I borrowed a friend's wired 360 controller and used the XBCD driver. Both the dpad and stick were horrible for Touhou but your mileage may vary.

Laptop keyboard for life.. minimum response time since the keys are so flat heh.

You just blew my mind! You have unlocked Psychopath difficulty.. it's kinda hidden there behind Lunatic, stalking it.

There's so many th dance/trance/techno remixes. Grab a whole set for the game you're playing and stomp away!

I tried playing PCB with my Rock Band drums once, using the four drums for directions and the kick pedal for shooting.  Aside from the obvious handicap of wtfcontroller, there was the lack of a bomb button (unless I taped down z and used the pedal for bombing, which I didn't feel like doing), moving really s-l-o-w because the drums can't be held down for constant movement, and the lack of a focus button (which you'd only use to focus power on bosses, because of the aforementioned sluggish movement). 

I didn't get very far.

Laptop keyboards can be a crapshoot.  On my sister's laptop (I think it was a Sony Vaio), it wouldn't register any more than 2 keys simultaneously pressed, so if I was shooting, I couldn't move diagonally, only in 1 of the 4 basic directions.  On the other hand, I had no problems with my dad's HP laptop.

Regardless, my preference is a good stick.

I stopped using my laptop's keyboard due to fear of breaking the arrows with stepmania. Also, I managed to make my desk tidier(not by much, though, it's still a mess).

I've been using a crappy Logitec 10 dollar USB controller to play Touhou, and it's been working just time. It's pretty beat up, so i'm planning on getting a new one soon.

For the fighting games, Mystical Chain, etc, I use the SFIV Tournament Edition 360 stick (wired), which I managed to get working with Microsoft drivers + Pinnacle. I tried playing Touhou on it, but after playing on a pad so much it's weird to play with an arcade stick.

I did buy a Leadership USB controller AND OH HELL IT'S SO GAY white and transparent with blue lights and shit.
Really good and responsive, though.
Still, I decided Touhou is best played on keyboard.

both keyboard and ps3 controller work at the same time for me when it works... I assume you tried the controls menu in-game? I don't really know how to help sorry.

I use my 360 controller only for SWR, and I have my keys mapped as follows

A: Melee attack
B: Weak Magic
X: Strong Magic
Y: Flight/Graze

LB: Cycle Deck
RB: Activate Spell
