Title: [Music] Touhou Piano Project - 20th Anniversary of Touhou Special
Post by: Sedrife on February 16, 2011, 11:40:27 PM
Replacing all the songs with better quality. They will be arranged at the top of the channels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm making it a central point to upload a new piece of Touhou arrangement once every week to contribute to my project.  I also make it a point to attempt songs that are rarely arranged or transcribed to sheet of music, so that I can get closer to my main objective, which is to arrange all Touhou songs in live piano performance.

Sheet Music:
Rigid Paradise - http://www.mediafire.com/?m3ym83zgm7c2jak
Shotoku Legend ~ True Administrator - http://www.mediafire.com/?xm3cu5g29kxhz3h

Note: it has been transcribed in a manner I've played (or will play) the song.

In the end, I would like to be a part of the Touhou community, and would like to contribute in any way I can that interests me deeply.  I sometimes work on translations and subbing, which you can find more in my occasional inserts in my channel other than the videos labeled as [Touhou Piano].

Update for the 3rd Week of February -  Beware the Umbrella Left There Forever  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlTYa9UHJJQ) (Tatara Kogasa's Theme in Unidentified Fantastic Object)

Some Notes:

- Couple of hiccups from switching key signatures.
- Replayed Twice, with the second attempt turning out better.
- Fade Out Ending (in a style similar to ZUN's OST album)
- Sheet Music by kkcwkoh, as always

About the pedal thing. I notice that many arranges kkckwoh finds that have sheet music are essentially just rocking fifths/octaves over and over again (and as such many people use them because they're simple). A [few] years ago that was me, and like you, when you have that pattern, you pretty much need the pedal to make it sound not awkward. Also it tends to cover up mistakes, which a lot of people tend to rely on. But as you get better with dynamics, fluidity, and just general playing ability, that pedal will slowly vanish~!

Thanks a lot, Drake.  You are very right, and I hope to improve and provide a better material as I'm doing some retakes in the future.  Octaves and fifths do make the sound richer, but it's hard to make it sound fluid without a pedal.
I do feel that my piano is generally a very "ringy" piano (sign of broken pedal?), but I'll have to take a recording of a song without any pedal (I have some in my inventory) to truly see the difference.

An alternate option would be using a keyboard than a piano, which I don't have at the moment.  I'm thinking of a clearer recording using that if I can actually get my hands on one.  Though I do like the feel on piano better, >_>;;

Oh cool, you use DMBN too?  :)

Awesome piano playing! I'm trying to learn some of them myself (nowhere near as many as you at this point. I only know how to play U.N. Owen was Her?,  and am working on Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess).

That's kinda irrelevant though. Nice work learning all of these songs, you're clearly very talented at piano!  :)

Sweet orbs of ZUN, you're good.

I was just about to go to bed when I noticed this thread. That was way over an hour ago and I'm far from done here.

I'll be sure to keep track of this thread in the future, because it's damn worth it.

Hi!  I've been listening to your songs, and I have some critique;

*  Pleeeease please get that piano tuned.
*  You seem to be mixing up and missing some of the notes.  I'd keep listening to the original songs to make sure you get them right.
*  Your tempos are generally too high and transitions not very smooth.  I think you need to relax quite a bit before you start and during playing.  Let the music flow out on it's own, you don't have to force it.
*  I'm not sure if your sheet music is 100% correct to the music.  I know that if you need help with the PC98 music, you can get an FM player (like FMPMD2000 (http://c60.fmp.jp/download.html), music files here (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/?system=PC-98&page=44)) where you can solo individual channels.  That way you can figure out each part separately and perfectly.

Anyway, you're off to a good start, please don't stop playing!  Hope to hear more soon.  ^.^

I missed this thread before, but hell, that is a lot of pieces you already played there. As was suggested by someone, this deserves to be honored with a Resident Artist Tag~

Keep up the good work, and if you can heed Momi's advice there this will get even better :3

Thanks so much for your comment!  I'm honored to have my project worth considered even a cent.
Here's my reply in attempt to start up some more conversation with people willing.

Hi!  I've been listening to your songs, and I have some critique;

*  Pleeeease please get that piano tuned.

R: *facedesk**facedesk**facedesk**facedesk* - I have no money nor time at this dire moment.  I'll definitely get it fixed this year after I graduate.

*  You seem to be mixing up and missing some of the notes.  I'd keep listening to the original songs to make sure you get them right.

