Title: Touhou Genyoubu ~ City of Distortion (v0.2)
Post by: Hyouga Kazu on April 03, 2011, 02:55:11 PM
I present to you a new Touhou fangame:
東方幻妖風 ~ City of Distortion
(Touhou Genyoubu, translates as Eastern Illusionary Wind)

This game was meant for use in a school project and has grown to something that has the potential of becoming a full game.
The current demo version 0.2 can be downloaded at BulletForge (http://bulletforge.org/u/karanum/p/touhou-genyoubu-city-of-distortion/v/02)
v0.3 WIP filedump can be found here (http://www.mediafire.com/?khgbk46oaqugk78) (It's very unpolished and contains files that aren't in the actual release. Basically, you can give feedback on things that you think should be changed in the actual release.)

Work on Genyoubu has been halted for a while, but now I resurrected it and an update should follow soon.
A call to arms will be sent to everyone working on this project. If I don't get a response within a few weeks from someone, that position will be free to take.
Still looking for a sprite artist and general artist (GUI, backgrounds, etc.)

The story
Gensokyo is in an uproar about a strange abandoned city suddenly appearing near the border.
The local shrine maiden isn't interested and the other capable humans are only interested in youkai hunting.
The fairies have already made the abandoned city their home, but a group of humans from the outside are apparently hidden in one of the buildings.
Three youkai then decide to investigate this rumor and what these humans are up to.

Playable Characters
-Patchouli Knowledge
-Keine Kamishirasawa
-Chen (Not yet implemented)

Why do the characters' names sound like the names of real people?

Because they are?

Because they are?

Uh ok then... (http://thegame.supersanctuary.net/)

Yeah, this reminds me of that.

It started out as a school project though so it began as a joke.
Now it's starting to look like a full game and the people whose names are in are against namechanges.  :derp:

Quote from: Roukanken on Hikari.

Now I've done my research on this game.
It wasn't meant to be that serious of a game.

It was supposed to be a "lol self insert" thing, it only meant to be 3 people.
Then they realized they had 6 and they decided "hey let's make a full game out of this."

They wasn't intending to create something valid, they just wanted to have a little fun.
Which is all well an' good for them.

But I have to endure this.

EDIT: Right. It seems I did my homework for the day minute.

EDIT: Right. It seems I did my homework for the day minute.

That game doesn't look all too serious though. I don't intend to let mine end up like that.
Anyway, stop advertising other games in this thread darn you.  :V

:V Simple enough.

... alright alright :V

EDIT: ... By the way, how fast do you work?

The game was alright, although a bit slow paced. I think it would help quite a bit if you:

1) decreased timer on enemy patterns
2) make bosses take +50% damage after a certain amount of time
3) increased bullet speed/density slightly to compensate for less time facing them

This makes the game a bit less tedious to play through. Also, I can help out with background graphics, since I'm pretty good with GIMP. Spriting is beyond my capabilities though.

Suggestions already suggested :V

Is there really anything that you need help with? Maybe Lucas and I can help with stuff?

Noted. Thanks for pointing that out.

Also, I can help out with background graphics, since I'm pretty good with GIMP. Spriting is beyond my capabilities though.
Since I have two people offering help on the backgrounds, I'll probably throw in some kind of small assignment to see whose help I'll accept.
If you don't mind, I'll PM you the details later. Also, would you be capable of creating textures for 3D backgrounds?

Is there really anything that you need help with? Maybe Lucas and I can help with stuff?
I mainly need help with graphics. I've got no experience with making 3D backgrounds so it would be nice if you could help with that.
More importantly, I need to know how to change standard things like lifebar/timer/events. I know about the frame but I have no idea on how to change the other things.

img\Font.png is the image that is used to draw the numbers on the default HUD, the timer, and the ... score bonus you get from point items. I'd recommend changing this image to a 1x1 transparent pixel.

The lifebar and event box images are in img\System.png
I recommend doing the same to this as Font.png, then drawing your own enemy marker, invincibility circle, and lifebar. I assume you'll be using your own HUD instead of Danmakufu's default ugly one.
I can PM you the code I used for the lifebar in some of my most recent scripts.

Having someone's lifebar script as a reference would be nice.
I'll edit it to suit my own needs of course.
Could you PM me that script then?

