I've played lots of RPGs in my life, but one series in particular holds a special place in my heart: the Tales Of series. From the very beginning with Tales of Phantasia all the way to the most recent Tales of Graces, this series has not ceased to amuse me with its fun combat system, interesting stories, cool anime openings, well done (eh...most of the time) voice acting, and colorful characters interacting in fun skits. Every game still feels familiar despite it being a different continuity, and obliterating stuff with Indignation will never get old. I was just playing Tales of Symphonia a little while back with a friend of mine who wanted to finish the game before summer sessions started, and I was once again reminded of just how much fun a multiplayer console RPG can be when played with friends.

Perhaps my favorite part the series is the fact that the makers of the game seem to enjoy playfully having fun with their own creation. Cameos, bonus videos, and tons of in-jokes can be found throughout the fandom, including many official works like Tales of Gaiden and Viva Tales Of!

Here's just one hilarious example, an episode of the Viva Tales Of! series, which is a skit-based talk show hosted by Zelos Wilder and Jade Curtis:

And that's not even getting into the official crossover games, of which there are several, including the most recent Tales of VS for the PSP. And for those of us in the West who are upset over the lack of localizations, Tales of Innocence just got a full translation patch courtesy of Absolute Zero translations. I've been playing a lot of that recently, as its combat system is extremely fun. Plus, Ricardo fights with a rifle/shotgun. How can you not want to play as him?

only played Symphonia because lol PAL, beat it on Mania without carrying over anything manipulating battle difficulty, tried minimal HP/half exp Mania and got bored of it after Asgard.

Got a few hundred hours out of it, definitely worth buying the gamecube for only one game
the lack of skip scene hurts it though

would love to play Abyss, but lol PAL again

and yeah I've seen Drake on these forums before like 2 years before I found Touhou

I love the Tales of series. I haven't played any since Abyss though. I wanna play Hearts so bad. Why won't they release it over here?

English patch for Innocence is out now, at least. The game's dungeon designs are terrible, but combat is amazing. They somehow took the 3D combat (including free run) from Abyss and crammed it into the DS. It's so much more combo-oriented now than most previous Tales games, I think (at least the TP-system using ones).

I happened to like the cast too. Ange Serena is now my 3rd favorite character in the franchise, after Jade Curtiss and Zelos Wilder.

Yes. Ange is fucking delicious in character and in battle. I main her.

I guess you'd be right about it being very combo-oriented (especially with IJ), but I don't really care for the aerial aspect in this game as it isn't used much, and with constant direction changes with the 3d plane it isn't that useful anyways.

I switch between Ange and Spada as the mood takes me. Both are fun.

I've only ever played Symphonia and Abyss but both are freaking amazing. It's hard to say which one I like better. I mean, Abyss has Natalia and Symphonia has Presea. HOW CAN I CHOOSE!?

I've only played Symphonia, DotNW (haven't finished), and Phantasia. Vesperia is on my "to-play" list, but that all depends on what free time I get once summer ends. I'm looking forward to breaking the game, though.

Most of Suzu's attacks had mismatched audio, too, which was almost as hilarious as the VA in the intro.

Hey, at least PAL got the Tales of Eternia port on PSP!
Heck, I own 3 versions of it and I'd probably still buy it if it came out here. :S

I only played Symphonia and Phantasia on GBA but I lost intrest in Phantasia at Daos's castle I think.

It's my favorite game in the series. Reid is my favorite lead. And there's Max, YEAH!

Oh gosh, I loved Reid so much. Rending Tiger Blade was just insane. And then there was Max (my favorite character), who just annihilated everything with Elemental Master.

Come to think of it, most endgame random encounters just amounted to Reid holding off the enemy with Rending Tiger Blade's range and pushback while Max immediately charged up for Elemental Master to wipe out all enemies instantly. With guys like that...who were the other playable characters in the game again?

Vesperia has a PS3 port, but it is currently only in Japanese. Tales of Graces was a Wii game, but was notoriously unfinished in a manner more blatant than Vesperia, so will probably get a PS3 port at some point in the future.

Tales of Eternia got a PSP port in Europe.

I've only experienced the front end of the series, having played Phantasia, Destiny, and Symphonia.

Phantasia was one of the best SNES RPGs but holy shit did it have some aggravating parts. I still have nightmares about the lower Moria Gallery. Note that I played the translated SNES rom; I'm curious what the original script is like since apparently Dejap took some fucking huge liberties with it. Also, I would've liked to play with Suzu

I played only about half of Destiny, at one point I dropped it going "aghaghagh this dungeon is too huge I'm taking a break" and never got back on it. I'll start it again someday maybe.

Symphonia had fun battles but it also had the worst story of any RPG I've ever played. I mean, holy crap. Just fucking die, Colette.

Also, why did they have to change the original food system? You stuck it in a sack and regained HP as you walked around. Good deal. Now you have to fly around the whole goddamn world to pick up the individual ingredients for increasingly complex recipes to get any benefit. Waste of time, I'll just use gummies >:|
