Connichi 2011 - A fish's first con report - Completed!
« on: September 19, 2011, 06:09:12 AM »
So back in March I first learned about the con- and cosplay-scene here in Germany. Since then I had vowed to visit the next big con within reach here, and that happened over the last weekend.
I went through half of Germany to get to the Connichi 2011, the biggest German con at this point, trusty camera at hand and ready for the fun. And fun it was. I certainly did learn a few things I have to take care of in advance next time (like getting a place to store my backpack, my shoulders still hurt like hell), but I still had a great time.
The definite best part was the big Touhou-photoshoot on Sunday, because Touhou-people are just awesome.
Of course, I took a ton of photos, and I'm going to put them into this thread here over the next days. Overall I took about 600 pictures I'll have to sort through, so it will take some time.
For now, have a few pics as a preview for what is to come later~

Kamina gets all the girls. And their clones. Because he's just that manly.

Odin Sphere cosplay. I love that game *_*

Kaiji! I did a small photoshoot with him, since I was one of the few people to know the series and recognize him at once.

Yes, that is a mustache-Reimu-mask with a Yukari hat on an Utsuho arm cannon, why do you ask?

Pon Pon Pata Pon~

Okami-photoshoot. The girl on the left cosplayed as Cirno when I first met her in March, and is basically the one that pointed me in the right direction to get into the scene here in Germany.

Hat swap. Marisa was one of the two crossplayers at the Touhou-photoshoot, the other being Yukari. Utsuho doesn't count because it was a male-version of the costume in the first place. And yes, that's Tokiko in the background.

Not only did I meet a rare Kaiji, he actually showed up again. Who'd have thought that he was also a Touhou-fan! Note the zawa-zawa-bag.

Yamame on the spidernet. We invaded a playground for this shot.

Touhou on the playground!

And that's it for the preview. The rest will come in time, please wait warmly~

We did single/pair shots of almost all the Touhou-cosplays, so there will be more Kaguya/Keine pics later indeed :3

I love how perfect that photo of Yamame on the spider net is. How hard was it for her to balance?

That one was actually an easy one for her, you can barely see it but she's leaning against one of the ropes with her legs and those provided good balance. But there'll be another shot later... well, you'll see in time~

And here we are, the first big bunch of pics. Note that you can click each pic to get to an even bigger version, because imgur is awesome and has large clickable thumbnails that are at most 640x480 in size.

I decided to mix the pictures up a bit instead of going chronologically. Because I'm sure most people here are interested in Touhou, all the pictures from the Touhou-photoshoot are here already, even though it was on Sunday afternoon. I put in the Kaiji-shoot as well, and the one T&B picture I took.

So here we go~

For all the Tiger & Bunny fans, have a Kotetsu. What's so special about this one? Well, most of all the fact that he's male. I saw a number of Kotetsus around the con, and all were girls. I asked this Kotetsu about it, and he told me he knew of exactly one other male cosplayer doing Kotetsu. There were also a number of Barnabys, a Kaede, Origami Cyclone, Sky High and his love interest from a certain episode, Dragon Kid and two characters in their hero outfit: Blue Rose and Fire Emblem. Don't have any pictures of those though.

This was the first picture of spontaneous Kaiji-mini-photoshoot. He was really surprised when I recognized him, saying that usually only Japanese people knew about Kaiji. Apparently he's one of two Kaiji-cosplayers in Germany, and he's done season one Kaiji before, with the RPS cards. He also told me that he gets a lot of praise from Japanese people for his Kaiji, because he has the fitting face, especially the nose. Apparently there's a lot of Japanese Kaiji-cosplay done by girls, and even if the costume is good, they just don't look right with their cute faces.

The emblem on Kaiji's jacket is actually a real flight-divisions emblem that he altered to be exactly like it's shown in the series.

Reenacting a scene from the opening where Kaiji flees from some goons.

