Title: Touhou Fangames
Post by: Garlyle on June 11, 2009, 09:43:52 AM
So, I'm kinda curious.

What Touhou Fangames/related games do people here have/play?  There's a damn lot out there and I know for a fact Touhou Wiki is very incomplete on many, so...

My personal collection (And thoughts) includes...

*Super Marisa Land (Need to sit down and play this more)
*Super Marisa World (God damn is this game hard.  But fun.  Cleared up to World 5)
*Patchcon! Defend the Library (Played it once, and that was it D:)
*Touhou Rekkadan: Rift in Friendship (Damn fun.  Overhead fighter.  Short, but awesome)
*Cute STG Trainer Moedan (Simple and generally stupid-easy, but double-spellcard is awesome)
*Uwabami Breakers (Drunken ZUN Danmaku.  Even when not Touhou, ZUN makes fun games)
*Shuusou Gyoku (Pretty good, but damn fast @_@ And Extra Stage is BULL.)
*You Are Newspaper (Decent idea, but way too fast and short.  Aya-based "multi character bosses".  )
*Tobi Marisa (Too bad it's so damn easy unless on Lunatic... side-scrolling Touhou game focused on Marisa and stage 1-2 chars)
*Mystical Chain (Just a demo, but it's freaking nuts.  Beat'em'up fighter with crazy boss fights)
*Touhou Fuumaroku: Story of Eastern Wind (Semi-accurate SoEW remake.  Uses only current characters + Mima, but all bullet patterns are basically the same.  Pretty good, considering)
*MegaMari (How'd I forget that!?)

I'm also currently downloading Ressurection of Heaven's Liquor from disfact's site.

Just curious what others have and have played, and what they'd recommend hunting down.

Well, I have Moedan, Mystical Chain, Megamari and awaiting till I can set up Danmakufu correctly so I can download Concealed the Conclusion.

I also got touhou dreamers party, which is fairly decent but gets boring after a while.

And don't forget that godawful: Touhou Hikari ~ Periphery of power.

Touhou Soccer's pretty fun, and this is coming from someone who hates football with a passion.  I'd highly recommend downloading it if you haven't already~

*Patchcon! Defend the Library (Played it once, and that was it D:)

*Uwabami Breakers (Drunken ZUN Danmaku.  Even when not Touhou, ZUN makes fun games)

Uwabami breakers is not ZUN's production afaik. He allowed the MOF engine to be used. I think he only composed the Disco dude's music for it. All others are done by another team. Neverless, Uwabami is good stuff but quite hard to handle. Even those who play Touhou.

Patch-con is funny, the squeeking voices make me lol each time I play. But it is too easy and gets boring quite fast. Wish they turned it into more RTS with bases and stuff. Frikken Iku's Tesla coil etc etc.

I didn't see 'Concealed the Conclusion' in the list based on danmaku-fu. Instead of Heaven's liquer, play that.

I have Mystical Chain, Patchcon, and Rekkaden from your list.
I also got:
Touhou Line Drawing, a pretty fun danmaku like line drawing game.
Touhou Gensokyo Rensa, a fighter, a bit similar to SWR.
Megamari from Tasofro, it's a cute platformerm, basically Megamen is Touhou style.
Touhou Unreal Mahjong, a great mahjong game with touhou chars. Too bad that some of the pic's are just ugly, Keine looks like an idiot, and Pathy is more demonic than Remilia, lol.
Oh and Touhou soccer II. One of the best touhou fangame,
I also tried Touhou Pocket War, but that just ain't my style...

I have MegaMari, I have mystical chain, which is awesome, Moedan, Endless Alice, PatchCon, and used to have Rift in a Frendship (but I lost it, and don't know where to find it again ;_:). All of them are good, if not great, games.

Playing RoHL can't be as bad as downloading it when the download times out and stops anywhere from 4mb in to 140mb.  T.T;

And I'll need to find CtC at some point, yeah.

Okay, what exactly constitutes "good-vs-great" for you? Or "good-vs-bad," for that matter? (And where to the official Touhou games fall here?)

I tried Touhou Line Drawing, it's insanely difficult.