R: I try my best to stick to the original.  I listen to original songs every time I'm on the subway for commuting.  However, indeed, because current state of the project is: Quantity > Quality (once a week release for at least a year's duration), it is my idea to increase the inventory, then slowly progress towards better performance.  In addition, what my brain registers are not necessarily what ZUN transcribed, due to my lack of musical training background.

*  Your tempos are generally too high and transitions not very smooth.  I think you need to relax quite a bit before you start and during playing.  Let the music flow out on it's own, you don't have to force it.

- R: You are very keen on your observation that you realized that the playing looked "tense".  Though not all cases, but often enough, the recorded playings required several retakes and repeats that consumed my time to get all the notes right as I see it.  (Mind you, I have to (want to) memorize the music within one week's period, playing it to the heart's content with enough practice while attending to university works and studies) By then, I probably succumb to a bit of frustration, and fingers become less smooth.  What I hope that DOESN'T happen (at least, not noticeably), is that the tempo is EVERYWHERE, which was probably the case on the earliest recordings.

- R: Thanks very much for this information for a know-how.  I definitely will investigate this and incorporate it into my project's future.

Anyway, you're off to a good start, please don't stop playing!  Hope to hear more soon.  ^.^

You might be able to do it yourself, as long as you have the proper tools (tuning hammer and mutes, etc.).  You can hack it pretty well if you're resourceful but you definitely have to be careful, you can easily break your strings if you try tuning them too much.

Anyway, good luck, and congrats on your Resident Artist tag!

I am hearing few missed notes and some back ground noises. Slow it down a bit, because I would rather hear clarity of notes than bunched up notes. Nonetheless, that is some fine work you have done.

Title: Re: [Music] Touhou Piano Project - Piano Arrangement Performances (Weekly Update)
Post by: Sedrife on April 02, 2011, 04:57:25 PM
I am hearing few missed notes and some back ground noises. Slow it down a bit, because I would rather hear clarity of notes than bunched up notes. Nonetheless, that is some fine work you have done.
Thanks a lot.  At one point of time, I shall have to perform major change of the style in a not-too-distant future.

I've made a retake on Necrofantasia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUx2J6_Cq2s) with a different recording method to improve the sound of the quality.

Please generously make comments on what you guys think in terms of the quality change.

Watched the video, and my god, you made some significant improvements in quality. Background noise is gone and that does count a lot. Also notes sound clearer than the older take.

Groove on, mate. Good job.

I had to giggle at your "wtf is this semiquaver bullshit" video. Basically because I now exactly what you're talking about.
As in, I knew the song almost immediately because I've done it before, and recognized it once I got past the key change. It comes faster with progressing notereading skills.

Sound quality is definitely up.
both you and i need new pianos though

Sounds really different from the original piece. Nonetheless, great work as I can not pick up any noticeable mistakes or missed notes (except @ 2:05). However, I would soften up the backing

notes coming from the left hand unless you were aiming for that 8 bit feeling.

I'm attending Anime North 2011 this weekend, where I'll bring myself a compilation of some Touhou music I've played.

(http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/306755653.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJF3XCCKACR3QDMOA&Expires=1306394795&Signature=tc%2FdS3c4yvXQIz9mJc%2FyAIVp7tM%3D)

It's basically my (experimental) first album, and it's not made for commercial purpose, so I'll distribute it on first-come first serve basis.  So it's free to download the mp3 as well from here.

 Touhou Piano -1st-  (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25161187/Touhou%20Piano%20-1st-.rar)
(2nd link in case 1st doesn't work:  Touhou Piano -1st- (http://www.mediafire.com/?f6r842fi7w2u7cz)

Thanks a lot and hope to see you there for those who are attending!

Stupid question.

Should I be crediting the music to "Sedrife"? I picked up one of your CDs today but couldn't find the name of the musician, and only the album illustrator. I googled "Touhou Piano -1st-" and then found this thread.
EDIT: The download answered my question.

Also, you don't mind if this album's in the Touhou Wiki, do you?

You're very welcome! I understand the feeling - it's hard getting something that you hear differently in your head into your instrument; even if we really like it, you probably want to keep playing around with it, right..? Links to the Heian Alien video, just wanted to point that out.
But I really, really like the piano version of that! 1:21-1:43 was always my favorite part of the original song, but this sounds so pretty on the piano.

Also, may I pretty please ask for a piano version of Legend of Aokigahara? That song doesn't get a lot of love.

