I think it hypnotizes youkai into doing your bidding, with enough I could command an army of youkai into believing in the good goddess."

Either way the faith of the supernatural is much stronger than the faith of the natural, so it would be really nice to convert some ghosts or psychics," she sighs. "Our old faith collecting methods aren't to be working as well. Believe in Kanako or believe I'll exterminate you doesn't work when the potential followers have no idea what I'm saying."

South is Cianwood, which also has a gym, but you'll need to rent a boat to reach it, or find some way across the water. Also south are the whirl islands, though you don't have any particular reason to visit them. A couple blocks away is a harbor; your ferry pass lets you travel from it to Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, Hoenn, Unova, or Orre and back again. You assume Sanae's made good use of her pass already, and consider asking her about her travels.

No badges yet, I haven't focused on them much."

If I can't convert the people, I'm hoping I can at least get some faith from the pokemon. After the world tour, maybe Mt. Pyre or Lavender town. Both are havens for ghosts."
