Title: Okuu Quest Moreso - A Z-Machine Adventure

>You are Reiuji Utsuho, and the world is wrong. Now you're going to fix it.
>You are a resident of Gensokyo Isle, an isolated nation located in the Pacific Ocean, established some decades ago in the wake of WWII by the Japanese and American Governments. You live in a small, run down double with your roommate Orin. Your adoptive mother and landlady Satori lives in the other half of the house. You are twenty-one years old, or so you thought, and work as a repair woman for Kawashiro Heating and Air. You know this now to be a life you lived outside of your true self.
>You are also The Subterranean Sun, the heir to Yatagarasu's power. You are feared by many, and among the most power people to walk the face of Gensokyo. You lived in the Palace of the Earth Spirits with your own, Satori, and your fellow pet (practically a sister) Orin. You watched over the Hell of Blazing Fires.
>You think of yourself as a generally well-meaning person. You have a somewhat poor memory, and keep a notepad with you at all times to assist with that. As such, your grades in school were mediocre, and were never able to pursue your dream of becoming a nuclear technician with Gensokyo Research Foundation. In your proper life, you had a tendency to go rather loopy when you took a blow to the head; resulting in a very embarrassing battle with Sanae. However, you've proven to have an aptitude with mechanical things, and have found yourself a comfortable niche repairing heating and air conditioning systems in this life; before you were a friend of Nitori's, but never learned much from her or the other Kappa. You have an inordinate fondness for crows, being a crow youkai this even carried over into your human life and some of the neighbors have complained about your tendency to feed them. You enjoy video games, good music, good food and good times; like practically any normal person your age. You and Orin have managed to secure a comfortable living together, if somewhat spartan. In your proper life, you lived in the somewhat empty Palace of the Earth Spirits.
>You awoke yesterday morning with a profound sense of alienation, and the conviction that everything you know is wrong. It frightened you like nothing you've ever experienced. For nearly an hour, you laid in bed, almost to tears from the absolute terror that you were losing your mind. But, you can't deny it. The world is wrong. What you know is wrong. You do not know how or know why, but you know it is wrong. And, you know that if you told this to anyone, they would think you are mad. Even the few you have shared it with have proven to be very skeptical. It has left you feeling like you are apart of the world, like you're some stranger who woke up on another planet. But, you have resolved not to take it laying down. You have vowed to find out how the world is wrong, and prove you are not going mad. Then you learned the truth. about yourself.
>You have spent the past three days traveling around the island, looking into things. Your memory is terrible and you really should write things down more often. You have discovered a robbery at the harbor, but have no leads on it. You have visited the shrines of the island seeking help, getting different kinds of advice from each; the Myouren Shrine suggesting you look within and look without to compare to what is within, the Moriya Shrine telling you to try to put it out of your mind, and the Forest Shrine telling you to follow your heart. You have befriended Maribel and Renko, paranormal investigators and detectives. You've made friends with a kindly gardener named Yukari. You've investigated rumors of a haunting at the Museum, inconclusively. You have helped your neighbor, Miss Heida, save her house from being accidentally condemned. You've tried to make arrangements for new sources of information from a pawnshop. You've made progress toward being accepted into the University and following your hitherto abandoned dream of becoming a nuclear physicist; you just need to prepare for the exam. You have had a role in getting your adopted sister possessed by a ghost, and having an awakening similar to yours. You have been unusually hungry the past couple days. You've managed to tour the Research Facility and learn of its hidden sections. You have begun a relationship with Parsee Mizuhashi, a conspiracy theorist you met in hopes of getting more information. You've explored the wilder parts of the island, and found it is full of flowers and home to something otherworldly called Stargazer. You have been possessed, in some sense, by the Stargazer as well as some spectral crow; the latter of which has fused with you. You have made friends with Stargazer, but lost contact recently. You have broken into the Research Institute, and found your Fusion Gear labeled as SCP-969. You have awakened, and learned Sanae is part of what happened to the World. You have defeated Sanae, Kanako, and Suwako, and are now taking steps to fix the world once and for all.
>You are presently making plans with Keine, whom you have just awakened.

