Alright so as I mentioned this in the parlour thread earlier, I am offering to make Visual Novels out of people's Touhou fanfiction works, although other kinds of stories are fine too. Basically you people will supply me with stories and media and I'll put it all together.
This thread will be for requests. When you make a request, include the title of your story in your post.
Once you've made a request, there are some things you will need to do first before I can make your story into a VN.
What I need
- A story or script: You can use your existing stories or make a new one, doesn't really matter to me. To make things easier for everyone, save your story with notepad++ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/) because it keeps track of line count on the side margin. Also give the file the same name as your story.
- Images: Basically you'll need two kinds of images, backgrounds and cutins of characters. You'll also need a title screen image. The number of images you use is entirely up to you. If you want nothing but a single image in the background, that's fine with me. (although that would kinda defeat the purpose...)
Backgrounds should all be the same size. 800x600 is ideal, but you can have different resolutions if you want. Cutins should also be consistent in size, and fit in the background (don't make them too small or too big, unless you want them to for whatever reason)
You can either team up with an artist, draw them yourself, or just use images from the internet. Nothing is going to be sold for money, so there shouldn't be much of an issue of using other people's stuff.
- Music: This is more or less optional, but a VN without any sound is pretty boring. It would be best to look through your story and think of fitting music to use.
- Sound effects: Also optional. If you can't find all of the sound effects you need, just make a note of it in the storyboard I can see if I can make do with what I have.
- A storyboard: This is to outline how everything will happen. The basic format should be something like this:
Start
Fade in
Play musicZUN
Show background1
Show lines 1 to 10 (in the notepad++ document with your story)
Transition to background2
Show line 11
Show Happy chen
Play CHEEEEEN sound effect
etc
(funny enough this is basically how Ren'Py code works)
Now this might be kinda time consuming, so you don't have to outline every little thing. You can shorten it up a bit an generalize at some parts. For instance you can say stuff like, "generally use Chen!happy except whenever she is sad use Chen!sad" "whenever Ran chengasms play CHEEEN sound effect" etc, and then leave all the hard work to me :V.
You can also specify things like transitions, text color, fonts, screen effects (like all the flashy stuff in Umineko), whatever else you can think of, and I'll do my best to incorporate it into the VN.
Oh yeah another note, you can also specify the text to either be at the bottom of the screen, or cover the whole screen.
- An overall outline: This is only necessary if you want to make a multipath story where the reader makes choices and stuff. Basically I need a flowchart of what choices lead to what paths and so on.
I think that's about everything. If you really want to be fancy you can add things like custom buttons or menus, otherwise I'm going with the Ren'Py defaults.
Once you've accumulated everything on the list, zip it up in a .rar or .zip file, upload it onto the internet (preferably mediafire), and PM me the link.
Now get crackin'!

I'll definitely be interested in this, but I'll give out more info on it once I'm back on a PC.

Hmm, I should have a production name, like Suikama Studios or something :V
I suck at names though hurrr

Robo Unicorn Productions? :V
Also. I should make a fanfic just to do this.

I'd still need the stuff from you though :V

Eh, not that original considering how popular RUA is now :V

You do original things?! :o

Shouldn't we need to make different "route" for the story? Lika most of visual novel, the plot changes according to our action?
I'd like to do Touhou Dark War, since it has dialogues all over. But see how it's going, I think it's just as dark as Tsukihime or Higurashi...
I'll stalk you until it's done Suikama (:<

You don't have to have different routes. Not all Visual Novels have different routes, like Higurashi.
-
Well just to make it more fun to "play", than just "read" :D Just a suggestion tho.
-
I'm currently working on outlining a VN. I'm glad you're serious about this. And I'm also glad I read a pile of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books when I was in grade school.
-
y'know what would make an awesome VN? Douchebag in Gensokyo, you know you want to do it. :V

Bring me the materials and then we'll talk

Arg, the lack of search function is not helping me. Someone else with more forum-fu will likely link you the story.
Yes, I'm a horrible, horrible lazy person.

He probably didn't mean (just) the story, though. But the things mentioned above: cut-ins, backgrounds, music, sound effects, etc.
-
I don't care what you do or how you use it, I just want you to make use of the song "Superfast Jellyfish"
-
Quite aware, I wasn't really serious but more people reading that fic can't possibly be a bad thing.

thank you for posting that. Please continue with the original conversation at hand, la la laa

With the permission of Chaore of course, I think we should turn Chen's Day Out into a visual novel.
Think about it.
-
Once I start updating Gensou City Chronicles, that could turn out awesomely as a VN.
-
White Rose in VN form would be the longest, hardest, most annoying project ever :V
However, Sweet Dreams would not. Hm. Augh, I wish I wasn't so bad at art so I could draw my own cut-ins. :<
-
i am ruro
so bad at art
ಠ_ಠ

ಠ_ಠ
I can't make digital art to save my life. :< Or any editing program more complex than MSPaint, anyway. Cut-ins and the like are beyond me. It is sad.

