Title: How many times has your favorite character changed?

We've all gone through the favorite-character thread that pops up every now and then. But has your favorite character been always the same?
Do you expect yourself to change favorites frequently, or do you consider yourself a loyal fan to one Touhou?
Have you ever struggled between two characters to decide which is your favorite?
Can you even choose one single character?
Don't spend too much time gushing about your favorite characters, but emphasize rather what aspects were/are important that caused you to reevaluate or make a decision.


For a brief while, my favorite character was Patchouli. This was when I first started playing. Being the boss I always died at as a newbie, Patchouli was one of the very, very few characters whose names I'd memorized, and she left an impression on me as the strongest character I knew.
Of course, once I beat her, I met Sakuya. Despite her downright ugly portrait, I loved her stage and boss music, the knives and the gimmick - she just became a super-cool character. The fact that she's a pseudo-atheist in a world filled with gods does weird me a little, but out of all the characters I like, this gripe isn't enough to push her off the top of the list.
Sakuya is still my favorite character today!

Byakuren, Reisen, and Utsuho have wrestled for first place in the past. Byakuren's saintlike aura stood out, but that's about her only good feature. Reisen's powers and personality are cool, and she makes a great tsukkomi-type, but I learned she's a coward. And Utsuho would be the most epic character ever if she wasn't a birdbrain.
Youmu's my second favorite, for now. I love pity/pushover characters and the ghost-half concept. Sometimes, she makes me wonder if Sakyua is still my favorite simply out of character loyalty.

My favorite character has only changed once, really. When I first started playing, my favorite was Marisa, because I liked her spunk and she was (and is) my main shot type in EoSD and PCB. However, as I got to know more of the characters, gradually Yukari supplanted her, and has stayed there pretty much ever since. Later Gengetsu tied her in my favorites list, but it's stayed pretty much consistent for the past four years.

Mine has not changed.  It started as Youmu.  It's still Youmu.  2nd favorite has recently changed from Suwako to Yuyuko though.

I suppose that, at first, my favourite character was Rumia.
This was due mostly to the fact that Rumia was the only character I knew of at the time.
After quite some time I learnt of the actual series that Rumia originated from and, from that point on, my favourite character has always been Ran Yakumo.

My first favourite was Yuyuko. It was a wallpaper of her that was the very first thing related to touhou I ever saw. I didn't even know what Touhou WAS until years later, but even now, I still have a soft spot for that wallpaper.
When I got into Touhou, UFO was the current game, and Kogasa became my favourite. Youkai moe~ indeed.
Now, though, my favourite is Byakuren. Shinki and Kogasa are VERY close, but if I had to pick one of the three, it would be Byakuren.

Yukari is and always will be my favorite character. Sure, I tend to change wallpapers of my 2hus every now and then (usually I change wallpapers to other characters that I'm fond of), but Yukari remains on the top of my list. Maybe it's because of how strong and mysterious she is that got to me.

I have Utsuho as my nominal favourite, though there are others that are really close.  I also happen to love Yuyuko, Yukari, Aya, and Yamame.

Toyo-waifu (Miko, not Watatsuki :3 ) is my first and only character that I call "waifu". It's a big honour to be my favourite character, not every girl can even theoretically become that.
Ah, before Toyo I had not any favourite character, though, Yukari was close to that.

Back when I discovered Touhou, my favorite character was Flandre (mainly because her theme was the first Touhou song I heard). Later when I got into the games, my interest shifted to Marisa, which is still my favorite character in the series.

What made me change idea? Most definitely her dialogue in-game and her "normality". In a world like Gensokyo, filled with super-powerful individuals, she had to work in order to become what she is now. She wasn't born with magic, she had to learn it.

Other than Marisa, I have "2nd tier favorites": Iku, Komachi, Suwako, Byakuren and Tenshi.

My current favorite is Kogasa (Obviously) but when I just started, it was Patchouli then Aya. At this point Kogasa is always my number one, but my #2 changes every other week :derp:

It pretty much switches between Utsuho and Koishi all the time. So much so, I call both of them my favorite character. Though they are better when as a big happy family: Satori, Koishi, Orin, and Utsuho.

Three times.

Flandre was my first favourite character, possibly because it was her theme that got me properly into Touhou (NOT McRoll). She was quickly replaced by Sakuya because of her sheer badassery and awesome power.

Satori is my favourite character now, although she is frequently usurped by Yuuka who is in turn usurped by Satori. Her theme is the best in Touhou in my opinion but I like her because she seems like a genuinely nice person who is hated and feared through misunderstanding, I can sympathise with her.

Plus cool power.

I've never changed favorite characters.  I guess it's because I really didn't settle as a Touhou fan until I had done research into everything and I became a fan just before Fairy Wars' release (so the only new characters introduced past that were from Ten Desires).  That and Reimu reminded me of myself at times:  lazy but does her job because she needs to, not very social but people (youkai) like her, very laid back, no-nonsense.

My favorites is and has always been Flandre. My second favorite used to be Youmu, now it's Remilia. My list hasn't changed much. Flan is my favorite, Remi is my second favorite, Youmu is third, Meiling is fourth, Yuyuko is fifth. It's been this way almost all the time, except that Meiling and Yuyuko swapped places over time.

Dunno. I was once firmly a Shikieiki lover, then I learned about Yumemi and she rocketed up the list to compete with her, and then UFO was released and Byakuren became a new challenger, then I got into writing fanfiction in earnest and fell hard for Koishi and the rest of Team Chireiden. But I still really, really like Shikieiki. I'm not sure that I changed my favourite character so much as other strong competitors came along and they're all fighting over the top three slots.

