Title: PC98 ending translations
Post by: Jaimers on March 07, 2010, 02:01:22 PM
Apparently there's this massive let's play of all the Touhou games going on over at Something Awful and they are even translating everything, including the endings!

So far, SoEW and Reimu's and Marisa's scenario from PoDD are done.
If the thread continuous, we can also expect the translations from MS, LLS and the rest of the PoDD ones.

Check it out:

Just though I'd share this with you all.

...those SoEW endings. *facepalm* You'd never see an ending like that in a different Shmup. It's so fitting for a Touhou game, though.

ZUN, oh you~

Something Awful just gave my computer something horribly awful.

I am extremely mad at this thread now.

I can't stop luaghing. Her yin yang balls can turn into a cat... A cute one. But still this is some neat stuff to see.

FYI, to people who aren't keeping up, they've now posted good and bad ending 1 for Lotus Land Story, so read up.

I'll put the endings in text to keep...just incase the thread is gone or something happens...or...you know

The wiki for the touhou endings was gone...that's why. I don't wanna take any chance to lose anything, especially something that's important

edit: also anyone know how to contact that guy or guys doing the translation? we could get translations to make a patch.

Something Awful is a little more stable than a controversial wiki, so don't worry.

Well I did it anyway lol. I found out the guy has a YouTube account and I messaged a formal message about this thread and how thankful we are(come on I know some others are) for those translations and asked him if he could do the three bad endings.

Just like to point this out since nobody else has, but doesn't ZUN have some sort of rule against posting the endings online? That's always seemed kinda important to me, since he doesn't ask a whole lot else.

Yes but this is for english translating purposes. The touhou-endings.wikia.com was gone. Everyone else just translates the windows games

I think there should be SOME way for people to be able to know what the PC-98 endings are; without this, anyone who can't read Japanese wouldn't know what the endings are until the PC-98 patches are done. Which doesn't look to be happening any time soon.

It's a reasonable request from ZUN as long as we can see the endings when we beat the game, but since we still can't then, due to a language barrier... well, yeah. We kinda deserve to know what it says, if we beat the game ourselves already.

Indeed. His request is perfectly valid, assuming we have translation patches. Until we do, I endorse the endings being posted online. Heck, even afterwards, a script of them is handy for reference.

Somehow though, I think the people doing the PC98 English patches already had a translated script for the endings.

For that matter, seeing as how neither the author, nor anyone on Something Awful has mentioned this rule of sorts that ZUN had put forth, it makes me think that the LPer will continue showing the endings even in the windows games. And on that note, do you believe that the videos will have the endings edited out once the English patches are released? This being a Something Awful LP, a lot of people are going to see them, many who haven't earned the right, and many more who haven't even played the game at all. This is precisely the sort of scenario ZUN feared when he made that rule.

Not that I'm not grateful to finally see what was going on in the endings, but I'm simply concerned over how casually the endings are being shown, as if it were just a matter of course.

I'm no expert on Something Awful, but something tells me if it was brought to their attention that ZUN didn't want the endings to be spoiled, they'd be like "cool story bro," and move on. Methinks you're taking it a little too seriously.

Also, I have it on good authority the patchers have the endings scripts. :smug: The people doing it on SA have a better translation though.

We heard that for like months...and there was no update on anything related to PC98

Move on as in disregard it, or heed the rule and move on? You weren't very clear which.  :V

The same could be said of SWR, but progress on that was continuous throughout. For that matter, we've received news on patch progress pretty much every time the question of the PC98 patches have come up, courtesy of the user Alice Margetroid. Or was that what you were referring to when you said that you heard it for months?

It was before Alice Margatroid posted anything.

to be a jerk, it's a lot better to assume he expects that you learn Japanese for yourself, instead of expecting translation patches in your mother tongue

Heh. I rather pay them to do the patches. That'll get them going. (I don't have time to learn japanese). :D

Seems you can't view topics on the SA forums without an account right now. There's nothing on the front page about it, and I can't seem to find news about this anywhere else, so I'm pretty much in the dark here. However, in the mean time you can access the currently uploaded LPs from this directory (http://www.kisamayatsu.com/TH/); the html files take you to the pages you're used to for viewing them.

As a member of the SA forums, I feel the need to speak up as of seeing this topic.

Mostly on the subject of endings. It WAS brought up on one of the pages, I believe during Lotus Land Story.

It was immediatly called the stupidest part of the whole of Touhou outside of powerlevels or something and the person running the thread (who is also a moderator over there) said that BECAUSE it's taboo they feel like showing off endings more, to be a rebel. Followed was discussion on how it was utterly pointless because, in the case of PC-98 games, no one COULD see/understand the endings normally. Then onto talking about how this was in English so why would ZUN even care.

Also as for why people who aren't members can't view the forums is that they close them off to non-members to lure those to get memberships.

I'd like to point out that via emulation (which is how I'm sure you guys are playing the PC-98 games), many of us have seen the endings many times. You guys translating the endings is something some of us have been looking forward to for a long time, and some of us DO care.

And, thanks for featuring my LLS extra no deaths run. o/ Tell that to the guy over there.

I show off endings on youtube. I got a couple of complaints but I uploaded them because i know some people suck at Touhou lmao. Yeah it's useless.

Yuka's good and bad endings are up.

And it looks like they either don't know that there are extra endings and special credits for clearing MS extra, or they don't care. >_>

Not everyone can beat the Extra stages with little/no effort like you. :V

Yeah I know, but I'm just saying it'd be kinda sad that they'd just bypass them because they don't know about them. Hell, if playing through it was the only reason they wouldn't translate those endings, I'd be willing to record them and send it to them. >_>

For LLS, they go "Hey there's an extra stage and stuff but I'm not going through all the effort needed to learn it so here's someone ELSE doing it" and links to some video. So they know there ARE extra stages. Although, they might not know MS Extra actually has endings; albeit very short ones.

...Which is what I was talking about it in the first place. >:V Even if it's greyed out initially, extra is always shown on the title screen.

Well theres always cheat engine. Google it:P

It's a useful thing to use. I'm sure it'll work with the pc98 games.

Mima's good and bad endings are up. Both noted and also noted Yuka's good and bad endings.

Also...I got the star symbol text and the heart symbol text...

But what should be used for the sweatdrops and the ghost symbols? If anyone can copy paste them here or show me a place where to copy them, that would be nice.