He even brought his own sound effects! Zawa zawa~

Another scene from the opening. Kaiji had the screenshots printed out on paper so I could direct him how exactly he has to pose and take the picture from the right position.

The zawa-bag. He told me that he had designed the zawas on the PC and then went to have them printed on the bag in a store, so this bag is a unique piece!

Before we get to the large photoshoot from Sunday, two pictures from when I stumbled across the Touhou-people on Saturday.

Proof that a mustache makes you irresistable, even if you are an arm cannon with a Yukari hat and a mask of mustache-Reimu strapped to it.
Unfortunately I don't have more pictures of Reisen, since I missed the first Touhou-photoshoot on Saturday, which would also have had Miko and Futo. I'll link to pictures from that shoot when I see them uploaded though, I'm rather curious myself.
The girl cosplaying Reisen was around on Sunday as well, but as Byakuren then.

Combining Flandre and Yukari. Congratulations, you just doomed the universe.

The shoot on Sunday started slightly chaotic. The original organizer didn't show up at all, and Byakuren had to take over the lead. There were also less people than originally expected, though the group was still quite big. We started off with some group shots.

Then we moved on to the park to take more pictures. Unfortunately the area was pretty crowded despite the grass being wet from the rain, and the cloudy sky made lighting absolutely unpredictable everywhere. We found a good spot though.

First up were Reimu and Yukari. Yukari was actually being cosplayed by a guy, and he did it pretty well.

Meanwhile Patchy was abused by her boyfriend Marisa

Next up for pictures was Yamame. Byakuren, who was taking pictures as well and directed things, had the idea of having Yamame climb on the wall like a proper spider. This allowed for some really nice shots, and we managed not to fall off the wall too \o/

We interrupt the program for more PatchyMari shenanigans. Hat swap has occurred, be scared. Unfortunately we didn't get around to taking more pics of those two together, since Patchy was freezing a lot and changed out of her cosplay a bit later.

Here we have Tokiko, a character I really didn't expect to appear. She didn't seem to be too used to having her pictures taken yet, but she managed well.

Utsuho in the meantime figured out that his third leg made for a pretty nice thing to lean on and think, probably about how to try and conquer Gensokyo next time.

While Byakuren and I were taking pictures of Tokiko, of course the rest of the group wasn't just sitting around. Other photographers arrived and took pictures with them in the meantime. I managed to snap two shots of Suika and Reimu together, though the lighting went really bad for those.

Don't touch my sake!

Suika, you really should think about your drinking habits!

Next candidate for pictures was Suwako, and we had her climb on the wall as well.

I think she's in love with her hat XD
We also tried to get some hopping pictures of her, but it was impossible to get non-blurry shots with the light we had. Byakuren took some videos of Suwako's hopping instead that she wants to turn into an animated gif later.

Since he was standing right next to me when we finished Suwako's pictures, I grabbed Utsuho next. He was one of the few people I knew from back in March, where he had cosplayed Youki.

Don't point that thing at me! There was actually a light inside the cannon that he could activate via a switch. Later he had the idea of putting a mini-camera in there someday, so he could take pictures of the people taking pictures of him.

The cannon was pretty heavy, so he had to support it or rest it on the ground often.

Preparing for a rocket jump!

The second Marisa and Reimu that were at the group shot before came back at this point and had their pictures taken. They look really nice together *_*

Sharing a broom, the true sign of friendship. What do you mean, Reimu can fly on her own?

The scarf was borrowed from Yamame for this shot.

Our second Patchouli amongst the falling leaves. Someone went and gathered a handful of leaves to throw for this shot, and though I don't like the shadow that the flash caused on her face, it still turned out rather well.

Now it was time for Byakuren to pose for the photos. The wig of her costume was really well done in regards to the gradient hair.

If you can't trust this girl to bring peace to humans and youkai, who can you trust? *_*
Despite how calm she looks in the pictures, Byakuren was a really hyper and energetic girl, and a lot of fun to be around, but more about that later.