My favorite has changed multiple times. When I first got into Touhou, like five years ago, it was probably Yuyuko or Alice (my first game was PCB, see). I don't care as much about her now, but I can't really say I have one single favorite anymore-- aside from probably Satori and Koishi in general. However, I also really do love Aya, Sanae, Utsuho, Byakuren, Orin, Ellen, Yumemi, and so on~

I'm the worst. My favorite has likely switched to just about every windows era touhou there has been.

Its easier just to tell which girls I dislike or am neutral towards than ones that have been my top 1.
Which would be Reisen, Reisen II, Yorihime, Medicine, Reimu, and Kasen.

Utsuho has always been my favorite. However, I won't deny that I'm conflicted too, as Youmu is just barely below her. It gets to the point where depending on my mood I might call it a tie between the two, but unless Youmu gets a new boss theme that isn't so mediocre I don't really see her pulling solidly in front of Utsuho.

The mine too, PCB is the first game that I played and when I saw Youmu she became my favorite

I don't have idea which one is my 2nd, this position should be changing every second between Utsuho, Satori, Reisen, Remilia, Toyosatomimi, Futo, etc (except Kisume Lily White )

Patchouli has always been my favorite character, and likely will remain there. I've changed my mind about a few characters and liked them more/less as a result; my 2nd favorite used to be Yukari, but I like Yuuka more than her now. I also used to not like Remilia much at all but I think she's a funny character now.

It went from the Prismrivers to Youmu to Koishi, so twice. Originally, when I had only played PCB, the Prismrivers always stood out to me as that one really difficult battle, three funky personalities, and that awesome theme that was my favourite piece for quite a while. I especially liked Lunasa the most, so you could call her my first favourite character, although I've been fond of Lyrica recently as well. It's a shame that they are so forgotten about, even though they are the stage 4 bosses, but I guess that's because you can't do much with three characters that belong together so tightly like that. Overall, I still like the Prismrivers, but neither they nor their theme are in my top 10 anymore (for characters and music, respectively, of course).

So then it became Youmu at some point, I don't remember when or even why. She's just a pretty badass character who still manages to be cute. However, while she was my favourite character for quite a long while, other characters have been knocking on the door, particularly Satori. I assume Youmu stayed my favourite due to a mix of loyalty and Satori being a rather edgy character (in-universe), whereas Youmu is just easy to like.

In the end, I fell into (platonic) love with Koishi, even though she was one of the few characters I disliked (the only? meh, I'm not a fan of Yuuka). I found the "thoughtless, mindless" concept rather depressing and creepy, so I was turned off by that. Eventually, she rose and rose, though, and became my favourite character as a result.
It's also noteworthy that Koishi is the only character I liked before I encountered her in-game.

Other characters I really like are Satori (as mentioned), Orin, Patchouli, Aya and Mokou (who is my new depressing character now), with the likes of Yuyuko, Tewi, Kogasa etc. not far behind. It makes me quite happy to see Youmu, Aya and Satori back-to-back in the top 10 in the popularity poll.

I never had a favorite for most of my playing history until it became Reimu, so no, it's never changed. But lately I've suddenly come to really like Sanae as well, thanks to playing 12.3 for the first time and reading WaHH. Still not my favorite, and not gonna be, but a pretty big turnaround nonetheless.

Edit: and I just beat UFO Extra with SanaeB for the first time; I love her dialogue there too. She's great, no matter how many haters she seems to have. Not to mention, she has my single favorite line in the whole series ("You can't let yourself be trapped by common sense in Gensokyo, right?")

Alice is my favorite since the beginning, and it hasn't changed as I discovered the rest of the cast. Reisen would be a close second, and probably Yoshika or Marisa third, although I don't have much of an order about this, to be honest.
I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm a fan of her (or them), but I quite like her personality and in-game appearances (especially the dialogues with Marisa in IN).

I didn't have any favorites for a long time, until I discovered Aya. Her being a reporter, too, and the fact that she's this great blend of modern and ancient, while teaching us much of what we know about Gensokyo - yeah, that sealed it for me.

Kaguya, though, is also a strong favorite of mine as I relate to her and her backstory for personal reasons.

Now it's hard to say which of those two are my favorite. Maybe they're two different sides of me?

Patchouli. Patchouli Kmowledge.
Basically cause I share many characteristics with her, and she is one of the only who showed me that knowledge is power.
Also, she was awe-inspiring to fight already, and EX-Patchouli was even better.

I like her calm and cool-headed attitude, and how she plays, using pure superiority in firepower and strategy to overwhelm and defeat opponents.
Plus, being a Chinese myself, I am well-taught about tge five elements, and seeing a Touhou character use them in an impressive display of power is amazing. Her superiorty in knowledge and power is what I find to my liking about her.

Proud to say my favourite has never changed, though Alice comes a close second with her interesting doll-based magic and fighting style.
I like characters that fight with their intellect over firepower, and stay calmly behind the front lines.

I'd say my favorite character has changed once early on. When I was first getting into the series my favorite was Utsuho because the concept of a character wielding atomic power was so out-there and interesting, although as I played IaMP and a few of the other early games Patchouli grew on me due to her powers and profession. Patchouli remains my favorite, with Utsuho still pretty high up there.

I've switched once, I guess. Used to be Patchouli, though there wasn't really much reason for it. Like, she was my favorite Touhou character, but that was the extent of it. Just the most liked from that set of characters. I was that way for a year basically, then switched to Chiyuri pretty quickly once I actually became aware of the PoDD characters. Yumemi's a close second. I might say though, that Patchouli was never really a favorite, in the grand scheme of things. Chiyuri and Yumemi are not just the Touhou characters I happen to like the most. I legitimately like them a lot, out of all the fictional characters I know, not just the Touhou characters.

Oh, and I can't imagine ever changing again. There's a chance Yumemi could overtake Chiyuri, but the two of them being first and second isn't gonna change.

