Hah, I've been meaning to test the Straw Doll Kamikaze abuse with the HP boosting. Yessss. Now when I get around to that Let's Break I should be able to (almost) solo Hina with her. (Still need Sanae for obvious reasons, and Satori, but...)

However, ah, there -is- a gameplay thread for this in Help Me Eirin, this thread isn't monitored regularly by most people I imagine and is supposed to be used for stuff pertaining to the translation patch itself.
<mauvecow> see this is how evil works in reality, it just wears you down with bureaucracy until you don't care anymore

Thanks, I'll move it there, I didn't know about the Weekend thread.

Remember that SDK damage is based on current HP and not Max HP, she must be healed, I tried to manage a self-healing regeneration method as a way for her to always maximize her damage without needing constant healing while boosting SRGW.

I was also interested in double boosting ATK for other characters like Alice, Satori and Youmu comes to my mind. Another one that bugs out is Nitori's Chasers when using Berserker Soul + Ten Dice Sword, sadly there aren't 80+ chasers.
« Last Edit: February 20, 2013, 08:04:33 PM by Cjd2524 »

Chasers seem to cancel consecutive attacks. So, you will never see Youmu or Sakuya attack a second time if you use Nitori's Chasers. This applies to Aya's Last Word where she gets 2 attacks every time. Chasing that attack to nerf Aya down to 1 hit.

I'm not.......... and I can't install the dreaded japanese language packs no matter what I try on my computer. It always give me errors saying:

Basically it says "windows failed to copy the files" or something. Now it happens whenever I try to install East Asian language packs...

Control Panel->Clock,language and Region->Region and Language->Administrative->Language for non unicode programs set to Japanese. Restart computer, that should do it.

That message's just telling you that you need to insert your Windows XP CD for it to copy the files.

And what do you think I've been trying to do all this time?

I've tried 2 different windows XP installations CD's already and tried three different I386 folders that I got from the web, but the error persists.

And no, TheNewGuy, I can't do what you told me on my computer because this requires japanese language packs installed beforehands anyway. Unless if you're talking about Windows 7 that might be different. (I use XP)

This was likely an error that was carried over from older versions, but if anyone noticed Youmu's Heavenly Halo Slash description is wrong, it only gives MATK Down:

-> ->

Current translation is based on this: 魔法攻撃力・魔法防御力低下を与える。威力:小 (hints at MATK & MDEF Down)

It should be this : ダメージと共に魔法攻撃力低下を与える。威力:小 (MATK Down, only)

This was likely either a duplicated entry (wrong copy paste) from Strawberry Bose in older versions, since the skill description comes from 200 Yojana in 1 Slash, or there was a change made to switch it to MATK Down only that was made along the game patches, as I can see the very same error in the Japanese Wiki.

Is there a file I can check with the translated names of Skills and Statuses?, I need to check coherency, the game doesn't allow to refight bosses and this leaves me out of checking them in-game (it really needs an arena).

Quagmire description is wrong, it only indicates it Reduces EVA, it should be Reduces EVA & SPD:

-> ->

Current (EVA Down, only):

Proper is this: [全体] 回避・速度下降を与える (indicates EVA & SPD Down):

Does anyone PLEASE have the learning mod for v2.0.9? The only links I can find on the web are all of deleted versions. Or can someone help me with how I can unpack the game.pak files to increase the learn rate?

You should just update to Weekend. It has massively boosted learning rates, among other things.
<mauvecow> see this is how evil works in reality, it just wears you down with bureaucracy until you don't care anymore

Took this from the JP wiki and added a few notes, is not updated to Weekend but it is up to Zansho. If  someone is more accustomed to the wiki syntax and feel like adding it to the wiki I am sure it would be appreciated (it needs a second pass to make sure I didn't mistook numerical values), there are mismatches with the translation, Oharaibou = Gohei and such, but it was literally what was written in the JP wiki.

