I think it would have helped if he released the full version later. I dunno, the demo felt comparatively complete, and the new stuff feels kinda... rushed.

On a technical level, yeah - a lot of the stuff is pretty basic.

But... at the same time it's refined about it, and when it's not being creative it's still being fun to play.  I definitely noticed myself moving and dodging spells in a lot of different ways this time instead of the same streaming/micrododging etc.

After playing through the last stage myself, it appears that the background isn't watery like I originally thought when I first saw it on the stream. 
Spoiler:
The only water-related theme that I can find is Futo's boat.  If Reimu's conversation with Mamizou means anything, then maybe the next game will be water-themed.
  Not that I'm desperate to have water-themed Touhou game, mind you...

Noticed a small error

On the Stage 6 Spellcard 7, the position of the boss is near the center, but in Spell Practice she is close to the top of the screen.

The card would actually be much harder with her in the center yes? Because there would be less space to run about.

Don't mind me, I'm pretty strict when it comes to these things. Then again, a couple of them are relatively major, so I think I have a reason to complain about them. It's not like they ruin the game as a whole though. I can still set up a scoring path for the main game, for instance.

It seems to me that some comments here are unnecessarily harsh to the game, when the game impressed me a lot.

I mean, not every spellcard in the game has to have sophisticated programming behind it to make it great, right? Spellcard is more about the theme and pattern afterall.
Also, just because a spell is made just out of bullets with simple motion doesn't mean it's easy to make. There's loads of parameters that one can change to have the spell behave so differently that it takes a whole different approach to capture it. Then there's the difficulty in balancing the difficulty of the spell.

Gimmicks are plentiful throughout the game so I don't see how the spells are not memorable. Stage 5's spells were pretty, midboss's spell was so cool.
Then, ZUN has made thousands of spellcards probably throughout these years, so it's seems pretty unfair to pick whatever spell has similarity with old ones and call it unoriginal, when it's just similar concepts with different presentation. (and I think presentation is very important too,

Stage 5 boss's rain spell would be quite bland if it didn't have the whole boat riding theme wouldn't it?
)
It's quite impossible to expect ZUN to come up with like 50 new danmaku concepts for a game every year.
It's like calling Nue a Flan copycat when they are totally different characters with vast difference in personality and background.

I really liked

the details that were put into the spellcards where Yoshika has to be revived in stage 4, like being inserted life or something with Seiga's curve stream thingy in the first spellcard, Seiga floating on top of Yoshika as Yoshika floats upward in the 2nd card, etc)

Music-wise, I don't really like the style of the boss themes ZUN had, it's more boss-like, but makes it less awesome to listen outside of the game. :P The stage themes are really amazing, I can't stop listening to stage 4 theme's intro. XD

ZUN's putting more thought into the plot of the games isn't he? The character profiles this time are so unusually long and detailed O_O. The plot had me so confused too D: . I still can't comprehend what happened with the TD crew in the past after reading the character profiles...

and ZUN probably missed bugs because he only had one year since GFW to produce TD? As seen from the past, ZUN will release a patch very soon to fix major bugs anyways.

So I made a replay of stage 4, but it causes the game to crash when it finishes. Anyone else get something like this?
I knew about the desync problems, but I've never had a replay crash on me before.

I don't think it's that much less detailed than something like Kaguya's and Mokou's back-story could be.

Personally, it sounds like ZUN's been outright busy this whole year. I mean he mentioned someone about moving, not to mention the ground doing plenty of that. I haven't played it very much yet, but I'm a bit more willing with the slack this year considering.

Normal 1cc.

Thoughts:
This game requires the most memorization to date - whereas in other games you needed to memorize where enemies came in to kill them before they shot, but you could deal with not doing so, this game requires you to memorize where enemies spawn to get trance to get resources, which you cannot get away with ignoring. 
Lives are still hard to get, though the lowering was a nice touch.
CURVY LASERS
Music's a lot more ambient, especially the final boss.  Will need to listen more to form concrete opinions.  Only new track I've heard that I didn't like up front was the S5 boss.

Like S5 boss, the rain spell. Just following whatsherface across the screen on normal pretty much completely dodges it. It's possible to clear it without even looking at the bullets...
Easiest S5 boss ever, even with the bullshit zigzags.

Hehehe. Even up to now I haven't made a 1cc. I think I die too much without even bombing, that's bad isn't it? I make a lot of silly mistakes during S4 and S6 boss.
For some funny reason, the only legit 1cc I made of Touhou was Mystic Square :V This should warm me up for the older Touhous.

Miko's third to last spellcard, was it? The one that looks like Eternal Meek. IMO this one is plenty easier. When I tried Eternal Meek, I pretty much found it a spray of random that was nearly impossible to dodge, and forcing you to use the bomb she wants you to...

You have to beat that card in Stage Practice instead of Spell Practice.

That's one of my favorite cards, for exactly that reason.
Trying to time it  out on hard is a bitch to do though.

I was expecting bullets that size to have similar hitboxes to the white ones from SA (Danmaku Paranoia etc.), but they use the whole thing instead.

I think Miko's second-last and last cards should probably have been switched. The second-last one's a fair bit harder.

After playing for a while, I'm fine with the difficulty in this game. It's hard enought to be challenging (at least, for someone like me) while still being fun. Unlike UFO.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter if you use the bomb Sakuya is making you use since she's giving you an extra one anyways. Just don't use two bombs and you'll be fine, for both EoSD and TD.