Keine and Kaguya were chosen for the next pictures.

When we had Kaguya sit down to show off her dress some more, I took the chance to take closeups of both of them.

I really like this picture, because it was actually more of a snapshot, but their expressions look really nice.

Before we finished, I decided we need some fandom-Kaguya as well, and handed her my PSP, which Kaguya almost wanted to keep after the picture was taken. Sorry princess, but I still need that!

The males of the group posing together

After that we were done in the park and moved on to our next goal: The playground! Yamame had an idea for some pictures she wanted, and this was the place to go for them.

We started off with Yamame posing on the spidernet.

I love this shot. It's probably my favourite of the whole bunch I took. The whole position, the lighting, it all worked for this shot.

When Byakuren climbed up into the net to take closeups, that in itself was worth a picture as well.

Of course I climbed up as well. And then I dropped the camera by accident. Apparently though it's made of Nintendium, because it didn't even have a scratch nor did it malfunction in any way, though Byakuren helped by trying to catch it and at least managing to slow the fall a bit.

One after another, the rest of the group climbed into the net. First Utsuho, of course taking the top position fitting for a bird.

Then Marisa

And finally Yukari joined as well.

Master Spark? That's so PC98. I hope you're ready for nuclear-equipped Marisa.

After the climbing, Utsuho decided it was time to hit the swings.

Unyuuuuuu~

Gotta love Byakuren in the background here. She ran over to the second swing as soon as it became free.

Those things aren't as easy to get onto as they look. But Stage 6 bosses help each other out.

Meanwhile Marisa's swing-attempt ended in a lost hat.

What's up? Just swinging by to tell you about my awesome faith. Wanna join the temple?

And for the final shots, this had been the main reason Yamame wanted to go to the playground. So she could find a place to hang down from!

And this concludes the Touhou-photoshoot. Next up will be all the other cosplays I took pictures of during the two days~

Due to the overcast sky and bad lighting in general I had to work with exposure times in between 1/40 - 1/60 of a second, which is the maximum I can do while keeping the camera stable without a tripod. So when I did do serial pictures, which I actually rarely did during the single shots, only for the Yukari/Reimu ones at some point, I got about six or seven shots at a time.

On the playground though, at the swings, that's exactly 86 pictures out of which there are about 6 or 7 usable ones. And even then they are often somewhat blurry due to having to go with the comparatively long exposure times. I really would love to test shots like this again on a clear sunny day where I can work with 1/250 second times, I imagine the difference would be gigantic.

For the incredibly bright, unblocked sunlight I had at NDK last week, I had to change my shutter speed to 1/4000 of a second just so the light reflecting off of Yukari's sleeves wouldn't be absolutely blinding.

Of these, I really love the background of the ropes on the playground, but I also really love the photos you took under the tree. The green is such a good background. This goes for the playground photos, too, so the photo you like most is also the photo I like most. Dat colour balance!

Man, these are really, really nice. Byakuren is of course wonderful, but it's Kaiji that really surprised me. I was just going to remark that dude even has the nose for the role. How is this show only popular in Japan?

Also, incredibly pleased with Kaguya. The shot of her and Keine sitting, both of them shyly looking away from each other - just perfect.

What an awesome time you must have had. Did you make any pals? Going to be in touch with anyone?

Haha yeah, he even said that himself. That you gotta have the guts to say "Okay, I got a big nose, let's find a cosplay that works with it!". And that's exactly what he did, and it's awesome.