Damage Percent Statuses Skills         :  http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=BeYGgT5g

Value % for RES & TOL are inversely proportional, calculate using Rule of Three. Ex: 0% RES -> Ignores all of Target's RES,  Sweet Breath 75% RES -> Ignores 25% of Target's RES, Devil's Recitation 25% RES -> Ignores 75% of Target's RES

(Target's RES * Skill's RES % Value) / 100 = RES value used to calculate Success Rate (for Status Infliction)

This should allow to maximize Satori and Byakuren usage for buffing and debuffing, which defensive spell is stronger, which death skill has better success chances and such, as well as make things more evident such as Psycho Bind having a 66% Probability but Remilia only having IND 20 at Lv.99. However this is only for characters, to debuff properly one would need to know the status resistances of every enemy.

Special mention to Chameleon Camouflage, it has base 50% Element Damage Reduction for any element with land power active (Yang↑ ), but if Nitori has IND 100 (or more) it becomes 100% Element Damage Reduction, which means it gets rid of Pain Bond for good.

So... let me get this straight. For Variety effects, the formula is something like Lv*IND Effect? So, for Wind of Swords (as an example) with a 100 IND Sanae, it would be 125% of 15 (Level 1 IND 100 is 125% and the Level of Wind of Swords is 15) equals about +19 PATK? Uh... that makes it seem like attacking buffs plain out suck. What does the "level" value mean, because the way you worded it makes it seem like a flat value added to the original stat (in the case of stat buffs, at least), and buffs have a greater effect than that, I'm sure.

Varies by buff from buff.
Some buffs, like Sanae's ATK or DEF buff, is percentage-based.
Other buffs, like Sanae's RES or MDEF buff, is flat increase. (It would be sad if someone with 0 RES received a RES buff only to have 0 RES)

Do remember that one of Sanae's skill tree further strengthens effects of buffs by +50%

When comparing Satori and Sanae's group def buff (for cases where you aren't using Sanae but do have Satori and want it), keep in mind Satori also gets a degree of Variety enhance from her Id tree.

This really belongs more in the game thread then the translation thread though ^^; If nothing else, lots of people won't see it here.

Changed the description I understand "amount" seemed too ambigous. It is either percentage or a flat value like explained (Maid is mixed), Status Enhance is % based, so if Variety Status PATK +80% + Enhance 30%, then PATK +104%.

Status Level                       : http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=xtSdCtk9 [see the table at the bottom, some skills are missing]
Final Variety Status Level: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=EznD9rQi [formulas are at the bottom]

The page for Success Rate gives no examples and is really harder to understand due to this reason, besides the fact the formula doesn't give me proper results.

Okay, that makes a LOT more sense. Thanks for clarifying about the whole flat versus percentage thing (and listing all of the formulas for each separate Variety type).

Not sure if this was fixed or changed already, using (Dec-30-2012 Patch):

<->
Warrior of Devaloka (at the bottom) is +6 Turns, not +4 Turns. This is kind on the Wiki as well, I wonder if someone just half-filled Youmu's page or she got changed a lot.

Minor capslock/shift typo on Solideo: "aLL"

Can this be normalized to Magic Evade for coherence/sanity reasons (Gale Mantle I~IV).

I understand Magic Barrier is correct, there is confusion regarding naming even in the JP Wiki.
Code: [Select]
魔法障壁 = Mahou Shouheki = Magic Barrier = Magic Evade   (equivalent to Perfect Dodge for Magic Attacks)
魔法結界 = Mahou Kekkai   = Magic Barrier = Magic Barrier (equivalent to Physical Barrier for Magic Attacks)
物理結界 = Butsuri Kekkai = Physical Barrier
神霊結界 = Shinrei Kekkai = Divine Barrier

Wiki Usage:

障壁無視 = Shouheki Mushi = Ignore Barrier (Damage Reduction from Physical and Magic Barrier)
結界無視 = Kekkai Mushi   = Ignore Barrier = Ignore Immunity (*)

(*) Damage Null is disabled, for Satori's Barrier (バリア), Nitori's Optical Camouflage, Alice's Last Word, Reimu's Barriers, and any other kind of possible nullification. Only used for 4 Enemy's Skills.

Barrier gets used a lot, the game makes it really hard to not get them mixed up.

