Disappearing Scarlet Fantasy

Updated: 06.11.2011

So I decided to start working on this one...
All material posted here (graphics) you can use in your own projects (you can also
use the sprites I made from my earlier projects like Voile and Youmu game).

I'll add concept art and more sprites here as soon as I get some more work done.
Till then... Long post about things I have planned for the game.

Story:
Lately there have been numerous reports of fairies disappearing from the Forest of Magic.
As Reimu and Marisa are still in Makai, Satsuki Rin decides to investigate this incident.

Levels:
Here is the list of the levels, little explanation about their backdrop and bosses.
Shottype differences are separated with '/'

1: Rough beginning (morning)
Fairies have been spirited away. Who is behind this evil deed?

Enemies:
Normal fairies and kedamas, also the spirits seen in LLS...

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  1st stage midboss from MS.
Main: Hijikata Kiriko (Kamaitachi aka. sickle weasel)

Background:
Flowerfield (yellow?)... Light clouds.

2: Forest trail (evening / day)
Searching trough the abandoned parts of the forest.
Maybe the culprit returns to the crime scene...

Enemies:
Darker fairies and black orbs from LLS, also ghosts from PC-98.

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  Nameless midboss youkai from SoEW.
Main: Shiroyama Enma  (kitsune)

Background:
Grass and dirt on floor, trees on sides of the screen.
Colors depend on the time of the day.

3: Ghost house
House that was once filled with joy and laughter,
only empty notes echo trough these hallways...

Enemies:
Ghost and fairies wearing black or white.
Maybe the black orbs aswell.

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  ghost flute / ghost harp
Main: Layla Prismriver

Background:
Lots of dark color... Wooden floor, cobwebs and broken furniture.

4: Youkai of the day / night
Only when the sun rises / set, they come out.
Maybe they have the answer for this mystery.

Enemies:
Day:   Kedamas, birds and lighter fairies.
Night: Black orbs, bats and darker fairies.

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid+Main: Crimson Sky / Scarlet Moon

Background:
During day the background is filled with clouds...
During nighttime the background is darker forest.

Also during day, the top of the screen is hidden
by white "light" and during night player can see
only parts of the screen.

5: Lost (day)
In the depths of the forest,
searching for the trail that were hidden...

Enemies:
Normal fairies, kedamas and spirits.

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  Nameless midboss fairy from LLs
Main: Shikoku Hikari (tanuki)

Background:
Similar to the 2nd level...

6: Dance of the dragons (evening)
A western styled manor has appeared near the frozen
lake... The search is drawing to a close.

Enemies:
Before Cirno: Lighter fairies and kedamas.
After Cirno:  Maid fairies, bats.

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  Cirno (?)
Main: Hong Meiling

Background:
Icy lake and dense mist. Mist will have scarlet hue.

EX: Returning dream (night)
Eventhough the mystery has been solved,
there is still a long journey home...

Enemies:
Ghost, bats and black orbs...

Boss:
Spoiler:
Mid:  Doomsday fairy
Main: Reimu Hakurei / Marisa Kirisame

Background:
Another nighttime level with limited field of vision.
This time in the flowerfield.

Gameplay:
Gameplay will be similar to the PC-98 era games with some features from EoSD...
POC will only work if player has full power and players shot selection will have effect
on the levels. Collecting flower-bonus will work as a modifier for the final score.

Shot types:
Wind sign:
Bullets spread to small sector (some of the home towards enemies).
If focusing, all bullets will home (NOTE: larger hitbox)...
Flower sign:
Bullets are fast and deal more damage. If focusing, bullets will pierce enemies (half damage).
(NOTE: smaller hitbox)...

Other:

Rins complete sprites and bullets...

Normal fairies...

Larger fairies...

Small fries...

1st level midboss (originally from Mystic Square) and 2nd level midboss
(originally from Story of Eastern Wonderland)...

Concept art:

Hijikata Kiriko, Layla Prismriver and Crimson Sky.