Quote
The shot of her and Keine sitting, both of them shyly looking away from each other - just perfect.
Yeah, this one turned out wonderful. I don't think the whole pose was intended, they were just turning their heads for some random reason, but the outcome... <3

Quote
Did you make any pals? Going to be in touch with anyone?
I'm gonna stay in touch through the german online community where I learned about the photoshoots in the first place, yeah. Will be a while before I see most of them again, since most from that group live in west Germany, but it will happen. Some people I met do live here in the city as well though, and I've already met up irl with one of the girls I met back in March, plus I've applied to be a helper at a con taking place here early next year. So yeah, definitely getting into the scene and going to try and join the fun wherever possible :3

I must ask (if it hasn't been already): Did you go as anybody?
Nope. I'm intending to cosplay at some point, but I'll ask someone for help when doing so, because as is I'm not trusting myself to pull off a costume. I did originally plan to make a Yoshika-handpuppet to take along at least, but I couldn't get her head done in time, though her body is finished.

Also, glad you guys like the pics. I did put them through some post-processing mostly correcting the brightness and upping the colors a little, basic stuff, as well as cropping obviously. It's amazing how much that easy stuff already does to make a picture look better O__O

Edit: Got a message from the Kaiji, he asked for permission to upload my pics on two other cosplay sites, one of which Japanese, saying people there will love it. Apparently his older Kaiji-pictures already got more views than a lot of really well made costumes with hard to make weapons and stuff. As if  I would say no to such a request!

And here we go, the second and final batch of pictures, documenting my days on the Connichi!
Have fun~

The Connichi takes place right in the middle of the city of Kassel, so when I arrived the first thing I did was scout around the place,  overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that was already going on despite it being barely past 9am.

Let's start off with something for the Basara-fans: Masamune Date!

Then I headed into a park that was part of the con-area and was the most popular spot for taking pictures, for obvious reasons.

Sailor Moon, whichever-season-version! Those wings were well done.

I have no idea what character this is, but she looks cool.

Very well done Digimon cosplay. This one was very popular with photographers for obvious reasons.

A maid offering the great Johann Wolfgang von Goethe some tea. He does not seem interested though.

After finishing a first round, I came across Sailor Moon again, this time posing together with the moon princess.

The Pokemon-fans will surely be able to tell which two those are. If those costumes were home-made, they were done extremely well.

Scratch from Ice Age and some girl I don't know. Those two had a lot of pictures taken as well, though Scratch's eyes looked kinda creepy.

Fye from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.

No idea about the characters, but beautiful dresses nontheless.

Pyramid Head and a scary nurse from the Silent Hill series.

Madoka! There were a small number of Madokas around, I saw a handful of Homuras and at least one Sayaka and Mami as well.

This guy practically spent the whole day standing around completely motionless, switching to a different place every few hours.

Another one for "Guess the cosplay", because I have no idea.

I'm not sure about what those two represent either. If I had to guess I'd say WoW, but I'm not sure.

One of the photographers said that she looked exactly like one of the British queens as a young woman.

Hayate from Lyrical Nanoha.

That weapon was freaking huge.

I have a feeling I know this one, but I can't figure it out. If someone knows, feel free to post it.

Kamina-sama! Yokos! Nia~ ! There was at least one other Kamina around, but he didn't have the cape or the glasses. Blasphemy!

More Digimon, and well done ones.

Again, no idea about the series and characters. The girl on the left had the butler-behavior down perfectly though. When I saw her and the girl on the right taking a break at some point and sitting down, the butler-girl stood by and motioned her companion to sit down with an elegant movement, it was a wonderful sight.

Dead Master and Black Rock Shooter

A Blazblue cosplay-group. There were quite a number of Blazblue cosplayers around at the con.

Again no idea about the character, but it looks nice.

Odin Sphere cosplay, showing four of the five main characters from the game. I had spotted these before, but Gwendolyn had been working on her costume for some time, and I checked back several times to see if she was done.

Three more I don't know.

It's the Beatles! And at least two of those are girls, so you are looking at Beatles-crossplay! That's a word one does not get to use often.

