Me, I'll just be playing normal until I get a new computer. TT_TT On 1/2 framerate, Unzan slows my game down to 20 FPS, so I clearly can't call any run legitimate until then. On 1/3 framerate...it's still 50 FPS, and this is the setting that makes the game crippled and unplayable in exchange for 60 FPS. :(

EDIT: Also Erebus there may very well be more than one Makai. Don't quote me on this, but I think there are multiple Makais. Look at HRtP, SoEW (stage 3 is in a demon world according to Genji) and MS. These are probably all different worlds.

Did a 1CC through Easy. Some thoughts.
-Stage 5's design violates the #1 rule of shmup design: don't make your fucking bullets blend in with the background. It's all red and blue; the bullets are red and blue; and the enemies decide to spew hundreds of Power and Point items out. This was Easy. I don't want to imagine how confusing the higher difficulties will be.
-The curvy yellow lasers from Shinki and Alice are back, except they don't look like they were drawn in Paint.
-Heartbeat in Stage 6's music is awesome.
-The big yellow Full Power just before the final boss is a cute PC-98 homage.
-The backdrop for the final fight is the same as the one against Shinki, and Makai is mentioned in the dialogue, as already brought up earlier. The final boss also uses Shinki's trademark bullet pattern (wings, restriction lasers and arrow head bullets, and aimed balls). At this point I don't know if it's still a homage to Mystic Square or if ZUN is saying to forget about the PC-98 games.
-Endings are black and white sketches. I thought he had help with the art, so I guess leaving them this way was intentional.
-1CC'ing Easy won't unlock Extra.
-High score entry music reminds me of something out of one of the PC-98 games; a remix, perhaps? I can't put my finger on it.

I failed my first run of normal on Hiziri's Shinki callback card. I have to say that Cosmic Dream is a very neat song. It's very different from every final boss theme before it, but it's got quite a lovely feel to it. It's kind of like something that belongs in PoFV, but significantly more awesome.

Haven't posted here in a very long time, but thought I'd re-register now that a new game is out. My first impressions based on a few runs are majorly positive.
I like stage 4 a lot overall. At first Murasa seemed to bee too much on the easy side, but then I realized that she's not dying yet and still has a 42 second survival card in stage4! I like the bullet patterns, and the anchors were a nice touch.
Stage 5 seems very tough for me right now. Yellow lasers that have weird firing angles and curve just screw with my perception a lot right now, and you seem to get them in stage6 too. The red winged fairys had a very retro feeling for some reason, which made me think we'd get an old character returning at first. Overall I have a very positive impression of stage5, though I already know it's going to be the next Orin for me.
I've only seen about half of stage6 so far, but I'm liking it and the whole game a lot overall. The musics are great, and both the boss attacks and the normal stages are quite interesting. I'm still not the biggest fan of the UFO system for extra lives, but I'll probably get used to it. That doesn't stop me from being annoyed every time I accidentally pick up the wrong colored UFO while bombing though.

Hmm, if I'm understanding the story that's been translated so far,
it looks like Byakuren and her crew were youkai that were residing underground, but they came aboveground when Orin released those evil spirits from the geysers? If so I think this is the first instance of a sequel directly tying into the one before it, which is pretty interesting.

