Touhou Fugyouseki is an SRPG from Kamo, released at Comiket 83.
The wiki page is pretty well fleshed out and is available here (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Fugyouseki). A random youtube video showing gameplay and entering a gap to recruit Cirno is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29QY312PpzY).
The files are cracked. There are two files with a large number of text strings, but much of the ingame text appears in the images. There's some issues with text display, especially with the small text windows available for stage descriptions, but overflowing English text is better than Japanese.
I'd like to see this translated, and there isn't much text to translate. A small portion of the text has been translated, and I've done a tiny bit of image editing, but there's no real dedicated translator or image editor. My skills aren't nearly good enough to clean a lot of the images, and my choice of fonts is probably lacking. There's a sample of my work (and also a proof of concept) here: http://i.imgur.com/p9wIcuX.png
http://www.mediafire.com/?0p8zsd22whz2vdv
Here's all the images with text and two text files. There might be a little bit of text hiding in the executable, but that can be found as the final step. I've included the handful of images I've cleaned and set (as gimp files), but I can't comment on how good of a job I did. Item and Unit should be fine, at least.
Anyone willing to put some time into this? There isn't very much text, and I don't think the image editing would be bad for someone that actually knows what they're doing.
-
Never heard of this game, looks pretty cool though! I cant translate but i can /support by voicing interest if that matters =p
-
Hmm.. I'm going to have a look and see what I can do.
-
Can't help with translating, I'm afraid, but I'm interested in a patch being made.
-
With regards to the text files, do we know anything about character limits? Just by counting the characters before (what I assume are) line breaks in the text document, it looks like the limit is 10 characters...which is pretty restrictive. Knowing that now would be super helpful for those who end up editing it into the game later.
Overall, it looks pretty doable. I'll chip in to help with the translations, unfortunately I have no experience with Image Editing and such.
If you (or anyone else) feels like organizing something serious to get this done, give me a shout and we can figure things out. Until then, I'm just going to work my way through STATIONED.txt as the mood strikes me.

For dialogue, I'd say about 39 characters will fit comfortably. Image (http://i.imgur.com/6YpcigO.jpg). A good portion of the text is in this bubble form; all of adv.txt, all the crit, area attack, counter, etc messages in stationed.
Images are a lot more restrictive. Image descriptions look like 21 characters. Image (http://i.imgur.com/KUNfsur.jpg).
For dungeon names and descriptions, don't even bother. The text window here is ridiculously small, so it's downright impossible to fit all the necessary text in. It overflows, but is at least still readable and better than nothing. I can try to do some cleanup to make it look a little prettier, but unless I stumble upon a way to enlarge the stage selection window, there's no chance of text properly fitting there.
Image (http://i.imgur.com/5aNAOGF.jpg). Seriously. The top-right text area is ten characters wide.
If you (or anyone else) feels like organizing something serious to get this done, give me a shout and we can figure things out.
Thanks. I'm serious about getting this done, but without a dedicated image editor I won't be able to get far with my meagre skills. Item and Unit are already done, and I could easily do Music if I had translations. Plus at least part of the Console images. But beyond that I won't be able to accomplish much. Certainly better than nothing though, especially since the text shouldn't be a problem outside of translation.
-
I thought Pooshlmer was already translating this.
-
I think he's from... y'know... there. <_< The last image on his post also appeared on Pooshlmer.
TC, if you're the same guy attempting to hack the thing, I wish you the best.
-
Yes, I'm the same guy from Poosh. The hacking is pretty much done, it's just that there hasn't been a dedicated translator or image editor. One guy did a few things, e.g. most of the item descriptions, but I don't think he knows enough Japanese to do a full translation.
-
I'll assume you're talking about me and I'll respond by saying that I pretty much just machine translated the item descriptions and names and made them sound like something you would say in English. So unless you want me to translate the rest of the game in the same way, I can't help.
Marisa's Hat and 1-up Block descriptions were left untranslated because they didn't make any sense machine translated.

