That's right ladies and gentlemen, it's time for another thrilling instalment of the Annual Touhou Popularity Contest. For the unaware, the ATPC is a yearly event held by the Japanese Touhou wiki (http://thwiki.info/), where fans from across the globe join together in their appreciation of everything that is Touhou by voting in polls and then complaining about the results.

Feel free to fill this thread with your votes, your reasoning and any thoughts you have on the contest. If you're lucky, someone from Japan will take one of your comments and stick it in a results video so that everyone can wwwwwwwww at you.

Voting

The basic voting format is the same as the previous two years, so this voting guide (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,4966.0.html) is therefore still applicable (although obviously you'll be going to http://thwiki.info/th/vote9/ to vote instead). The only noticeable change at present is that the way in which you select the options is slightly different.

Voting starts at 00:00 (Midnight) Saturday going into Sunday (19th February) and ends at 00:00 (Midnight) Saturday going into Sunday (26th February)

There are three available "polls" for fans to vote in (and they're in this order on the site):

Character Poll (http://v.thwiki.info/vote9/vote_char.html) - Vote for your (maximum of) 5 favourite characters. 2 points for the "first", and 1 for the other four.
Music Poll (http://v.thwiki.info/vote9/vote_music.html) -  Vote for your (maximum of) 7 favourite songs. 1 point for each of the seven.
Voter Questionnaire (http://v.thwiki.info/vote9/anq.html) - Miscellaneous questions about the games, e.g. which ones have you played / 1cc'ed, which characters do you use, how did you get into Touhou, etc.

Here (http://thwiki.info/th/vote9/list.html) is a list of the characters and songs that you can vote for. Anything marked "New" are choices that have been added on since the previous poll. The list at the bottom is a list of the arrangement tracks.

General

Q. Why 'Touhou Series' and not 'Touhou Project'?
A. The 1st is the convention. [so "they" (being the hosts of this) basically stuck with the name 'Touhou Series' after the first voting]

Q. Can I vote from my cell phone?
A. Voting from your phone is not recommended, as the voting screen may cause a low memory error or other errors to occur on your phone.
Please vote from a different location, such as a net cafe or a friend's PC, instead.

Q. Do I need to fill out the comment field?
A. Filling out the comment field isn't necessary.

Q. I don't have 5 characters (or 7 songs) that I want to vote for.
A. Vote for as many characters (or songs) as you would like, then leave the others unselected.

Q. Can I use pictures I've drawn on Pixiv, etc. as publicity images as well?
A. Publicity is welcome.

Q. Can people outside Japan vote?
A. Yes.

Q. Regarding the voter survey questions on game clear status, aren't frame drop rates going to be included?
A. There are no plans to gather data that strictly.

Q. Will it be okay if I vote from the same computer as my siblings, etc.?
A. While it's impossible to say with 100% certainty that your votes won't be mistakenly judged to be duplicate votes, if you include the voting reason in the comment, it should be fine.

Q. I have no choice but to vote using a free e-mail address; will it be all right if I fill out the comment field properly?
A. As long as it's not a duplicate vote, there won't be any problem.

Q. Will the "highly favored vote" mechanism be introduced in the music section?
A. It will not be introduced.

Q. What is the maximum number of characters allowed for comments at voting time?
A. 200 full-width characters.

Character Class

Q. Can I vote for Lily Black?
A. She is included in the "Lily White" option. (NB: Confirmed by ZUN that Lily White and Lily Black are the same via comment)

Q. Will Rin Satsuki be included in the list of votable characters?
A. As a character which does not officially exist, she will not be included.

Q. Can I vote for Seihou characters/Uwabami Breakers characters/ZUN?
A. As they are not characters that have appeared in Touhou [works], they will not be included.

Q. The Story of Eastern Wonderland Stage 1 and 3 midbosses are inanimate objects, so I can understand why they're not included,
but can't I vote for other PC-98 midbosses?
A. Considering that they have no proper names and are very poorly known, we have decided not to include them.

Q. Why not add Nameless Tengu (a.k.a. Lord Tengu by a lot of people) and Ibara Kasen? (2nd Feb. added)
A. They have been added to the poll.

Music Class

Q. How will votes for arrangements of original songs appearing on the music CDs be handled?
A. Arrangements will be displayed as separate items on the voting screen, but votes for the arrangements and their original songs will be counted together during vote totaling. Please vote for the arrangement you like the most.
(You cannot vote for both the original song and the arrangement.)