It has got lawn gnomes for final bosses, male touhou characters called link and not to forget Mecha Kirbys. Heavens's liquor is far more superior then periphery of power in every aspect expect music.

Touhou Soccer's pretty fun, and this is coming from someone who hates football with a passion.  I'd highly recommend downloading it if you haven't already~

...but football is awesome. It's the most popular sport in the world!

Anyways, I don't really play the fan games except for Mystical Chain and CtC.

I have played:

- Concealed the Conclusion (very fun; probably the danmaku game I've put the most time into next to PCB)
- MariAri (fun puzzle game, although the final world is hell)
- MegaMari (good Megaman clone, but probably too faithful to the original NES games for me to fully enjoy)
- Mystical Chain Demo (has promise, although it depends what they do with it)
- Phantasm Romance (a decent Danmakufu script; I'll have to give it another go)
- Resurrection of Heaven's Liquor (kill it with fire)
- Super Marisa Land (couldn't get into it)
- Super Marisa World (damn fun; I've put in a ton of time into this game)
- Touhou Mother (a nice RPG; keeps the style of the Mother [Earthbound] games)

I need to look into Touhou Soccer and PatchCon.  For some reason, I've just avoided them.

heres my collection of Fangames:

-Conealed the Conclusion (shouldn't really need explaining)
-Drunk Tankies Battle in the Eastern (fun top-down arena shooter)
-Gensokyo Tower Defense (a Touhou clone of Desktop Tower Defense (http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Game.asp))
-I Wanna Be the Shrine Maiden (Self Explanatory)
-Master Burner (a Touhou clone of After Burner, starring Marisa)
-Megamari (Touhou clone of Megaman)
-Mystical Chain Demo (side-scrolling Shoot-em-up platformer)
-Patchcon (Touhou RTS, well, a simplified RTS)
-Super Marisa World (Touhou clone of Super Mario World. pretty fun, but the controls can be unforgiving.)
-Touhou Megaton Punch (game about punching a big hole in the ground with one of three Touhou characters)
-Touhou Soccer 2 (Touhou clone of the Captain Tsubasa games. damn good)

At least RoHL is it's own game. PoP is nothing but a crappy Danmakufu script.

- MariAri (fun puzzle game, although the final world is hell)
I've seen videos of it, but it just looks painfully slow.  (And I'm playing Disgaea right now, so it's not like I don't spend a lot of time on games...)

My list:
-MegaMari (love this game)
-Rift in a Friendship
-Mystical Chain
-Tobi Marisa
-Concealed the Conclusion
-Touhou Mother
-Super Marisa World

I would try  this game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=729fwlVf1s4&feature=related) but I can't seem to find anything else about it.

Lesse I have...

-MegaMari
-PatchCon
-Super Marisa World (deleted because I don't play it anymore)
-Touhoumon (does this even count?)

I don't really play any of these anymore, and I would download new ones if my internet wasn't so shitty.

Sorry for bump, but

I got!
Touhou Puppet Play, Mystical Chain, Touhou Mother, and even Touhou Unreal Mahjong.
I also have Phantasm Romance and Concealed the Conclusion, for Danmakufu... and
I got two that may or may not count as fangames, but they're the Suneo and Family Mart bosses.
Do the MoF and SA Phantasms count as fangames?

Plus,
I'm tempted to look further into this Perihpery of Power game.

Reupload please.

Wow, lots of the stuff's already mentioned, I guess one to add is

Touhou Unreal Mahjong (From D.N.A. software, over 100 playable characters ranging from PC98 to UFO and still knows nowhere to stop.
ZUN is a playable character
)

I hear the translation patch was "...meh", so if anybody knows how I may be able to do something about that, please tell me.

-Touhou Megaton Punch (game about punching a big hole in the ground with one of three Touhou characters)
Sounds like that mini-game from Kirby Super Star.

MariAli starts out slow but apparently gets REALLY hard near the end. Also, definitely get the full version of Mystical Chain (through me) because it is awesome.

There is also the Gyakuen Touhou series (of two games), which is basically Aya Shameimaru: Ace Attorney. If you like the real AA games, you'll like these. They lack the polish of the real ones, but they're alike where it counts. Of course, until the translation comes out (which is still going to be a while), you'll need to know Japanese to get anything out of it.

