...Do faeries even do stipends, traditionally? Is the concept a new thing that's been adopted since things became unzipped?
You're uncertain.  The Winter Court is less organized then fairies normally are.  Your pretty sure humans do it though.

Honestly you figure he's just asking for money to go with his title so he can buy off any of his friends who aren't getting fancy words tacked on to the front of their name.  And some more for himself of course.

I say offer him a grant of two golds, and point out he's a faerie, dammit, if he asks for more.

Perhaps some proper bribery might get you some aid.  "Indeed.  It would be sad to see a squire with no equipment.  Rumia, could you please give Squire Grimkald two gold?"

Rumia sneers but moves forward to drop two gold pieces in the goblin's clawed hands.  The little green skinned creature smiles and laughs.  "Smart fairy sir knight.  Knows to earn trust you do.  Grimkald gives in return then."  The little goblin points into the dark bamboo thicket.  "Straight that way leads to the sleeping place.  Be warned, the witch guards it well.  She will not fight a prince-less band, but her slaves thirst for blood still."  The goblins around beging to vanish one by one.  "Squire Grimkald goes to 'quest' now.  But goblins remember.  You no hurt us, we no bother you.  Good evening, knight, lady, knaves and wise one.  Don't end up as frog soup!"

And then the goblins are gone, as quick as they had come in.

"Not sure that was two gold worth friend, but if the thing is telling the truth it's saved us a bit of walking," Wriggle says.

Mystia nods.  "And Rumia's nose knows the way out from here.  It may be best to claim this as a victory for now.  While there may be fair battle deeper in, I feel certain the witch will replace her warriors should we cut them down."

"Though they might not be as strong.  It's hard to say."  Rumia shrugs.  "Either way I know I can lead us back here if needed."

"The sun sets," Daiyousei says quietly.  "Wherever we go, we will go in darkness soon."

Once again you consider your path.

You have solved the Bamboo Forest maze!  You may move from the edge to Eientei at will, though encounters will still happen.

There are two hours until Sunset.  You are one hour from the forest entrance and two hours from Eientei.

Two golds is probably cheaper than one hoss.

"Hm...  What trophies might we take from these foes?"

"If you wish to gain gold to go with your fame I think there are better foes to face.  This forest seems to be ruled more by beasts," Mystia replied.

"And they aren't even edible," Rumia adds mournfully.

You currently possess 99 gold, 9 silver and 9 copper.  And of course all the fairy gold you can conjure up, were you to do such a thing.

You gain gold by looting, selling things you've looted, getting rewarded for slaying dangerous monsters, and if there is no other option an honest days work.

For a knight such as yourself all your money has been made defeating humans who style themselves superior to you and taking their stuff after they lose.

Your companions have suggested there is little chance of getting anything that isn't stolen straight from Eientei.  And given the horrific death that occurred the last time you tried to steal from there you are uncertain if you want to try it with a form that can die permanently.

After a bit of consideration you nod.  "We started this quest to investigate the rumor.  If Eientei holds no answers for us, we shall return to that search.  Rumia, could you lead us out?"

"I'll probably need your power, but yes."  Rumia takes the lead and begins pushing through the brambles again.  Twice she asks you to freeze a thorn bush blocking your way, which takes some time, but still though less then an hour has passed you find yourself once again under the open skies of Gensoukyo.

"T'would be good for you to tend to your beasts," Wriggle says as you all start binding up the thorn cuts.  "They're right ill used from that forest."

"You are right good friend.  Mystia, use your wings to see if you can find our target, but stray not too far.  We'll tend to our mounts."  You move to Snowmane, pull a brush from your pack, and begin brushing and cleaning him  Daiyousei and Rumia turn to their mounts as well.

Mystia leaps into the sky then flies upwards with strong beats of her small wings.  Soon she is circling above, using her keen eyes to seek out signs of life.  You know she is not as good as a hawk might be, but she can still see further then any of you in these lands.

The work is long but simple, and probably does no small good for your mounts.  Wriggle visits you each in turn, starting with Rumia and adds her back to the work.  With her power over animals you cut a good deal of time searching for bad spots.

The sun is setting when you finish and Mystia drops down from the sky.  "I saw no wanderer, but a human knight and his retinue approaches.  His flag flies a gryphon on scarlet.  We should ready ourselves."

"Hm... I do not know that standard.  But I should greet a knight as a knight."  You give your horse a pat, then leap back into the saddle.  Daiyousei and Rumia mount as well, while Mystia and Wriggle move to the flanks.

The knight quickly appears astride his steed, along with five other unmounted humans.  Guards or lackeys it seems.  Two carry torches, and all are armed with sword and crossbow.  As Mystia said the knights shield is a gryphon on a scarlet background.  He has no bow, but a lance is at his side.  You know nothing of this man or his lineage, though that tells you he is a landless knight, the same as yourself.

While he is a human some courtesy must be given.  You ride a little forward.  "Hail, Sir Knight."