Q. How will "Love-Colored Magic" and "Love-Colored Master Spark" be handled?
A. Please refer to the table of arrangements with different names which will be counted together with their original songs.

Q. Aren't "Bloom Nobly, Ink-Black Cherry Blossoms ~ Border of Life" and "Border of Life" different arrangements of the same song?
A. In this poll, they are treated as different songs.

Q. Why isn't the Double Spoiler All Clear song able to be voted?
A. It has been added to the table of arrangements with different names which will be counted together with their original songs.

Other

Q. Are there any plans to include the spell card poll?
A. It will not be implemented this time.

Q. Can I vote for the sunflower fairy?
A. It is included in the "Fairy" option.

Q. What about yin-yang orbs, point items, power items, or the ice on stage 2?
A. Inanimate objects which gained popularity through secondary works will not be included, with the exception of Alice's dolls.

Q. Can't I vote for yukkuris?
A. Get out.

Q. Even if he is a male character, Unzan appears in the actual games, so shouldn't he be in the UFO category?
A. This has been corrected. (Based on his appearances, he will be treated as a primary character.)

Q. Will it be possible to vote for "Init" (the ZunSoft logo song) from Lotus Land Story and Mystic Square?
A. This will not be included.

Q. Will "A Huge Shadow and a Tiny Conclusion" from the CD release of the Hisoutensoku OST be added as a voting option?
A. This has been updated.

Q. "Illusionary Sputnik Night" was left off of the list of arrangements which will be counted together.
Q. Will votes for the Mountain of Faith "Faith is for the Transient People" and its Hisoutensoku arrangement be counted together?
A. All songs with the same name will be counted together during vote totaling. The table below is only for arrangements with a different name from the original song.

Shou gets top spot obviously.
The other ones were Reimu, Kogasa, Orin and Koishi.

Characters:

1) Nazrin
I don't think it's any surprise as to who my top spot goes to. Last year's 27th was a great spot for such a rarely-mentioned character, and I can only hope (and vote) that she keeps this high of a spot. If At the End of Spring or Tiny Tiny get 27th once again I'll shit bricks (refer to results of previous two years). As for reasons why I like her, she's adorable, for one. Mainly though, she's cunning and snarky. Oftentimes she's portrayed as dry and sarcastic, which is probably my favorite since it reminds me of me lol.  She has fun toying with people and yanking strings around, or leading them towards saying something by accident. Despite the catchphrase she shares with Doraemon and her overall capacity for tsundere, I find the tsundere stereotype is often poorly done, so usually I don't like that characterization much. If anything, I like that she has a very "sturdy" or self-reliant character, but has those weak spots when other people get involved. In heated situations, I imagine she doesn't get along with anyone, and isn't used to dealing with people. It doesn't usually get to that point because of her ability to flip a situation or run away on a dime (which is ironically why she doesn't know how to deal with people), but with her living in a Buddhist temple it's probably full of opportunity yet equally frustrating. I can also guess that she wants to suck up to Bishamonten and holds utmost respect for him, and is angry that Shou, who's clumsy and foolish and personal (unlike her), is chosen as a representative. Moreso, Nazrin's personality is terrible for a Buddhist. Anyways, that's rambling a bit.

As far as her danmaku goes, her cards aren't that exciting, but all of her noncards are quite fun and stylish in both UFO and DS. Rather, her spell cards are much more interesting when you consider how they're used in battle. The dowsing rods fire lasers, and they could likely be used as a sort of battling staff (shorter and thinner than a bo), while the pendulums are used as a shield. I have fun imagining how Nazrin performs in physical combat situations with these tools combined with her wit.

2) Patchouli
3) Nitori
Both of these characters strike me for the same general reasons, but for different specific reasons. They're both intellectuals and passionate about their interests. Colorful characters in both design and personality, and really easy to work with. I say Patchouli has a colorful personality not for enthusiasm, since she isn't enthusiastic much, but her portrayed character in the games is so well-defined and expressive that it branches naturally into doujin works and it only works with her. I don't think I see many works where Patchouli isn't very Patchouli-like, and I'm thankful for that. Even when she's portrayed as fawning over Marisa she's usually Patchouli-like. Her character is so nicely defined that she doesn't stand as a character by her memes, and rather through literary exploration. Nitori is in a similar position, but instead she's a reflection of Patchouli. Mechanics and engineering rather than pure magic, working through guts and zeal rather than research, outgoing rather than introverted; but all the same she's presented in a similar fashion to Patchouli. They both get brilliant art as well, whether beautiful, detailed, or sexy. Likewise, both range wildly in body types.