I am still unsure about "Ignores Barrier", I would expect attacks to ignore Magic Evade as they do with Perfect Dodge, however Physical Attacks such as Nitori Last Word have "Ignore Barrier", which would make no sense giving Magic Evade isn't even taken into account.

Unless Shouheki in this particular case is a general flag encompassing the 3 Barriers, Physical, Magic, and Magic Evade (Barrier).

  • What I say is fiction.
  • If it doesn't make sense, it's a fact.
After freshly patching 3.01 onto the program, it worked fine. But when I put in the english patch, it now crashes immediately after startup. I've read through the thread but I can't figure out what's going on. I'm in JP locale according to my computer, and I tried running it in 95 compatibility mode. Am I just being stupid? I'm on Windows 7, if that says anything helpful.

Edit: It seems I kept replacing the pak files with... an older version's files or something. Ignore this post, because I was being stupid. That said, totally can't wait to get into this thing. Played this back during Summer Heat but never got past the flower field.

First: thank you for all the information Cjd. It's always good to understand the mechanics of the game in detail. I'll make sure the issues you brought up are corrected as well. I have a big update for this patch in the works.
Of course I've been really terribly busy lately. Slightly on the upside patches for Summoners and DoD came out so some grief was spared there. Anyway, I can't guarantee a large increase in activity until we start getting to summer. Barring maybe a surprise translation dump.  Terribly sorry, my pace drives me nuts too.

On a related noted, Bose have announced a new game: 東方玄夢妖譚 The Nightmare of Rebellion. Apparently it's the last game of the 'omen' trilogy. Currently planned for a August release. PV here, http://www.gensoukyou.org/genmu/

...Oh my god... YES. YES!!! If this is the last game of the "omen trilogy," I'm wondering if it'll tie together the previous two games as well (considering one of the areas looked like one of the Makai areas from DoD). Nevertheless, I'm glad to see they're pulling out the TD characters and I can't wait for the actual release! I might even consider doing a blind run of that for an LP.

EDIT: By the way... can someone translate that Japanese title? All I get from ATLAS is "Eastern Fantasy Dream," and the characters 妖譚 are left untranslated.

Take your time, the work done on the patch is magnificent, to everyone involved.

Touhou Genmu Youtan (とう ほうげんむようたん), it seems to be a pretty literal "Nightmare of Rebellion"

Genmu can also by written 幻夢 or 現夢, phantasm, illusion, nightmare, dream, though I think I saw it referenced as Vision as well, which could be referencing and meaning Omen, but the English subtitle may rule it out, it is the Nightmare part of the English subtitle.

While Youtan may be referring to the Rebellion part of the English subtitle, or Rebellious, as in child behavior, juvenile, immature and such, or likely the more common usage of "Takeover", it seems to be a compound word.  -tan used for Story/Tale.

Unless it is Strange Tale, or 妖 as in Ayakashi Tale, but I am mixing everything now. Anyway I have no idea, it may be better to not pay too much attention to what I wrote.

I, myself, would translate it to something like "Strange Tale of Black Dream".

玄 could also mean 'profound and mysterious' (although unlikely), and is the same Kanji as in 'Black Tortoise'.
Some subtle meanings might get lost if it's just translated to 'Black', but those kind of things happen every time while translating.

Damage Calculation : http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=Tnjtrd0r
Hits + FAQ (Updated): http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=FYWEjYx5

The formula is too cluttered to be usable, however it indicates a few things that might be worth pointing out:

Magic has special Magnification, I think this is related to equipment (Element/Physical Enhance +X%).
Character's and Shield's PDEF/MDEF  are halved and then summed to calculate Final DEF.
Hit Probability is never < 5%.
Screen Color Flashes: Red (Critical), Green (Slayer), Yellow (Slayer + Critical)

Nitori's Chaser damage is halved when chasing a multi-hit attack with each subsequent hit of the same Chaser:

Attack <-> Chaser

Chaser Hit Order is from Highest Damage to Lowest (Spiral Pattern), do not pay attention to Columns or Rows to determine Hit Order, for some reason the game displays hits from Right to Left, then switches or alternates with Spiral Pattern, the proper way to determine order is to see the frame overlay, the overlapping layer.
