I'm using TF2's web browser ATM (waiting for a slot to free up on a server so I can play), but I also use map.csv (for the treasure list I pull the name and areaname (for overall dungeon and specific floor), and let.csv mainly so I'll have the "official" English translations for things like the status ailments, monster types and attack types (spread, row, column..., etc).  The latter (attack area) is kind of covered by the comment fields in item.csv, though, and, I do include the comments for the enemy spell table.

Added map and let to the folder.

Working through some problems, first with item.csv.  It isn't encoded in UTF-8, and some characters seemed to be messed up.

LibreOffice 3.4 gives an error about exceeding the maximum number of rows.  While digging through the file itself, so far I've come across this line that has an excess number of commas at the end:

a number of items are still missing when I try to read them through LibreOffice and my little exporter.  Here is a list of them, maybe you can figure something out or I'm doing something wrong.

EDIT: Okay, I've been working on fixing some of the messed up characters (status resists).

While doing so I figured out why some items were missing - a few "cells" in the file (as I saw them through a text editor) mixed up single and double quotes, they it would start with a single quote and end with a double quote.  I'm still going at it to see what else I can find.

And now that I think of it, I think the resists on one of Alice's Greaves were higher than it should have been.  Specifically, Chain Greaves is listed on the JP wiki as having ○ resist against Stun, but is listed as having ◎ resists in the English table.  I just updated the item table linked in my previous post.

EDIT: Updated bestiary.  It's compressed because it's kinda huge (1.11 MB) for an imageless page :V

Are you using a more recent version of 7zip?  I used LZMA2 for the compression method which was missing or broken (should've been fixed in the 9.12 beta).  Anyway, here's a zip.

The game itself is Shift-JIS and it expects to read things accordingly. The dump converted them to UTF-8 for editing, but the game doesn't care much for it when it's fed back special characters.
If I were to use the item.csv file you worked on, all the status resists would appear in game as they did in file before you changed them. Those odd symbols become the correct resist symbols in game.

If I were to make a Game.pak from the untranslated files, it would no longer be japanese, or anything sensible. It would also crash all the time.Translated files that accidentally still had stray 。！？ in them were the reason for many unavoidable cutscene crashes. The game accepts UTF-8 fine for anything that doesn't have special characters, so only item and let caused these headaches.

Ah, okay.  So the item table you uploaded for me was actually Shift-JIS?  I was trusting Notepad++'s setting when it said it was ASNI/ASCII (which does have a Shift-JIS encoding in the menu), but when I tested it on a file I knew was in that encoding it said the same damned thing :derp:

The lines prefixed with a minus sign are the old ones, the ones with + are what I changed them to.  You may have already fixed these, I dunno :V

Oh, and that Tanuki you mentioned...it doesn't appear to be used.  It has no ID for the Youkai Compendium, and none of the encounters in region.csv mention it :]

Unavoidable crash after you rerecruit Mokou in the expansion! After the screen goes black, it crashes instead of going to the world map. Double-checked to make sure it wasn't just some random thing that doesn't always happen.'

The game also crashed after Alice's scene in the ending of the game, but the game continues as if you beat the final boss after you start it again. Unfortunately you miss the entire rest of the ending :c

I don't know if I'm playing the expansion or not (it says ver 2.06 here, so I suppose I am), but I just recruited Mokou without any problem at all.

In the "things still in Japanese" department, looks like in some dungeon lines ("this door won't open, I need a _______"), the _______ is in Japanese, and whatever Akyu says whenever you try going through the door in her does is in moonrunes as well.

I'm not sure if it's related to the crashes, but I noticed that some of the of the string-related code (specifically several uses of the function that would take Shift-JIS and convert it to UTF-16 (MultiByteToWideChar) expects some strings to be null terminated.  I'm not sure if they would be preserved when dumping or packing (you'd have to ask Mauve about that one).  At least a few uses of the inverse of that function (WideCharToMultiByte) excepts the same.  They could also be used for non-table related things, but I haven't gotten around to poking at it with a debugger to confirm if the warning that you wrote too much happens on or shortly after one of those functions.

Also, a translated catl.csv would be nice because I think edu.csv uses it to determine an enemy's status resistance (per category, and per ailment).  I believe m1-m20 specifies the resistance level (or none if omitted), and catl1-20 specifies a resistance or resistance category (instant death, or quick type).

Well, it's still something of a guess since I don't know exactly where the game loads the lines from (assembly isn't something I'm terribly familiar with).  I have noticed that for whatever reason there are usually multiple copies of Akyu's, "My apologies, but I do not have anything you may find helpful" in the game's memory before where the text table is.

 I don't see any null terminators in the dump, but I don't know if the dumping tool would strip them or what the packer would do if we tried it on a file where we added them.  As an experiment I'd try inserting them at the end of the msg strings, and possibly do another one where they are inserted at the end of a line.  Normal CSV files aren't supposed to have them, but the game seems to do a few odd things (like how the resist symbols seem to be handled) with them anyway.

Mauve should be able to tell you whether or not he's doing anything with regards to the terminators.  If he's basically just extracting the files from Game.pak and not doing anything with the contents of the file then it should be a non-issue.  That's part of the reason why I was wondering a page or two back whether you could dump the Japanese files and re-pack them and have a functioning game.  If it still crashed then that implies that there is a problem with the tools and not necessarily the translated files.  Of course, Windows does use null-terminated strings for things like retrieving the file/directory names and the like and that's what some of these are used for.

Another thing you could test is to try making a copy of the translated SCN2201.csv and truncating the msg strings...it looks like the max in the Japanese version is 38 characters, so cut off the text so each line is 38 letters/symbols long.  This is just a test to see if it still crashes when you talk to Akyu.

EDIT: Before I forget, did the "Legendary Box" get changed to "Legendary Donation Box"? It was the former in the dump I have and might have gotten fixed in the interim.

EDIT2: In the catl.csv you uploaded, the following effects are/were missing the closing quotes:

It's probably been noted already, but the losing dialog after losing to both Reisen and Tewi still has some weird stuff (like an abandoned ヲ on Tewi's and the same sentence the same sentence two times on Reisen's). Also, Eientei's banner thingy on the overworld when you're about to start stage 9 is still in Japanese.

My game is crashing during the dialog after I fight Remilia towards the beginning of the game.  I was wondering if there is a known fix for this or not.

The cutscene shouldn't crash every time. Considering people have gotten past that fight, it's not a guaranteed crash; so there isn't anything I can do about it.

I just seem to have one problem. Every time I try to cast a spell the games crashes to the desktop. I tried fiddling with the graphics settings, but no dice. I think it might be trying to load Japanese and English text as mentioned earlier, for there is no problem when I cast spells with the unpatched Japanese version.
Anyone have a fix for this? Several people are playing with the patch, so I know I'm probably setting the game up wrong.

I see, thank you. How exactly do I apply the patches? I can get executables from gensoukyou.org, but I can't understand what they say and I'm not sure where to put them.

Put them in the same folder as the game. Run the patch, then when a file-select menu pops up, select the folder you have the game in and hit enter. Then wait; it may be a bit before the progress meter does anything.

I got the patches up to 1.07, but where can I find the other patches? The site doesn't seem to mention them.