4) Seiga
5) Kasen
These two I also voted for for similar reasons, but they really aren't that important. They're just both interesting characters with great designs. I hope Seiga gets more coverage in the future; her character seems overly intricate for what dialogue she's given. I'd almost say she's given more emphasis in 10D than Miko is. Kasen is a weird case. Despite getting a whole manga basically to herself, there's not much development going on. Of course, it's ZUN's writing so it's just going to mostly be crazy antics, but her whole background trait is just "hey guys I'm an oni" which was guessed possibly even before the manga started.

Comment: Reminds me of SoEW. The deaths seem to be more often because of random seeming things like fairies spawning too close or bullets from behind rather than difficult patterns. The resources were also quite lacking.

It's too late for me to submit this data of course, but I just remembered the games record your total play time.

MoF and UFO: around 60 hours each.
SA: about 110, and my copy of the score file I used for 90FPS is about 160, but the extra 50 hours were sped up by 50%, so I'll say it's somewhere around 130-140 hours of SA.
If PoFV would tell me how much I played that would probably be near 100 at least.

All nothing compared to my Advance Wars play time.

1) The Gensokyo the Gods Loved: No contest, just awesome in so many ways.
2) At the End of Spring: Such an energetic opening song, fits the chaos of UFO in my opinion. Also piano.
3) Inanimate Dream ~ Lost Dream: Composition is one of my favorites from Zun
4) Night Sakura of Dead Spirits: Opposite of #2, it's somber but beautiful in my opinion. Also piano.
5) Dimension of Reverie (MS stage 2): In my opinion one of the most underrated themes in the series.
6) Green Eyed Jealousy: The first theme I fell in love with.
7) Crimson Belvedere ~ Eastern Dream: Nostalgia. That joy I had when I finally beat EoSD Normal will never be forgotten.

I find it funny that I by and large prefer Zun's stage themes over his boss/character themes. :V

Thoughts:

- Alice #2 is a true testament to the power of Sweet Magic. Westerners should keep an eye on MMD cups from now on.
- Marisa's slipping. Sanae seems down for the count. How the hell Remilia maintains such high popularity is beyond me.
- Aya back in Top 10!
- Futo at 19 is amazing. Has any first-timer done that well before?
- Kasen at 26th is respectable.

and my prediction for Futo was right (for once), though I like (canon) Mamizou more.

I wish they (the survey organizers) had a column for <vote amount> / <first vote amount> ratio, it seems to vary noticeably (both the ratio and the list order by first votes). I imagine that my player survey will stay almost the same till next year, due to not planning to have enough time to play, and probably having other stuff to do (STG Tournament somewhere in the middle of the year).

I'm also waiting for the results for music and player surveys as well. :D

Momiji. She doesn't even have dailogue, and yet there she sits, directly over Byakuren and Suwako. ;)

This is completely unrelated, but I was just reminded of it. I once saw a show on TV about the 100 most important inventions in history. The arasol can was on there, which makes alot of sense. Directly behind it was those robotic vacuum cleaners that go around the room on their own.

She doesn't have any dialogue but you can probably learn a thing or two about her if you read those spell comments in DS. Chances are that it's about as substantial as any dialogue Hina and Rumia ever had though.

I guess my grievances/praise are the same as they have been in previous years: There's a small handful of characters whose popularity seems forced over some deserving others primarily because I've never been drawn to them and their popularity has never been explained to me, but this is countered by a number of excellent and truly entertaining characters doing quite well.

I AM laughing quite heartily over Futo proving to be the most popular of the taoists because I thought she would be forgotten immediately. I'm also laughing because Miko got very little attention, scoring below her more notable compatriots and doing quite poorly in comparison to the final bosses of the other games. The theory that final bosses and newer characters can do quite well did not apply.

Right, I've filled in the gaps and the character results are now finished. If someone who can actually speak the damn language would check 108, 128, 134, 136 (middle one) and 140 I'd be grateful but I'm fairly confident they're right.