Completing another round I passed the Odin Sphere group again, only to see it had grown in size quite a bit. There was a Cornelius in Pooka-form around, that I didn't get to take a picture of. I did however get to capture this Maresa/Mercedes (whichever you prefer), and more Gwendolyns. Especially liking the two on the left, since they have the skirt-wings and all <3

Of course there were several Star Wars cosplayers around as well.

Rapunzel from Tangled, with her trusty pan.

Someone tell me what character this is, because it looks absolutely awesome.

Only got a snapshot while passing by, but the Dr.Who fans should recognize this. I'm pretty sure that cosplayer traumatized several children that day.

This character is the highest angel from Angel Sanctuary, and goddamn look at those giant wings! You could see this guy from practically every point in the park with those things. Apparently he's kinda infamous in the cosplay-scene, because the character is supposed to be the most beautiful being in existence, and some say that this simply shouldn't be done by a middle aged guy. Most people love his cosplay though.

Pon Pon PataPon! Technically an easy cosplay to do, but that doesn't make it any less cool.

The Edelweiss from Valkyria Chronicles and its soldiers, amongst them a Welkin and an Alicia! I had seen this tank being built up all throughout the morning already, and finally it was done. When they had assembled it, this group had the Valkyria Chronicles BGM playing aloud from their car, creating an awesome atmosphere. They also had a plushie of the winged pig Hans (iirc), that is kind of a mascot character in the game.

Avatars from the movie Summer Wars. Another thing I wouldn't have expected to see, and they pulled it off well. I can only recomment this movie btw.

It took me a while to figure out what kind of shoot I walked into here, but apparently it was a Clamp-photoshoot. Lots of nice cosplays in there.

At this point I joined the Okami-photoshoot, since I absolutely love that game, plus there was a girl I know in the group. Most of the characters are different gods from the game, which are originally all animals. In this picture we also have the fireworks master with them.
Amusing side-info: The mother of one of the girls in the group was also with us, and she was cosplaying as Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter. The looks of Harry Potter cosplayers when they recognized her, especially ones doing Gryffindor characters, were priceless.

We went into the park to take some more group shots, and while the fireworks master left, Ammy and Ammy joined. That is, human form Amaterasu, and... real Amaterasu.

Best Amaterasu cosplay ever. No human can even dream of matching this.

Another Summer Wars cosplayer, this time with the flag from the movie.

Parade of the Gods

And a last group shot.

This ended the Saturday, and Sunday was spent with the Touhou-group I posted before.
However, it didn't end there.
The real hilarity began after the Touhou-meeting ended.

It was early afternoon, and activity was beginning to decline rapidly all around. It had also started raining. We still had several hours to spare, so I teamed up with Byakuren and Utsuho, and we seeked shelter from the rain.
When it finally stopped raining, Byakuren was massively bored and decided she needed something to do.
That's when she came up with something she had planned to do anyway. You see, Byakuren was a massive Pokemon-fan, and where others collect Pokemon in the games, she vowed to collect Pokemon cosplay all around.

Thus began Byakuren's Pokemon hunt.

We searched through the whole con-area, looking for scattered Pokemon cosplayers. Everytime we found one, Byakuren would run over to them squealing happily and ask them for a picture in such a cute way that noone would ever have dared to deny her request.
We managed to catch a number of Pokemon, amongst them this:

You may d'awwwwww now.

We also came across this. I have again no idea what it is from, but it's a robot with a guitar, glowing eyes and Kamina-glasses. How is that now awesome?

Soon though, we had gotten all the Pokemon around the area (Utsuho had been playing Pokemon music on his phone all the time while we did this, to up the hilarity).
Byakuren was getting bored again, and we just "trolled around the park", as Utsuho called it, with this music playing aloud from Utsuho's phone.