More thoughts on Stage 4-6 and Extra (based on replays):
Stage 4's theme is somewhat hollow-sounding, probably to keep the 'ghostly' theme of the stage. Nothing noticeable happened until Captain Murasa Minamitu enters the stage, and holy, was her theme bad-ass. Once again, ZUN didn't disappoint, though her last spellcard was a bit lackluster compared to her All-Directional Anchor Danmaku, in terms of flashiness.
Stage 5 was... a bit boring. Toramaru was spamming lasers everywhere and somewhat copied Patchy's Non-Directional Laser in one of her spellcards. Her theme sounds intimidating, though; she also holds Nazrin's lantern-thing.
Stage 6 was epicness (even though that's not a word) at its best. The heartbeats were saying 'something is coming' and the atmosphere of the stage was really serious, overall, due to the silence 'cuts' in the music. Byakuren Hiziri was, as Drake said, very Shinki-tastic with the 'wings', lasers, and bullet patterns. She has a magic circle below her feet in her cut-ins, further strengthening her Magician status, and a pretty nice touch.
Definitely an impressive stage.
Extra Stage looks like fun. Stage's theme was nice, though I feel that the pauses on the music were unnecessary. There were laughters in the stage, probably from Kogasa as a sign of playfulness. Nue Houjuu have a very gothic lolita-ish theme; perhaps ZUN tried to invoke the U.N. Owen Was Her? feeling, which did work to an extent. The beginning of the theme reminds me of 'Raging Inferno' from Luminous Arc 2. I could say that this Extra resembles TEoSD the most due to the above reasons. Also, this girl's controlling the freakin' UFOs, and the Raining Wing-Lasers looks awesome.
UFO's looking pretty great; looking forward to play it, myself.

Okay, guess I'd better post here now that I've got that Normal 1cc.
Stage 4 was meh, there wasn't really enough going on. Music was awesome, but it always is. Murasa was a decent enough fight until Sinker Ghost (?) at which point things started getting a little retarded.
Stage 5 is godlike. Awesome stage, awesome music. Syou is entertaining enough and has a great kinda sinister theme that ZUN doesn't do a lot. (My only complaint is her third card which is sort of whut.)
Stage 6 - nothing sets a scene better than a heartbeat. Stage 6 music is beautiful, stage is basically 'Hey have these UFOs you're gonna need them'. Byakuren is another fun fight, and again the music is amazing.
Extra from what I've seen is very meh. The stage is alright and the boss is fun, but Kogasa midboss is really irritating. I'll probably grind a clear in the next few days.
All in all, actually much more entertaining than I expected to be. Wondering what people are going to do with these characters and waiting on a translation.

The game is awesome. Am loving it so far. Final spell card seems slated to be the new VoWG, maybe. There were loads of surprises that I didn't expect too. This seems to be the most difficult Easy mode so far too.
What I don't like about the game is the masses and masses of power-ups that the faries drop from Stage 4 onwards. It, frankly, seems overdone and actually obscures the bullets, making it harder to play. Extra stage also seems easier than Easy mode from the above replay.

I would like to think otherwise but I think those 4 extra lives I got between stage 1 and 3 really helped towards the 1cc normal specially since I was in the last life at Byaku. And I miss-farmed a bit in them middle.

Stage 6 is now my favourite final stage ever. It's appropriately harder than the previous stages *cough Utsuho*, and the attacks are interesting to dodge. Haven't tried Extra yet, but hopefully it won't disappoint too much.
The UFO life system brings it's own flavour to 1 cc'ing different difficulties. The lives you get from them are pretty critical, and the chances of screwing up are much higher. It's always annoying when you make a mistake and not only die, but miss making a ufo when you needed it, and pick up the wrong colored ufo piece all at the same time.

Looks like the general consensus is that rather than sucking, UFO is actually all kinds of awesome.
That's maybe just because we finally have the full game and can play all stages.
And because ZUN makes a Shinki-reference.
But compared to the demo, it's really way better.

All I'm saying is I'm glad to see that people have changed their minds about this, even if those first three stages are still the same.

Nazrin's second spell card on Normal is a little bit easier (bigger gaps between the blue bullets).

Wait, what? The first three stages of the full version differs so vastly from the v0.02a version of the demo as to make it swing from "HOLY CRAP THIS GAME SUCKS WORST EVER ZUN IS CRAZY" to "OMG WOW BEST GAEM EVAR"?
If so, I can't wait to try it out. But then I loved the demo, so yeah.