Doing the music results isn't in my contract but I'll have a go if no-one else has before I wake up tomorrow.

So Utsuho didn't drop any. Interesting. Youmu made a fair jump too, but Kogasa stayed right where she is... Sure, I wouldn't expect her to make a huge leap, but I just get the feeling her additional appearance in TD would only be delaying an inevitable drop or something.

So it appears that TD wasn't exactly sweeping the scene, if the results from question 7 are any indication, though being the newest game it would have to deal with the other games (the older ones in particular) already being so well established within the community. It's amazing how similar the rankings for some of the games are across all three categories, however - PCB is at 1st or 2nd, SA at 5th, TD at 7th, GFW at 11th or 12th, you get the idea.

Boy Kasen has a BIG position shift...the 3nd largest shift is by 9 position (Murasa down, Momiji up), 2nd is 12 (Nazrin down)...Kasen got shifted up by 36 position!

Seriously, what caused that? I don't think I've seen that kind of spike before (other than new characters at least)...

It's because her role in WaHH is actually interesting now (there were only four chapters released before last year's contest) and her fanworks have plentifully increased since then, as more people have gotten around to reading it. She's become as much of a key character with the Hakurei Shrine as Suika previously was, and has held more spotlight over a long period of time than most characters have ever had. It isn't all that surprising.

The Three Fairies stuffs are cute gag comics but that's it. All of them combined still aren't as entertaining or aesthetically pleasing as Kasen is by herself.

I don't think their manga is as gag-y as Inaba of Moon/Earth (which is damn funny and a lot better than many doujins), but you have a point...but I do love the 3 though...they're probably one of my most liked characters in Touhou...

I was expecting Yoshika to get into the forties, at least. I mean, she's in two stages, makes a great gag character, and has a somewhat interesting ability. Also the zombie.

The Inaba manga was cuter and funnier. It was also based off of popular characters, while the Fairies one was based off of originals.

The Three Fairies are mainly a literary device used to explore Gensokyo in an entertaining way without there being any need for an underlying plot or reason behind anything written (moreso than usual). It's largely an "Interesting-Thing-about-Gensokyo-of-the-Day!" sort of thing.

Lunatic clears are still really low but I suppose that the majority of the players who voted doesn't really play the games. That would be the only reasonable explanation for having over 3000 people unable to clear SA/UFO Easy. The results of question 7 shows that not only is UFO too low but its also below TD.

But that is obviously because TD is new and gets a few easy points that way. I hope. For the music portion, I'm pleased to see the appreciation that MoF gets. A lot better than the two right below it. I would've expected UFO to be a bit higher though but music taste and all that. Characters; Disapproved.

Music: How does Septette and UN Owen manage to maintain that popularity? I don't get it, doesn't people ever get tired of them? They aren't bad songs but come on!!

Overall the fandom has improved at the games since last year. It's good enough; much better than not getting any better, or heaven forbid, us collectively getting worse.

While Sanae being 11 fills me with happiness, I can't stop remembering she was second two years ago, a.k.a. the very best after Reimu. Can't get greedy, I guess :V.

- Hartmann is exactly two iotas better than Necrofantashit. The fact that these two "songs" are perennially popular makes me lose more faith in the Touhou fanbase than anything else. The concepts of primaries and secondaries, yukkuris, YouTube and Twitter RP accounts, the tidal wave of memetics, people claiming Heian Alien is a U.N. Owen remix, and even the Mima fanbase are all tolerable in comparison to the idea that these two fetid piles of compost were ever brought to creation.
- Phantom Ensemble gets the same assessment as Immortal Smoke.
- Chinese Tea is a quality choice. EoSD's best song, and it's not even all that close.
- Native Faith is a quality choice. Always been a tossup between it and Fall of Fall for best MoF track.
- Broken Moon always makes me giggle for have a two-character name. Decent song, better than Septette and U.N. Owen, but not quite Top 20. Kinda like Bloom Nobly, I guess. Tends to get really nice remixes, though, I'll give it that.
- Desire Drive I'm okay with just because it's new and already placed this well. Liked it enough as a song regardless.
- Would not have put Last Remote this high, but it's a good song that deserves to be about 500 spots above Hartmann instead of 6 below it.
- Transient Human Being I have nothing against. Not a Top 20, but still a good song.
- I can't judge Magus Light because I suck so much at GFW that I haven't actually unlocked Extra yet.
- True Adminstrator was my personal favorite by a good margin coming out of XD so I'm glad it did this well.
- History of the Moon is bleh. Everything about Septette applies here, except it's not even as good as Septette.