Positive & Negative has just shot up my chart; the tempo of it just blew me away. ^^

And it's a shame that the track of the same name as HRtP has been pretty much forgotten about; it's a lovely track. Maybe we should use one of our votes when the next contest comes around to get it off from that spot; it needs love.

Fantastic work as always. XD

It has been such an amazing weekend on Atlanta.  Meeting ZUN face to face doesn't just "happen".  I thank the AWA staffs and event organizers for giving me such a tremendous opportunity in expressing my fandom towards the man I respect and love for making such an amazing series.

During AWA, I handed out two of my doujin albums that I previously released on two occasions: Anime North 2012 / 2013 and a Korean touhou-only event called Touhou Fireworks Festival (東方煙火祭).  When AWA was finished, I'm happy to announce that all my physical copies have been cleared out!

1st album crossfade demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wo58aQ8G1M
2nd album crossfade demo:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=431q6IJ2toE

To mark this joyous occasion, I decided to release two of my albums to the public, free-to-listen.

You can download my two albums here:
1st: https://mega.co.nz/#!LJQm0TgS!YQO_O0_AMOG7GD8MXKH-OFyBAogXsHzZ164v1igRawI
2nd: https://mega.co.nz/#!aVoWDYbY!N5oIph3dc0T8-hf-B98Gx0BfJGtpRZeDu1gAeRr2lzk

That is all for now, and I will definitely come back with the 3rd album, hopefully by Anime North 2014.

Wow, I haven't posted anything here in like, two years.  AWA2013... sure brings back memories with ZUN in America.

I just came back from Touhoucon 2015, which was just as good if not better.  At Touhoucon, I was selling my 3rd album (without booth) that I was promising to make 2 years ago.  Here's the crossfade demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4xXr-aB_es

Cool stuff, I think I liked the Alice theme the best it works perfectly with piano. Followed by the UN Owen video because of how silly the latter half looks. And then the first one, the instrument change cracked me up since I wasn't expecting it.
I do have a question though, are your hands or fingers tensed? If so, you should work on making sure your hands are very loose or you could risk injury. I take it you learn a bunch of songs and then push them up to speed to make the video, but make sure you don't tense up in that process. Simply, literally, shaking your hands out to release the stress when you feel them tensing up may help. I'm also noticing with your left hand, mostly, that your knuckle joint is prone to caving in on itself. This is harder on your hands and will stress/tire them out quicker. To demonstrate, rest your hand on a table with your finger tips in a 'piano playing position' and then push your knuckles (the ones closest to your wrist) towards the table so your wrist and middle finger joints are higher. Then try lifting your fingers. Now stop pushing and let that knuckle joint naturally curve outward and keep your whole hand loose. Now when you try lifting your fingers, it's much easier and you can even get them higher right? Try not to work against your body or you may develop some problems in the future. Keeping your wrists above the keyboard can also help.

Great tips!  But what ends up really happening is that these records take 10-20 cuts to actually get it right, and I rarely have time for more practice because I can only play them when there's nobody home, so I'm always on a rush.  (My folks hating everything that is Japanese and all...)  So I naturally get tense from those and I try my best not to show it, but I guess there's a limit.

Can't you just wear headphones while practicing though?

That's what I do but several problems:
1. Upright piano and keyboard are two different things when practicing on.
2. Even with headphone, the noise of hitting the key on keyboard is loud enough for people to notice.
3. There is only one tripod and camera set, which is usually occupied.  I practically need to steal it to record anything.
I could go on but it doesn't really change anything.

Your family doesn't even like to hear your keyboard clacking? That's pretty stupid. Since you can record the audio digitally, couldn't you just use your phone camera? Also I recommend an external phone mic if you want to record sound with a bit more quality. I got one for about 15$ that I find adequate enough.
You may not necessarily find this advice useful but I'll throw it out there anyway. One of the best ways to practice solidly is to choose a section, say the main theme section, and work backwards. When you perfect the last measure or so in that section (slowly, hands separately if need be), leave it alone then work on the measure or so before that and perfect it. Then put them together. Keep working backwards like so. You may find it slow but It's very reliable.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the key to fast fluid playing is to get rid of all excess, bad tension. Tension kills speed, it just doesn't work together. If not getting injured wasn't incentive enough, this is a better one for you. Tension is really, really bad, I can't stress this enough, like it shouldn't even be a choice. Relaxation is crucial, vital. There's a special circle of hell for music teachers who don't teach their pupils to not be tense. Don't be tense, please please, if at least for your very own sake.