I gots:
Mystical Chain: Was really fun, kind of lacks replay value though. Difficulty is also pretty inconsistent. The production quality and music of this game is really obscene though.
Touhou Labyrinth: Seriously, this game is so amazing to me. Never have I ever seen a game with a perfect blend of challenge, balance, and variety (of characters to use, possible party makeups, enemies and bosses to fight, etc). The unique take on SP, focus, and spells adds a huge level of depth to strategy in combat, no more spamming fight/casting ultima/flare/elemental weakness/whatever over and over, thank goodness.
Touhou Labyrinth + disk: Unfortunately fails to meet the quality of Touhou Labyrinth in almost every catagory. Only 2 new tracks over the course of 10 floors, 1 page of characters, very plain and often uselessly itemized equipment, just plain WEIRD looking enemy art compared to before (regular mobs, bosses look fine), and no balance in terms of level requirements for each floor...Oh, and pretty boring boss fights, pretty much everything is a tired old "get to 20% health then 1shot the party on my next move after I cast focus" boss.

I'm TOTALLY looking forward to the special disk *Pokes Forza* Didja get it yet? huh huh didja huh? huh?!?!  >=P

Gensokyo Tower Defense: The best Tower D game I've played. The selection of towers is greater than any other TD game I've played except for the elemental type ones where you mix em or whatever. But those ones tend to lack balance and just have 1 formula you can abuse for the whole game so whatever. The danmaku in it is also pretty. I mean you actually danmaku the enemies down. None of that bullets/lasers/rockets shooting straight all the time nonsense. It also involves more strategy in tower placement in maze shapes since the danmaku tends to act a certain way other than just shooting straight.
The selection of maps, along with the map editor (which I can't get to work unfortunately) also is great. It also has a relatively wide selection of difficulty settings, and is the ONLY TD game that is designed to be non-juggleable (I hate juggling) that I STILL cant beat on its hardest settings...Unfortunately I'm wondering if the 100 is even possible without Aya. It's considered extra though so it might not really be intended to be *shrugs*.

Touhou Disgaea: To be honest I haven't played it much because I heard about a translation project for it and am just waiting patiently for it.

Touhou Pocket Wars Evo: I haven't played this as much as I'd like to since I'm working on a translation patch for it myself. It's really close to being complete though so soooooon. So far t hough it seems like a great game to play while doing other things, lurking IRC, whatever. Doesn't need quite the same level of attention as most games. The whole remake thing really adds a level of replay value that's really impressive, kinda like disgaea! I can't wait till I have a whole whack of multi-remade characters owning up phantasm opponents.

Touhou Soccer 2: You know I really was having fun with this game but I stopped cold-turkey at some point. It was pretty fun though, and travel mode looked like it offered some pretty good replay value too. Not awesome amounts, but a pretty good amount. My only beef was that the AI was pretty tedious sometimes. It was very predictable, and most often just plain exploitable, and yet sometimes it could own you by sheer cheating (impossible to intercept one-twos over and over straight to your goal with some super shot that cost them no guts at all, yeahhh...)

Fushigi no Gensokyo: I haven't really played this guy because I can't read Japanese, and it's not fun without being able to understand anything. I mean the gameplay isn't really story-based but it's a rogue-like..and roguelikes tend to be especially exciting because of all the random loot drops which are absolutely key for survival sometimes. But every piece of loot  just makes me wonder "wtf is that". And alt-tabbing to look up at a guide/translation with every drop just isn't fun...some day I'll play it when I can understand it >=).

Defiant of Shrine Maiden: I actually don't have this game, but I've seen some videos and it looks steller. The intro music is amazing, and the battle screen looks pretty deep. I mean it's clearly like Touhou labyrinth where you actually require strategy to win fights. And all those stats and guages on the characters really interest me. I know that there are people trying to translate it though. I figure it wont be done anytime soon I'm not involved in the translation so I really have no clue, but something tells me to expect years instead of weeks/months. But I'm patient >=), I really do want to try this badboy sometime though.