When I first found out about the games, it was Remilia, through Flandre ranked high, then came Satori followed by Koishi, then Byakuren.
Nowadays, I love everyone equally, the aformentioned five a little more, though. Still, Byakuren's at the top, don't see that changing in the future.

Edit: Thinking about it a little more, Ran's also had her time, Chen, too, then Youmu, Utsuho, Nue, Miko, Futo, many others as well. Too many, I love everyone equally, but Byakuren a little more, I'll leave it at that!

Reimu and Sakuya both started out as my faves, but they both quickly dropped once I got to know the characters more.

For the longest time, Yuyuko, Meiling, and Eirin were the big 3. It's a great combination of character depth, personality traits, and fandom interpretation that went into it. I think each could be their own main character in a different story and I find all of them very likable, but for completely different reasons. Yuyuko stood out a bit more because of her uniqueness. I've completely banked on her having a very deliberately silly yet cheery personality.

I see a lot of love for Byakuren, who finally managed to crack it after a lot of pestering from the tinfoil hat people. The more time I spent examining the character, the more I liked her. She represents a very lofty, idealistic, and optimistic mindset. There's lots of potential for her being portrayed as the nutty love freak whose enthusiasm is the bane of every straight-faced, self-important type out there. I love it.

Byakuren has always been my chosen. I like her design, I love her theme, I adore her personality traits. She's strong and has conditioned me through many battles with the most beautiful attacks. Her fanon interpretation as a total wackjob also brings me amusement.

A more appropriate answer to why she's my favorite is because she is
perfect.

(Oh look, I'm not dead!)

For me it started out with Ran (doesn't help she was the first boss character I ever saw), though soon after it shifted over to Patchouli. Then it went over to Reimu for some time, but then I became a massive Shinkitard. Hoo boy.
After ages of Shinki drooling my interests just randomly shifted around, landing on Wriggle for some time, due to my love of arthropods. I think there was a time I also really enjoyed Marisa. Heck, I still do. She has some of the most flashy, funnest spellcards and is a crazy, fun loving lil' witch.
I liked Ran for her cuddly looks (robe + poofy hat + tails), Patchouli likewise for cuddliness and magical expertise (and I freaking love purple colors) and Reimu... I can't exactly remember why I liked her. Probably her impressive danmaku patterns in the various games, but maybe I just felt bad for all the flack she got in the fandom. Buuuuut with WaHH and other side-works I can now quite understand the negative views on bitch on wheels Reimu.

Right now my favorite Touhou is an enormous battle royale between Yukari, Yuyuko, Yuuka and Yamame (the Y thing is pure coincidence, honestly).
What the first three share in common is that they're whimsical, elegant, refined and ladylike. They're women of wealth and taste, and exude an aura of dominance and high-standing. These 'regal' qualities are very appealing to me.
Yuyuko is cheerful and has a certain kindness to her being. A very warm presence. She's also quirky and oft-amusing, with her head in the clouds. She seems to be sharper than she lets on though.
Yukari is mysterious and very cunning. She exhibits enormous power and capability thanks to her border manipulation and infamy. With her sage-like qualities, she's a woman worthy of respect. However, what makes her so fun is that her powers and open-mindedness allow for many interesting situations and amusing happenings.
Yuuka is peaceful and enigmatic. Infamous and ludicrously powerful, yet little is known about her. Her love for flowers is a charming quality, and her efforts no doubt have beautiful results. Yuuka seems like someone who would be very nice company for tea time. She also of course has darker undertones.

Yamame is the odd one out, as she isn't 'regal' like the other three. Her design is adorable though, and I just love arachnids and their ravenous natures. Poisons, diseases and miasmas are also neat things to toy around with in terms of powers. Her underground life also creates a dark, mysterious quality. But at the same time she's depicted as a kind, sweet girl with compassion to others. I'm not sure which I like more: the kind Underground Idol, or the arachnid femme fatale.

I can tend to be more passionate in my liking toward certain Touhou characters depending on my mood... but the drizzly witch always remains steadfast as my true "number one"~

I'll defend Reimu from almost all hate, but WaHH Reimu, yeah, she's thoroughly unlikeable. My pet theory is that the book's written and illustrated to emphasize Kasen's point of view: Reimu, Marisa and some others are portrayed very negatively (and drawn like little kids, since Kasen sees them as immature), compared to how she sees herself, thus being drawn more maturely.

Mmm... well, I remember when I first started - which was a while ago now, geez, why have I only just joined this forum?  - I was a huge fan of Rumia. Then, shortly after, I played SA and immediately decided Satori was my favorite. I just love everything about her; her design is so adorable, her premise is really cool to me, and I love characters like her.  :derp:

I do remember going through a phase of loving Yamame and Alice, though, but Satori just fleeeeew up there.

At first it's Marisa, because she's the first Touhou character I knew. And then it drifts to Patchouli, because grumpy magician and a bookworm? Perfect.
And then Hieda no Akyuu, just because. For now it seems to change between the three, so I guess they're tied in the favorite list~

Since the first moment it was Remilia and it havent changed, I really love her :V
The same goes for the 2nd, this time being Ran. Loved her since I saw her on PCB extra stage and love her "serious servant" portrait on most doujins. (Suppatenko and CHEEEENNN are cool too)
The 3rd place is just a bunch of characters thrown into a bowl. Flandre, Ichirin, Seiga, Nue, Koishi, Mamizou, etc.

It's always been Shikieiki for me, ever since I first stumbled upon Song For the Cruelty of Hell of the Sixty Year Flowers of Sin on YouTube while listening to Rozen Maiden songs. I've only been a Touhou fan for about six months though.

Well, my favourite character started out as Flandre Scarlet. Like many, she was how I was introduced to the series! (She's still a favourite of course.)