The human group moves to face yours and halts.  The knight looks over you and your companions each in turn, and you can tell by his sneer he thinks little of you.  "What is this?  A masquerade?  Why are you dressed like a knight boy?"

Your hand twitches towards your sword, but Daiyousei's hand gently falls on your shoulder.  You force your anger down for now.  "Boy I am not, nor was I ever.  You speak to Cirno of the Winter Court, human."

"Oh, my pardons Sir Fairy."  The man's tone belies his words.  "I did not see your true nature.  It seems that you did not receive the breasts to go with your breastplate."

Your hand falls to your blade as Wriggle and Mystia cry out in anger, but the hand on your shoulder tightens a bit.  "I thought a knight stood before us, not a tavern rat.  How speak you such churlish insults, when a fellow knight stands before you.  Your words bring shame to your standard and your family."  Daiyousei's words ring though the air with such authority even the humans take pause.

The knight flushes red with anger as he feels his followers being swayed against him.  "You would know of taverns wouldn't you fairy 'lady.'  Tell me did this self claimed knight take you in as her 'Dulcinea,' before riding off into the wilds, or did you need a warrior to shelter you from rebuffed 'guests?'"

You snarl in rage at the craven dogs words.  To speak against you is insulting, but to speak against a lady in your presence is a shame that will not stand!

Three thoughts fight for dominance in your mind.  Challenge the dog to single combat.  Curse the churl for his insolence.  Or kill them all.

Your fury turns to action as you form a gauntlet of ice.  "Your words and honor both stand empty false knight!"  You fling the gauntlet at the ground before the man.  "I Cirno of the Winter Court challenge you to single combat, for the honor of the Lady Daiyousei!"

The man flushes red in rage again, and leaps from his horse.  In a single fluid motion he picks up the ice gauntlet.  "I Richard Shieldstroke do accept .  May God give victory to the true, and cast down the blackguard!"  He then crushes the gauntlet in his grasp.  "Now we'll see if fairy blood sparkles."

You move your horse to where the ground seems better suited for charging as the man reclaims his mount.  Your allies follow for now, checking to make sure the field is clean.  "Why'd you have to take all the fun for yourself Cirno.  I wanted to eat one." Rumia mutters as she helps check your saddle strap.

"This is how things are settled between knights," you reply.  "But stand watch over his fellows.  I place little trust in his word."

"I admit I hope they try something," Mystia says fingering her axe.  "Still it should be a good tale.  Make it a worthy epic."

"Sorry dear friend, but I hope to make it short," you reply as you set your shield.

Daiyousei is the last to step away, and her glance is slightly stern.  "You know I dislike it when you declare fights in my name," she says.

You shake your head.  "And you know this is the path of a knight.  And of a friend."  She sighs in response.  But you feel no regret as she takes bow from her hair and ties it to your arm as a pennant of her favor.  She may object to the rules of this new land, but you know she is glad for your strength.

You turn to your foe and lower your lance.  You are ready.  His attendants step away and he lowers his lance as well.  There is a brief moment as you both stand ready.  Then you spur your mount and charge.

Snowmane surges forward, as eager for the fray as you are.  The rumbling charge jostles your lance and shield, but you force yourself to try to keep them steady, to aim for your foes chest, while blocking his own lance.  There is a terrible clash and you are rocked backwards by the impact.  There's a cracking sound and a screech of peeling metal.  Still, your shield turned so you think you have won the pass.  You recover from your charge and turn to see what damage your foe suffered.  You smile as you see your opponent's shield rended by your ice lance.  A solid hit will break it.

You reform your ice lance and prepare to charge again.  Your power shocks Richard, but you let him recover before starting your next charge.  This time neither of you strike true, and you prepare for a third pass.

This time there is a great crash of metal and ice and you find yourself flung from your mount.  You roll with the fall, keeping both sword and shield and rise to your feet.  You see your foe standing as well, and you rush forward to meet him.  He drunkenly swings at you, but you duck the cut and retaliate with a slash that slams into his armor and sends him stumbling back.  You try to capitalize on his weakness but he retreats quickly enough to regain his guard.

As you move to finish the fight the knight roars.  "What are you doing fools?!  Shoot them!"

Your heart flutters as a bowstring twangs, but it is not one of your friends but an enemy that falls.  The guard next to the victim screams in fright at the sudden assault.  Rumia must have been waiting for this moment from the beginning.  You silently bless the darkness youkai for being so keen to the nature of cowards.  "Treachery my friends!"  You call out.  "Defend yourselves!"

You are fighting 1 wounded knight and 4 human guards.  One human guard is scared.
Cirno has suffered 1 HP damage.

You can throw ice cubes into the air one by one and have them fall down, but you aren't getting a hailstorm.  Your powers are vastly changed due to the shift.

As a warning Mystia's blindness effects everyone except her.  This is still fair to the terms of the duel as you are equally handicapped, but it's annoying.

Of course you can ignore the dueling rules since they've been broken, but a strong knight can triumph with honor even when betrayed.