Aw shucks, I sightread Normal and gameover'd on Hizawhatserface's last card. She's got some pretty tough attacks, even on normal. It will be interesting to see what she's like on lunatic.
So yeah, I'm having trouble enjoying the game because I'm getting some really annoying slowdown in a lot of parts (like, I dunno, THE ENTIRETY OF STAGE 4). My game slows down to about 52-55 fps a lot of the time. Surprisingly, it makes things a LOT harder than they should be since along with the slowdown comes copious amounts of input lag. Well, time to screw around with configuration settings.

Well, it seems like no-one's tried lunatic atm, so don't get your hopes up just yet. :V I will say that Normal seems pretty good (or it will once I fix the lag), and some of the attacks were quite cleverly done. Also, the stage 4/5/6 themes are all freaking brilliant (stage 6 reminds me of Donkey Kong, and I have no idea why...).

Damn, Marisa A's options are too bright that sometimes they overlap with the bullet, making it's way too hard to see bullet's direction, especially in stage 5/6.

Minamitsu Murasa, Toramaru Shou, Hijiri Byakuren, Houjuu Nue are correct.
Just check the Touhou wiki. Under each character's page, there is omake part with Japanese text. Read it if you can.

So as I'm getting the game, I'm watching the videos on Youtube.
So far I watched stage 4, and damn I love the stage theme, "Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship". It's up there with my other favourite stage 4 themes.
Now, Captain Minamitsu Murasa...oh god her anchors...so fucking awesome...
...I can't say the same for her theme though. I guess I'll let it grow on me anyways.
Also, HOLY SHIT NAZRIN RETURNS AS STAGE 5 MIDBOSS! HOLY SHIT YES!

I, for one, love the feeling of getting to a particular stage for the very first time - that edge-of-your-seat feeling, leaning close to the monitor, fingers poised, unblinking eyes open, heart pounding, silly grin frozen on my face as I think "Ooh, nice music ... ahh, pretty background ... OK, so far so good with the fairies here OH HAI MIDBOSS ... hm, alright, well let's see what- WOW! Whoah, that was pretty damn close ... Alright, alright ... Whew! OK, here we go ... grazegrazegraze ... YEEEEE! STAGE BOSS! Nice hat, heh ... Alright, this doesn't seem to bad really, kind reminds me of- WTF WTFWTFWTFWTFWTF!!! ... Wow, holy crap, ok this could be- ARGH! dammit alright relax I mean how spellcards could there- DAMMIT ... ah well, yes, Continue ..."
Anyways, I gotta say I'm glad I practiced the demo repeatedly because I got to see ANCHORS AWEIGH and CURLING ORANGE LASERS. Also, did anyone else notice that in the early part of Stage 4, if you have even just one red or green UFO, you get a 1UP or a free bomb dropped on you, respectively, seemingly out of nowhere? Haven't tried what happens if you're going for blue UFOs because frankly I avoid them
and that also, mercifully ZUN has now let us save replays after taking continues

You get attacked by a swirling vortex of doom (the extra stage boss?) in stage 4. If you die or bomb on it's attacks, it drops you a bomb. If you clear all the attacks, you get an extra life. The vortex makes a reappearance just before the boss of stage 6. If you clear it there, you get a yellow full power up. If you bomb or die on it's attacks, you only get a red powerup worth 100 small power ups. At least that's how I think it works.

And you are correct. This game is even more atmospheric than SA.
'Took a look through the character bios. This actually looks more interesting than usual, considering the story thus pits youkai hunters vs. youkai advocates. I like Nue's part of the storyline (basically, screwing with everyone for the fun of it).
Also, Stages 5 and 6 are set in Makai. Shinki is 100% overwritten. We can deny Mystic Square ever existed now

Yea, the "miniboss" on stage 6 throws bajillions of point items if you have full power when it goes away. I dont quite get why it gives you a Fullpower items sometimes and other times it just gives you a big power item.

Fascinating. So it was just by pure coincidence that I had one red UFO when I got the extra life and one green UFO when I got the extra bomb. Good to know, thanks!