This might be off topic, but who is Satsuki Rin?
I know she was the mystery character in EoSD, but who is she as far as fanbase is concerned?

Edit:
Basically, nobody knows. I mean, we don't even have sprites of her "appearance." (unlike Koakuma who was initially fan-arted based on her sprites) People who drew fanart mostly judge from her name/that picture on the wiki. Her fan-art is extremely low and not much people care about her (except the curious detective ones).

And that makes her such an interesting character...
It is a quite challenge to make a game about her as there is basically no real info (except the attack types and image).

Pfft. Yeah, because this is definitely a problem for the fanbase. (ex: Momiji, Daiyousei, Koakuma, etc etc.)
Still, I'm surprised she isn't a widely known character.

By the way, I love your drawings of the sprite for Rin! Can't wait to play the game when you finish it.

I'm really liking the sprites, especially Rin, but the fairies' color palettes look a little dark imo

Hehe... Of course.
Fairies are darker to fit the "dark" atmosphere of the game.

"dark" atmosphere of the game.

Eheh, I guess I should've picked that up from the first post  :derp: But then again even when Touhou games are "dark" the colors still tend to be bright.

I was thinking about it in a danmaku-visibility sort of way, as in the bright objects stand out from the darker backgrounds in most Touhou games. But if everything is darker than that's all fine and dandy :V

Also, how are you designing Layla? (if I recall correctly she has no official art either, right?)

That is true... Hmm. Need to check this thing again after I have all the backgrounds done.

Well... I fandom depicts her with long green hair and (most of the time) purple clothing, so I think I use those colors.
The dress itself will be similar to the ones the rest of the Prismriver sisters wear...

Ah, you're using that one- I was about to say that if you hadn't decided yet I'm awfully partial to this design, but I guess the purple one is best because that's the more accepted one it seem :V

That looks like an interesting design... Well, I try to make my own version of Layla this weekend
(currently working on the larger fairies).

What did you use to make the sprites? You're character image seems to be hand drawn by my observations. Also wondering if you've gotten progress on any of your backgrounds yet.

I always use MS-Paint for my sprite work... For that concept art, I used SAI.
I haven't yet worked on the background as I am doing the sprites first.

I think it is time to update what is going on...
Currently I am working on a program that I can use to test different
bullet patterns before adding them to actual game.

Also I finished the larger fairies... Posting them tomorrow (some adjusting needed)..

I don't know how you managed to do all the sprite work using MS-Paint but they seem to be working out very well.

Well, I started out by making Wolfenstein/Doom mods... Unfortunately MS-Paint is only good graphic editor to make
sprites,  walls, etc... for those games.

Okay... Now for the update. I finally found out how to fix a rather awful bug that has been
around for a long time.

The Youmu game only had round bullets as rotating the bullets didn't work right (eventhough
some of the angles were correct  but rest of them were just mirrored).

I noticed that if I subtract the given angle from 360 and then rotate the bullet, all the angles are correct.
Somehow I have a feeling that I should have noticed this earlier.

I've gotta say, I'm really impressed by these sprites- I can draw, but making sprites like these is something I really admire, because I've tried and failed so many times to get into making sprites. The midbosses in particular look fantastic

Here is some concept art for Layla (again with bad body proportions)...

Some explanation:
I wanted her to look as plain as possible, as we are talking about forgotten person slowly fading away...
I added ghostly tail to underline the fact she has deceased long time ago (of course I could have drawn
her legs, but that would have made her too humane).

Color of the buttons in her dress and the spirits floating around her (look at the symbols in them) are direct
reference to the other Prismrivers.

---

And she is not holding a wand... That is a broken conducting baton.

I like the references to the other Prismrivers in her design. It's one of the best concepts for Layla I've seen.

"I don't have anything against you, but I hope you're ready to die a dog's death!
Oh, don't worry, that cat will carry off your body, so you'll be able to live in our place!"
