Nue Quest: A Z-Machine Adventure
« on: May 18, 2011, 01:37:59 AM »

>You are Nue Houjuu,  Gensokyo's premier shapeshifter!
>Yours is a long and storied past, ranging from hassling the Mikado's palace in the old days to being sealed underground to making your way among migrant oni and more. But by and large, you've gotten by. These days, you live in the Ancient City, and run a successful tavern, as well as a couple of side businesses. As well, you have taken to hanging with a group of surprisingly open-minded Buddhists.
>You are an independent-minded person and prone to mischief. You are a confident and flirtatious, seldom at a loss of words or caught off guard. In the old days you had no problem terrorizing those in the highest seats of power, but these days you have calmed down somewhat. Even if you no longer aspire to your old heights of harassing Emperors, you still love to stir up trouble every now and again. Despite this, you find yourself surprisingly responsible these days, between running legitimate businesses and helping out your surface world friends. Some days, you wonder if you're losing your edge. Partially you blame Byakuren's influence; she has a way of making want to behave, at least a little bit. As well, having lived among the rigorously honest oni; quick to answer injury with violence; has done much to quietly shape you toward being a more socially-minded soul. Particularly after the end result of your first attempts to run scams and thieve your way through as you used to...
>These days you consider the oni as good friends, even if they're a bit more gruff than you'd like sometimes. Your tavern serves as a well-known peaceful spot, where people in the Ancient City can go to relax and not worry about the brawls and such, though sometimes they do happen right outside your doorstep. You are acquainted with one of the Four Devas that lead the oni, a woman calling herself K. She sometimes uses your tavern as a base of operations, though this has been happening less often lately. You have also found yourself tied to the people of the Myouren Temple, after they forgave you for your last big prank of interfering with their restoration of their leader. They've proven to be true friends, and have done what they can to assist you when you need it.
>It is morning now, you have just awoken and gotten cleaned up. You stand in the middle of your room, situated on the second floor of your tavern. To the west of you rests a sizable, exceptionally fluffy futon that is easily large enough to accommodate three people; more than enough room for you to roll around as while sleeping and still have room for a friend. The northern wall is covered with numerous chests of drawers, stuffed with a variety of clothing to fit just about any bipedal body type you wish to take. The southern wall is home to your workdesk and your tools, as well as a full-length three part mirror that you use for perfecting new shapes or just admiring the epitome of heredity that is Nue. The last wall is home to several shelves, where you keep your personal effects, dishes, maps you've made of the tunnels, and the like. The floor is covered with a number of carpets but is otherwise empty, giving you room when you want to try a less compact form. The empty spots on the walls are covered with bright wall scrolls, while here and there is a potted plant, small frondy things that thrive underground and add natural touches to the place. A stairway in the corner leads down to the back parts of your tavern. Obvious exits are: Down.
>Speaking of the Tavern, you'll may want to open it up soon. Or perhaps not? You've never kept a real schedule before, not as though anyone in the Ancient City does.

>Inventory
>What are the practical limitations of our shapeshifting ability?

>Your inventory contains
>Black dress
>A short number that draws attention low, and has a lovely bit of frills around the neck. It's made to accommodate your wings, and is is quite stretchy, very useful when you need to change shapes on the fly.
>Black Stockings
>They keep your legs warm and clean. They can stretch to accommodate some shape changes.
>You have several limitations. Firstly, you need to keep your internal organs intact. This means that radical shifts need a lot of practice; you can alter your internal organs, but it takes time and practice. Time and practice are other practical limits. You can easily make yourself look like an average human, for instance, but looking like a specific human takes practice and studying that person closely. Voices, you need to listen to and spend time manipulating your voice box to get right. This tends to be hours worth of work. As well, it takes more power to move further from your natural shape, leaving less for danmaku and such. You're most dangerous when you're in natural form. You can make yourself about a short as a child or large faerie, and about as tall as Byakuren if you sacrifice your wings; you can be smaller if you move extra mass into more appendanges and such. It's not an exact thing, magic's like that. When you need something extraordinary in a hurry, you use a seed of non-identification.
>Thankfully, though, you can pull off the basic shape of about any race in Gensokyo easily, and just about any normal body type. And you have a few specific shapes of wilder things that you keep in practice.