Oh, I thought that was Omonomous that made those translations, oops. I was referring to him, and he does seem to have some level of knowledge judging by his wiki edits.
-
Currently at 710/843 lines in STATIONED.txt (not including what was already translated by someone else), I figure as far as raw text translations go, finishing that should make the game more or less playable with no knowledge of Japanese.
I looked briefly over the ADV.txt and the images, ADV can obviously wait since it's just story, but I'm not sure which images are the most relevant for someone trying to play the game. I'll probably do the music page soon because its short and relatively easy, but other then that, if there are any requests as to which images being translated first would be most helpful, I'll put that at the top of my list.
As far as character limits...yeah, gave up rather instantly on those mission descriptions. My next job is to go through the item descriptions, so I'll do my best to respect the limits there. I'll go over all the quotes and such when I'm done to try and make sure everything conforms, so there shouldn't be TOO much work for you when you put them back into the game. I hope.
-
The most important things to be translated are menu options, item descriptions, and character stat cards. While everything can be figured out just by playing, these are really the only things the player needs to know.

For helping someone play, the console set is definitely the most important. That's where all the buttons for the menu and such are.
But yeah, I'd start with music and title. Title is also helpful, since it could stop someone from accidentally wiping out their save data. Music is also pretty short, and it's one of the few images I can actually edit in myself with no real problem. Thanks.
-
Wow Touhou Dofus, if you need some help with translation I can help a bit too but I don't like to go inside the text files directly. If you can post the text on Wiki like Concealed the Conclusion post on wiki I'd be happy :)
-
So here's my first batch of translations.
STATIONED.txt is done.
All images are translated and awaiting editing.
ADV.txt is untouched.
I attached the file as a 7zip archive to hold it all together, I would have done .rar but apparently 7zip only allows you to extract RARs, not make them!
If there's anything missing or you have any questions, please let me know!

CONSOLE2
The sideways text in CONSOLE2 is 大暴れ(Rampage)
Time Control stops countdowns from both Treasure Chests and Sheep Traps.
会心支援 should be something along the lines of 'Critical Support', 会心の一撃 being a long-standing term for 'critical hit'.
MUSIC0
龍華, any reasons for using Lungwa over Ryuuge?
疑萃暗鬼 originates from 疑心生暗鬼, which roughly means 'Suspicions create demons'. If that helps any.
STATIONED
1561 : 現実逃避のバク is 'Tapir of Escapism', or something like that.
1574 : 妄想主義のバ, 'Tapir of Delusionism' might be better to match with 'Tapir of Realism', unless Delusionism isn't a word?
I don't know if it's just me, but Average sounds rather 'scientific' compared to other modifiers.

I picked Lungwa because that's the name that came up when I google searched for the place. Switched to Ryuge because it sounds more Japanese, though I'm not sure if that's really a good reason to switch it lol.
As for the second one, its helpful, but I'm still not 100% how to deal with it xD Right now I have something like 'Suspicion Demon's Travelling Song,' but I'm still not really satisfied with that.

Changed to Escapism.
Delusionism isn't a word at all (though there were 3280 hits on google for it!), so if the change needed to be made I'd probably opt towars Tapir of Reality vs Tapir of Delusion. To be completely honest it sounds fine to me the way it is now, but if other people disagree it can be changed.
I think it was named Average Tapir to fit in with all the other 'Average' units, but that just begs the question as to why all of them have that name...I would probably be in favour of changing all 'Average' units to 'Normal,' so you have 'Normal Tapir' and 'Normal Fairy' and etc, but that's entirely opinion based, so I'll wait for opinions before changing that.

Thanks!

I edited in most of the text to music, nowloading, and title. I did not do the three sideways images in music, because I can't find a way to rotate text while still making it fully editable. A lot of the text simply did not fit into the music boxes, but I have no idea how to fix those without making it unreadable. If nothing else, (most of) the text is in place for someone that actually knows what they're doing.
I've made some changes to stationed.txt, which is also in the archive. I changed the tapir names to match what's currently on the wiki; I have no idea if those are the best names, but I'd rather be consistent. There's a big discussion on the names here: http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Talk:Touhou_Fugyouseki/Enemies#Tapir_Names
Character names were changed to <given name> <family name>
I added a bunch of linefeeds to the stage descriptions. This was done without actually looking at them in-game; I just threw in a bunch of \ns.
Changed the Koakuma-type enemies from "Small Demon" to "Little devil", mostly because I just prefer that translation of her name.
Finally; I missed one of the images. There's a single bit of text in the png I included in that archive. It shows up over a character's head when marking them for retreat. Could you translate that? Hopefully to something short.