After a while, Byakuren suddenly had another idea.
"I'm going  to photograph photographers now, and I'm starting with you!". So with that I had my picture taken.
Then a group with two  photographers came passing by, and sure enough, Byakuren ran over to them and cheerfully explained that she's now taking pictures of photographers instead of cosplayers, and asked the two for a picture, which they agreed to do. How could one say no to this girl.
We did this for a while and she caught a number of photographers all around the park, and then this happened:

This is a picture of the guy on the left taking a picture of Byakuren who is taking a picture of the group on the left who are taking a picture of the cosplayer with them. Photo-chain!
That "guy on the left", btw? That's the Yukari from the Touhou-pictures!

Because chain-photography wasn't silly enough, we upped it with circle-photography! There were enough cameras for everyone on the scene, so we stood in a circle and everyone took pictures of everyone.

And with that last bout of insanity, the Connichi ended.

It was a hell lot of fun, if a bit tiring what with all the walking around all the time. Definitely worth it, and I'm most likely going to go there again next year,if only to meet everyone from the Touhou-group again.
I'm also extremely grateful to the friend who gave me his "old" camera (which was one of the best ones of 2009) when he got a newer one, because it allowed me to take all those wonderful pictures despite the not really ideal weather conditions.

Hope you enjoyed this show, and feel free to tell me about who all those cosplays I didn't recognize are!

I have no idea what character this is, but she looks cool.
I may be wrong, but I think that is a side character who stars in a few of the very last episodes from Dragon Ball (without a Z, mind you), protecting hell's oven. Forgot the name though...

I'm not sure about what those two represent either. If I had to guess I'd say WoW, but I'm not sure.
Exactly. Illidan and... a Death Knight which may or may not be supposed to be Arthas.

We also came across this. I have again no idea what it is from, but it's a robot with a guitar, glowing eyes and Kamina-glasses. How is that now awesome?
Well, I don't know who, but he does have a Transformers symbol on his chest, soo...

Other than that, plenty nice stuff in there. I am particularly amazed by all the feathery wings, and I loved that most accurate Ameterasu cosplay ever.  :3

Very well done Digimon cosplay. This one was very popular with photographers for obvious reasons.
I'm sorry Ruro, but this one trumped the one you managed to fi-

More Digimon, and well done ones.
PLEASE TELL ME THESE TWO BROKE INTO A CATFIGHT :*

Again, no idea about the series and characters. The girl on the left had the butler-behavior down perfectly though. When I saw her and the girl on the right taking a break at some point and sitting down, the butler-girl stood by and motioned her companion to sit down with an elegant movement, it was a wonderful sight.
Pretty sure that the characters are from Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji. It gets quite a number of cosplayers in my area.

Someone tell me what character this is, because it looks absolutely awesome.
The character's name is Grell, from the series mentioned above.

We also came across this. I have again no idea what it is from, but it's a robot with a guitar, glowing eyes and Kamina-glasses. How is that now awesome?
That would be Soundwave, the Transformers Animated incarnation in particular (and holy crap wow that magnificent accuracy  :o)

Glad you had fun, Sakana, and these pics turned out really, really well.

The interesting-looking characters are from Kuroshitsuji? Well, I guess I just got a reason to at least check out what that series is about then.

Zengar: That Digimon there (Beelzemon, I don't know if the names are different in the English version?) is currently trending as the most popular cosplay in the German community, and for a reason.
Also no catfights, at least not while I was around :V

Sailor Moon, whichever-season-version! Those wings were well done.

After finishing a first round, I came across Sailor Moon again, this time posing together with the moon princess.
To the first two: Sailor Moon in the Eternal fuku from Sailor Stars (season 5). I hate the eternal fuku as a rule, but she actually pulled it off well. :o

The third looks like Eternal Sailor Moon with Neo-Queen Serenity.

Love the Angewomon vs LadyDevimon fight. The CLAMP photoshoot also looks like a lot of fun.

And goddamn Byakuren looks adorable when she's trying to catch 'em all. :*

I saw it on LAversion, that kept all the original names, so moot point. :V
Also to be nitpicky it has wings, so it'd be Beelzemon Blast Mode.