But, as I continued to play the games, my heart began to belong to other characters. To this day, my top favourites are Kaguya Houraisan, Toyosatomimi no Miko, and Rin Kaenbyou! However, the 'favourite characters' roster has the habit of changing every few months or so.

I believe I changed my favorite characters 3 times.  My 1st favorite character  is mokou because I can relate to being lonely.  Next my favorite character changed to yuuka because she's sexy and I always want to believe there's something more to just her being sadistic.  2rd favorite character is sanae since I just like her being all happy and the fact that she is an outsider makes her an interesting character to explore.  Now my current favorite character right now is udonge just cause she's cute.  It just seems to change randomly whenever I see new doujins that has a touhou that makes me love them more.

Twice, but it hasn't changed in well over a year.

My initial favourite was Chen. I played PCB first and liked her spellcards as well as the fact she was a neko (or, nekomata, as I know now). I eventually started liking Sakuya much more not too much later (maybe 2 weeks?) for her ability and personality. Once played MoF, I started looking up he characters from it (like I did with the other games). Then I met Momiji. Ever since Momiji Inubashiri has been my favourite, and this will NEVER change. EVER. I still really like Sakuya, she's my 4th favourite, but Chen is pretty far down the list these days.

Chen: 2 weeks (estimate)
Sakuya: 1 Month (estimate)
Momiji: For-freaking-ever (true facts)

My top 10 characters rarely change, but anything beyond that mark changes pretty frequently. Anything past the 20 changes daily.

I'm horrible when it comes to having a waifu as I change loyalties as much as I change my clothes.

My favorites aren't ''single characters'', but rather families. I've been a hardcore SDM lover for a few months, as I adored every character there. (Remilia: Bratty vampire with powerful magic and strength, Sakuya; Knife-throwing time-stopping maid. Seriously how badass is that!? Patchy: Elemental, snarky and bookworm mage is ALWAYS a win in my book, Flandre: Emotionally unstable childish weapon of mass Awww-struction) . but then started to adore Yuyuko and Yukari. Then I started to love the Myouren temple. Then the underground hell troup.

I guess my only favorite who stayed a number 1 in my heart is Koishi. I've always been very interested in psychology, especially the subconcious, and a free-spirited character like her is a fresh breeze of originality in my opinion. The fact she hardly has any emotions now also adds a touching feeling to her story. So yeah... Go go Koh~ee~shee!

I use to collect some artwork of Flandre and Remilia before I really understood what Touhou was. I don't think I could have considered them my original favourites since I didn't have an idea of the other characters in the series.

After familiarizing myself with the whole Touhou world a little more my favourite has always been Komachi.
At one point Yuuka was a very close 2nd, but I'd say Komachi is pretty safe at #1.

If you want to count when I first found Touhou all those years back and knew nearly zero characters, it was changing constantly as I found more. However, I'm going to say that doesn't really count because none of them actually stuck around long enough to be a "real" favorite, more as a "I like this person more than these people" thing.

As far as my real favorites go, it was a close match between several characters before Imperishable Night came out, all for different reasons. (Everyone at the SDM, Marisa, Alice, the Prismrivers, Youmu, Yuyuko, and several more come to mind.)

Once I played IN though, Mokou immediately took her place as my favorite for quite a few different reasons. That has not changed once since then, and I highly doubt it will be changing.

Everyone else is still fighting for 2nd, and of course there are more of them now, as it was a pre-IN list, but Kaguya is at the top recently. (still far behind Mokou) Before Kaguya took her spot, Marisa was there for a bit. I'd still say both of them aren't earning a solid spot there yet, but Kaguya could stick around for a while. An interesting thought, I seem to like lots of final bosses and EX bosses. I don't really think about those things when deciding favorites though.

Favourite was Remi for a long time, followed by Yukari and Utsuho. But then UFO happened, and then it became Nue, Remi, Kogasa.
And then with the advent of 10D, Kyouko came along, making it Nue, Kyouko, Kogasa.

I guess I decide if I like a character in the first few seconds of seeing them, then gradually finetune their place in my rankings after a while.
Character design is the basis of my decisions mostly. The top three don't really change all that much, only when new characters are introduced. After the top 3 though, it gets a lot more chaotic; just a massive toss-up between Reisen, Remi, Yukari, Hina and Rumia. The top 3 aren't a ranking either, they're more or less on an equal footing. Having one favorite out a hundred is hard.

Wait, I just remembered something.

I learned about Touhou by watching an Hisoutensoku spellcard exhibition, leading me to believe that Touhou was a fighting game series.

When I got the game itself (Hisou, that is), there wasn't a lot of characters, and I didn't know them at all. Hell, I thought Sanae was a main character and that Reimu was the villain!

My favorites were Sanae/Cirno because they were so adorabubble.

When I first started to play Touhou, Marisa was my favorite hands down. Eventually it shifted more towards Reimu, and then to the Scarlet sisters. Now, it's Sakuya, Flandre and Remilia in 2nd, Alice or Yuyuko next, Patchouli or Reimu, and Medicine.
Reisen's somewhere up there too.

All joking and shoutouts aside, it all started with Flan, then Remi became a #1 favorite due to the bizarre commonalities I share with several common fan interpretations of her. (Hammy? Check! Has their own set of Morals that just conveniently happen to fit with both human and demon morals? Check! Is active no matter what time of day? Check!)
Then when SA rolled around, Okuu and Satori came into the fray.
Flash-forward to the present day, and it's now a 6-Way Free-For-All between Remi, Flan, Okuu, Satori, Momiji....and Rumia (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MyFriendsAndZoidberg).
All joking aside, Rumia's one of the ones on my list these days.

I don't give the reasons why I like these characters except Youmu.

Youmu is my all time favorite Touhou character. The reason why she is my all time favorite Touhou character is because she is so adorable when she get scared from ghosts (even though she is a half human and half phantom). I really want to hug her!