Rotate the image instead and then rotate it back afterwords?

'Retreat' or 'Retreating' is what it literally translates to. If you need something shorter then that...can't think of any fitting synonyms that are shorter then that :x
EDIT: Oh hey I just noticed a huge mistake that I made in the CONSOLE translation.
In CONSOLE0 and CONSOLE1, for the song boxes, I said {原曲} meant 'Artist.' Obviously I didn't READ THE DAMN THING because it means 'Original Song.' Derp.

how is it going? posting cause i dont want it going unactive into the abyss like many other projects simply due to in-activity. THERE WILL BE PROGRESS!
(glitters and sparkles fly around my eyes)

Still waiting for an image editor.
ADV.txt hasn't been translated either, but I could at least release a partial patch if the images were done.
-
I'm a big fat slacker, so I'm only about a third of the way through ADV.txt right now. My plan was to finish it off by the end of the week since I'm on reading week right now, but at my current rate of progress...well, let's just say I'm not going to make any promises :V
-
Still waiting for an image editor.
Well, I would help if I were able to, but the best I can do is crazy 12-year-old art on MS Paint. =w=

Try Gimp; it's a very good, completely free image editor. I use it all the time.
I would like to help, but I'm also a big slacker, and probably would procrastinate at the last minute to get things done. Plus, I can't read Japanese very well. :/
-
So not trying to sound impatient or anything, but its's been about a month.
Is this still a thing? Any progress reports?
-
As far as I'm aware...
Translation of all images is done.
Translation of text is at 88%.
There is still no image editor, so very few of the images that have been translated have been edited at all.
I've pretty much put translating the rest of this on hold until we find an image editor because I've got a lot of other stuff I'm trying to work through at the moment (not the least of which being school, which is entering the last few weeks as we speak!), but if there is interest in a partial patch covering only the text in the game, I can try to finish it off.
But you'd have to ask Bane/qazmlpok if he's interested in doing something like that, since he's the one who knows how to take the game apart and put it back together.

That's actually exactly what I was planning. Maybe a partial patch will cause an image editor to emerge from the woodworks.
-
Ooh, exciting! Good luck finding one. Also Qaz, you seem so much more cheery and patient on motk since ive been more active again than back during touhou pocket wars =p. no offense, its good! I always appreciated all the hard work you and deranged put into numerous patches, but you were kinda scary =p.
-
Pack up everything I need to edit the images, I assume there are notes for where everything needs to go? I haven't touched the game since this thread was made, but I've improved my ability to handle image editing stuff. I'll have it done in a few days.
-
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2ywph3o747xq9c3
Pretty sure this is the latest. Yes, it explains where everything needs to go and includes the original Japanese text to make it easier.
But yeah, some of these images are pretty nasty.
-
So the ones that still need to be done are UIANIM0, UIANIM1, UIANIM2, UIANIM3, CONSOLE0, CONSOLE1, and CONSOLE2?
Also, what font is this?
-

