Extra Spirit-Dropping Fairies

Hi there. I noticed that in certain parts of the game, there will sometimes be extra fairies that drop life or bomb spirits. For example, at the end of stage 2: Once I played through and had 4 bomb fairies at the end. Another time, there were 6 bomb fairies and one fairy which dropped two live parts. There are also other places in which this happens (and places where you may encounter less fairies if in trance). Can anyone explain what causes the extra/missing fairies?

Kill fairies quickly to get extra fairies, take too long they won't appear.

o.O Was that it? I was expecting something more complicated, but this works too.

So far I've only found the end stage 2 and 4 fairies to be affected by this

Preferably do it in trance mode too. It's easier and you 2x the pieces.
The characters are quite strong in trance mode so you shouldn't have trouble killing all the fairies quickly.

That or use Youmu's charge shot while stationed in the middle.

Youmu is truly divine at these with her charge shot. It's usually better than going into trance mode; however, you should probobly go into a trance quickly anyway to double the worth of the spirits. So, yeah, these points are basically places where you're meant to use trance.