>Skills.

>Your skills are
>Shapechanging!
>You can change shapes naturally, within reason.
>Danmakustyles
>You are among the best in danmaku, with some particularly vile spellcards you're proud of. Leaving your natural shape cuts your power significantly
>Cocktailcrafting
>You can mix a drink like nobody's business
>Cartographing
>You have an interest in mapping the Underground, and hawking those maps.
>Seam Stressing
>Your unique talents force you to make a lot of your own clothes. You're pretty good at it!
>Jeweling
>Every master thief is a master jeweler, and vice versa. You can make some very nice jewelry with time, assess gems, and cut your own with time and the right tools.
>Seedy Matters
>You have the skills to cultivate and use seeds of non-identification
>The Darkness
>You can conjure a cloud of darkness, this drains your power rather strongly.
>Tridenteering
>You're a dab hand with a trident! In particular, you can fish pretty well with one. But in terms of self defense, you're not slouch.
>Pickpocketing
>You had to start somewhere...You're rusty, but still got it, you think.
>Lock Removal
>You used to be a dab hand at picking locks, but it's been ages...
>Second Story Work
>You used to be quite the cat burglar, but it's been awhile. You think you still have it.

>_
>Who else has graced the presence of our futon?
>Do we even have a true form?
>How effective are we at impersonating people, visually?

>More than you care to count. You've had a number of brief relationships among oni and the occasional kidnapped human. Nothing serious, but quite a lot of fun.
>You do, a somewhat smallish and thin youkai with interesting wings and excellent legs (if you do say so yourself).
>See above. It depends.

>Quests

>Another Day, Another Drink
>You should open the pub sooner or later. Maybe.

> Relationships
> Do we have any regular customers?
> How often do we shapeshift nowadays?

>You are acquainted with Deva K, and could probably impose on her for a moderate favor. You are good friends with Byakuren and her friends, and could practically have them eating out of your hand if you liked.
>You have some regulars, and a number of transients.
>Not very often, actually. You rather like your proper shape, and find the less you change shapes, the less you get blamed for. And, the less you do it, the less people expect it when you do.

> How often have we opened the tavern in the last, oh, month? Maybe it's time for a break.

>Regularly. A break may not be unwarranted at all!

>What shapes would these be?

>You keep the classic monkey/lion/snake chimera shape onhand, just because you feel it is a kind of calling card of yours, though in the power it drains is quite high.
>You recently got very familiar with the shape of Hatate Himekaidou for a task, though you never got her oice quite right.
>You have the shapes of a couple oni memorized, simply in case you need to disappear or redirect someone.
>You have the shapes of couple specific rabbits from Eientei memorized from the exposition their held two winters ago, that you've recently reacquainted yourself with for fun.
>Finally, you can impersonate Sanae Kochiya's shape quite well, though not perfectly yet. You did this mostly on her insistence after your UFO incident.

> Rummage around in our room. Anything interesting or useful?

>You have all kinds of useful things! Your box of spellcards, your jeweler's tools, a couple seeds of non-identification, your maps of the underground, several books, all sorts of clothes and accessories (who besides mansion owners have a more extensive wardrobe?) mundane tools like tableware, some novels, and so on.

>She was curious.
>It's fairly close, you think. You could probably fool even close friends if they couldn't see well (such as low light for humans). In good lighting, you wouldn't try it. People who've not seen her closely might fall for it if you were dressed properly.
>That was a special of yours, done via a seed of non-identification. You weren't really non-corporeal, you just dodged and made your victims think you were. Unfortunately the seed gave up the ghost the last time you took it off. Ah well, you can do it again.

>Is it normal for them to 'wear out' like that? If so, about how much usage can you expect to get out of one?
>How many do we have in our possession, and is it possible to replace them somehow?

