Title: [Art] ITT NeoSerela learns to draw before Oct.4th
Post by: Serela on September 16, 2010, 04:00:04 AM
Well, I've always kind of wanted to learn how to draw. But now I have an excuse! An excuse that gives me a deadline!

There's a Character Design contest  going on for an MMO I have sentimental memories with, and I kind of want to enter! Thankfully, the artwork isn't the main thing (otherwise I'd be doomed, 2.5 weeks is not enough time to turn into awesomeartist), but I do need to at least be somewhat decent at drawing!

So, I have until October the 4th to obtain a skill of artistry that isn't completely suck, so that I may submit a character design (also includes a lot of typing but I've got that in the bag), and see if it gets anywhere!

As far as the contest goes (If you don't care about specific skip this paragraph), I think it's being run in all the regions the MMO in question (Lunia) is in, which is like 7 or something. In each place, all the game players can submit one character (With concept art, personality, and then of course MMO mumbo jumbo like skills) to the contest. 10 of these submitted characters will be picked by the staff (per region) and the players will vote on them to pick one winner for their region. And then, the final winner of each region will be shown to the game developer, and he'll pick one to be made into a playable character.

This is more for fun and learning how to draw then to get far into the contest... although it would be p.awesome, and since it isn't actually an Art contest I'd say I have a chance. As long as I manage to get out something decent, I'll be happy, even if it doesn't get anywhere contest-wise.

ANYWAY. Today, I purchased a pencil sharpener, a sketch pad, and a box of colored pencils (Although they probably won't be used till near the end of this). I then got in bed, onto #touhou-meido IRC on my laptop, freaked out to everyone, and had a mental breakdown holding the pencil near the sketch for awhile. After more freaking out, and googling a ton of stuff for awhile, I've drawn my FIRST HEAD EVER. No, not a penis, you gutterheads. Although UK did tell me to draw that to start out.

Thumbnail'd because it's way too fucking big for the forum. Damn, I forgot to erase the guideline cross thing.

DAY 1:I drew for the first time in forever! It's a head. I wonder if it sucks. Well, for a first drawing, it's not that bad, huh?

Tomorrow... I (hopefully) draw everything else above the waist! And/or practice drawing heads more.

Well, everything what Hakurei SM said was what I was going to, so...Lemme add a few things:
if you make a cross,  try to put the things in the lines. In the vertical one you have to put the mouth and the nose. In the horizontal one try to put the eyes. The bottom end of the vertical one is where the chin should be. Both of the sides that the vertical one separates are simetrical.
Now, the fringe. Umm...I don't know how to explain this, but I'll try: You have to make, like, more hair. The hairs of the kind of fringe I think you wanted to make usually have almost the same height. (that mostly depends on your style or the hair style. Example (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/6906/263535-swr_marisa_large.jpg))
Well, I think most of the people in here agree that the best way of learning is by observing! (be it observing a fan art or observing something real)
And the eyes...Well, there are LOTS of kinds of eyes. More in anime. They depend slightly on your style, but more in the character's personality (or so I think). If you observe some anime eyes for a while, you may be able to see that they are more realistic than what you would think (Then again, or so I think). The lines that are more thicker are the ones that should be the eyelashes.

Well, I hope this helps you :3

Hmm, yeah, the forehead is way too small. Originally I just put the eyes where they look like they'd go if I chopped off most of the top of their head that's covered by hair, and then just... like, tried to extend it with hair afterwards.

Hmm, I was thinking maybe the mouth should be lower... guess it really should have been.

Unfortunately, don't think I'm going to get more art done today... I feel really under the weather, plus my wrists feel like they're on fire... I just don't think I can draw today. God dammit, I'm short enough on time already ;_; I hope I feel better tomorrow!

Thanks for the help, my next one should look a lot better~

Remember hair flows. It's like a fluid.
I should learn that lesson myself.

Oh god that looks better than my drawings and I've been taking lessons for 3 years.

Then again all I learned in those lessons were colouring so :V

Yeah; are ya aiming for manga-style or real life? Generally the forehead's up to the top of the hair's like almost the same size as the eyes to the chin, I think. Get a portable mirror and draw yourself to get a sense of general perspective?

I don't know :ohdear:

When I started, there WAS space between her eyes for a third, but, uh, somewhere along the line that space kind of... yeah... then I agonized and erased and redid the lines for the eyes so much that they're a ton darker then the rest of her face. Oh, well, umm, maybe she's wearing too much eyeliner. And irisliner.

And, umm, has a tumor in her head that's making her upper skull bulge out disturbingly.

I think I'm going to erase and redraw her head above the mouth. Yeah. And make it a lot smaller this time. And less dark.