>"I've already visited Reimu. Parsee, and the other person who helped me out in the institute are taking shelter there for the moment. And I promised Nitori I'd pick her up to protect her from the Foundation people."
>"I'm actually kind of worried about Orin, too. I was with her only a short time ago, and then she didn't answer her cell phone, after the fight with Kanako and Suwako."

>Keine nods.

> "One thing is bugging me though. Sanae and Kanako both told me over and over various things basicly saying that I am in the wrong and am being selfish. When I think about it... I wonder if putting everything back to how it was would make Satori suffer... I don't want to make her suffer, and yet she would likely tell me to "do what I think is right." But even knowing that, I'm hesitant about it all. I'm guessing at what she would say, but I have no idea if she would rather live this life over her life in the real Gensokyo."

>"I am afraid I don't know Satori well enough to answer that for you," says Keine. "But, given she didn't choose the course her sister did, perhaps that says something? Either she didn't wish to, or could not bear to."

>You enter Satori's side of the house. It still feels like home, despite having moved out, and despite memories of a whole different and likely more genuine life. You walk into a living room, done up with old white wallpaper with little polka dots. There's pictures of family on the walls, as well as numerous animals; pets and wild animals. There's a TV in the corner, opposite of the couch. On the old striped couch is the kindest person you've known in two lifetimes, laying down with three cats curled up on her; Gram, Marsil, and Crissaegrim. She is wearing her old blue nightgown, complete with open-toed slippers.

It's rather like someone feeling up and down your arm at random, only with the periodic twinges from a feather being tweaked a little too much. After a moment, she stops, and says, "So, my little crow's finally gone and done it...But, what will you do now? The police and the scientists are going to both want you."

>"Well, I suppose that sounds interesting," she says.
>You take her outside, and gather her up into your arms. She's heavy enough, worse than Kanako was, but you're able to get into the air easily enough. As you climb, Satori cringes against you and clenches her eyes shut. Once you level off, she eventually opens her eyes, and starts to stare toward the sky. "Utsuho, dear," she says, "Maybe you should talk to help settle my nerves a bit? For instance...maybe you could tell me about this new girlfriend of yours?"

>She nods. "So you've been staying with her, right? What's her place like?"
>Much of the trip goes like this, as Satori prods and cajoles little bits of information here and there from you. You manage not to let anything particularly personal slip, but you suspect she's put little bits of it together.
>You're able to keep fairly high up this time, which leaves you feeling reasonably secure in being unobserved. The going is slow, you have to glide and rest a lot more with Satori in tow. You quickly learn to warn her ahead of time when you're about to bank or dive a little to pick up more speed. Just about every unexpected move makes her cry out; you start to count your blessings that she doesn't get airsick.
>As you fly over Uptown, you find that the police as still there, but not son concentrated as before. As you continue on toward the outskirts, you see they are focusing a lot of effort there; there are numerous barricades set up at the moment.
>Soon enough, you reach the shrine, doing your best to land gently enough not to rattle Satori any worse than she already is. Landing outside the torii, she is all too happy to be on the ground again. And you need to sit down.

Satori putters around the shrine quietly, poking here and there. At one point, she offers a prayer at the shrine. She also spends a minut eor so contemplating Parsee, which makes you more nervous than you'd like to admit. >The painting is more or less as you remember it, a scene of a cavern, filled with various crystal formations. You don't think it's any natural place. You didn't see any hint of an eye to it originally, but looking at ti now, you can kinda see how the cave walls are striated to make one.
>"Well, alright," says Satori, as she accepts the painting. You see her tense up as she takes it in hand, then stares at it. The painting itself begins to move in her grasp, then twist and distort! As you watch, it melts, the resulting goo flowing around Satori's arm and around her body. Then it coalesces into her Third Eye.

>"What," Parsee says. "There's nothing up there!"
>"It's not written yet," says Keine. "There's just some sort of possibilities that are fairly likely to happen."
>With that, she begins to get to work. Or...at least you think she gets to work, as she closes her eyes and holds the crystal tightly. The colorful lines around you begin to whip quietly whip around. At one point, one of them touches you, and phases through you. Parsee holds tightly to your hand. You watch them with an eye used to discerning danmaku patterns, and notice many of them intertwine and some stretch off beyond your sight.  Curiously enough, for all their twisting and wending, none on them ever curve back on themselves, they're always going upward, and never downward.
>"I think I get it now," whispers Parsee at one point. "She's Stargazer, isn't she? Look at the hair, and how she's built."
>After some time passes, maybe ten minutes, the swaying of the lines comes to a halt. "That should do it," says Keine. "I'll definitely have to give it a check-up for the next few months, but everything should be proper again. I should warn you, though, there are going to be some...oddities. People may notice them, they may not. It won't be anything huge, I don't think, but I won't be able to tell what they are until we actually step out. At the very least, everyone should be fine. So, get ready."

