Oarfish could co-mod and spectate with SB filling him in on how the game works in the mod QT or something.

E: Besides it doesn't look like too many people can or feel like playing atm.

Gonna agree with Vhaltz that comodding would be the easiest way to learn provided you follow the game. If all else fails there should be plenty of articles out there for you to read.

We do have a queue for a reason. :ohdear:

Re: RPG Mafia Thread III (Current Game: ???)
« Reply #191 on: October 01, 2013, 01:55:10 PM »
SB put in effort into building up a setup straight away for the players when all three at the top of the queue flaked (well, Hw didn't really flake but you get the idea), so I think it'd be cool if he could host.

But then again I'm not even in the queue and haven't ever been there, so idk if I'd care about someone jumping queue or not.

If PX wants to host, how many players would he need in his setup? We could just have signups, host PX's if it has enough players, or host SB's if there aren't enough for PX's.

There's a separate hold queue for games that have to be run later, and jumping when people are literally waiting years for their chance to host is pretty lame.

The setup is more there for if literally nobody else can host for some reason.

sf games tend to be more role madnessy than games I've seen here mostly (except for a couple of hosts on SF, no vanilla games are more common than games with vanillas). also a lot of them tend to be a bit larger than this just due to us having a large and a small queue (like, bigger than any motk game i've played).

the setup i made kind of isn't though so yeah

Whose game is next, again?

I'm after Edible and have a rough setup ready so it's a compromise between "no cutting the queue" and "play game now pls". I don't mind hosting it before it's really "done" as it wasn't going to have mind-blowing flavor anyway.

Why not try playing before hosting?

I'd recommend reading an old game or co-mod/spectating a game before jumping in headfirst. I learned a hell of a lot when co-modding Chaore's Imp Mafia game because I was forced to read the game to do votecounts and activate day powers.

Where is PX? Does he wanna host?

<_< I swear I can read lists, don't mind me.

Off-topic: I want to, as an exercise, write a program that essentially runs random scenarios given a specific setup and calculates town/scum win % that way (C++ or Java, probably, with each role being a class). It's really complicated so I'm wondering if a simple version has been done before.

I can appreciate some of the concerns voiced about O4rfish hosting, but he's going to have to wait about a year before his turn comes up anyway, so it's not like putting him in the mod queue is gonna ruin anything.

http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=The_EV_Project (maybe you could ask uμ how they came up with these numbers)
http://games-net.de/hosted/tggc/trash/mafiacalc.php (i guess there's also this?)

So then you're calculating town/scum win off of the law of large numbers? You'd also have to decide on stuff like if you want the lynches and nk's to be completely random or if you want town/scum to play to their maximum advantage etc

The goal would be to have a decently accurate simulation (which means factoring in all sorts of interactions and claims and more) without the program being literally as slow as a rock. You'd code "competent" play from Role X and insert it into any setup you want and see what happens. My idea was a tool that gets a list of roles and alignments (provided they exist in the bank - if not you could substitute with similarly powerful roles) and loops (200 times? 400 times? 1000 times?) and returns a result and wham, you've measured your setup. It might not be worth the time, though?

The human element is the most important part of mafia though. My first setup wasn't exactly designed with the idea of the doctor getting quicklynched 6 hours into day 1.

teaspit.jpg

But yeah, no matter what the setup is (except for Vanilla Mafia or something really badly designed *coughpsychoplot*) the human element really decides how everything actually goes.

I don't think it's worth it to try to code a program to crunch numbers because of the effort and that it wouldn't actually be really reliable in the end; plus all the customized roles that get put in... better to just have experienced people review a setup for you.

I mean, the simple versions as linked can be useful, but an actual comprehensive program? Welp. :V

i don't think it's practical, yeah, but it sure would make for an interesting long-term project!

I'm kinda more interested though in the question of what "competent play" for any given role would be, just as a theory question.

IIRC there was something like this on SF written in Python for a very basic setup.