At this point, I can make boss and player sprites, however hideous. If you have some kind of concept art you can throw at me, I can try and whip up a sample. Will try the game itself momentarily.

EDIT: And by "momentarily" I mean "when this thing finishes downloading." >>

Concept art (cutins) is being worked on right now. I can send it to you as soon as I have it.
Title: Re: Touhou Genyoubu ~ City of Distortion (v0.2)
Post by: Chronojet ⚙ Dragon on April 05, 2011, 02:33:55 PM
Hm, you already have cutins being drawn...?
Are you able to get a cutin script from somewhere (maybe OnTheNet's even), or maybe you'll be able to make one yourself?
Or are you going to use the default KOUMA/YOUMU style cutins?
Title: Re: Touhou Genyoubu ~ City of Distortion (v0.2)
Post by: Hyouga Kazu on April 05, 2011, 04:31:17 PM
Cutin effects are quite low priority now. Character images for use in cutins need to be finished first. Then I'll take a look at what I'm going to do with the effects.
Last update was a technical one anyway so the next should have some more content. That's why I'm working on stage 4 at the moment. And lifebars of course.  :V

EDIT: ... By the way, how fast do you work?
I failed at reading there...
Usually I tend to take a small break after a release, like two or three days. I try to work on it every day, but I have a lot of things to do, including school and everything, so I won't work that fast. Let's say I can finish one boss in two/three days and a stage in a week, including enemies, common data and all the other miserable things that come with it.
Like I said in the first post, the next release will be in a few months because of exams, this release was late because of a huge school project...
Time isn't on my side for once. :V

And making awesome stuff, even! I look forward to seeing more!

I decide to pop up again after a while, and I'll disappear instantly after posting this. (Exams in two weeks, root for me everyone)
It's just that there are some announcements to make and people to reply to.

Thanks. Helepolis is also a very good Dutch scripter over here. Puremrz was Dutch too IIRC.
The Dutchmen are taking over RaNGE! Well, actually not... But we're making progress! xD

I decided to take a break from learning for a few hours to make the Hard difficulty. It's still a rough gem that needs polishing, but it's there.
The music is starting to roll in and cutins are on their way as well. However, at the current rate it's unknown if all of it will be in the next release already.

The game is getting some nice quirks, such as a custom lifebar, but the old one will still be there as well since removing it also removes the hitbox, bomb icons, etc. which is bad, obviously.
And Myuukyuu, I decided to make my lifebar script from scratch instead of modifying yours. But now it's a circular lifebar as seen in the latest Touhou games. They're cool.

Well, back to Animecon exam preparations. (As promised, disappears with a puff of smoke)  :derp:

If there's any time to resurrect this thread, it's now. I've resumed work on Genyoubu, and made quite some progress these last few days.
Even though college started, I managed to get something remotely playable. A v0.3 beta release, perhaps, or pre-release, call it what you want.
Details can be found in the first post.

Make sure to give feedback on the v0.3 filedump if you think something could be better.

mokou

I'll be sure to play it and give feedback.

Also Chen's bomb should be summoning Ran just because.

Well, if you could add more animations sprites (make it more smooth-ish), that's pretty awesome already.

Huh. You have a very different style than I do, but I wouldn't call it worse by any means. You can pretty much handle the bosses on your own, I think.

I actually have those Keine sprites, though. Uploading nao.

That's a pretty positive response with this being my first sprite. (And the response coming from you)
I added one transition state between neutral and move states. The more you add, the smaller your error margin becomes and the faster it'll look unnatural, so I'll keep it like this for now. I might do some action states tomorrow if I can think of a good attack pose.

Thanks for the player sprites. (Even though the Keine one isn't in. Yet.)
I might redo the player sprites if I ever get good enough, to have it all in the same art style you know. (You'll still be in the credits if that happens though, unless you don't want to be)

I'm not entirely sure about that since I don't know any Linux users to test for me.
Since this is made using the old Danmakufu, you could also post in the help thread. They should know a way to get it running on Linux there.

This is just my point of perspective to me the shoulder area looks to big, you should make it a bit smaller

Hmm, yea, I notice that on the movement frames the far shoulder looks off. I'll see if I can fix that somehow.
Also, funny how no one notices the anti-alias transparancy fail on the idle frames. Which is fixed already btw.