This assessment is probably going to piss off a lot of people but they can all take solace in the fact that none of my seven picks appeared in the top 20, so clearly my taste in music is inferior to theirs.

Not really piss off. More like question. Sure, he has his own opinions but backs none of them. I wouldn't mind people bashing Septette for example if they explained actually why exactly it is bad/horrible for them. For example he says: "Native Faith is quality choice". My question -> Why? (Not why as is, OMGNATIVEFAITHSUCKS but 'why' as in why this song is quality. What makes it quality? The melody? The feeling?

Ranting about subjective things is fine if their rant is actually backed up with some personal arguments. Hence I hate to express opinions about which song is best/worse. Comments :
- Characters with the higher % of 1st place votes tend to have the better ranking in the popularity contest with the strong exception of Rinnosuke, Cirno and possibly Meiling. They have the most dedicated fan base making most of their points, but not a lot of 2nd+ place vote meaning they are only attractive to a certain type of the touhou fans. I can see why it would be the case with Rinnosuke (the only real male character) and Cirno (baka ⑨ hype) but not with Meiling.
- On the opposite, some characters have an high popularity ranking compared to their low % of 1st place votes. That means they are liked by a lot of the touhou fans but not enough to be their favorite character. It's understandable for Futo, because 10D is a relatively new game. Depending on how Futo's character is developped by future doujin works she could reach the top 10 next year. I don't know how to comment for Kasen, it seems she lost a good part of her fan base from the previous year but she got far more 2nd+ place votes. If she doesn't secure a fan base for the next year she might go back to the depth of the popularity poll.

I think it's as some others have said. A lot of the fanbase doesn't even play the games, and some are probably just gonna play the games with their favorite characters in them and choose those as their favorite, without having much of a concept of what gamplay should be like.
And people who care about nothing but gameplay probably aren't aware of the poll in the first place.

I personally voted for IN because I liked the slave system. I'm not sure what you're constituting as gameplay, but that was the major factor for me- being able to directly manipulate the attacks sent at you.

What did I put after that? I think, PCB for the simple "Dodging and shooting"  design that makes SA and  EoSD good and a much better invincibility system than TD, and PoFV because it's just plain fun.

I didn't consider the fighters but I'd probably put Soku over PCB if I did.

Since the music section doesn't keep track of first-place votes, I need to be a bit cautious regarding my comments of song positions.

- I'm sure Helepolis has heard enough from us about Septette being first every year, so I won't add on to that. :V
- Nuclear Fusion is at least remaining steady. Nice to see that it still holds its own among the other final boss themes that top the list.
- I don't think I'll ever understand what people see in Phantom Ensemble. I mean, I don't hate it, but it just doesn't seem dynamic enough to be that close to the top ten.
- People think that highly of True Administrator, eh? I've mentioned before that this song sounded pretty underwhelming since the beginning for me, especially compared to most other Windows final boss themes. Obviously True Administrator isn't the highest on that list, but only like four other themes beat it out, whereas I would place it near the bottom (it's kind of a toss up between this and Great Fairy Wars for that spot).
- Well, at least Desire Drive ranked higher than True Administrator among the TD songs. But how is A Small Desire's Starry Sky among the lowest of those...

Well that is kind of true. I guess it's just that they're similarly weird that me wonder about it. (Like SA and UFO should be at the top of all three rather than mid-range.)

My only real problem with the music thing is that True Administrator is up there. It strikes me as a very dull and repetetive song, especially for a final boss. There are other songs like that, but it's weird how that alone is up there, amongst other songs that are completely different.

And now I'll pay attention to the other end of the list! I'm honestly wondering how some of those songs got so many votes. Yeah, they're at the bottom, but there are people out there that actually put those on their top five? (And I just noticed Spiritual Heaven at 333, that aint right.)

Never thought that Septette for the Dead Princess is that popular...  It's not a bad theme; I simply never found it as a fitting final boss theme, not even a boss theme.  It always struck me as sounding like a stage theme.