Don't even bother with UIANM. The stuff is displayed character-by-character, so there's no practical way to make it work in English. It might be doable... but I really don't think it'd be worth the gigantic pain in the ass it would likely be.
Font I used is "Exo Bold". It was a free download off some site. Quick google brings up http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/exo which is probably where I got it from. However, I have no aesthetic sense, so feel free to look for different fonts if you think they work better.
I had written up a huge block of text when I sent this off to an image editor I had just worked with (and never got a response), so I'll just repost that. It details pretty much everything that needs to be done.
Here's a list of all the image groups and what needs to be done:
Item: Everything is typeset properly. I have no experience choosing fonts, but otherwise it should be fine
Unit: Same as item.
Title: Same.
Music: The translations are in place, but several of them could not fit in the available space. I have no idea how to fix that without making the text unreadable or unnecessarily small. All of the issues are in MUSIC0, The ones that don't fit are (bolded is where it cuts off):
Stickyle in the middle of a Short Night
Spring Festival on the Lungwa Temple Path
Singing Ubayuri ~ XXX Talking (Ver.Re-Rec)
Warped Lullaby ~ Graussam Unbewusstsein
Dark Suspicion-Gathering Oni's Travelling Song
Evening Ride in the Bamboo Thicket
Console: CONSOLE3 is the only one I typeset. I think I did a fair job on the outlined text. The big problem is the white text on the transparent background (with a hidden black background to make it somewhat easier to read while editing). This text is overlayed on top of the floral background below it. The problem is that the translation is too long and doesn't fit on 4 lines. It's possible to add additional lines by redrawing them on the floral background, but that image is too difficult for me to clean.
All of the other console images are untouched. I tried cleaning CONSOLE2 but quickly realized it was beyond me, and did a quick job on CONSOLE.
UIANM: It's in the archive, but don't bother touching the first ones. Only UIANM3 has text that can actually be replaced.
NowLoading: Another simple image that I did on my own. It uses the same highlighting as CONSOLE3, but I think I did a fine job.
Good luck.
-
Don't suppose theres any way to preview how the edit would look? Like, sticking the file into the program folder and it would automatically read it? (but probably not)
-
Nope, you need to use the tools to re-insert it into the game. The image files are a bit more annoying to deal with. If you need to, you could hop on IRC or something (qazmlpok on Rizon) and I can send them to you and try to explain how they work. You'd need Python and Imagemagick for them, at the least.
Actually, wait on this. The guy I sent the email to just got in contact with me. He's pretty good at this stuff, so he should be able to handle everything with no problem.
-
After way too much not doing work, here it is: ADV.txt fully translated.
I apologize for taking so horrendously long to get this done. Having to count characters and insert line breaks by hand made it really demotivating work, so as you could probably tell, I put it off for a while.
I don't know how many lines of text show up well, or how many the game can handle. I'm pretty sure there aren't any strings that go over three lines (two line breaks), so hopefully that'll fit okay. If not...well, I guess we'll have to see what happens when that happens lol.
If you have any questions, or if there is a monster out there brave enough to check for mistakes, feel free to give me a shout.

Awesome, thank you!
I did go through both files and made a handful of changes. The images aren't done yet, and I have no idea when they will be ready. Sadly, the guy who agreed to do it isn't the best communicator.
http://filesmelt.com/dl/Touhou_Fugyouseki_Partial_Patch.rar
So for now, here's the partial patch. This has all of the translated text and my partial image edits. The updated text files are also in here. The buttons and stuff aren't in English, but at least now you can get the name of that mysterious red and white girl you start with.
All of the story text is also translated, but hasn't been fully proofread since it'd require going through every single dream. I did go through the opening scenes with Yukari and Rumia's dream, at least. From my quick examination of the script, I don't expect there to be any dialogue issues though, although the three dialogue statements that use the 4th line needed to be indented a little, which looks kinda awkward.
Lemme know if you find any text display issues (outside of the gap selection stage, because that's an outright nightmare) and I can fix them for when I finally get the images finished. Or, of course, just feel free to play with this patch because it's perfectly playable.

STATIONED 2348 : Starting unit is actually a single person here.
STATIONED 2659 : To match with other translations, it should be Rinka.
STATIONED 20013 : Should be something like "What comes out is a matter of luck".
STATIONED 20023 : Should be something like "If equip this, 'll be happy". (Null-subject)
STATIONED 30011 : Slight typo at the end of the sentence.
STATIONED 50011 : Dunno, Ran-sama or Lady Ran? Chen says Ran-sama in 90011, but Sanae says Lady Kanako and Lady Suwako.
STATIONED 80010 : Should be something like "I see... it seems to have become warmer". I'm not sure about the English grammar, though.
STATIONED 160003 : It might just be nitpicking, but the original Japanese says "red-white"
ADV 13 : Doesn't really matter, but Yukari 's exact wording is something like "A youkai of my level aside, ..."
ADV 3102 : Doesn't really matter, but Rumia's exact wording is "Red-White Shrine Maiden and friends"
ADV 6302 : I'm not sure about this one, but something seems wrong. Maybe changing if' to 'whenever' might work? Not sure what Patchouli is trying to say.
ADV 10300 : Something seems a bit off, but I can't find what the problem is yet.
ADV 15100 : Doesn't really matter, but Lyrica's original dialog mentions her sisters.
ADV 30110 : I think it should be "The black and white one", because it seems to also refer the tapirs.
ADV 30301 : I'm not sure about this one, but I guess it doesn't matter in the end.
Thank you for the translations, TwilightsCall!
I also thank qazmlpok for starting up this translation project.

