Voile Invaders
« on: September 09, 2009, 05:51:30 PM »
While I am still working on Winterheart, here is little something
I was working as a school project: Voile Invaders.

Basically this is just a mix between Touhou and Space Invaders...
And this one is short 3-levels demo... I have already finished all the
rest of level but the code still needs some more tweaking.

The fullversion should be ready next week.

And now good Cirnos day.

Well, since you say in the end of the demo that the full version includes more things, I'm not sure as to what expect, but I'll tell you my impressions.
The game runs well, I had no problems with control, and it's nice to have a few color schemes to choose. I thought that the levels are too short and there isn't much variation in them. Also, I'm not sure if I enjoyed the character's penetrating bullet.

Now, my suggestions:
I think that you should come up with more sounds and effects for the enemies, the main character and the book shelves when they are hit.
I suggest that you make enemy waves a little more like they are in Space Invaders too, making them approach the bottom of the screen, you know?
Maybe you can come up with power-ups too. Instead of having the main character that powerful, she could get resources and shot types on the go.

*Of Space Invaders I have only played the Extreme one.

Yeah, the first three levels are quit sort...
And you are right with the sounds (Heh, I actually forgot them...)
Originally I though about making the Kendamas moving downwards a little for
every turn but I decided not to include it in the ddemo.
Power-ups are always a good idea.

Thanks for your comment..

You're welcome.

Have you tried Space Invaders Extreme? I suggest that you even emulate it just to find some inspiration (mostly regarding power ups, but maybe you'll find other things interesting too).

Yeah, I have played the game... You can say that I was inspired by it.
Now current list of features implemented in the game (this game should
be ready this week):

*White kendamas move downwards until they reach bookshelves...
-> If they reach books - destroy all bookshelves that are still intact,
take some points as penalty and kill player.
*If player dies - warp Koa to the starting point (now unders 2nd bookshelf)
  and make her temporary invulnerable...
*EXTRA-mode is now available, normal way for unlocking
*Game can be now paused by pressing ESC...
-> Options: return to main, restart game from first level, continue playing
*As there were complains about the difficulty-levels being offbalance,
Easy and Normal are now bit harder and Hard and Lunatic bit easier.
* No more penetrating bullets... Also each kendama gives 100 point and
not the 4*hitcounter as in demo...
*Changed the hitpoints (from 10-40 to 5-20)...
*Fixed the level bonuses. Demo had a little bug that gave 3000*looping points as bonus
eventhough the level bonus would be only 3000
*Fixed the PAR-times to match the current settings
(played each level trough without bombing or dying)...
*Game now has boss levels with their own special set-up.

Also there are other features included with bug fixes...

Very quick message because I'm lacking time for actual to sit and spend lots of time playing:

When playing stage 3, the last enemy alive was a wandering red one, and it simply wouldn't die. I don't remember much details, but I didn't have any bombs left at the time. One was spent in that stage. I also had collected a few power items.

Okay, I take a look at it...
And don't worry about lacking time, I totally
understand it.

Ok, so I spent some time playing today.
Things I noticed:
- The credits are looping indefinitely. ^^' Like, after I press any key when asked, it returns to the credits.
- The bug I told you earlier might happen with any last surviving enemy in the stage. It happened for me in stage 4 on Easy mode and the first stage of Normal mode today. I think this might be a serious one.
- I couldn't make it a second time, but the "mukyu!" bullets froze in place in one of the times I got hit.

So, I'm looking forward to the other features you said you'll include, like the boss parts and the random effects.
Oh! And I think it would be interesting to use a "hit" sound effect for when enemies are hit, but something not too distracting or loud... Something like the sound we hear when the enemies are being hit in the official Touhou shmups.

Frozing Mukyu bullets is fixed... I just needed set
the Patchouli flag false if player dies.

Also the looping problem has been removed (it was caused
by another bug found in moving to next level... If player
life was 0 then game started staff-roll sequence but as
player wasn't officially dead yet - staff-roll started looping)

I tried to regenerate the bug with the last surviving Kendama
being invicible but somehow I didn't encounter it...
Propably I already fixed it in some previous bugfixes as the
problem most likely lies in hitpoint handling.

I send the current EXE (1.01b) to you this evening.
The final version with bossfights and other stuff, should be ready before
the end of this week (hopefully thursday but sunday is more realistic)...

The version you sent me already feels more polished than the previous one. So, how's the progress going?
(Hey! I don't mean to make you haste; in case it looks that way.)

I'll send you the link to the version 1.01c later today... It fixes one annoying bug
that only appears in the normal mode...

Ok, so I played it again today.
I saw the invincible enemy bug again today in the 5th stage i Hard mode. I had bombed in that stage, and this time it wasn't the last enemy alive, as it was invincible before I killed another one.
Something strange happened in Lunatic too. I had no lives or bombs left, and when I finished the 6th stage (I think), it asked me if I would keep playing, and then it told that I got the 2nd highest score and closed.
And just one little thing: it's still displaying 1.01b, not that it's important as you'll release other versions.

Well... I already made an installer for the version I hope to be final (1.02e),
but it all depends how the testing goes.

Here is the installer for the full-version of Voile Invaders. Took longer as excepted but I hope the result is worth of the wait.

Glitches I experienced:

Sometimes the boss' HP suddenly drops and I win really fast. Noticed this happens when the bosses switch attacks while being hit.
I didn't get the press enter to proceed screen between stages on my first playthrough.
On one lunatic playthrough my bombs refilled to 3 every stage making clearing normal stages really easy.
Sometimes I randomly die, but it only happens when I idle in a stage for items and there's still an enemy shooting bullets.
On one playthrough one bookshelf was permanently destroyed.
One time all the bookshelves suddenly disappeared during a boss fight. Not by bullets.
Had to reload game for extra to appear.

Notable problems:
I can idle in a stage forever for items that randomly fall. Might be a good idea to make enemies drop them instead or make them stop falling after par timer runs out or something.
It sucks having very little power during a boss fight since it'll take really really long to beat them so it might be a good idea to randomly make power items drop.

Other than that it's playable.