And yay for The Gensokyo the Gods Loved being that high!  The best stage theme in the series EVAR!!!!  And Border of Life is the best final boss theme in the series!

Septette is song that takes way too long to get where it's going, and when it finally gets there, it does so in a fairly underwhelming fashion. Let it not be said that super-hyped openings like in History of the Moon, Nuclear Fusion and Wonderful Heaven are necessary for fights of Stage 6 magnitudes, because Bamboo Cutter and True Administrator both demonstrate how to start softly and build up incredibly well. Septette starts soft and stays soft for a while. I don't feel the energy. This is it! The final showdown with the crimson vampire, the source of Gensokyo's mist problem! Where's the tension, the excitement? It just isn't there. Lunar Dial gets me far more pumped. Hell, even Meiji 17 gets me more pumped, and when the atmosphere of your Stage 6 head-of-household fight is getting upstaged by the atmosphere your Stage 3 joke-character-door-guard fight, something's amiss.

The song does eventually get to something tense and exciting, but it's all over about 10 seconds long, and then it segues into some piano fun that, while nice, feels like it's just kinda there. It would be a good musical "cooldown" period from having a whole bunch of tension built up - but there was never any tension built up in the first place. Look at something like the IaMP remix of this same song - that song kicks you in the face until you tap out, which reflects the crazy battle you're having with a zipping-all-over-the-place Remilia. (It even starts quiet and builds properly! Incredibly how NKZ could get it right when ZUN couldn't.) There's plenty of tension there, especially during the aforementioned piano fun that's been transcribed over to rock guitar. I listen to the IaMP remix and I see Remilia wailing away on a Gungnir guitar as hard as she can for a whole bunch of screaming fans. I genuinely love Septette because it gleams elegance and charisma in the deadly yet calm fashion Remilia always presents herself with.
I also like U.N Owen for the same reason. A frantic, foreboding, and childish tune to represent Flandre's eagerness is truly wondrous.

In other words, the Scarlet Sister's theme songs are probably meant to represent their attitudes and moods during the fights.
/power of imagination + opinions, because everyone is always more than welcome to their own opinions, no?~ :P

Though I can't digress the fact that Septette lacks the incredible, dynamic feeling other final bosses' themes radiate with.
I guess it's just a matter of choice.

Now, my only complaint would be directed towards Desire Drive's remarkable position.

It doesn't even feel like it tells much of a story, as opposed to Invisible Full Moon or Immortal Smoke, which are basically musical summaries of the lives of their respective characters.

Basically, it's a song with a respectable core idea that simply doesn't execute. It's merely passable as a stand-alone song and a rather large flop as an atmosphere-setter in comparison to every other final boss song we've ever had.

If only people described their vote on musics like this. You see, it is so much clearer. Here I come!

I to be honest don't know why Septette is #1. It could be due to (wild guess) JP people are all classic music piece lovers. (Since Septette is a derived and inspired original song from some ancient score right?). Let us not forget the majority of remixes of Septette which probably sound better. So what is that makes Septette so great? It surely must have something to it for a majority to make it become #1 for four years on a row. hataters gonna hatate wouldn't be my style to say. I respect people's opinions if they would make them sound like opinions. Plain going: "Bawww Septette bad" is only making you look worse.

Back to your post:
You're making a connection with other boss songs build up. I agree on the built-up part. Septette has in terms of built-up bit orz style, but you got to remember this is still Touhou 6. However, it is still a boss song. You're saying you don't feel the energy for it. Final showdown being etc. How about we shift the perspective now.

What I feel from septette is dancing under the moon and being elegant (although zunfact says she isn't). It is hard to explain but I feel  as if you're just dancing and playing around with a vampire on the balcony side. Since both Reimu and Remilia start out with their quotable dialogue. You don't need a "Final showdown-ish music" here. If you consider the plot, the characters, the surrounding, it all would fit the song's energy. You're dancing and playing around.

Cosmic Mind - Emotional Skyscraper vibes pride and greatness all over as well as sadness for me. Utsuho gives the feeling it has to do: Melt down panic-ish stuff. I think her song is most easiest to read for any non-musical dude. To be honest, Utsuho's theme fits her, the fight and the spell cards. But that is about it. It has not that  "something-hidden-feeling" behind it. It is just straight-forward. Straight forward songs are for people easier to understand. Hence why people think Utsuho's theme is "the best". I would say: Yes and no. True Administrator still left me in confusion. Built up is nice, but then the song becomes "Huh?" until it goes back to the beginning. Haven't heard enough of it yet to judge about the feeling.