Would someone use the patch on the proper version of the game and upload it somewhere? would be great, and id love to test it, reminds me of widenyo, except hopefully more ...content xD
-
It's not that hard to patch honestly.... only one file is replaced. <_<'

Your basically asking for a full game upload at this point...

Pretty sure there have been no official patches or anything to the game.

Not too familiar with this community, but I'm pretty sure they have an anti-piracy policy, so yeah, you probably won't find any sort of game download, dawnbomb.

ahh, i was under the notion it was freeware, my bad

Bump for images.
The two skilled editors I asked don't have time to work on these images, so once again I'm looking for people that can handle the nastier images in this set.
Let me know if anyone is interested.
-
Just got this recently and if I can offer any assistance to make a english patch would be amazing. I am not a translator but I do have Image editing skills, but not sure if it's the kind you need. Could you give me the details on what you need and I'll see what I can do on my end.

The files and their translations can be found in this archive: http://www.mediafire.com/download/2ywph3o747xq9c3/
below is a summary of what needs to be done. I did some work on this, but my skills are very lacking. I did a decent job on the character and items descriptions, but everything else needs more work. The CONSOLEx series of images are the most difficult, as I recall, especially the stats screen. If you think you can do a good job of cleaning that, then you're probably fine.
Here's a list of all the image groups and what needs to be done:
Item: Everything is typeset properly. I have no experience choosing fonts, but otherwise it should be fine

OK just wanted to check with you real quick on the UI, am I doing this right? Changing the Kanji to english right? I won't be able to work on this anymore tonight but tomorrow I'll have more time. For the text I am using Arial, is there a prefered font you would want? I might play around with Arial bold to see if it shows up better but from a distance it's still legible.

Yes, that's correct. Remove the Kanji, replace with the English translation.
I don't have a specific preferred font, since I honestly just don't have an eye for such things. For the few images I did myself, I used Exo Bold, and I thought that worked pretty well. It's a free font I found on the net. Mirror here, if you want to try it out: http://www.mediafire.com/?t7zf5xhi47pymf7

Figured I'd post what I have done so far and hope others can help me out if they can. I've ran into some snags while editing the UI and am now at a loss on how to fix it.

This is the one I'm stuck on, the background combined with the leaf patterns is making it difficult compared to the ones below. The gradient on those run up to down where as the gradient on this one runs from different angles so trying to recreate it is a problem, I have made my own which is as close as I can get it but we run into the other problem. The leaf patterns, their color slightly changes depending on where its at and the leaf itself is pretty jagged so when I use my custom background it stands out badly. (could just be that I am seeing it up close then what it actually is but it'll bother me when I play it. I've thought about keeping it the way it is and paste something over the Kanji and edit that way but it looks terrible from what I tried, an example of what I tried is similar to what I did below.

This is for the Shikigami window, as you can see the bottom has that black portion with the description is what I wanted to try with the one above. But this one was also the same issue, the bottom portion has so much detail and changes that copy and pasting over the kanji made it impossible for me to edit and I chose the easy way and covered it up. So if anyone has any idea what I can do to make this easier and keep that authentic look, then by all means tell me, I'd like to be able to finish this soon before work gets too busy.
Also for those who are reading this which one do you like better? The think outline or the thick outline? Again I'm trying to keep it authentic.

Oh hey, this is still being worked on? Holy crap.
Uhh... for the shikigami window it honestly looks fine to me, personally. As for the outline for the text, uh... while the thick outline is authentic, there is something... off about it in regards to English text. The thin outline looks just sliiiightly better. Just slightly.
-
Yeah sadly it's been a combination of procrastination, work, and actually having to get the game is why it took so long, but I'm close, I just don't know what to do for the first one...
2 for 2 on thin outline.