>You can make anything look like anything, pretty much. But the further you deviate from the original shape, the more likely it is to be seen through. Smaller objects tend to give you a lot more leeway; making a tree look like a mountain is possible, but not very practical.
>They are, as you like to say, fiddly. The more often they're taken off, the more likely they are to wear out. And leaving one in use for a long time then taking it off makes it more likely to break than just removing it once after a short time. You really can't predict it beyond that.
>You have two of them in your chambers. You did have three, but Iku Nagae convinced you to use up one on a pet project of hers. You can replace them, but it takes time and effort; you have a Tree of Non-Identification (a bonsai, really) that can create new ones, but you have to invest it with your own power. You have one about ready to drop, but it would probably leave you stuck in your natural form and with weakened danmaku for the day if you were to finish it off right now.

>Do we actually happen to have suitable clothing in our wardrobe to pull off the Sanae look?

>Head downstairs

>You don't have one of her style out outfits, but you do have a some shrine maidenesque garb.
>You go downstairs.
>You are in the back room of your tavern. There numerous barrels of various drinks; some of your own concoction but most bought from other brewers. There is a shelf of cheap, durable tableware and pantry off to the side, for the infrequent times when you offer meals. There is a lovely stove and oven down here, and several windows to open with it gets too hot. A large sink, and a small covered well beside it, rest in a corner. In the corner is your cash box. You typically don't worry about it; you live in a city full of oni and play Deva K good protection money to make sure that none of them get in a conquesting state of mind (theft is right out, but spoils of victory are something else). All of the stock keeps things fairly cramped in here. You can see the open way to the front room to your right. Obvious exists are South, East, and Up.

>If there's no rush to get things open for business, let's go for a little walk. Head outside.

>You decide to go for a a walk.
>You head into the front room, pleased to see it's still properly clean and no one has invited themselves inside to sleep off a hang-over; you really have to hand it to Byakuren for starting up the Clinic-cum-drunk tank for bringing those kinds of instances down. While the oni that do so don't mean anything by it, it's still irritating. You make sure all the chairs are properly in place on your way out as your pass your big communal tables on the way out.
>Stepping outside, you see the streets are not crowded; only couple small groups and some street hawkers trying to move their brews. The omnipresent music is at a low, barely a background noise. This is the close as the city gets to sleeping, it's probably mid-afternoon. All around you are other pubs, most of them closed at the moment. You and your neighbors are kind of competing and kind of colluding; most oni pick their watering hole for atmosphere, because it's open when they're awake, or because it's habit. You and your neighbors sometimes work together; letting each other know when you're going to be closed for a length of time and covering the off hours. Other times, you try to lure away customers. It's all good fun, really. The street stretches east and west, east taking you to the edge of the cavern and west taking you toward the market.
>"Oy," says an oni learning against your storefront, wearing a filthy shawl despite the warm weather. She is rather small; a Suika-build as you think of them; with curly ram's horns and brown hair. "Oy, want to 'ear the latest?" Oh, she's a streetear. Or rather, she hears rumors and sell them. Streetears are close to the bottom of the oni food chain; largely they exist because the Devas like knowing what's going on without having to spend all their time gathering information. At least oni are too honest to make up fake information and sell it. Useless, on the other hand...

>It's hard to tell how often it's worth it. Sometimes you yourself can pass it on. Sometimes you can't.
>You have a good 1000☼ in liquid money right now that is fully yours. You have 1200☼ or so more set aside for future payments in liquor, protection, and so on that you could use, but would need to get back within a few weeks, maybe a few months if you took on interest. You have 200☼ in petty cash for the pub; you hate to dip into that, it's how you make change. If you tried to liquidate as much as you could, selling off your stock and such, you could raise 3000☼-4000☼ over a couple days, but you'd really be taking a bath on it. You expect a moneylender would give you upwards of 5000☼, if you were willing to sign a loan you probably wouldn't like the terms of.