Contrary to what people may think, Rumia is not my favorite character. She's just an interesting one.

Initially it was Sanae, and then Kogasa. As of right now, however, it's Shinki, probably because of the characterization and personality I gave her in Rumia Quest more than anything.

Seiga is a close second.

At first my favorites were Yuyuko and Patchouli, now my #1 is Reimu and I don't expect that to change. Yuyuko and Patchy still take the second and third place, but now there are a lot more characters I like, enough to fill a top 10 with Flandre, Cirno, Remila, Nitori, Tenshi, Suika and Orin, and the list keeps growing, the latest addition would be Byakuren.
Other changes would include Youmu falling from the "like" group into the neutrals, and Alice and Marisa coming up from the "don't like" group into the neutrals.

Since I started playing Touhou and getting into the fandom, my top 6 favorite Touhous have been rigidly the same (with the top 3 never having changed - 4th 5th and 6th positions changed like once, when I found Sakuya to be more favorable than Yuuka in terms of characterization)

#1 Yukari  #2 Yuyuko #3 Youmu #4 Sakuya #5 Utsuho #6 Yuuka

I guess I like the PCB crew because I like their characterization - Yukari's pretty badass, Yuyuko's cute, and Youmu's cuddly :3 Yukari's personality seems to quite match up with mine in some ways ehehehe.

It seems like the more I get into the fandom, the more rigid the list of my favorite characters seem to grow. Reisen and Sanae used to move around pretty wildly when I did the Touhou sorter, but in the past few months they somehow always land exactly on 7th and 8th positions. Same thing is currently happening to Marisa and Tenshi for the 9th and 10th places on my list. I wonder if this will become my complete top 10 list that will never change.

How many times has my favorite changed?  Not even once.  Ever since I encountered the loveable half-phantom it's always been her at the top.  I like other characters too, but she's far and away always been the favorite among them.  I have a thing for swords, see, and short hair, and I often like the appearance of game characters with short silver/white hair a lot.

Also she's all devoted to her cause and stuff ,even if she ends up being sort of silly about things at times. 

So yeah.  Never changed the top, but sometimes my other high slots fluctuate between Reimu, Satori, Nue, Cirno, uh...I thought there were more super high up ones, but I guess not for now.  Oh well.  (Most of my likings of them are based on their appearances, but I do find parts of ttheir personalities interesting as well.)

I like ALL Touhou Characters because of everything they do and seem to be. All their quirks, their philosophies, the over the topness that is their lives...everything about them just does not allow me to hate them. However, I have only four true favorites.

Hakurei Reimu, Lady Yakumo Yukari, Yakumo Ran, and Yakumo Chen.

I still don't know what is about them that attracts me to the Border Keepers, maybe it's a shallow reason like their powers and how they casually flaunt them, or maybe because Miko, Demon Queen, Foxgirl, and Loli Catgirl, hell maybe the way they are all so "my pace" in their own ways. They are undeniably my favorites.

No, well maybe, depends really.  Way back, when I first started playing (IN and SWR) I liked Youmu.  Then I started playing some more, I started using Marisa more and also started getting into the fandom and Marisa just skyrocketed ahead and there's just no passing her.  Even Yorihime, who usurped Tewi from second place, has no chance of passing Marisa.

I have a few favorites, most of them haven't received any change; lack of appearances.
Kasen however hasn't necessarily changed, but, more about her is continually revealed it seems.
Sakuya has though, her ending in PoFV was perhaps her most significant change; she's become kinder and 'warmer' since her first appearance.

Well, there's that...PCB is always a freakin' joy to play, the second-best one in my opinion, but IN brought the whole two characters in one style play, each member with their own strengths and weaknesses, something I honestly can't remember seeing in any other scroll shooter I've played before. The fact each of the teams were epic in their own rights was a bonus for this one, and while Yuyuko and Youmu no doubt had the best conversations, Reimu and Yukari's chilled personas up to the end just won me over to their side.....

Welp, I'm out, got an unruly Eternal Princess to scold.

So I started out liking Okuu but then realized her character design was too busy. Wings, cape, and long hair just didn't work. Then I found tenshi, who is fucking awesome for fucking tons of reasons. I've dabbled with Aya because shes got the whole investigative persona... which I wish I had. I'm trying to make Komachi my favorite because she has such a boss power. Finally there is Kiene who is a teacher, the best of all the jobs. However, in the end I always come back to Tenshi, looks great, fights great, great attitude, best hat (although Kiene jokies for 1st place there).

To be honest I don't exactly remember, but I do exactly remember how many characters have stayed at the top for a long time.

The first was Cirno. She was my favourite for a very, very long time, to the point that people call me Cirno because I always wanted to be associated to her.

Next comes... Reimu I believe. She held for quite some time, but I believe she was the shortest of all. I liked how people portrayed her as a realistic miko trying to live within realistic means and has a realistic approach when it comes to bickering, daily life and events. Not as a bumbling poverty-stricken miko that can't hold her balance when a bag of coins unexpectedly ninja'd into her panties (although that's funny in some cases).

Then it came to Yuyuko. Oh I only loved her because she had the tragic background and fanon liked to change her tits frequently, but none of that below D cup. Also, pink hair ftw.

Finally, the (2nd) longest reigning one (next to Cirno) is Shikieiki Yamaxanadu. Now I like Eiki for her power of judgement. I don't look at her much for the beauty but what authority she has. It seems pretty cool and pretty fearful that one person could hold such an incredible power such as hers. I see her as an authority of respect, but sometimes I like to imagine her as that tsundere loli that has a problem keeping her mouth shut (Oh you, IOSYS).

Currently, the number 1 on the top is well... Koishi. She became top 1 because I imagined just how sad is Koishi's past of wandering all over the place. I wish I could know more though, but time is not on my side.  :(

My top favorite always was and always will be Shinki. That has remained a constant for the years I've been associated with Touhou.