Touhou Danmakufu
Touhou Gensou Dokasuka Wars
RoHL (eh, not playing it due to starting over fight with Mima like 50 times)
Touhou Fuumaroku

I don't know if you consider this a Touhou fangame but......
Mrs. Estacion! trial version. DO WANT THE FULL THING. It's like Hollow World of God but BETTER because of music with ZUN INSTRUMENTS. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3CoPv1kzn8) And yet, the graphics are darn impressive. :V

Here's a rather boring video of this guy getting trounced by the first stage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4jvDQE9ouI.
I can't find the trailer video anymore, but it definately looks more disgaea-esque in that. I think it had Geopanals IIRC, and it definately had those throwing-people-tower things going on. The game isn't actually CALLED Touhou Disgaea of course, but I think it's more Disgaea-like than any other tactics game.

Played Touhou Mother recently and...yeah...one of the most fun RPGs I have played in a long time.

What was that?
8/16-bit JRPG about Touhou?
Reimu and Marisa as you starting members?
Yuka and Mima as the rest of your party members?
Playable Sanae sections where she acts like Samus Aran complete with Missiles, Super Missiles and Energy Tanks...in RPG form?
SDM stage has the Castlevania: Rondo of Blood soundtrack?
You get to ride in an R-Type?

Did I mention that you can use Mima?

- MegaMari (didn't play much of it)
- Koumajou Densetsu (same)
- Scarlet Meister (I like the patterns, don't like the big player sprites, though -- makes dodging more difficult than in Progear)
- PatchCon (multipliers! swarms! explosions! cute screams! Err..)
- Concealed the Conclusion (got bored after trying to graze and milk Meiling's nonspells)
- Phantasm Romance 2.5 Plus (faster-paced stages and boss attacks, awesome patterns to watch and even more awesome to play against, diversity of enemy attacks which are also enjoyable to watch and dodge, good bgm.. I'd like to get to EX4 myself when I have the time -- I thought that I could get to it if I survived EX3; if EX4 is really not accessible that way, I should've selected EX4 when I had the chance :V  Have you people noticed how the stage backgrounds are fuzzy in EX4? Also.. these bgms.. -- both from Diadra Empty.. but anyways.. the bgm for Reimu's final patterns? )
- Desperation of Alcoholic Dream
- Hopping Tenshi (I miss Hopping Yamame, though)
- SplatterFaith (lost interest on it after seeing that
I had to understand japanese to complete Extra.. despite me not having played enough to get past Chensaw
)
- another flash game (http://hokkyokutenban.web.fc2.com/flash_oringame.html) where Orin must collect flaming souls while avoiding other characters

edit: forgot these three (worth mentioning):
- Butterfly Flies For Fry
- Fla Fla Flan
- Cirno Training

This is still the best Touhou fangame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if2VnNWyQsM)

Oh wait :3

dfkjsdfjasdkflewajfksjd I forgot about that video
That was actually the first time I had ever seen Touhou, now that I think about it. Didn't know what it was at the time, I just saw a bunch of girls with cool effects and AMAZING music. It wasn't until a year or two later that I found it again randomly and realized it was Touhou and that the song was Sleepless Night on the Eastern Country.

Anyway, I have
-Megamari (I might have deleted this actually, never particularly cared for Megaman games)
-MariAri (so much fun, I should play this more often)
-Mystical Chain (never got far because I'm so amazingly terrible at it)
-Concealed the Conclusion (should really get around to a Hard/Lunatic 1cc of this some time soon...)
-PatchCon (pretty dull, not really a fan of RTS games)
-Touhou Battle Gaiden (TOUHOU TETRIS YESSSSSSSSSSSSS)
-Touhou Labyrinth (fun gamplay + amazingly terrible art = I should really play this more often)
-Hollow World of God, if that counts
Title: Re: Touhou Fangames
Post by: Erppo on June 29, 2010, 01:31:20 AM
Please tell me Scarlet Meister is some sort of joke. I consider myself somewhat above average shmup player but after several attempts I can't even clear Easy with all available continues. It seems like the game is deliberately made to confuse you, starting with the character switching and the fact that both of them have same looking hitboxes on screen. I have 1cc'd Progear, I should be able to deal with some horizontal danmaku dammit!

And yeah, everyone should play Touhou Mother. The gameplay is honestly not very good but the story and humor more than make up for it. I don't think any other game has made me laugh so much.
