Aya for her fast bullets.  Sure it's mostly streaming, but it's still pretty enjoyable for me, and 90FPS match mode against her is great fun even if it's a surefire way to die.

Which game has your favorite plot/storytelling?

By that I mean content and delivery, respectively.  Feel free to emphasize other aspects, like setting and backstory... characters too, as long as it's about their in-game interactions and not their series-wide personalities, fluffiness, and so on.  If it's just a certain part of a game that makes it especially good, that's perfectly fine as well.

For the confused, these are comprised of the things that you clicked through and inadvertently read some of before you learned to ctrl.

UFO probably has my favorite storyline. Byakuren has my favorite backstory as well, along with Mokou.

I really like the Story if Eastern Wonderland for some reason. The characters are all very interesting to me, and it has a certain feel to it that the other games don't have. More serious maybe, or just oldschool. There's something about it that makes me like it. Other than that I'd go with EoSD, for more or less similar reasons. The characters feel less random and more unified. I also like how the story gets itself across more easily. All of these weird backstories for some of the others actually kind of bother me. I feel like I don't get to know the characters just by playing the game.

UFO has my favorite plot and cast of characters, but Great Fairy Wars has some of the best lines.  It's diffidently between those two.

PCB and IN by far, storyline-wise. TD's conversations, especially Seiga and Yoshika's on Reimu, are adorable. I think conversations in the other games feel pretty bland.

The only story that I remember in Touhou is SanaeBs UFO Extra story. On the occasion i decide to play that stage, i still stop to read the dialogue there because its hilarious. For a main game, I prefer SA because its about a nuclear loli who's about to go ballistic and because the MarisaA path is funny because they talk about it like an old-school RPG.

I never seriously bothered about storylines behind the games.  Moreover, i find plots of most touhou games rather silly Though, i like how it's done in SA with pretty straightforward mystery, different goals of youkais and cool characters and conversations overall.

I like UFO's plot in general but MarisaA's story in SA has some pretty awesome dialogue in my opinion.
Honorable mention goes to the dialogue in stage 4 of IN while playing as Magic Team: "Now, b***h, get out of the way!"

I also don't bother too much with the stories, since I always skip the dialogue while playing. The most I'll do with that is read the translations on the wiki. I'd have to say IN for this question, since I find the dialogue from that game to be the most memorable (Netherworld Team especially).

Definitely UFO.  I find the Youkai's side of the story rather sad, actually.  The entire game seems like you're playing as the bad guys trying to stop good from winning because of how kind-hearted Byakuren is compared to the heroines (Marisa, I'm looking at you).  It's also touching that all of the stage bosses feel such loyalty and duty for Byakuren.  I can't say that's the case with most of the other games, Ten Desires aside.  PCB runs a close second, though.  The musical score combined with the visuals and dialogue ("Remembering the melancholy of human existence... Even ghosts stray from the path of righteousness." is pure poetry) leaves such a strong impression after the game.

I know, in fact the wiki has a different translation. But It's a pretty awesome line regardless of that in my opinion.

I wouldn't throw the other early windows games under the bus just because one of them may have had translation issues.  Granted, I can't read Japanese, but I've compared parts of the EoSD translations (wiki and patch), and the divergences in the patch that I noticed seemed to have been a tradeoff in conveying the essence of the wordplay/humor over retaining complete literal accuracy.

My point there wasn't to argue that one translation mindset is superior to another; it was to point out that newer doesn't always mean better.  Correlation perhaps and at times, but not causation.


Anyway.

Of the ones I've played and read (2,6-12.3), PoFV has my favorite story.  It has a good amount of the typical Touhou lightheartedness/stupidity, but it also has conversations that compel (at least some of) the characters to rethink their actions/lifestyles.  And while the plot of the game itself is inconsequential to the Touhou universe, there're serious undercurrents regarding both the consequences of humanity's actions as a whole and the impact individuals have on themselves and others through their mindsets and in how they lead their lives.  While I didn't fully agree with parts of it, I found the ethical and metaphysical aspects of the writing to be very satisfying overall, so PoFV's story hits a little closer to home and is more meaningful to me than that of the other games in the series.

Probably Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Komachi's route. I also like a lot of the Immaterial and Missing Power story lines. The Hisoutensoku story lines are good for some laughs.

Hmm. I think it's been long enough. Just like the first incarnation, all the questions eventually dry up, and creativity can only take you so far. So now, I ask my final question of the thread:

What is your favorite staff roll theme?

ZUN is quite amazing at what he does. With few exceptions, his credits themes are both thematic and beautiful. As this thread draws to a close, which theme do you think fits the closing of their respective game the most?

This is a very hard one for me to choose, because with one exception I like all the staff roll themes. If I had to pick only one, it would be...Oriental Memory of Foregathering Dream (IaMP). Such an amazing piece. Honorable mentions to Eastern Dream, Eternal Steam Engine, Sky Dream, and Maple Dream. Oh, and if unused themes count, then Crescent Dream. Man that's a good one.

The UFO one. Probably because its usually accompanied by a surge of adrenaline having just finished the game which isn't really achieved in the other games. I do like the MoF and the TD ones too. Don't remember the rest much.