However, I have 'added' other favored characters over the years, ranging from Luize, Rikako, Meiling, Letty, Keine, Nitori, Yamame and Yuugi. I go through phases where I really like such and such Touhou but, that interest usually fades after a while, if I obsess over them enough, then they'll get added to the list of favored characters. However, Shinki remains at the top of all else.

On the other hand, I did write Miko as being hopelessly in love with Byakuren. Now I just write her as thinking playing hard to get is a swell idea. :V

My favorite? Well to be honest, it only changed once.

My favorite from long ago was Kaguya. She has a rather nice and fantascitic design going on for her. And I was also fasincated with the Lunarians in general back then. I wanted to know more about them, wanted t understand them.

Then ZUN answered it with Silent Sinner. In which I learned that the moon folks were pretty much elitist jerks who saw themselves as the master race and saw the earth folk as scum.

Boy was I glad to know Kaguya and Eirin pretty much escaped from a life of elitiest, even though they were were pretty stuck up in general (but that was part of thier charm)

Course afterward Kaguya's status slowly sank even though I remained attached to her... Keine was slowly catching my interest but before she could take over TD came out and then I found my new interest.

Seiga Kaku

Now why would I take such interest in a wicked hermit? Well to be honest, it's pretty similar to the case of Lunarians, but Seiga's a "special case" especially after the general information about them was revealed.

But yeah for starters, I'm interested in the hermits in general. Second, it's because I'm actually drawn to characters that are considered "evil" which Seiga has been pegged this many times. She's probably the closest thing we gotten to what we can call an "evil character" though how far this will go remains unknown ATM. Finally, she comes across as an older character in my book when you consider the time she spent being a human before going hermit (not counting the 1500+ years she's lived as a hermit) But more or less I'm more curious about her in general since I want to see how ZUN pulls off an "evil character" in his works (she's pretty much getting enough attention to be deemed notable at least in the current arc)

Sure there have been characters that have been seen as evil before, but they are mostly natural at best. So yeah maybe I'm taking a gamble, but I think she might be worth it. She's already done enough things to be marked "potentially evil" but I'm just waiting for that special icing on the cake that I'm hoping to see happen. (
I think WaHH will be where it'll happen, and I don't mean what happen back in chapter 12
)

But yeah, there's alot we know, but alot we don't know about her which I'm just waiting in anticipation. Guess only time will tell if she'll stick with me over the years.

For a brief while I didn't have a favourite character even though I was introduced to Touhou by a video about EoSD extra stage(Patchouli and Flandre),though before that I already saw Sakuya and Remilia chars on Mugen  :3, but  just a list of very interesting characters among the just as interesting rest of the cast. Then after a bit Remilia caught my eye, became and was confirmed my all-time favorite with Aya,after reading Bohemian Archive,my steady 2nd.I have of course other favorites(Parsee,Flandre,Yuugi,Yukari,Patchouli ,etc. )but their positions ,even if not prone to sudden shifts,aren't fixed.

Tenshi was just a whiner in SWR. I MIGHT have liked her... but, THIS GAME (http://vgboy.dabomstew.com/other/touhoumother.htm) was my first introduction to Touhou. And in that game, Tenshi is a COMPLETE ASSHOLE!. I see her, I flip a table in my mind.

Favorites: First, Yuka/Yuuka (I have an annoying habit of switching back and forth between the two spellings. Thank above game for that.) She was freaking awesome in that game, calling out references like nuts. Her smashes are all references.

Yuka put down her weapon for a bare-handed attack!
"FAAAAAALCON PUNCH!"
SMAAAAAAAAAAASH!
"Show me your moves!"

Then there was Sanae. Touhou Mother again made first impressions. I have my own personal reasons for liking Sanae. SHE DOES A FANTASTIC SAMUS ARAN, because her whole arc is a parody of Metroid Fusion.

Then Mima. PK Starstorm, Lifeup Omega, Shield Off... Shit just got real.

When I found the actual games... Actually, the more I think about characters, the more I realize that I like Yuuka & Yukari. They both have the "omniscient troll" thing going.

Yeah, it's funny how fangames can affect your views for a specific character in general.

I used to loathe Sanae. Sure, I had my initial butthurt over how she replaced Sakuya, my all time favorite playable character, but I also hated her personality in MoF. I simply can't stand smug, ''Holier than thou'' characters. I mean, I think every game needs one (so you can rage against someone!), but don't expect me to feel bad if they catch on fire with 200 hedgehogs stuck in their eyelids.

I then played UFO and TD; Okay, Sanae is actually cute, and has funny dialogues, probably some of my favorite lines. She was a bit ditzy with a strong desire to beat up people for fun, making some sort of giggly slaughterer. The kind of person you expect to go ''EXTERMINATE, tee-hee~ <3".

Then the bomb; I played Fantasy Maiden Wars, the Super Robot Wars clone. It's still one of my favorite games ever, for the dialogues especially. Sanae is the most annoying, smug, frustrating and freaking proud character ever! And she does all of that in a ''Pffff don't give a damn'' tone, which only makes her enraging. She insults everyone and everything, and she's an overpowered invincible character until a chapter later on.

Thus, today I still have very mixed feelings about Sanae; I don't know if I want to strangle her or pat her head.

Does anyone else have this kind of mixed hatred/love feeling?

Mine bounces around a lot, but usually always levels back to Youmu. Some days I like Yuyuko more, some days Sakuya, but after a few days it usually switches back to Youmu.

How can anything be out of place in Gensokyo?

I think it's less this and more the combination of this AND Sanae being one of ZUN's favorites and always showing up even where she comes across as being shunted in for the sake of being there rather than for any clear reason.