>Continue onward to the bridge

>It seems that way.
>You continue toward the bridge. It is a large wooden structure, easily large enough to accommodate a parade,  that spans a river from where most of the city's water is drawn. It's always been kept in good condition, but you've never really noticed it until now. Underneath it, on the bank opposite of the city, you can see a small, modest house.

>This must be the first time the Oni haven't been drunk in... well, ever.

>You've seen some of them making up for lost time, but yes. This is probably the most sober the city has been since it's founding.

>You head toward the house, flying down to it easily. It is a small and cozy-looking home built a distance away from the riverbank, and propped up on foot-high pegs. Still, you can see some marks of flood damage on it. It reminds you somewhat of the Hakurei Shrine in the other world, with its smallness and general cozy nature.

The house is somewhat cluttered, just like her apartment was, though more of the clutter seems to be tools and such, rather than various cultural artifacts. Ah bless ye.

>Lots of things. Some might have allowed you to jump paths. In the case of Medicine, you would have delivered the venom, and she would have chugged it all down in front of you. Despite getting violently ill, she would have survived it miraculously. Literally miraculously, and you would have learned she was a toxomancer; an adept whose obsessions and abilities revolve around toxins, and found a powerful ally and a way to learn about the supernatural aspects of the isle.

It's nice participating in something till the end, even if I didn't contribute a lot, I'll try to participate more for the next Z-Machine Adventure

>Sort of. Once the Foundation was raided, you started a death counter before things got bad.

>Would it have been possible to meet Keine around the university, earlier? And would that have triggered a similar recognition from Stargazer?

>What would have happened if we'd botched things and just plain lost to Kanako and Suwako?

>Yes, and yes. But, if it was before Utsuho had awakened, Keine's reaction would have been closer to Orin's. Stargazer managed to awaken as well when Utsuho did, but she didn't really know it or understand it, due to not being incomplete.

>Not even that. She'd have to awaken on her own. Stargazer just managed to do it because she was joined with you when you did it.
>No. Keine would have been on her own.

>If you had beaten the EX Boss and brought up the incident, you might have talked your way out of the fight entirely. At the very least, they wouldn't have fought to unconsciousness.
>If you only brought the flower stuff, it wouldn't have swayed Suwako, but Kanako wouldn't have fought to the point of unconsciousness.
>If you only the EX Boss, neither would have fought to the point of unconsciousness.
>If you had successfully gone through the SCP data and convinced them their changed had caused a surge of Keter Class objects, it would have swayed Kanako, and put Suwako on the edge.

>I wing damage to a great deal. Generally, its "Do I feel this was enough to break an attack?" Utsuho, though, hits for fucktonnes with her charge attacks.
>Stronger, but due to being only one thing, not so bad. You would have needed to fight it more traditionally. And maybe draw upon Shadow of the Colossus.

Late from the ending party due to day long travel home.

As always, it was an excellent adventure, though I felt that the last battle and ending was lacking. Now that I know about the Ex Boss, I see why. :V

>It would not have made them less upset, but it would have made them more receptive to accepting defeat. Sanae would have been able to fulfill her dream, defeated or not, and thus they wouldn't be quite so impassioned to carry on.

>What would have happened if we'd botched things and just plain lost to Kanako and Suwako?

The Ending was threadbare partially due to the fact I let you play the ending. Normally, I would have summarized it all up past Keine starting her work. Also, because of the placement of Maribel Quest, which didn't allow for longterm resolutions.
>I had a few obvious ones in mind: I figured it would come down to Yamame, Maribel, or Nitori. Maybe Orin.  Parsee was originally meant to be an assistant NPC akin to Nitori and the Spirit Club. I never originally intended her to go out travelling with youse.