Just to update for people but the UI is done for as much as I possibly can. Some kanji is either much smaller then then the English words or a few others but the menus are navigable. I feel bad for even bring this up considering I did take a long stupid year to finish it but just wanted to let people know.
-
I know how you feel, hopefully it'll get put to use eventually. But I imagine other people capable of working on translation patches are just too busy with touhou laby 2 or something atm.
-
That's fine, just uh... where is it? 0.0;
-
Qazmlpok has it, and I know that they are also working on labyrinths translation.
Here's a link to a few images of it used. http://m.imgur.com/bxwnoqp,7uVboS6,AqmPJD2,9qv2IpX,RPnFAr7,IioQoaL

But wait, if you've been able to get it inserted, isn't it possible just to release the edited DATA00 file, or is there something else to it that needs to wait before it can be released? I'm sorry for the questions, I'm just confused about there being, at least what I can see in those screenshots, a finished patch ready to go just not linked to or something.
-
ok, here's the patch.

I'm going to be honest. I haven't tested this. I don't know anyone with a fresh copy of the game, and don't want to try to find my original copy. You do need the original data archive for this; I posted an early version of DATA00.PAC, so make sure you delete that and revert if any of the game is already in English. Pretty sure I never changed the executable, so the patch is just for that one file.
It probably works, but if it doesn't, complain at me and I'll fix it.

I got a infinite black screen ( ver 1.0 ) . The program is still running and I don't have craches.
-
Mine seemed to work perfectly fine, not sure what could cause that...
-
Can you give me your version of the game ? Mine is 1.0.0.0
Else I will try to patch elsewhere .
-
1.0.0.0. To my knowledge, there are no official patches for the game.
Did the game work without applying the patch?
-
Well I had to reinstall mine since I deleted the wrong file, oddly I still had my save file... not sure how that happened.

This occurs on running the patch, and attempting to run the game afterwards results in the black screen.
EDIT: Looking at it carefully, it seems to heavily reduce the file size of the original DATA00.PAC file. I don't know why this is the case.
SECOND EDIT: Okay, it seems to only happen if you attempt to install over it while the .orig file is not correct. I accidentally did it over the partial patch, which meant the .orig file itself was causing problems. It's all good now.

Tested and confirmed.
You need to do the patch on a v1.0.0.0 game full jap ver.
-
OK as long as it works now, the read me file talks about issues patching the English patch but didn't know what it would do if tried.

i signed up here just to thank you for this english patch! it worked like a dream and i've been doing nothing but playing this game ever since. thanks a lot!
-
=) Thank you for letting us know, feels good to do something that lets people enjoy things better!

Patch seems to work for me too, thanks alot everyone!
If I have more questions/comments about the game I'll make it in a HME topic but for now, I just tried to do patchy's first dream and it says to defeat the tapir's in 2 turns. I assumed that this meant I could move everyone I put in the dream twice..But I only moved 2 characters once, my other 2 0 times. and I failed. What the crap? What's the point of letting me bring 4 people if I only get to do 2 moves? The first dream I had versus rumia seemed to give me 10 actual turns (10 each, not 10 total), but maybe it didn't and I just didn't realize (she DID lose quickly but I dunno if it was in 10 moves). I don't even know if there's any way to nuke multiple enemies in one attack too! Any advice?

Having long range can help, sanae and sakuya are both your starting long range characters. It might be best to over level and get into a spot where you can just nuke everyone with all of your attacks.

No, you need to defeat them all on the 2nd turn. So, you have one turn of setup where you can move around, then when it's your turn again you have to defeat every one of the tapir. Kill any on the first turn and you lose. Don't kill them all on the 2nd turn and you lose. It's tough, yeah.
Turn counts are always for everyone. It doesn't keep track of individual movements or anything. You move all your characters, maybe attacking, and then you click the 'End turn' button.

Thanks! I did some quick wiki research when I went to bed last night and saw that the key word was "ON" turn two rather than "BY" turn 2... argh. Wanted to edit my post and delete but I forgot my password to login for my phone and I auto login here. blah. not sure why my phone doesn't autologin too, it used to for years, just stopped now.
Anyway I haven't noticed any translation derps yet!