By literally being thrown there from outside of it. But personally that's what I think makes her a great character. She's a normal real-world person stuck in a place where every crazy story people have made up is actually true. I love her UFO extra dialogue about how Nue must really be an alien, because heck, every other fantastical thing already exists around here, so you gotta have aliens too.

That's actually the side of Sanae that cause the love side of my love/hate for her. Anyway, I'll try go to back to the original thread topic a bit; I realized I have some sort of mental favorite spot called ''Musical favorite.'' Everyday, I got a random Touhou theme stuck in my head which I hum all freaking day, and the owner of this theme is suddenly my favorite.

My favourite has always been stuck on Flandre. She's become something of an... obsession, now. I was brought into Touhou by her theme, but I could never like another more than her. Maybe I'm a lolicon?

Next to Flan, I've always had a preference to the EoSD characters in general.

  • Byakuren (the character theme)
  • Suwako (the hat / overall character)

Strange to see so much Sanae hate. It's pretty clear to me that she was designed to be a third playable character that actually makes sense to be involved in all incidents (which is why she's a rival shrine maiden). As opposed to Sakuya or Youmu, who really don't have much reason to be involved in anything. When it made sense for Youmu to come back, she came back. In the meantime we can have Sanae. Honestly, even with Sakuya as one of my favorite characters I like Sanae quite a lot (although she's not a favorite). She's usually my first choice as a shot type. Her personality also fits in pretty well as yet another variation on smug. And pretty much all Touhou characters are smug. It's almost a minimum qualification for participating in danmaku duels. I recall ZUN saying something to that effect in an interview.

As for the general topic, my first favorite character was Sakuya. I just liked her indifferent attitude towards everything. After I learned a bit more about the setting, it shifted to Yukari/Yuyuko. As in they were tied for first. I just like their friendship. After DS came out and I got a bit more "insight" into tengu culture, it became Aya for being who she is. And finally, after TD came out I "fell in love with" Seiga. Which is frankly a bizarre experience that I don't know how to describe. So I guess that's 3 changes?

Err... Well, whaddoyou know, turns out my favorite character list is changing a bit too rapidly all of a sudden

Yukari & Yuyuko are still up there on the 1st and 2nd places. The problem is Sanae now: Ever since she shot up to the 3rd place from 8th, she keeps alternating in the 3rd place position and 4th with Youmu. The rest (Sakuya, Utsuho, Reisen, and Yuuka) are still in the top 8, never exchanging positions. Below that is all chaos.

I blame Aquastyle's most recent game: Miracle Chou Party -Sanae & Tenshi's Fantasy Labyrinth-... Sanae has pretty good voice acting and cute artwork, but opponent Youmu JUST RUINS MY PLAYTHROUGH!! D:< (still, gotta love dat myon <3 :3)

Heh. There are so much characters to choose from.
My first favorite character was Alice Margatroid. Because she appeared in the most games.  :3 And because I liked her backstory.
My second favorite character was Yuyuko Saigyouji. Because of her eating everything in fanon. And she was a youkai~
My third favorite character was actually 2 at the same time. They were Chen and Rin. I loved how they're both cats.
My fourth favorite character was Suika Ibuki. Because I like her behavior. And she was pretty strong too.
My fifth and present favorite character is Rumia. Because she needs more attention. And she was my first known character of the Touhou series.

Well now that Alice Margatroid is now officially my favourite character, I can post here now. By official I mean being placed at number 1 in my favourite touhou characters list.

If you include when I wasn't a touhou fan then Flandre Scarlet was my favourite character. Her wings were awesome and I liked her theme - I'd heard that from somwhere before discovering touhou.

My first offical favourite character was Cirno. Not only was her theme the chorus of Kasane territory but she was also said to be quite stupid. Her overconfidence in fandom won her my heart.

After that, Yukari Yakumo took first place. I loved her power and her personality. She was a troll with a heart of gold.

Now it is Alice Margatroid. I had a dream and we kind of fell in love with each other in it.

Suwako, Yuugi, Flan and Yuuka are constantly rotating as my top 4. I can't pick a favorite, they're all too great.   

But way back when I first got into Touhou it was all about Sakuya.  I'd like to think my tastes have matured over the years. :3c

I got into the series around Imperishable Night time and initially favored Marisa and Alice as well as Sakuya.
With time and new releases Marisa and Alice got bumped down a bit in favor of new (or rebooted) characters such as Yuuka, Kanako and Iku while Sakuya remained a strong contender for first place. My top five-six has probably stayed consistent for years now, though i never had a "This is my one favorite character" kinda thing.

I started in order from 6. Sakuya was my favorite boss character. I completely lost it (in a good way) when I saw her playable in PCB. My favorites didn't change too much even as I got through the rest.

The current list is: 1. Sakuya 2. Reimu 3. Remilia=Flandre=Yukari 6. Yuyuko 7. Marisa 8. Utsuho 9. Cirno 10. Byakuren

Anyways, somehow I never realized how cool Koishi is, even though she was always up there right below the immortals on my list. Then at some point I just started thinking... "Sure the immortals are cool, but WHY do I put them at the top? ...nope, besides *reasons* I don't see much. I actually like Koishi more because *twice as many reasons* so it doesn't make sense for her to place lower!"

Then the immortals fell into that "tied with everyone for 2nd place" group mentioned below, and Koishi is in group 1. Close behind are Satori, Okuu, and Orin in no particular order.

I wonder if I even know how to really pick a favorite character. :V The way I see it, it's as simple as "I like character X, Y much more than character Z, for reasons A B and C." You don't need much else to pick favorites. Whoever you like the most, is your favorite, because you like them more than everyone else. But even though I think that way, all of my lists end up looking like "1: Characters ABCDEFetc... 2: Everyone else... 3: wait what everyone else is in group two?"

