Kisume Quest IV - A Z-Machine Adventure
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:46:37 AM »

>You are Kisume, Genoskyo's premier drifter, and you got husted by a mysterious man apparently posing as a farmer.
>You live underground, in a bucket, mugging people whenever you can. What meager amounts of money you make tends to go toward food and cheap liquor during your periodic forays into the Ancient City when things seem calm. Otherwise, you make your living scavenging in the caverns. It's not a glamorous existence, scraping along the bottom, but you're proud of it. You're making your own way through the world and that's something they'll never take away from you. You could have had an easy and completely boring life, once, but you decided to forge your own way and live like a proper youkai. You don't regret it. You're proud of the fact that you can live on the go, when so many other youkai have settled down. You're proud that you never stopped making a living as a bandit, even after the Hakurei Maiden established the spellcard rules. You don't have much, but you have your pride and you don't owe anyone anything. You'll never go back to Higan.
>You are able to be extremely patient, sitting in one place for hours without budging an inch. You tend not to keep more than you can carry in your bucket, though you're capable of carrying an awful lot. You have an fondness for old-timey slang, such as calling coins 'thin ones' and referring to your name as your moniker and so on. You have a distaste for settled life; though you don''t mind borrowing its creature comforts. In particular, you hate bureaucracy, paperwork, proper procedures, and the like. Thankfully that seldom comes up. You have a  distaste for open spaces, and a distinct preference for narrow or tight places. While you can be friendly, you're seldom polite.
>You had a run-in with a man dressed as a farmer who managed to deftly fling you into a wall. Upon waking you found yourself left in unfamiliar caverns and slowly worked your way back to the tunnels you know, running into a surprising number of faeries wearing canine ears and requesting that you give them riches. After some misadventures, you learned that the human went into the oni city, and seems to have disappeared.  You explored the unknown caverns, found an old side chamber with a fair amount of things to salvage and an angry evil spirit. You helped a faerie recover a pearl earring that fell in the river, and now have a favor to call in from the canine-eared faeries. Things were going rather well until you accompanied a tengu into the Ancient City and got into a fight with an oni musician. Much to everyone's surprise, yours included, you managed to win that fight. You spoke with Nue and then Yamame, before deciding to go out to the surface to see what you can find about your assailant; especially after hearing from Yamame that he has passed by.  The trail seems to have gone cold, no one knows of a farmer matching that description, though at least one other person has seen him. You've delivered a message to Eientei for a nice fee, and managed to mooch a relaxing bath and meal off of them in the process, as well as get an enchanted scarf you've found identified. You've gotten on the good side of the Harvest Goddess. You have taken a couple of jobs from Kourindou.
>Lately, you've been exploring the old graveyard behind the human town, where you've encountered a weird person you're pretty sure is some kind of animated corpse, and managed to rob her of her possessions before fleeing from the scene when she called for her master. However, something seems to have followed you out, and you've only seen it as a brownish blur springing from the grass toward you!

> Swerve to the left!
> Turn our head to track their movement if we successfully dodge.

>You move to the left as it comes toward you, then past you as you duck out of the way.  You can hear it hit the grass behind you and keep moving. Turning around, you can see the figure clearly; a man with short silvery hair, wearing the clothing of a common farmer. Currently he is sprinting eastward toward the town.

> Give chase with haste!

>It's him! It's definitely him!
>You start to chase him, but your moments of dismay have allowed him a rather sizable head start. Still, you pursue him, flying as fast as you can.  You close a significant amount of this distance at first, but you yourself are more of a sprinter than a distance runner when it comes to flight.
>As for him, he is definitely very skilled at what he is doing. The tall grass doesn't seem to bother him, nor do his motions seem to be panicked or irregular. Rather they are smooth and measured, you don't seem him being very likely to trip or stumble. He is moving quickly, very quickly, but you don't get any feeling of desperation from it like you would normally expect a human being chased by a youkai to exhibit.
>After your initial burst of speed, you are still slowly closing in on him, but it's not easy to keep up this pace. The graveyard fence has passed you both by, and you can see the temple and some of the outer buildings of the village up ahead.

> Are we within shouting ddistance of the village?
> Is anyone visible?

It is worth considering the fact that we are a youkai chasing a human into, and seemingly through, the human village. Social climates may have improved over the years, but it's still very easy for the residents of the village to draw unpleasant conclusions about the situation and our motives. We will need to choose our words and actions carefully.

The main thing we have in our favor is accusations of thievery, which can be pseudo-corroborated by Tenshi given we told her about the guy already. This may be enough to give villagers pause or even help out.

>The man in farmer's clothes continues to run, making his way toward the main north/south road. You've fallen a little bit behind, but you think you can make it up for now. However, you cannot deny this man must be in very good shape to run like this.

That seems to be a gameplay mechanic this time around. Kisume's shit for physical, and since the very beginning, it has seemed flight is just another physical motion, like running or jumping.

I recall when fully-powered Utsuho struggled to fly while carrying the weight of just one other person, which suggested there was more to it than simply willing yourself to move in three dimensions.

Going to bed. If we get anywhere close to the tavern, bellow for Tenshi's help. (And try to make it succinct as possible. "Tenshi, help!" should be fine.)