TL DR:
People think X song shouldn't be better than Y song or why Z song is ranked high, because they're not changing perspectives to fully observe the song. Going for "this is a final boss, it must have standard badass theme" simply doesn't work. Because that automatically leaves out Eiki, Kaguya as well here then, while they too are respectable final boss with very good songs fitting the actual harmony.

It is all about Harmony.

Septette is first again. Obligatory WHY.

Although Desire Drive at 15 is a huge success. I loved it since seeing stage 4 on the Comiket Nico streams. Most of the remixes so far are just okay, though.
Nazrin's theme just keeps on falling. At the End of Spring fell three places, but thirty is still pretty good.
Retribution for the Eternal Night just is Touhou to me.

So yeah, mixed turn out, with some very nice notes. Seeing Kasen climb all those places was very pleasing. Mamizou placing 60th gives her a good stone to leap up from when next year comes around; which is what I'm hoping for, at least. Yuuka staying in the Top 10 for another year means her fanbase has not died; so I'm more then happy with this, even if she did drop 4 places. Alice knocked me a bit; but then again, thinking back to last year, I remember the same thing happening with said results anyhow. Sanae's drop was... kind of odd too; maybe people aren't liking the green miko anymore.
Music wise, I'm not sure what to think. I've come to accept Septette as that one track that simply will not budge; so having to accept U.N.Owen as the 'other 1st place' is kind of annoying, since I put other tracks far higher then it. But this is a public thing; so I can't make anything happen just by saying it. On the flip side, Greenwich keeps moving up; which means people ARE listening to the CD stuff. Annoyed at where certain TD tracks placed, but as mentioned, can't have everything your own way.

At the very least, Mima missing Tojiko by a couple of places probably p**sed a good number of the Evil Spirit's fan-base~  :V

Last year we had Yuuka in third place, and this year Alice in second place (I know they're popular but whoa).  I didn't see any of that coming, I guess this unpredictable trend will continue.  I was happy to see Futo getting 19th place; I guess it's because she's gotten a reputation as being one of the silly cute characters.  I was also unsurprised at Kasen's sudden ascent to 26th place, but then I was like "lol holy shit".

Since you mentioned it,  it's kind of disappointing that the first PC-98 exclusive character (Yumemi) is only 65, therefore below vast majority of windows characters, including the ones with no dialogues and canon personality (Daiyousei, Koakuma, Momiji). The rest is ever lower, even ones like Shinki and Mima...

I'm wondering...  What are the chances of the results of this poll being different if Symposium of Post-mysticism got released back in Jan. 26?  I mean... that book is going to tell us more about the girls from MoF and so forth, so perhaps getting to know them better may affect their popularity?

I can't help but feel the difference would only be marginal. Touhou fanon has a way of interfering with canon at times, especially for character interpretations.

I'm kinda surprised Satori is so popular. 0_0 And she fell too. [Although that could be due to Youmu getting screentime, as well as Aya]

How's Futo more popular than characters like Meiling, Suwako, and Cirno I'll never know.

Lyrica is the least popular Windows Boss character. If you don't count Unzan. That said, the Primsrivers are a trio... but Lyrica goes solo in PoFV so... I dunno.

Kinda shocked Old Distant Hermit is so low. Easily, Easily the best TD track, and suits the 2 on 1 fight so well, same with Last Remote, IMO, the best stage theme in ANY game.

Judas Kiss is above the Last Judgement. OK... I like Last Judgement @_@

Actually that doesn't pan out. Futo is more popular than anybody from the Myouren temple.

That's just new character hype acting up, probably. I'm honestly surprised that Futo is the most popular character in 10D, but that's how it goes. Personally I find Futo a pretty boring character, especially when you have Seiga and Yoshika in there...

My impression is that the seemingly more interesting characters are less popular than Futo because they have established personalities already. Futo is kind of a blank canvas, so the fandom can sort of make her into whatever they want without directly conflicting with her canon personality.

That's why I don't pay too much attention to special abilities of characters. It just turns into throw massive amounts of color bullets at Reimu.