So yeah :derp: I think current favorites are still something like Mokou > Kaguya > everyone I like > everyone I have no real opinion on > I don't actually dislike anyone at the moment

I'm finding it hard to have a negative opinion of anyone. They all have their good points.

Actually, before SA, my favourite was Yuka for a year until Koishi came about.

I used to be indifferent to Maribel and Renko but after listening to Greenwich in the Sky and reading a doujinshi called Yumeutsutsu, they became part of my top 5. Now I'm hunting high and low for other good doujinshi that feature them.

same for me, but I liked Remilia and Sakuya as well

But then, a few months later, i heard Phantom Ensemble and fell in love with it (it's like a drug). Lyrica Prismriver always used to be a cute character for me, but when i read the sisters' backstory, she became my favourite. Mainly because she is smart and plays the piano, but I also love her clothing. (It's shame she's an underrated character, I've also written a fanfiction about the four sisters in italian, it's like 40 pages).

So Flandre became my second favourite character, until I played Ten Desires and met Seiga Kaku. I don't know why, but I loved her malice and selfishness (her clothes are pretty, and Desire Drive and Old Yuanxian as well are awesome themes).

So Flandre became my third favourite character, but then, playing Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, I saw Iku Nagae. Her clothing and personality are awesome, I really like her.

My opinion of her went from "You can go die" after Touhou Mother to "you're useful, but you can go die" after playing SWR, to "D'aww... what an adorable moron... who can go die." when I realized how clueless and idiotic she was in Return of Touhou Mother. She was a useful party member, though.

Sakuya was the first character I got to know, even before learning what Touhou is. One could even say she got me into the fandom (or to be exact, a remix of her theme - Flowring Night) Months later, I finally kicked myself into learning some more info about her and trying out my very first Touhou game, PCB, because she's playable there. Unsurprisingly, she was the first character I cleared the game with (yeah, easy mode) But then I started studying the lore, both fanon and canon, and things started changing.

I have a philosophy that you can't call yourself a fan of a series if you don't like the main character. I had no problems favoriting Reimu. Her homing amulets, little hitbox and the fact that I like shrine maidens made me become attached to her for quite a while. However, the more I learned about her, the more ambivalent my opinion has become about her. I still hold her in high regard, but unfortunately, I can't lavish much sympathy for her portrayal in canon now.  There are things I both love and hate about her, putting her in a unique position on my list of favorites. Admittedly, some fanon portrayals of her are absolutely adorable.

While I was still a Reimu fan, I read an article about PCB and its cast. That's when the name Yukari Yakumo came to my interest, as the very last boss of the game. After reading her profile and seeing some game replays of Phantasm stage, my thoughts about her were shifting between "Wow, she's powerful. Respect." and "I'm going to hate her when I ever manage to even get to her." This was indeed true until that fateful day when I managed to clear Phantasm for the very first time. Since I already knew a thing or two about her by that time, my first words were: "Thank you, Yukari-sama, for letting me win." From then on to the present day, she has become and remained my unshakably number 1 favorite character of the series. Her power, personality, wisdom and beauty... I love every bit about her.

My attitude has also changed about the Flower Master of Four Seasons. I used to dislike Yuuka, but over the course of time, she has climbed up all the way to my top 5.

All in all, my current list could be summed up as follows: 1. Yukari, 2. Yuyuko, 3. Reimu, 4. Sakuya, 5. Yuuka, 6. Youmu, 7. Patchouli, ...and everyone else.

Heh, I'm pretty much the opposite of you. Touhou Mother's Tenshi was just wonderful.

Shame she got turned into a protagonist in the sequel. She shines more as a villain, IMHO.

Well, at least in the sequel, we have our tyrant Yukari, though she was still no match for Porky in terms of villain role.

Not "basing my opinions" per se. I'm just saying that I like/dislike the portrayal of certain characters in certain fanworks.

My original favorite character was Suika, actually, mainly because I LOVED her sprite in IaMP. Especially when she runs. xD There are other reasons, of course, like her overall personality and her appearance in that Maikaze touhou anime.

After that, I tried to get into the EoSD characters (mainly Remilia), but failed miserably because I just didn't get all the "glamor" of it. I still adore Meiling, though. She's amusing and I think we'd be friends. ^_^

As of now, my favorite is obviously Yuugi (Suika's a close second), and it's been that way for quite a while. I know she's not a typical choice for a lot of people (I've read people find her boring, which irks me xD), but hey, it's my opinion.

I remember my first was Sanae, because UFO was the first game I played, and I knew nothing about the series at that point.
I just picked the most interesting looking character, and it stuck.

My favorites are probably Kaguya, Ran, Kanako, and Marisa.

Just once. I started with EoSD so my favorite was Patchy until I started to branch out, then I switched to Keine and/or Mokou after playing Imperishable Night. I love their designs and think that they probably have the most interesting dynamics and story potential of any of the Touhous. If Touhou followed a more coherent narrative structure I think Keine would be the protagonist of the whole series.

It's gone from Patchouli to Letty to Shikieiki to Medicine to Alice to Youmu to Yuyuko to Lunasa to Merlin to Lyrica to Minoriko to Orange back to Minoriko to Parsee to Satori to Koishi to Yamame to Kogasa back to Merlin to Ichirin back to Minoriko to Murasa to Shou to Nazrin to Mugetsu to Gengetsu back to Merlin again to Luize to Yumeko to Kurumi to Ellen to Kana to Rikako back to Minoriko again to Futo to Kyouko to Yoshika back to Minoriko again and finally back to Merlin (I think Luna Child was there at some point too) ...

... Or something like that. Either way I'm trying to settle on Merlin, but thinking of switching to Tewi. I really do want to settle on a single character though.

I think I used to like Youmu the most but that was back when I first started Touhou, not knowing the characters much/fully. I switched once.