I'm flattered, but CDO isn't a fic. :V

I'm flattered, but CDO isn't a fic. :V
Yes, I know, but it would make a great visual novel. Or RPG. I'm just saying, mostly because I may not contribute actions, but I still read every new post mostly because it's very interesting, seeing a "what if" story like that.
-
A thought occurs: RPG stories would be really neat sources for VN plots and routes. Maybe they don't all have to be followed to the letter, but RPG's stories tend to be interactive fiction, as opposed to PSL's static fiction. The former is way more viable to convey in VN format, if only because the choices and routes have practically been prewritten already.

Eh they're both equally viable really
You get the real time interaction for RPG stories, and the sound, graphics, and visual effects for kinetic (non-pathed) stories
Anyways it's totally up to you guys :V
-
C'mon Chaore! Give it the go ahead!
-

Not exactly. :V
Taking CDO for an example- Most of the times, even if you choose an irregular choice, the story simply wraps around that choice. There are exceptionally few ways to truly mess things up in RPG stories that aren't 'You attack GOD like an idiot, and as such, die.' We really still have to add in the bad choices that lead to unfavorable ends.
Hell, Even taking examples like Barren Path, where we DID choose the 'fail like morons option', the story wrapped to that. (See: Waking up in Kourindou.) The dynamic, amusingly, kills the advantage it'd perceivably have.
That said, it is easy to add 'bad' options by theorizing 'IF you guys did this, this would happen and shit goes down', you could always do the same with static fiction. (See: And the Utsuho never happen)
I do admit it may be easier to see 'Choice' points, though. You also have to figure out what to trim out, what to keep, and what to take as granted. At that, you also may want to spice it up a bit. You also have to deal with the MC now being more than a simple 'mouth' for the players, perhaps, sprucing up a fitting personality.
Arguably, Its even more work, because its missing the real 'Novel' part of Visual Novel.
C'mon Chaore! Give it the go ahead!
The idea is tempting, But being the somewhat selfish man I am, would want to compile the story myself. I'm not sure I'm capable of finding the time. At that, CDO isn't anywhere near the point I'd find something like this fitting. After all, there is a rather long path still ahead of you all.
If I do take on the task, I'll probably wait until I've managed to finish CDO, which looks like it could take quite a while.
-
Alright then Chaore. It is your work after all.
-
Just adding my two cents, taking one of the RPGs might be too much anyway if Suikama is only just starting. Those things often span over four threads or something, while fiction is (mostly) much shorter.
So starting with something of reasonable length for the start might indeed be the better idea. It also reduces the amount of resources (especially images, cutins) needed.
-
There's already work turning the Mafia games into VN-like packages.

Wha-wha-wha-WHAT?
Why haven't we heard about that before?
That sounds...awesome.

Because said person is just that awesome and rather modest too. No names until the finished product.

Upon further reflection, I consider that what sets stories in RPG apart from CYOAs is precisely that the writers write around whatever Bad End the readers want. (Most of the time, anyway.) And more importantly: they don't give their readers free choice to do what they want. Though, the TH-P userbase is generally very good about reasonable write-ins. Hmm. Might not have been the best comparison, but I still think RPG's fondness of interactive fiction would make for a more entertaining reading experience. Not that static fiction would be bad, mind you.

Both styles have potential to be extremely good for VNs, depending on the writer of the script and the execution of the source material. As a connoisseur of VNs both good, bad, and ugly, I can tell which ones can see good success and which ones can't. I can definitely see where your points can fall in, and it's a perfectly valid point. Furthermore, the potential that static fiction has over its interactive counterpart can only be truly tapped if the writer is extremely compelling (not necessarily good in a technical sense). Simple writing can be turned into something amazing if done right. However, this is a trait that I've seen in very little.
More to the point:

I think this is the course of action that should be taken, personally. VNs are fundamentally simple at first glance, but the inner workings of it can be a lot of hard work. I have a friend around my age who's in a team that's making a VN (I believe it's a yaoi one) and I have no idea on its status yet. I saw a preview of it and it has the music 'n all, despite being far from complete. In about 3 months of work or so, it is probably not even 5% done and there are a shitload of CGs done already.
Hopefully the initial projects are simple and easier to do than some of the more ambitious ones no doubt most other members will have in their heads.

