What is your favorite Touhou challenge?

By "challenge", I mean something like no-focus, 90fps, ultra patch, no-bombs, stage perfects, that sort of thing.

The ultra patches. I like them because it increases the regular difficulty of stuff (most of the time) and gives you auto bombs so you don't have to take care of resource management and focus entirely on dodging.

No-Bombs and Perfecting stuff since they're kinda two sides of the same coin. Don't like challenges that mess with my controls though so no no-focus, no-vertical/horizontal or 90FPS things for me unless they're dedictated at certain individual spellcards that basically asks to be treated that way.

Increasing the fps for sure. Just improves the games in every way.

No-focus is also very fun, though only in certain games. (It's great in EoSD.) Another one I like, though it's rather specific, is PoFV without casting spells. In fact, I think that's more fun than playing normally.

Same as Zengeku, except I simply don't do those other challenges at all. Never really considered them that useful for improving my playing skills anyway.

Anyone who has No Freeze as part of their favorite challenge has never played Fairy Wars.

They will quickly learn that ZUN put a lot of spells in there to spit you in your face if you dare to suggest not freezing things. Kinda moronic to do something like that when there's a gold medal system.

I think no-death no-ice GFW would be possible on Easy at least. I tested it on a few routes (A1, A2, and C2 to be precise): the stage 1s were trivial, the stage 2 patterns weren't any worse than Normal/Extra/Hard, and although there were various patterns I couldn't capture no-ice in the stage 3s, I don't think they ever get harder than UFO Lunatic (which also has various patterns I can't capture yet). You'll likely be timing out or nearly timing out most stage 3 patterns when you're only at level 3 power, though.

I can vouch for this being possible on A1. You do end up timing out a lot of patterns and I died a bunch but all my deaths were dumb.

No-bomb. Only like pacifist on certain attacks (especially those with neat timeout phases), not on whole stages. Will try 90fps when I get the new computer. Agreeing with Funen about the other things... I've read folks (or at least Zil) touting the benefits of no-focus (ex: reads/dodges you otherwise wouldn't have made), but I haven't seen that from my limited experience.

Alternately, convincing people to play PoFV.

qft, I'd honestly say I like that more than any real stage theme. Megumi's theme (Could a Mermaid Dream of Being a Human) is tied though, it's no coincidence I downloaded it the same say I first heard it.

Megumi's theme
Probably my favourite theme in all fangames, and maybe even a fierce candidate for my favourite Touhou music.
Second favourite being the extra stage theme for the fact that the bubble fairy part is just super epic

Seven Flowers of the Deep Sea ~ Forgotten Benefit.

It would take a lot for anything to beat this. Though I've been on a massive binge of The Butterfly of Isaac the Traveler lately. How has it taken me this long to realize how good that is.

And yeah, I can definitely echo Footprints of Trieste, that thing is the best Extra stage theme in all of Touhou. Bar none.

Can't forget to also mention Submarine Illusion and The Singing Leader Looks Up to the Sky, two themes that really don't get enough love.

Also, Stage 5 deserves special mention for having the best main-game stage theme and one of the best boss themes in the game, both of which are really saying something.

...I like Marine Benefit music. :V

I like the stage 3 themes quite a bit, although Megumi's theme is way up there too.