I finished outlining a VN. For reader testing, and for fun, it'll be posted first on my blog as a CYOA story. I tested the HTML earlier, and it looks good. I'll post a link when it's complete.

First project with a story by Ammy? I highly support that.
-
I'm wondering if you've got a title for it yet Ammy?
-
The title's usually the last thing I come up with. The CYOA will be up in about a week, so it'll have a title then. From there, I can easily convert the story to script format.
I should take a picture of the outline and post it with key parts pixelized. It looks like a spider on LSD built a web.

fun fun stuff :3

So uh, just to clarify, who here is even legitly interested in this anyways?

I've been kinda tempted to be a huge jerk and try to make you do this with Patchy Quest, but that'd be making me be a huge jerk.
Also I dun wanna do the legwork.

This seems to be everyone's excuse :V

It's the art, especially with permissions, that's the real problem. Throwing together an outline wouldn't be too difficult (if still time-consuming) but getting a good art set is difficult.

Maybe I should have made this topic in the Art Board then :V

Yeah, still interested. The CYOA piece will be up this week.
-
I want to do this, but I'd only be able to do it over a school break, so you may as well get other projects out of the way before Sweet Dreams.

Sure. Somebody's bound to be interested.
I'd try writing a VN script myself...only I'm too busy atm. Maybe in the summer if you're still doing this.
Good luck~

This looks very interesting... I'd like to team up with someone
because I can't write crap.
I can draw by hand, but if it's on the computer... it'll take awhile, unless if I draw on flash-

Mmm ... I guess that depends on how much work I'll have to do. Cut-ins ?

Yeah that's pretty much it. Ammy said he'll be done his story soon so we'll know just how many we'll need then.
-
Yeah, the story will be finished very soon. I've had a wife out of town and a volcano erupting near here to contend with. But it should be done by the weekend.
I do have it all outlined, so if you need to know the cast, I can post that, if it helps.
-
So uh by "weekend" did you mean last weekend or this one? :V
-
Life happened. Don't make go into details please. Sorry about the delay.
EDIT, 20:34 GMT: I have all the target links done in the blog draft. Didn't expect this many bad ends, but keeping your eyes open should get you on the right track to success.
-
Life happened. Don't make go into details please.
Understandable. Just keep going at your own pace if you need to BV
-
I intend to do plenty of writing tonight, if life permits me. Getting the target links done was the hardest part - having all the connections and possible turns of events plotted out on paper is one thing; converting those into HTML format on a single page took some time. The rest should be easy. Once the story is done, I'll go through it a few times to make sure there are no dead ends or loops, then I'll post the link here.
Thanks again for your patience and understanding.
-
The Touhou CYOA will be up on Friday. Thanks for your patience guys.

So in my spare time I've been working on Tengukami's "Down On The Corner" story, using media mostly from the fighting games. It's pretty much done now, just making some final tweaks before I release it so please wait warmly~

Speaking of collabs, I'm willing to offer myself up for writing talent. At the very least, I can proofread, and have nigh-flawless grammar. When the sake of drama doesn't necessitate otherwise.

UPDATE: The script for Guest of the Moon Princess will be finished this weekend. That means we're gonna need musicians and artists now. The script is based on the CYOA story of the same name, and will includes cues wrt backgrounds, songs and character cut-ins.

Time to search for some recruits :V

Yeah, I'm hoping to get it done by this weekend, because my editor just hit me with an assignment. And not a slice-of-life thing either but some major political story.

Don't worry
Take it easy :yukkuri:
-
omg i just discovered this thread *_* i'd like to do VN for Touhou Shanikusai but i think is quite impossible, it is too long XD
-
So how's it coming along Ammy? :V
-
I've pretty much plateau'd for the time being. My second job gave me some more responsibilities to take on. I can no longer give a precise date for completion (not like I've been able to meet deadlines thus far or anything ...) and I'm sorry about that, truly, because I believe in this project.
Well, the entire story is outlined in the blog entry, and I listed the characters needed in the Art thread on this subject. I guess that's the extent of my contributions for the time being. Again, I apologize, but I feel I'd rather just say "can't do it right now" then give you yet another deadline that I might not be able to meet.
-
Welp, after finishing Sapz I need something else to do so I'll be messing around with some VN stuff~
